Description

Last year you made new games of horror and suspense. This year we're doing something different. Break out your ouija boards, people, and get prepared to tackle some ghosts!

It's time to raise the dead...

This is an event that will focus on breathing new life in to old games, to taking from the past and remaking the future.

The idea of the competition is to take an old game and rework it back into being. It can be a cancelled project, a project idea that didn't work out or something you lost in the past for whatever reason. You can build off the base of the old project or start something new using the ideas that you had. Revive, rework, restore, remake... it's up to you. As long as something of the original project remains then it counts.

Each entry will gain two badges - one for participation and one for the area in which they worked.

Those areas are:=
Revival - Taking parts of a dead project and bringing it back. Parts can include resources, ideas, systems and the like. Note that it doesn't have to be built off the remains of a game, but should have something of the old game in it. You can, however, use the old game as base if you want to. Needs to be a complete game, though.

Rebirth - Taking the ideas that you once had in an old game and reusing them to build a new game instead. This game shouldn't be the old game - it should be new, but use ideas and such that are old. Needs to be a complete game, though.

Reanimate - Taking an old project and building off it in the intent to finish. You do not need to complete the game - a new build or demo with sufficient additions will grant you this badge.

Readying - Taking part and trying, even if all you end up with are words on a page. This will be granted to people who take part in the comment section when certain questions and mini-challenges are thrown there.

At the end of the event the four judges will pick their favourite game each and award a special prize. There will also be a prize for the Most Valuable Participator.

Judges for this event are Nessiah, Unity, Gourd and Liberty.

+ You must start reworking your dead projects/ideas on the 1st of October and have until the 30th to finish. All are due on the 30th of October, 12 Midnight, EST.

+ Games must have all files included that have been used. If you don't know how to set it so that no RTP is required, just ask.

+ The main focus of your game must come from an old idea, lost or cancelled game or series of ideas/games.

+ The game must be complete at the deadline to count for a badge and MS. If it is not complete, you can still gain a participation badge by participating in the discussions and feedback in the comment section of this event.

+ You may have more than one team, more than one game. Teams of up to ten are allowed.

+ You may use any engine you wish.

+ When you add your complete game, please me know which category it falls under.

Any questions and queries, ask in the comments below.

This is not what I expected for a contest theme... but it's neat :D

This won't really spawn games that has anything to do with Halloween. What I liked about the old events was that I could sit down and play some games that got me in the mood for Halloween.

This event's kind of cool in its own way, but, yeah, I pretty much agree; I was kind of hoping to make a new contest horror game this year. Too, I just haven't really been around long enough to have abandoned projects, and I don't really want to revisit stuff I'm finished with, so I don't have any material, anyway. Good luck to the entrants, though!

Zombies and Easter wouldn't mix well, now, would they? Maybe we could make horror games next Easter in lieu of this Halloween~ XD
What are you talking about? Easter is the celebration of the anniversary of the resurrection date of the original zombie.
Osiris?
Also, (and this justifies a new comment imho) do you guys really need a contest to justify you making a new horror game? Can't you just... go and make a new horror game?
Seriously, we've had a bunch of horror games made all year (trust me, the amount is about as much as the typical RPG fare. Weird year for gammak) and nothing it stopping you from making a horror game that uses ideas from an older project after all.

Besides, we do that every year so changing it up ain't gonna kill the budgie~

I'd really like to get rid of LockeZ. His play style is way too unpredictable. He's always like this too. If he ran a country, he'd just kill and imprison people at random until crime stopped.

The number of horror games on RMN is crazy high. A lot of hardcore gamers aren't even aware the genre exists, and here it literally makes up 10% of the finished games on the site.

Yep, pretty much.
I don't have any old gams to revive. May have to sit this one out and work on finishing my resources and polishing Enelysion.

Depending on your time zone, you might still have an hour to start and then abandon one before Oct 1!

Play stupid games, win stupid prizes.

Let the revival/overhaul/whatever of an old, sucky 2006 demo of mine begin...
(and no, not many people saw it and I'm certain it hasn't ever graced the internet)

Okay, honestly. Consider the rules of the contest...it can be a game you have never ever announced to so much as your psychotic, mutant kitten. If you hadn't said anything, how would the judges even have known you didn't have an abandoned project to revive?

I would have more makerscore If I did things.

I'm going to rebirth Slimey's new adventure, as previously stated!

But it's tradition. ;_;

Q: Is it allowed to "finish" games that were just in the idea state? Because in that case, I'm in for some Halloween themed gam mak.
As long as it was an idea that you had sort-of planned in some way and put some decent thought in to.
"Someone should make a Dangan Ronpa fangame..."
vs
"Hm... a DR fangame which follows x character and it turns out all the people were just multiple personalities of the main protagonist and he was in a healing coma 'killing off' the other personalities so that he could be mentally stable again... Ooh, and this person can do this thing and he seems like he's the villain but really he's the voice of the dream weaver dude who's helping him kill off the different personalities! And the love interest is based on a girl he liked in the first grade so he has..." and so on.

It can't just be a 'oh this would be cool', it had to have had some thought put into it.

Of course, I wouldn't know the difference but I'm throwing trust out there to all you lovely people~

Okay, well, if I do anything for this at all, it would be Legacy Reborn. I'd pretty much have to start from scratch, in regards to mapping (Darigaaz, definitely this), game-balance in general...

Oh, who am I kidding? I would practically be starting a new game.

The hardest thing for me with rebooting Legacy Reborn? Not so much needing to remap literally everything (Though, that alone does make me not want to mess with it). Not so much a really close inspection of how I want to balance the game. Of all things, it's going to be distancing myself from it's RPG Maker 2000 roots in regards to it's music.

*Edit: Even now, I cannot imaging doing Tomika's tower without "Boss1". Or having the battle music being anything but "Trial".

Listen Listen! I wasn't too into the theme of the contest but FOMAR HIMSELF! FOMAR! Not me prodding him! Said to retake and complete In Search of Dragons, which was in the "dead, should finish somtime" shelf! I am so happy I don't even.
YES IMMA COMPLETE YOU, YOU LOVELY FIRST REAL PROJECT I COULD NEVER FINISH

Hey, I like competing. I wouldn't tell kids not to play in competitive sports because they can just play in the backyard with their friends; there's value in the competition itself. Without that driving me, I feel more compelled to work on long term projects. Really, this competition looks like fun and I'm just cranky that I don't have the backlog to make something I believe in. It's cool, though; I just wanted to hiss for a second and slither back into my cave.

Which of your games are you thinking about using for this event?

I started a game in Twine in attempt to figure out how to use it, but it got abandoned pretty quickly. I'm thinking about taking the ideas and designs from that and translating it to a small Ace game so I can figure out how to use Ace since I just got it.

I love having deadlines, they make me actually do stuff.
