Description

Last year you made new games of horror and suspense. This year we're doing something different. Break out your ouija boards, people, and get prepared to tackle some ghosts!

It's time to raise the dead...

This is an event that will focus on breathing new life in to old games, to taking from the past and remaking the future.

The idea of the competition is to take an old game and rework it back into being. It can be a cancelled project, a project idea that didn't work out or something you lost in the past for whatever reason. You can build off the base of the old project or start something new using the ideas that you had. Revive, rework, restore, remake... it's up to you. As long as something of the original project remains then it counts.

Each entry will gain two badges - one for participation and one for the area in which they worked.

Those areas are:=
Revival - Taking parts of a dead project and bringing it back. Parts can include resources, ideas, systems and the like. Note that it doesn't have to be built off the remains of a game, but should have something of the old game in it. You can, however, use the old game as base if you want to. Needs to be a complete game, though.

Rebirth - Taking the ideas that you once had in an old game and reusing them to build a new game instead. This game shouldn't be the old game - it should be new, but use ideas and such that are old. Needs to be a complete game, though.

Reanimate - Taking an old project and building off it in the intent to finish. You do not need to complete the game - a new build or demo with sufficient additions will grant you this badge.

Readying - Taking part and trying, even if all you end up with are words on a page. This will be granted to people who take part in the comment section when certain questions and mini-challenges are thrown there.

At the end of the event the four judges will pick their favourite game each and award a special prize. There will also be a prize for the Most Valuable Participator.

Judges for this event are Nessiah, Unity, Gourd and Liberty.

+ You must start reworking your dead projects/ideas on the 1st of October and have until the 30th to finish. All are due on the 30th of October, 12 Midnight, EST.

+ Games must have all files included that have been used. If you don't know how to set it so that no RTP is required, just ask.

+ The main focus of your game must come from an old idea, lost or cancelled game or series of ideas/games.

+ The game must be complete at the deadline to count for a badge and MS. If it is not complete, you can still gain a participation badge by participating in the discussions and feedback in the comment section of this event.

+ You may have more than one team, more than one game. Teams of up to ten are allowed.

+ You may use any engine you wish.

+ When you add your complete game, please me know which category it falls under.

Any questions and queries, ask in the comments below.

I never made a title screen for my original game but here's what I concocted for this reiteration.

I was messing around with some lighting in a map earlier. Maybe not the most professional job, but, eh. Also, I think I just want to skip ahead to a small conversation followed up by the boss fight rather than... whatever I was trying to do before.

Wait. I'm doing stuff? Reality check...

Error loading program. (A)bort, (R)etry, (F)ail.
Personally I am a big fan of giving up on aesthetic things if you're having too much trouble with it, because it is SUPER EASY to go back to it later. Better to have working events and gameplay that make sense than a Custom Fog System that works and no game, after all!
Very much agreed. I feel that too many people get hung up on pretties that they get burned out way before ever getting some game parts done. :o

Which of your games are you thinking about using for this event?
I never actually answered this one.
Looks like it'll be parts a very old VX project that played on a board like overworld map, and parts Pandora's Present sequel I abandoned for being too ambitious.

Thinking back on it, maybe I should've revived Finsterling instead (the only game on my profile I haven't finished yet)...too late for that now though!

Edit: Very jealous of all these old title screens btw. Now I wish I had made some too back then. :(
RPG20XX is already technically a reanimation since January, but there needs to be a special condition for this event.

I took from the old archive of the RPG Maker 2003 engine replacement the list of completed functionality.

http://rpgmaker.net/users/WolfCoder/locker/require.ods

The old project I killed in 2012 was estimated at 78% complete according to this spreadsheet. The condition for victory will be to reach this level of completeness in RPG20XX commands before the 30th.

RPG20XX only has a few commands right now. Neither had a working battle system, but if the above functionality is implemented with RPG20XX's existing features, a game becomes possible.
Oh noes. All I have to bring back is Descendant of Truth D: It's too big to finish in one month!

At least it will motivate me to port it to VX Ace.
Someone should take on Bio Force Ape, and finish it, the way it was always intended to be (or, er, should have intended to have been...):

Im bringing up 'Memory', my first ever rpgmaker game. I woked on it for half a year before putting it aside because of school. Now, it's been a year since, and I'm eager to put it back up.

I've renamed it to 'Via' ' though.
As the eternal plague of RGSS the caterpillar script I'm using fails on F12. Their method of preventing a recursive method call* didn't work but I managed to fix it before wasting too much time on it. I don't want to lose my current one, I hacked it together so when you board a vehicle the caterpillar train boards first then you get on

(I also had to fix an issue where it would crash under certain but undetermined circumstances when loading a game. Not sure why it wasn't consistent but it's fixed now)

While I was scripting I dug up my old marquee window script and replaced the old help windows with it. Now instead of descriptions being too long and getting squeezed in the window will just marquee it if its too long. This makes it easier to fit in equipment stats (which are shown automatically, no more item/description discrepancy!) and descriptions!
Demo GIF:

e: It isn't that choppy in-game, it's smooth. /e:

Finally I pulled and looked over all of the character stats in excel. I didn't like the look of the numbers so I redid most of them! Lots of characters would get +3/+4 stat a level with some characters barely having two stat points apart at times so I widened the gap among a few other things. Time to play test and make the game flow like it did prior to this!

* If you try to alias a method in a class that extends another but doesn't implement the method you're aliasing the alias will fuck up on F12 and alias itself. All method calls to your alias will then just recursively call itself and eventually trip a safeguard and crash the game. Changing
alias new_method old_method
to
alias new_method old_method unless $@
Is the best fix. The caterpillar script checked to see if the method was defined in the extended class before trying to alias. On F12 the check returns true instead of false and it doesn't alias the methods at all which caused the caterpillar characters to sit there and never move.

oh dear lord

This…actually isn’t too shabby, IMO, but it would have been interesting to see just how much it would have had an impact in the end if this ended up being the finalized title screen. I bet you that there would have been no way that Hero’s Realm would have garnered as many downloads as it has over the years if this was the first image that people saw before heading on over to its gamepage and downloading it. But, still, you just never know…

Ahem.

It was 2002.
Even that is probably no excuse.

That tower looks more like a submarine that’s about to fire a freakin' cruise missile while just submerging out of the water, lol.

I like your new title screen muuuchhh better than this one, Maximus. :)

Memories~~~

That said, for all that I messed this image the fuck up... it was originally an anime screencap. Because young me was an idiot, apparently. XD

The image also had sweet fuck all to do with the game itself. I don't know. I just said I was an idiot back then. >.<

…Even I don’t even know what this image is supposed to be even after starring at it for a while. Still, it’s 10x better than anything that they’ve shown at the Vancouver Art Gallery lately.
To me it looks like a heavily mosaic'ed image of a bound and gagged schoolgirl from a disreputable comic
Haha – it kind of looks like it does. :P
;.;
She's playing a flute guys! It's anime chick #8645 playing a flute in the moonlight. Or it was, anyway...
;.;
It looks more like she’s smoking a cigarette to me.

- AND NOT THE KIND OF CIGARETTE THAT YOU’RE THINKING OF!

(...Giggity.)
LockeZ
I'd really like to get rid of LockeZ. His play style is way too unpredictable. He's always like this too. If he ran a country, he'd just kill and imprison people at random until crime stopped.

All I can see is a dude with an amazing beard, a flat-top and a rat-tail.

I was thinking of starting to work on the Seven Tower game. That I was ignoring for the past 2 years. And hopefully release just the preview version for this.

Tell me if this is a valid entry since i didn't bother to touch the game page for a long time.

Rebirth - Taking the ideas that you once had in an old game and reusing them to build a new game instead. This game shouldn't be the old game - it should be new, but use ideas and such that are old. Needs to be a complete game, though.

Edifice was about taking a random party and fighting random enemies on random floors of a tower.

Final Fantasy II was about touching a door and it having a 5/6 chance to warp you to the middle of a room with a really high encounter rate, lovingly called a "monster closet."

Monster Closets is going to be an awful mix of both!

Also, literal closets full of monsters.

(I originally wasn't going to do this because i'm working on my own thing, but oh well!)

I dragged my idea out of my first project. My first project was an enormous sandbox game meant exclusively to figure out how to work RM2K3. I ended up with a few cool things in it. What I'm doing with Risen is basically taking one of the dungeons, expanding it, and turning it into a cheap adventure game. I've put two of my original characters into it and it's basically divided into levels. Gameplay is straight RPG to save time, though if I wanted to, I could copy some of my scripting for a beat 'em up, but then I'd be spending a shitload of time animating, and I don't want to do that. I follow the musician's KISS rule: Keep It Simple, Stupid.

That's the best description of FF2 I've ever heard.
