Description

Last year you made new games of horror and suspense. This year we're doing something different. Break out your ouija boards, people, and get prepared to tackle some ghosts!

It's time to raise the dead...

This is an event that will focus on breathing new life in to old games, to taking from the past and remaking the future.

The idea of the competition is to take an old game and rework it back into being. It can be a cancelled project, a project idea that didn't work out or something you lost in the past for whatever reason. You can build off the base of the old project or start something new using the ideas that you had. Revive, rework, restore, remake... it's up to you. As long as something of the original project remains then it counts.

Each entry will gain two badges - one for participation and one for the area in which they worked.

Those areas are:=
Revival - Taking parts of a dead project and bringing it back. Parts can include resources, ideas, systems and the like. Note that it doesn't have to be built off the remains of a game, but should have something of the old game in it. You can, however, use the old game as base if you want to. Needs to be a complete game, though.

Rebirth - Taking the ideas that you once had in an old game and reusing them to build a new game instead. This game shouldn't be the old game - it should be new, but use ideas and such that are old. Needs to be a complete game, though.

Reanimate - Taking an old project and building off it in the intent to finish. You do not need to complete the game - a new build or demo with sufficient additions will grant you this badge.

Readying - Taking part and trying, even if all you end up with are words on a page. This will be granted to people who take part in the comment section when certain questions and mini-challenges are thrown there.

At the end of the event the four judges will pick their favourite game each and award a special prize. There will also be a prize for the Most Valuable Participator.

Judges for this event are Nessiah, Unity, Gourd and Liberty.

+ You must start reworking your dead projects/ideas on the 1st of October and have until the 30th to finish. All are due on the 30th of October, 12 Midnight, EST.

+ Games must have all files included that have been used. If you don't know how to set it so that no RTP is required, just ask.

+ The main focus of your game must come from an old idea, lost or cancelled game or series of ideas/games.

+ The game must be complete at the deadline to count for a badge and MS. If it is not complete, you can still gain a participation badge by participating in the discussions and feedback in the comment section of this event.

+ You may have more than one team, more than one game. Teams of up to ten are allowed.

+ You may use any engine you wish.

+ When you add your complete game, please me know which category it falls under.

Any questions and queries, ask in the comments below.

Graf as an innkeeper? Darigaaz, that would be hilarious.

I'd really like to get rid of LockeZ. His play style is way too unpredictable. He's always like this too. If he ran a country, he'd just kill and imprison people at random until crime stopped.

Well to start things off I went with both a QoL upgrade and removing something that never should've been in there: Game overs! I have a script in Ace that would run a common event when the party wiped that I spent two minutes on converting to VX and plugged into a half finished (the important half for plugging into this) teleport spell. Now when the party wipes they'll warp with all their vehicles to the last town they were at. Quick a dirty! I thought about a gold penalty but IMO that'd defeat the point of it. The player can save anywhere including between battles in dungeons (dungeons are just a gauntlet of battles) and losing gold would either prompt a reload anyways or frustrate the player in that they lost gold because they weren't perfectly diligent about saving. Items consumed in battle are still lost because I don't have a script handy for that and finding (and adapting) one now will probably end up burying the project. Again.

Since I was changing the town code anyways I changed it so the town prompt loops until the player explicitly leaves. This'll give the town theme more time to play if the player just hits up the stupid RNG bar (which sadly will be staying). That, a few small name/flavour changes, and replacing a character's old lv10 skill with a new one (because it was a. a duplicate b. a fucking elemental resist skill, you'd think I would've learned after DG, and c. doesn't fit the character motif at all) was tonight's work!

Next up I'm going to redo the early game dungeons and enemies. The original enemy design was create some enemy tiers and throw six or seven enemies and a boss and use random assortments in each tier of dungeon. It's super boring and that's before getting to the part where most enemies simply attack because I didn't have time to give them an AI. I'm probably going to add some dungeon exclusive palette swaps, set up dungeon encounters so it isn't the same grab bag for every fight, and maybe make a few midboss fights. Nothing extensive, just quick and dirty to make it not total garbage.
Err... I don't get it.
I mean, does it have to be my game or someone else's?
Also, I've a lot of dead bodies ideas buried beneath a rock, but I've no evidence whatsoever that they are indeed dead ideas...

Would someone kindly explain it to me please? I'd love to join in :3

Ps. Love the layout, by the way...

Your ideas.

Any game, any game at all that you started to make and for whatever reason stopped. You shelved it. You killed it. You chopped it into tiny pieces and did a Pagan ritual to make sure it never came back. You took a break from it but in the past ten years, just haven't gotten around to it. That's what she's talking about. She wants you take one of those and either create a new idea from the old one, or revive it completely. Demo or complete game. You can do either, but only a complete game will get the Revived or Rebirthed badge. A demo will only get as much as the Reanimate badge.
^This and I love the imagery you provided~

I think I'm gonna make this.

It's an exploration game. I don't even know what else it is at this point.
It’s still 10x more work than I’ve done on my entry in the past couple of days.

Really, I think the only thing I’ve done thus far is eat a Long John and scratch myself for a couple of hours. Hopefully, inspiration will soon follow.
And I'm in! Thanks pianotm (awesome explanation, dude)

I'll start remaking that old rp game I made in stencyl.

I just realized that the project I'm going to be finishing was started over a decade ago. O-O

Well, at least you guys have picked your tools, I still can't even decide which one of my old projects to bring back. I currently have 2 cancelled games (started before me joining RMN) and 1 on hiatus. All three ideas are very grand yet raw, and I'm also not sure any of them can be realised in a month — that is, unless I go with saving on presentation and focusing more on storytelling and gameplay.

Are there any where you can take the basic essence or feeling you wanted to convey and make it into a much more manageable size without sacrificing what you were going for? Or perhaps taking the beginning of the story and making that into a short game (which could have sequels?)
This contest is dredging up some stuff I had forgotten about a long time ago. Left to die in a corner of my Documents folder. Fortunately I have had an idea brewing for awhile that I think will make for a good game. Holding off on entering the contest officially until I have some substantial work to show though.
I don't know if I would join or not. But I do have 2 old project that was thrown out of the window maybe I will revisit those two cancelled game story-line and start working on it.

After the game is done, if it's popular, you can add this as a paid feature. Pay 25 cents for a continue. Whee! It's like the arcade all over again!

I started spriting last night. Decided to make some of the items in my game be outfits you can switch between instead of just passively always working as long as they're in your inventory. It is hard to draw bunny slippers on a 16-bit sprite.

!!!

Wow! I've decided to just use RTP, except my two main characters (and maybe my main villain). I've already got enough of a working game for a demo, and at this point, it's better than the disaster I made for the RM Birthday Event.

For the true arcade simulation after reaching the endgame dying won't prompt for more money to continue. It'll just take you back to the title screen waiting for you to start from scratch again. Maybe add big flashing text going "GETGUD" with The Price is Right failure horn playing constantly when the player dies at this point.
Since finishing within the time limit is a priority, I decided to make a single map (17x13 tiles) for my whole game. Similar to Craze's Epic Monster Dungeon Explore! 2.
Here's an early version with mostly placeholder graphics (probably :P).

Encounters happen on red exclamation points and in "dungeons".
Might make seperate maps for the dungeons, if I'm not too slow with my entry.
