Description

Last year you made new games of horror and suspense. This year we're doing something different. Break out your ouija boards, people, and get prepared to tackle some ghosts!

It's time to raise the dead...

This is an event that will focus on breathing new life in to old games, to taking from the past and remaking the future.

The idea of the competition is to take an old game and rework it back into being. It can be a cancelled project, a project idea that didn't work out or something you lost in the past for whatever reason. You can build off the base of the old project or start something new using the ideas that you had. Revive, rework, restore, remake... it's up to you. As long as something of the original project remains then it counts.

Each entry will gain two badges - one for participation and one for the area in which they worked.

Those areas are:=
Revival - Taking parts of a dead project and bringing it back. Parts can include resources, ideas, systems and the like. Note that it doesn't have to be built off the remains of a game, but should have something of the old game in it. You can, however, use the old game as base if you want to. Needs to be a complete game, though.

Rebirth - Taking the ideas that you once had in an old game and reusing them to build a new game instead. This game shouldn't be the old game - it should be new, but use ideas and such that are old. Needs to be a complete game, though.

Reanimate - Taking an old project and building off it in the intent to finish. You do not need to complete the game - a new build or demo with sufficient additions will grant you this badge.

Readying - Taking part and trying, even if all you end up with are words on a page. This will be granted to people who take part in the comment section when certain questions and mini-challenges are thrown there.

At the end of the event the four judges will pick their favourite game each and award a special prize. There will also be a prize for the Most Valuable Participator.

Judges for this event are Nessiah, Unity, Gourd and Liberty.

+ You must start reworking your dead projects/ideas on the 1st of October and have until the 30th to finish. All are due on the 30th of October, 12 Midnight, EST.

+ Games must have all files included that have been used. If you don't know how to set it so that no RTP is required, just ask.

+ The main focus of your game must come from an old idea, lost or cancelled game or series of ideas/games.

+ The game must be complete at the deadline to count for a badge and MS. If it is not complete, you can still gain a participation badge by participating in the discussions and feedback in the comment section of this event.

+ You may have more than one team, more than one game. Teams of up to ten are allowed.

+ You may use any engine you wish.

+ When you add your complete game, please me know which category it falls under.

Any questions and queries, ask in the comments below.

Hi Liberty!

Yes we're adding tall grass. Still rough WIP.

Bye Liberty!
It's a great example of how much of a difference execution makes. FF1 does something similar with its rooms that you can only see in while in any one of these rooms that can appear at the end of branching paths. Even if you can see the end of the path you don't know what's in the room. So the player has to go down a path and see what's in it, getting in random encounters along the way. Maybe you'll find the path forward, or a chest, or maybe the room will be empty or have a bat (I don't think FF1 was mean enough to put encounter tiles before rooms).

They're both the same abstract idea but FF2's implementation replaced the walking bits with nothing but spite. FF1's maze structure and branching paths became a simple wall of doors, walking to the end of each path with occasional random encounters became a baffling move where the player is teleported in the middle of a room with an absurd encounter rate, FF1 mixed in this obstacle with others like a simpler maze or a simple open area filled with rooms to explore with loot, FF2 only had this in its bag of tricks and jacked up the frequency by an order of magnitude or two.

Fuck you FF2.

Nah, I won't be rebrithing Slimey's New Adventure. Instead, I'll rebirth a much smaller project!

In seven words it is:

"I wonder which book I shall read..."

There never was a custom title screen, but it's title was
"Monsters' Tales"

I can see some creative potential for logo with that name, I might even draw one out!

It's a bit more than that. There's the hallway to the left on the first floor of the Earth Cave where every tile is an encounter. All non-story relevant bosses are done via trap floors too like the Zombie Dragons in the Castle of Trials or the... Storm? Dragon at the top of the tower in the desert, or the fiend refights. As a kid I wondered if the fiend refights were a one off so I stepped back on the tile after killing Tiamat... and ended up wiping :( I think there's other trap tiles, like enter a room and get in a fight but that could be some fevered memory or a room with a chest right by the door. If there is one it's probably in the ice cave because that's just the kind of place that dungeon is.

Was sum up your game in seven words a thing at some point here?

"Is evil something you are, or something you do?" is nine words, but STFU.

"Your spells are blasphemy, mine are miracles" is seven, though. XD

Saying that with your pikatar is so cute! XD

Also... LONG GRASSSSSSSSSSSS~<3
And those tiles are lovely. I love the sand~ ^.^

@WolfCoder: That grass is likely only for use on desert tiles. They're probably still working on making the proper borders for sand into grass and the like.
I see, that's not an easy problem to solve when you need every terrain to crossfade into each other.

While that sand tile is visually appealing, desert sand only does that without the presence of vegetation (and strong wind), but when you tell someone to draw sand they all make that same wavy pattern (even I do sometimes). It's just kind of weird to me since I live in a desert. Fallout: New Vegas is one of the only games that comes to mind where the sand actually looks like normal desert sand.

So...there was a seven word description, which game we were working on...and was the old title screen one, too?

I'm working on the remake of Cosplay Crisis which is not titled Cosplay Crisis because cosplayers think they're witty and I'm tired of seeing crisis core cosplays in the google search

ANYWAY

seven word description...

...you're right, I feel so sacrilegious right now. Totally forgot about the hall of giants and the fiend bosses.

Zombie Dragons are in front of the rat tail chest, though, iirc. Ice Cavern has spiked tiles only in front of chests (eye for the cube(right?), ice dragon for the fire sword/armor i'm pretty sure, just like the vice-versa for the volcano).

...Craze what sort of hell game are you plotting

and why do I want to play it so badly

Snarky spoof games are the best contest games. I'll try to even make it halloween-y with pumpkin earrings or something, idk

I had to go check youtube to doublecheck and you're right: I knew the Ordeals Zombie Dragon fight was in front of the exit throne but the chest is next to that square too! And yeah, the Eye is in front of the chest with the Floater and there's some dragon guarding Ice? Armor in the Ice Cave. I thought there was one with sorcerers when you entered a room with pits but I can't find any supporting information so it's probably some fevered dream of mine.
New mini-challenge time!!!

Tell us a little about why you dropped the project/ideas
originally and why you decided on this project/idea to work on.
1. Because LIFE IS OVERWHELMING and I just...ended up not working on it for a long time. It's never really been "dropped", but there was at least a solid year of me not touching it and barely thinking about it, so I think it counts. >__>

2. BECAUSE I SWORE I WOULD SEE IT FINIIIIISHED also I really love the fake people involved and I want to torture them/share their hijinks with the world. <3
...look it started out as a more SERIOUS GAM and has ended up very light-hearted and comedic and non-lethal (I think one character dies??? Maybe???? Like not even random enemy scrubs die: they just become too demoralized to fight), and I like it much better this way. ;w;
1. Diapers, mostly. And soccer, preschool, swimming lessons, work, bills, skating, gymnastics, music class, etc. Any downtime I had was devoted to playing games or watching movies.

2. I went with Aether Pulse because it is the furthest along so has a higher likelihood of having something worth showing in the end.

I dropped Legacy Reborn pretty much in response to an LP/LT, applying some of what I gleaned from said LP/LT to a different project. Also, it seemed like an easier task for the purposes of this event than hacking together something playable for Nakaishi Wars (a sci-fi setting with tactical combat).

Though, one could probably argue that if I get anything done for this event at all, it would be a hack attempt.

You're magical to me.

1) I dropped the project because it served as basically training-wheels for me to learn RPG making. I felt like I should move on to something new. Granted, over the years I did go back on two occasions and try to bring it up to a releasable state, but even those ending up with me setting the project aside.

2) I picked this one for nostalgia, as it was my first attempt at a big, whole world RPG. Also, I think people might get a kick out of seeing something that I did so long ago being revived XD

Didn't really dropped them but more like on hiatus.

work. baby. work. money.
I went with remaking since it's probably the one with the highest chance of getting done this month than porcup.
