Description

This has been a big year for the RPG Maker series, with the release of RPG Maker 2000 and RPG Maker 2003, as well as the news of RPG Maker MV coming in the future! As such, we've held a fair amount of RM-only events. But what about the other engines out there? There's a lot of them and with the recent Humble Bundle packs and new releases, they haven't seen much time in the spotlight in the site.

Thus, this time we're going to even the score - No RPG Maker event is a go!

Make a game during the month of October in an engine that is not part of the RPG Maker series.

- Make and release a project with-in the month of October, 2015.
- Only non-RM engines are allowed.
- No teams. (Though you can get people to help you, there's only a single prize and divvying it up would be quite difficult.)
- Only one per person.
- RM-clone engines are not allowed. It's a challenge people! Embrace it!
- You may release a demo or full game, but you an only win first prize with a full game. (Other prizes can be won with demos, though.)
- Games must have at least 10-20 minutes of game time.
- You cannot use an old game as a base, though you can certainly remake a game in a different engine. And pre-made resources are fine.
- Rips, edits, RTP and custom are all good.

All games must be submitted to the event page by the 31st of October, 11:59 GMT.

You may start brainstorming but nothing else until the 1st of October.

There will be NO extensions so plan your time wisely and make prayers to the Gods of Fate.

The First Place prize will be a 3D printed coin with the RMN logo on one side and your username on the other. The winner will also receive a badge and 80MS. Only a full game can win this prize.

2nd Place will receive a badge and 60MS.

3rd Place will receive a badge and 40MS.

All others will receive a badge and 25MS.

Placings will be picked by vote, but only votes by those who have been on the site before the competition started will count, so calling on tumblr or reddit to swing you to win won't work.

For those who don't recall (or know) we do have an engines page in case you've no idea where to start. You can also start checking out the different engines right away. Dive on in!

To sumbit:
Create a game page for your game, abiding by the rules of the site. It is highly recommended that you do this at least a few days before the end of the event!

Upload your game to the gamepage and then click the Submit button at the top of this page. From there you can choose the download you mean to submit.

This must all be done before the end date of the competition.

FAQ

Is RPG Toolkit taken as a clone engine?
I'm gonna go with yes and say 'Go challenge yourself, mate'. There's a lot of engines out there. We have a huge list of them on the engines page and a bunch of them are free.

Does it have to cooperate with Windows 7?
Make it compatible with at least Windows XP and 7. If people can't play your game they can't vote for it after all. Also, yes, PC Master race.

Will there be any theme or more guidelines given?
There might be additions to the guidelines depending on questions asked, though that will be more clarification. No theme.

So I can start working on ma gam right now?
Is it October yet? The start and end dates are shown in the top-right corner of the page, under the submit and management buttons. You can mess around to get used to an engine, but no actually making a start on your game. Brainstorming is fine, though. No concrete work!

I've been probably spending 10% of my time writing and 90% of my time researching religion and belief.

Hopefully it'll come together before the 31st.

All I got done today was spriteset image loading and a unit cursor.

Those sprites look really nice~
I managed to sit down and code a dynamic event system for Ren'Py xD The user could actually add events to the game if they had instructions as to how (it's just a matter of naming labels a certain way). It'll be super easy to create chronological events now :3 I even have four channels set up: "override" events that run before each user decision, "day-only" events that run on certain days, "event times" events that run only when the user has done that event a certain number of times, and "default" events that run when the other three return false.
It's kinda like Ren'Py's DSE, but easier to implement and prettier :D
That's odd...I'm feeling fairly sick, too.

I'm sick.

Chicken soup, orange juice, and plenty of rest should help pass that by faster.

Someone please transform into me and work in my game for the next three days.
I'm sick.

I'm kind of struggling with my entry as well. There are a lot of things I want my Stencyl game to have (to make it interesting) that feels like you have to bend over backwards to implement, and I'm having trouble figuring those out correctly.

... I do have a back-up plan, though.
Hey, this is a little out of the blue, but I've decided to leave the competition. I have several reasons why:

1. Though Fall Break is here for me, I have other things to focus on which divert my attention from my game designs
2. I'm so new to Game Maker, I've barely even created a good level.
3. I'm greatly stressed out lately, so I need a lot of rest.
4. Family things get in the way. It sucks, but I have to attend these events.

While I would love to stay and continue with my entry, I've lost a lot of time, I'm too stressed to work on my games, and other hodge-podge.

I wish you guys the best of luck on your entries, and I take my leave from this competition. See ya!
Real event processing is working, and turns now work. Once I implement real unit creation and movement, it will actually behave liek gam :D

The deadline is the end of Oct.
I would probably submit a game page prior to October 25 just to be safe.
It takes a couple days at least to get accepted.
Oh I completely forgot there needed to be a gamepage D:
Would it be a problem to submit a page now?

Also @Mirak I'm making a 2d platformer, kinda like Cave Story.
Well, a gamepage doesn't mean a finished (or even especially playable) game.

What are you doing?

And well i say 7 days because if i don't submit a gamepage in the 20th there's no telling if it'll get accepted or not in a span of 10 days. Ideally i'd like to have all days until the 30th available for developing my shmup but since you also have to face the submission guidelines and review period, there's a lot less time than expected.
Must be nice living in the future Mirak ;_;

I've gotten a lot more done than I thought I would. Once I get the hang of enemy AI (in Game Maker), it should be smooth sailing.

Starting to feel the pressure. There's too much to be done and only 7 days left.

But my math class assignment is to program a resource management game. Can I submit that? (I probably wont, even if I finish it)

If it's made within the month of October and in an engine that isn't RPG Maker, sure! In fact, I'd encourage you.
I really wanted to do something for this, but unfortunately I have too much schoolwork.

Wow an rts! That sounds super difficult.
You must be a very good programmer.

It's a turn-based strategy game. Think a mix of Fire Emblem and Sim City. The engine is full-custom, and the graphical and audio assets are all original.

So it's probably going to be kind of ugly and buggy. But hey, I made it myself :)

I decided to make a few technical restrictions on the engine's implementation. It's written in honest ANSI C. But I am not using any loops, only recursion.

I'm writing an original software renderer (now with full alpha blending and color masking), and it's using the font rendering engine and the JSON parser I wrote for the McBacon Jam 2 game. I've taken the audio plugin I wrote for TurboSphere and I'm using the guts of that for audio.

EDIT:
Now with buildings working (well...'working'...)

I've got windowstyles, font drawing, and audio playback working now.

Soon I'll be able to actually start making content =P
I'm genuinelly curious to know what you're making.
