Description

Last year you made new games of horror and suspense. This year we're doing something different. Break out your ouija boards, people, and get prepared to tackle some ghosts!

It's time to raise the dead...

This is an event that will focus on breathing new life in to old games, to taking from the past and remaking the future.

The idea of the competition is to take an old game and rework it back into being. It can be a cancelled project, a project idea that didn't work out or something you lost in the past for whatever reason. You can build off the base of the old project or start something new using the ideas that you had. Revive, rework, restore, remake... it's up to you. As long as something of the original project remains then it counts.

Each entry will gain two badges - one for participation and one for the area in which they worked.

Those areas are:=
Revival - Taking parts of a dead project and bringing it back. Parts can include resources, ideas, systems and the like. Note that it doesn't have to be built off the remains of a game, but should have something of the old game in it. You can, however, use the old game as base if you want to. Needs to be a complete game, though.

Rebirth - Taking the ideas that you once had in an old game and reusing them to build a new game instead. This game shouldn't be the old game - it should be new, but use ideas and such that are old. Needs to be a complete game, though.

Reanimate - Taking an old project and building off it in the intent to finish. You do not need to complete the game - a new build or demo with sufficient additions will grant you this badge.

Readying - Taking part and trying, even if all you end up with are words on a page. This will be granted to people who take part in the comment section when certain questions and mini-challenges are thrown there.

At the end of the event the four judges will pick their favourite game each and award a special prize. There will also be a prize for the Most Valuable Participator.

Judges for this event are Nessiah, Unity, Gourd and Liberty.

+ You must start reworking your dead projects/ideas on the 1st of October and have until the 30th to finish. All are due on the 30th of October, 12 Midnight, EST.

+ Games must have all files included that have been used. If you don't know how to set it so that no RTP is required, just ask.

+ The main focus of your game must come from an old idea, lost or cancelled game or series of ideas/games.

+ The game must be complete at the deadline to count for a badge and MS. If it is not complete, you can still gain a participation badge by participating in the discussions and feedback in the comment section of this event.

+ You may have more than one team, more than one game. Teams of up to ten are allowed.

+ You may use any engine you wish.

+ When you add your complete game, please me know which category it falls under.

Any questions and queries, ask in the comments below.

Any questions, just ask and... first participation minvent is a go!
Which of your games are you thinking about using for this event?

The games that come to mind are The Secret of Ludia (Canned), Slimy the Sahagin (Completed but shitty), and a game I never put up called Blue Man Dan (Completed but shitty). All of my ideas as to how to rework those games are way too ambitious for the 1 month span, though.
LockeZ
I'd really like to get rid of LockeZ. His play style is way too unpredictable. He's always like this too. If he ran a country, he'd just kill and imprison people at random until crime stopped.

Fair warning, there might be a lot of comments for this event so if you don't want your inbox inundated it might be a good idea to go into your subscription settings and turn notifications for it off.

Wouldn't it make more sense to just disable comments so this isn't a problem in the first place? No participant has said anything worth saying so far, nor can I even imagine anything that would be worth saying, in this or in any other non-cooperative event. However, I absolutely don't want to miss any posts by the moderators, even if I have to sort through over a hundred spam posts for every meaningful post.
Thing is that there will be participation in the form of commenting, so for this event we want the comments enabled (and I don't think we could disable them anyway. It's not an option for event pages... maybe we should look into that for future ones, though.)

Also, perhaps we should offer the option to let people get notifications only from judges/mods of events, too. It's worth suggesting. As it stands, if you like I can send you a PM every time an important announcement is made, though I don't think there'll be that many. We'll see.

Way back in the day I tried to make a huge, 50+ hour RPG project with 9 main characters that each had their own quests and were supposed to join up to make one major awesome party. The game kept getting bigger and bigger but it never got done. Perhaps I'll take one character's quest and make it into a complete game.

Another option is take an almost finished project that never got the last touches on it and finish it up with better writing.

My biggest worry is that back then I ripped graphics willy-nilly so I'm not sure who to credit. Dunno if I should remake the graphics or just hope I don't offend too many without the proper credits ^^;;

Bleh. It's not that big a deal, but that would be a good option to have for future events. Spam away I guess.

Man. If I were running a "comment participation event" it would be a reverse one, to reward people for shutting the hell up. Something like "Some of you might want to talk about what game you are thinking of using for this event. Please don't. Anyone who completes the event without talking about this gets an extra 5 makerscore at the end."

It's not that I'm an asocial asshole, it's just that okay I'm totally an asocial asshole.

Anyway, gonna try to revive a flower-picking simulator I've already abandoned three times over the past five years.

Alright, so I just tweaked the event a little. Each judge will pick their personal favourite game of those released. Demos will now count, and there's an MVP award for the comment activities that will be going on.

Thank you! The biggest motivator for me is personal approval. I just want people to think I'm a good game maker. I know, it's shallow. But it keeps me going.

Edit: But really though LockeZ, people like me enjoy participating in the comments. I get a high from seeing a big number in my notices feed.
Right, so I'm going to try reviving one of my old games that I always look back at and say 'one day...' to. Love's Requiem, a game I hold dear to my heart and just allowed to balloon out of control. Initially it was supposed to be a short, small game but nope.

I'm going to force it back into that small shape once more. >:| It's going on a diet!
Question!

The game has to be already on RMN or it can be a game that I cancelled
but never talked about it in here?
It does not need to be a game you ever shared, let alone posted on RMN. I know a lot of people have games hidden in old folders that they never showed the world and they're just as eligible as others who have vaporware at their fingers. So, yes, that's fine~

You just made us remember something, and now we are so in.

Actually, I'm thinking about using the game I started for last year's Halloween contest (which, in retrospect, wasn't that Halloween-ish).

E: Are demos allowed for the "Revival" or "Rebirth" categories? You said they're allowed in an earlier post, but the rules still state that it needs to be a complete game for those categories.
1st Mini Quest: Which of your games are you thinking about using for this event?

I really want to revisit Alchemist: Naia. I always intended to flesh out the game since it was rushed and unpolished during the last contest I entered. Either that or continue Naia's story in a proper game.
The theme of this event is amazing. *checks old games*

I know, it's like getting out your old toys you haven't played with in forever.
I already talked about my Twine fan-game, but I've also got a bunch of Knytt Stories levels I want to finish up. Would that kind of thing be appreciated for this event? They're kind of like mods for the original game.

I dug my NES, SNES, and N64 out of storage.

Also, I will be responding to pointless comments in this thread with more pointless anecdotes, to annoy LockeZ.

This should have been an Easter event.

...If I can't beat em, might as well join em.
Zombies and Easter wouldn't mix well, now, would they? Maybe we could make horror games next Easter in lieu of this Halloween~ XD

To join, or not... I better decide fast.

Edit:Yep. might as well get off my ass and try to get something out.

What are you talking about? Easter is the celebration of the anniversary of the resurrection date of the original zombie.
