Description

Last year you made new games of horror and suspense. This year we're doing something different. Break out your ouija boards, people, and get prepared to tackle some ghosts!

It's time to raise the dead...

This is an event that will focus on breathing new life in to old games, to taking from the past and remaking the future.

The idea of the competition is to take an old game and rework it back into being. It can be a cancelled project, a project idea that didn't work out or something you lost in the past for whatever reason. You can build off the base of the old project or start something new using the ideas that you had. Revive, rework, restore, remake... it's up to you. As long as something of the original project remains then it counts.

Each entry will gain two badges - one for participation and one for the area in which they worked.

Those areas are:=
Revival - Taking parts of a dead project and bringing it back. Parts can include resources, ideas, systems and the like. Note that it doesn't have to be built off the remains of a game, but should have something of the old game in it. You can, however, use the old game as base if you want to. Needs to be a complete game, though.

Rebirth - Taking the ideas that you once had in an old game and reusing them to build a new game instead. This game shouldn't be the old game - it should be new, but use ideas and such that are old. Needs to be a complete game, though.

Reanimate - Taking an old project and building off it in the intent to finish. You do not need to complete the game - a new build or demo with sufficient additions will grant you this badge.

Readying - Taking part and trying, even if all you end up with are words on a page. This will be granted to people who take part in the comment section when certain questions and mini-challenges are thrown there.

At the end of the event the four judges will pick their favourite game each and award a special prize. There will also be a prize for the Most Valuable Participator.

Judges for this event are Nessiah, Unity, Gourd and Liberty.

+ You must start reworking your dead projects/ideas on the 1st of October and have until the 30th to finish. All are due on the 30th of October, 12 Midnight, EST.

+ Games must have all files included that have been used. If you don't know how to set it so that no RTP is required, just ask.

+ The main focus of your game must come from an old idea, lost or cancelled game or series of ideas/games.

+ The game must be complete at the deadline to count for a badge and MS. If it is not complete, you can still gain a participation badge by participating in the discussions and feedback in the comment section of this event.

+ You may have more than one team, more than one game. Teams of up to ten are allowed.

+ You may use any engine you wish.

+ When you add your complete game, please me know which category it falls under.

Any questions and queries, ask in the comments below.

New mini-challenge time!!!

Tell us a little about why you dropped the project/ideas
originally and why you decided on this project/idea to work on.

It was never a serious project. Every iteration of it has been 'I want to test these mechanics and use these graphics!' ...And hilariously enough, that's the same reason yet again.

But this time, I actually came up with a story for it, and I've gotten rather attached to this iteration of the cast. So I'd like to do something more substantial with them.

1) When we originally discussed this idea, we just didn't have a high enough skill level to do much with it. Learning a completely new engine was daunting to me, and Maki lacked the consistency and speed for the number of portraits/backgrounds/etc it required.

2) We tend to mention the idea at least once a year, usually with a "I wish we had time to work on this," and this event seemed like a great reason to finally bring it to life.

I'd really like to get rid of LockeZ. His play style is way too unpredictable. He's always like this too. If he ran a country, he'd just kill and imprison people at random until crime stopped.

Flower Bubble Game!!! originally didn't get "cancelled" so much as denied by RMN. It looked like shit, so the denial was very justified. But it was actually "finished" a good 3-4 years before I submitted it to RMN, and I didn't really care about the game at all, so when the submission was denied, improving the game to meet RMN standards wasn't really worth seriously considering.

After spending time here at RMN I learned a lot more about mapping and design in general, and also started to take gane design much more seriously. I also began to understand that releasing games was good and worthwhile even if they weren't my dream game. So I picked it back up with the intention of replacing all the graphics and remapping the whole game - which was only a single map, but a 300x300 map. This proved to be pretty time consuming and obnoxious so I quit again. Didn't seem worth the effort and I simply got sick of it.

But I was almost halfway done redoing the game when I quit the second time. Which means that of my cancelled games, this one was by far the closest to completion. So if I were gonna pick one up to resurrect, and had only a month, Flower Bubble Game!!! was the obvious choice.

I wrote an explanation on July 6th, 2012.

What is not said there is I also assumed EasyRPG would have taken up their banner to the finish line. Not only that, EasyRPG still has/had project conversion from RPG Maker 2003.

But

and why you decided on this project/idea to work on.

They have not.

Nothing has changed about me having lots of research to do, and I'm even busier than before. However, I took my own advice and decided to create a standalone RPG creation kit that does it right. Nobody has yet - there is still a significant population of RPG Maker 2003 users. I've got to do this after all.

That's actually a decision made in January, I am here in this event to see how much I can accomplish before the 30th. I've got detailed software requirements right here that I can use to prove if I have accomplished the task or not. It's to see how fast I can go.

Will I make it? Let's see.

(I'm also doing the draw-your-own-stuff thing at the same time since I can't proceed in features without doing so).

edifice wsa dropped because it was too damn huge and i had a hard time sticking with projects

Tidy Closet Squad is relatively small, and the town IS the dungeon!!!! soo that should help cut down on mapping (while still keeping the idea of fighting hordes of random monsters in a goofy setting).

I'm jumping in (if it isn't already too late to do so) with an old game of mine from early 2003 called Mystic Quest. I canned it because I had school and so many other things I wanted to work on (like a remake of FF9 in Rm2k).

Why'd I pick it back up? I mean, c'mon, even with just a short 5 minute demo, the game was already going to have a sequel coming out later that year (I also made a short demo of that) and my old friend - one of the last times I spoke to him in person - is "still waiting for it".

Mmm, so good.
Finally have something to show.

NICE, Kentona.
1.) I dropped the project because I had to focus on my schooling, being a graduating student and all at that time.

2.) It just seems like the right thing to do: Revive my first ever rpgmaker game. The game that started it all :3

I canceled the game in the first place because it was too random,
Then I decided to continue with it because it was too random to let it go.

Choices: A Ship Full of Zombies

Awwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww yeah.
I dropped the project because I moved to Ace and wanted to mess around with the engine with new games instead of an older one.

I picked it back up because it's one of the more complete (and short) games I've created so far, even though I had a lot of issues with it due to some weird graphical error. >.<;

Whew/ I'm really falling behind here. Anyway here's what will probably be the title screen. The old game was in Twine so there isn't really an old title screen to show.

It got scrapped because I was too busy to work on it. I'm probably still too busy to work on it.

I have several projects on hiatus right now but since this game was the shortest I figured it'd be the easiest to actually complete.

because while the original game is a craptastic clusterfuck it has some nice core ideas/plot concepts, which I've used in later projects and I'd like to detail a bit better. You can't really have a sequel if the first game is unplayable (though that doesn't seem to deter Square Enix, does it?)

Progress? Majority of my progress will be in the later half of the month because I'm finishing up a university semester, but I'm using my demo reel as a means for creating artistic assets for this game. So things like facesets/sprites/UI.

oh and here's the old title screen

uggggggggghhhhhhh
Not sure if I will be participating in this, but seeing as how my main RM game got its real start (by reviving an older project with a much larger scope and less direction), I like that this is an event in the first place.

I really liked the ideas behind Cosplay Crisis. Just not... um, not the game, so much?

It's a huge game to remake, though. Are you planning to fix the old version, or start over?
