Description

So last month RPG Maker MZ, the latest in the RPG Maker series, was released! With a bunch of quality of life upgrades, better ability to run on potatoes and a whole new way of dealing with animations (and plugins, too) - well it's a pretty decent upgrade!

So, we're gonna celebrate the next footstep in the beloved series by having a small event to check it out. The idea behind this event is to play with the engine and see what it can do in comparison to other RM engines, at the base level. Basically, you can do testing, figure out eventing and just mess around with what's there. Get a feel for the engine and how it is to make stuff in, how it stacks up against other RM engines or how RM engines feel to gammak in.

Thankfully, this time they released it with a trial version! Extra fun for those who don't have the cashola to buy. ;p

Rules
- Make a small game (at least 5 minutes gameplay) over the course of a week.
- Can only use RPG Maker MZ (bought or trial is fine)
- NO PLUGINS! We're going old-school! (holy shit)
- RTP only! (I know. I'm sorry ;.; )
- Gammak start Midnight of Friday 18th/Saturday 19th.
- Gammak end Midnight of Sunday 27th/Monday 28th.

Make sure to check your hourly offset in Settings so that the timer on the side of this page shows the start and end times in your timezone!

This is a challenge and get-to-know-you event! Oh... AND A COMPETITION!
What does that mean? It means you are challenged to make something short and sweet using ONLY the base components of the engine. Eventing and RTP. No plugins, no custom art (bar UIs for evented menus, for example), no parallaxing. Use the engine as it stands, without additions, to create a game.

Thus the reason why it's a shorter event. So people can just dive in, mess about a bit and get to know/understand the engine whilst making something simple (if they're new to RPG Maker) or challenge themselves with the restrictions of events/RTP only (for those who are used to the engine).

COMPETITION
Thanks to Ocean and his generosity this is now a Competition. The prize? A full version of RPG MAKER MZ! I (liberty) will be the judge, you will be the jury and there's no need for an executioner!

After the event ends, there will be a week to play the games and you can vote on which game you thought was the best of the bunch. I will then judge from the top 3 games that you, the jury, have picked and choose the overall winner!

FAQs

Can we use custom art such as pictures?
Only if they're RTP edits (for example, editing the window skin for UI purposes or facesets for portraits, etc)

What about DLCs that were released with the engine? The 60+ plugins and extra DLC files?
Nope! Only what is in the engine when you crack it open on a new project (bar, again, UI pictures).

Generator faces/sprites okay?
Yes.

RTP edits?
Self-edits are allowed but they must be based on the RTP and not be custom stuff.

What about scriptlets?
You can use scriptlets to call stuff - like a shortcut to commands, but not to add/remove stuff.

Where can I get the engine and how much does it cost?
You can buy the engine either on Steam or on RPGMakerWeb, however, there is also a free trial that lets you use the engine unrestricted for 20 days. If you don't know whether you want to buy it yet, get the trial instead.

Uploaded the project! It's not exactly the prettiest thing in the world but I hope you enjoy it regardless.
THERE WAS A MASSIVE GAME BREAKING BUG in the game so I had to take down the original build. Sorry!

(If you escaped the ice tower, the timer would run out and you'd no longer be able to beat the game with the best ending)
The gamepage is up!
MZN' BCN

Info:
-Not what you might expect-

Life was uneventful, and rightfully so, for a charming, precious pig on the farm… until that particular morning.
A most unwelcome situation needed to be rectified, and our little pink hero faced the risks alone.

MZN’ BCN is a short, boss-only RPG with a silly comedy gimmick that might get old fast.

Not unlike social experiments, it isn’t impossible that you learn something about yourself in the end or have your own interpretation of the game’s content.
For best results, you might want to beat the game twice in a single sitting.

This game was made for the Trials of RPG Maker MZ event.

Features
-Short and simple, beatable under 15~20 minutes.
-Puzzle-like battles. Once you find out what to use against the bosses, you shouldn’t have much trouble.
-Save anywhere outside battle. Reload if you make a bad purchase or if you forget to equip the right stuff.
-Recommended for Let’s Players who like to read the text aloud... Or maybe not.
The gamepage for my sidescrolling SHMUP Platformer is up: Luke Daimont: Absolute Mayhem

Still some ways to go before upload though.
OMG congrats guys! Seeing that you have already finished makes me soooo nervous... I hope I am going to finish in time ToT

And I wanted to ask if I can use this picture as titlescreen. It's made with just RTP battlebacks and the DarkClouds parallax. But I wanted to be sure asking you.

Friendly reminder: This event uses the event locker! While it's not required to have a gamepage, making one will not allow you to set any download associated with said gamepage to the event! You still have to upload your game into the event, itself!

However, if you do put together a gamepage, let me know, as I've a playlist for this event.

Created a gamepage for my game because why not. Hopefully it'll be accepted!
Uploaded, it's much shorter than I wanted, reaaaally haven't had time since I just started college. But managed to clear enough stuff to work on it a bit for a couple days. >.> Might finish it in future though. *with plugins because holy crap, without some quality of life stuff, making more complex things suuucks.*

I can't agree more... plugins are really our saviors.
I am still not finished. I have decided to cut out some scenes and other extra stuffs to win a bit of time, but I still am not sure if I will finish in time... Let's hope for the best.

Caught an issue where actor 2's skill costs were pulling from actor 1's pool...not ideal.
One of the 2 last fights are now implemented...or is it three? Idk. I'll just keep going until I feel this scene is done then test like mad.

Looking at about 20-30 minutes to finish rather than the required five, but I suspect its the same for most people.

About 8 hours remain until event closure! To those who are still aiming to release something: just do your best to remain calm! Remember that you can refine your project including the ability to use plug-ins, and stuff after the event concludes!

For what it's worth, I would still include your game in my playlist if the intent was to release during this event, even if you didn't quite make it!

AHHHHHH!!! Respect to those who manage to stay calm!!! That's easier said than done! I am so nervous I am not gonna finish in timeeee! >o<

That's very nice of you!!!
Because I am about to sleep I will add the usual 1 hour upload grace to the time now. There will be no extra time after the end of the hour grace, so plan accordingly!

Keep in mind that you MUST UPLOAD YOUR GAME TO THIS PAGE via the Submit button in the top-right!

Okay, well, it was actually more around 12 hours remaining from my last post. My mistake. I can do maths, yarn it!

*shakes fist at sky*

Still, I'm sure the extra hour that Liberty has granted is appreciated.

I've also taken a mental note that Soulrain and Puddor's gamepages for their respective entries are currently on the queue, and will add them to the playlist when I notice they're through.
Game almost completed. Hopefully I'll manage to make the deadline.
Well this has been a very fun experience for me. It is actually the first game I ever sort of finished. In the past I installed the RPGMaker and then installed every plugin I could find. Because how else could you be a good RPG Maker game right? And then I was just became overwhelmed with everything and never ever got very far with my projects.

But now, with the restrictions of this challenge, I was freed from this burden and could just try out what the RPG Maker had to offer. And I think it is pretty nice. I focused on the combat in this project, to find out in which ways you could make the standard combat system fun. And I think I did a pretty good job. At least I had a fun time experimenting with the different options available.

Even so I put myself up to too much work and have one area of the game pretty underdeveloped with a kinda boring boss fight. But it is optional, so yeah.

My mapping is obvious pretty bad, but oh well. I had much fun with this event so thanks Liberty for starting it!
