Description

Last year you made new games of horror and suspense. This year we're doing something different. Break out your ouija boards, people, and get prepared to tackle some ghosts!

It's time to raise the dead...

This is an event that will focus on breathing new life in to old games, to taking from the past and remaking the future.

The idea of the competition is to take an old game and rework it back into being. It can be a cancelled project, a project idea that didn't work out or something you lost in the past for whatever reason. You can build off the base of the old project or start something new using the ideas that you had. Revive, rework, restore, remake... it's up to you. As long as something of the original project remains then it counts.

Each entry will gain two badges - one for participation and one for the area in which they worked.

Those areas are:=
Revival - Taking parts of a dead project and bringing it back. Parts can include resources, ideas, systems and the like. Note that it doesn't have to be built off the remains of a game, but should have something of the old game in it. You can, however, use the old game as base if you want to. Needs to be a complete game, though.

Rebirth - Taking the ideas that you once had in an old game and reusing them to build a new game instead. This game shouldn't be the old game - it should be new, but use ideas and such that are old. Needs to be a complete game, though.

Reanimate - Taking an old project and building off it in the intent to finish. You do not need to complete the game - a new build or demo with sufficient additions will grant you this badge.

Readying - Taking part and trying, even if all you end up with are words on a page. This will be granted to people who take part in the comment section when certain questions and mini-challenges are thrown there.

At the end of the event the four judges will pick their favourite game each and award a special prize. There will also be a prize for the Most Valuable Participator.

Judges for this event are Nessiah, Unity, Gourd and Liberty.

+ You must start reworking your dead projects/ideas on the 1st of October and have until the 30th to finish. All are due on the 30th of October, 12 Midnight, EST.

+ Games must have all files included that have been used. If you don't know how to set it so that no RTP is required, just ask.

+ The main focus of your game must come from an old idea, lost or cancelled game or series of ideas/games.

+ The game must be complete at the deadline to count for a badge and MS. If it is not complete, you can still gain a participation badge by participating in the discussions and feedback in the comment section of this event.

+ You may have more than one team, more than one game. Teams of up to ten are allowed.

+ You may use any engine you wish.

+ When you add your complete game, please me know which category it falls under.

Any questions and queries, ask in the comments below.

Yes you can, but you have to ask them.
All I managed to do so far this week was break VXA about three times (while messing with the scripts).

Oh, and I got the menu layout done too. And that's about it...

Are we telling how we got our username? Sure. Why not.

When I was about 6 or 7, We had a a Commodore 64. I played my first RPG, then. It was called Might & Magic - Secret of the Inner Sanctum. So did my two older brothers. The game came on floppy disks (Not 3.5" ones. The ones C64 used were bigger, but, I forget the exact dimension delineation.), and we all shared the same disk for saved data. The maximum party size was 6, but, with how we shared data, each of us could only have parties of no greater than 5.

My eldest brother initially named his party members after people we knew. Suffice it to say, one of his characters was named after me. At some point down the line, he renamed his characters. The character that used to be named after me was renamed to "Marrend".

Additional aside: I must admit that the only other name-change I actually recall is the one he named after himself to "Sir Phyrom". "Phyrom" was one of the possible summons that I was considering for Arbiters From Another World, and exists as a database entry, but never made it into the game proper.

Working on this game that I started 12 years ago, my brain's been constantly asking me "unity, is this really good enough to release?"

Despite the fixing I'm doing, a lot of the game's imperfections are going to be on full-display, and the game represents one of my earliest efforts at RPG Making. So my brain keeps going "AGH! The battle-system could be so much better! The characters are too silly! The enemy art looks awful! The story is way too thin and not compelling enough!"

I think that A) I'm being too hard on myself and B) that it's okay to release something that's less than perfect, but I was curious if anyone else was having similar problems?

I might possibly be falling into that trap, unity. I mean, half the idea of this event seems to be to take those crappy old games, and make a better game than what was there to begin with. Which could lead to wanting to fix all the bad that we're seeing. Which probably translates to almost nothing that is even vaguely playable is going to be done by the end of the event.

So, I think the trick is to focus on one aspect of the game, and make that aspect better. Besides, the option to work on the other aspects that you're not happy with would still exist after the event is done.

This is how the game I'm working on never got finished

And that's why for this while I'm working on polishing it but none of the major overhauls that killed my project. The end result won't be a good game but at least it'll be done and I can focus on other projects so they can churn in perpetuity too.

spoiler alert: Redeeming Legacy
LockeZ
I'd really like to get rid of LockeZ. His play style is way too unpredictable. He's always like this too. If he ran a country, he'd just kill and imprison people at random until crime stopped.

This is a difficult thing for RPG designers to understand, because the nature of the genre is built around long-term growth, and even indie RPGs are entirely dominated by very large games, but... I've decided that not every game has to be a masterpiece. Sometimes it's okay to release something that's okay rather than great. That's not really what you want, but is decent enough that you're pretty sure there are people out there who will enjoy it anyway.

You could keep working on it until it's perfect, but wouldn't you rather spend most of that time working on your big project instead? You could abandon it, but wouldn't people still have fun with it? If a few weeks of work isn't enough to make something playable, then yeah, sure, scrap it and move on. But if it is, it seems like that's a small cost for a big benefit.

Anyway, even if you release it, you can always improve it later. This isn't Xbox Live Arcade, you can update and add to your finished games for free at any time.

They were 5 inch floppies. 3.5 inch floppies came later. I still have some. I actually still have my original copy of Chris Roberts' Space Rogue for the Apple IIc with all the books. Commodore 64 was a lot of fun. It was the only computer I've ever had that made learning how to program an essential part of gaming.
Evryone's sharing how they got their usernames so... Before, I went around by the name of 'De$oL8tor'. But a year ago, during a wild math class, me and Karin had differing answers to a certain item. Seeing how she solved it, I told her she was wrong. She didn't believe me, and feeling lucky, she made a bet. She asked for a month's worth of my service (as slave) for anything that I ask for. Humouring her, I whispered: " I want your soul". And so, the deal was made. Guess who won (^.^)

*slave-for-a-month wwas a thing in our class back then. Basically, you just carry stuff, buy food, and do whatever your 'master' tells you to do. Slave hours are from 6am to 6pm. Yeah, we're crazy ;p
While we're at it...

Username Story:

I was playing "5 Days a Stranger" in a laptop, the keyboard didn't
worked properly, only a few keys we're actually working.
While playing I decided to save the game, you needed to name the save file, fuck...
I randomly pressed all the keyboard keys until I got three Js on a row.

The 7 was added later because is my favourite number...And because JJJ was already taken aparently.

Good point. At this stage, just getting it done is good enough for me ^_^

So I was thinking in the bathroom. I hit my head on the counter, and when I woke up, I drew this!

Granted, the official "Tales from Zilmurik" material will be clumped together into the RM2K3 release (Tales from Zilmurik: Origin is still avaiable, however), while the other titles (Legends of Destinies, Feral Solidarity, and Mystic Dawn) are more spiritual prequels/sequels. But that's (almost) every game I've made since 2002 in a convoluted timeline nutshell the likes of which rivals Zelda.

Further details (spoilers):

Legends of Destinies:
The important take-away here is in the character of Dyrm, the Astro Traveler. Although he lacked a backstory in the original game, the way he functions in the combination and destruction of various worlds could be perceived as a physical manifestation of the arguments held between the Goddesses and Chaos about the intended "essence" of the world that inspired the mortals to bloodshed and what would ultimately result in the Goddesses' separating themselves from the mortal world, eventually leading to the "Fall of the Holy City".

Mystic Dawn:
After the final death of Chaos, Corfaisus receives his redemption in the eyes of the Goddesses as his life fades away. As the dragon begins to fade, he looks out over the abyss and sees a great light overtaking the expanse as though it were the long sought-after "dawn" of the world's tainted "night". And though the world is "saved", it must succumb to the imbalance of the Light and the Dark and disappear from existence.

The projected twenty years of peace that occur during the final era is known as the "Mystic Dawn". The kingdom of Ternotris (to be called the "Realm of the Skydwellers") still hangs in the sky after having been separated from the earth during the age where much of the planet was consumed in a frenzied attempt by the abyss to repair the rift left behind by the fall of Chaos.

The final challenge during the age of man is the dragon known as "Dolosus" that is to bring about the "Remnants of the Fallen Sky", a catastrophe that speaks of the return of Ternotris to the surface world and its resulting destruction.
