Description

This has been a big year for the RPG Maker series, with the release of RPG Maker 2000 and RPG Maker 2003, as well as the news of RPG Maker MV coming in the future! As such, we've held a fair amount of RM-only events. But what about the other engines out there? There's a lot of them and with the recent Humble Bundle packs and new releases, they haven't seen much time in the spotlight in the site.

Thus, this time we're going to even the score - No RPG Maker event is a go!

Make a game during the month of October in an engine that is not part of the RPG Maker series.

- Make and release a project with-in the month of October, 2015.
- Only non-RM engines are allowed.
- No teams. (Though you can get people to help you, there's only a single prize and divvying it up would be quite difficult.)
- Only one per person.
- RM-clone engines are not allowed. It's a challenge people! Embrace it!
- You may release a demo or full game, but you an only win first prize with a full game. (Other prizes can be won with demos, though.)
- Games must have at least 10-20 minutes of game time.
- You cannot use an old game as a base, though you can certainly remake a game in a different engine. And pre-made resources are fine.
- Rips, edits, RTP and custom are all good.

All games must be submitted to the event page by the 31st of October, 11:59 GMT.

You may start brainstorming but nothing else until the 1st of October.

There will be NO extensions so plan your time wisely and make prayers to the Gods of Fate.

The First Place prize will be a 3D printed coin with the RMN logo on one side and your username on the other. The winner will also receive a badge and 80MS. Only a full game can win this prize.

2nd Place will receive a badge and 60MS.

3rd Place will receive a badge and 40MS.

All others will receive a badge and 25MS.

Placings will be picked by vote, but only votes by those who have been on the site before the competition started will count, so calling on tumblr or reddit to swing you to win won't work.

For those who don't recall (or know) we do have an engines page in case you've no idea where to start. You can also start checking out the different engines right away. Dive on in!

To sumbit:
Create a game page for your game, abiding by the rules of the site. It is highly recommended that you do this at least a few days before the end of the event!

Upload your game to the gamepage and then click the Submit button at the top of this page. From there you can choose the download you mean to submit.

This must all be done before the end date of the competition.

FAQ

Is RPG Toolkit taken as a clone engine?
I'm gonna go with yes and say 'Go challenge yourself, mate'. There's a lot of engines out there. We have a huge list of them on the engines page and a bunch of them are free.

Does it have to cooperate with Windows 7?
Make it compatible with at least Windows XP and 7. If people can't play your game they can't vote for it after all. Also, yes, PC Master race.

Will there be any theme or more guidelines given?
There might be additions to the guidelines depending on questions asked, though that will be more clarification. No theme.

So I can start working on ma gam right now?
Is it October yet? The start and end dates are shown in the top-right corner of the page, under the submit and management buttons. You can mess around to get used to an engine, but no actually making a start on your game. Brainstorming is fine, though. No concrete work!

No, RPG Maker RTP won't appear, but rips very so. It's not like I plan to sell it, just something to have fun, that's all. ;)

I think I've got an idea for something small and fun, maybe along the lines of Mirror Boy. I'll have to see if I can squeeze it in between art practice, Bossgame work, and finishing prep for Youmacon >__>

I wanna do something like Story-driven Shmup/ with RPG elements and three different endings.
I hesitate between Construct Classic and GDevelop. Construct has benefits of being old and therefore fully functional on my system. On the other hand its forums are messy and full of plugins. If I choose CC, searching through forums will cost me time.

Lol everyone is flocking to Renpy. I would too but visual novels aren't my thing anyway.

Warning: RTP EULA violation ;)
I downloaded Renpy. I am going to try my luck with that, and see what happens.

And here I was worried everyone would be using Super Mario Bros. X because so many people already knew how to use that. Though I don't know how easy it is to jump into that engine without prior knowledge. Renpy is actually easier than Ace is some ways.

Edit:

I was thinking if this event is really successful we could do an engine vs. event sometime in the future (not like right away, like 10 months and 4 days from now.)

People could sign up for the engine they want to use and be put on teams based on their engine choice. So you could have Team Renpy Vs. Team Unity Vs. Team Ace, etc...

Though with prior failure in other team events I'm not sure how many people would be interested in that.

I'm going to participate in this. This looks really interesting!

I might just release a demo of a game made in Game Maker since I'm still busy with my RPG Maker game still.

I need to figure out what I might do for my game... :/

Also, just a reminder, but if you want to nab an engine, there's some that are being given away in this thread: http://rpgmaker.net/forums/topics/18395/?p=1#posts

Just PM the person with the engine you want and reply in that thread when you get it!

I am ready!

Dogs are a very good idea. I think my game will have... a spider. Maybe exactly one spider.
I'm doing a small action-platform game demo.

It will have the style of Mega Man... kinda. :/ Though I'm not basing it off of Mega Man.
I'm going to make my game in machine code... Yay!

SMBX is pretty easy to get into if you are just making basic Mario levels, but for making games with custom NPC behaviors and/or different graphics it requires some intermediate skill.

Besides, I personally want to use something that is way more flexible, especially since I have a clearer picture of what kind of game I want to make now.

SMBX is easy, but there are things that, if you don't know going in, you're going to have a stroke trying to figure it out. But yeah, my first thought was SMBX, but then I thought, what was I going to make? A Mario game just like every other Mario game? It'd be my first one. What else would it be?
Everything is good except you cannot use RTP because it violates the license. You can only use RTP in RPG Maker projects.

Might want to update the event info with that.

What would be the difference of doing that and using RPG Maker 2003? Because until recently you couldn't buy that? I mean if your going to allow rips there is no real difference. (With the exception that you may or may not have paid money for those RPG Maker Products.)

Not that I would want to use the RTP in a visual novel (gags with disgust.)

I thought you were wrong, but I googled it, and this was the closest thing I could find regarding the subject, on this page.

So I'll make a shmup featuring Arnold (the Dude) and his epic battle to save the world from the evil Steve (the not-Dude) and his endless horde of candy-powered man-babies (otherwise known as the John's).

Anything goes, right?

Edit: Actually, I think I'll be swapping Arnold (the Dude) for a little girl; simply because a little girl is much easier to sprite~
Edit2: Waaait... What about a little girl named Arnold (the Dude(ette))? Genius! XD
