Description

Last year you made new games of horror and suspense. This year we're doing something different. Break out your ouija boards, people, and get prepared to tackle some ghosts!

It's time to raise the dead...

This is an event that will focus on breathing new life in to old games, to taking from the past and remaking the future.

The idea of the competition is to take an old game and rework it back into being. It can be a cancelled project, a project idea that didn't work out or something you lost in the past for whatever reason. You can build off the base of the old project or start something new using the ideas that you had. Revive, rework, restore, remake... it's up to you. As long as something of the original project remains then it counts.

Each entry will gain two badges - one for participation and one for the area in which they worked.

Those areas are:=
Revival - Taking parts of a dead project and bringing it back. Parts can include resources, ideas, systems and the like. Note that it doesn't have to be built off the remains of a game, but should have something of the old game in it. You can, however, use the old game as base if you want to. Needs to be a complete game, though.

Rebirth - Taking the ideas that you once had in an old game and reusing them to build a new game instead. This game shouldn't be the old game - it should be new, but use ideas and such that are old. Needs to be a complete game, though.

Reanimate - Taking an old project and building off it in the intent to finish. You do not need to complete the game - a new build or demo with sufficient additions will grant you this badge.

Readying - Taking part and trying, even if all you end up with are words on a page. This will be granted to people who take part in the comment section when certain questions and mini-challenges are thrown there.

At the end of the event the four judges will pick their favourite game each and award a special prize. There will also be a prize for the Most Valuable Participator.

Judges for this event are Nessiah, Unity, Gourd and Liberty.

+ You must start reworking your dead projects/ideas on the 1st of October and have until the 30th to finish. All are due on the 30th of October, 12 Midnight, EST.

+ Games must have all files included that have been used. If you don't know how to set it so that no RTP is required, just ask.

+ The main focus of your game must come from an old idea, lost or cancelled game or series of ideas/games.

+ The game must be complete at the deadline to count for a badge and MS. If it is not complete, you can still gain a participation badge by participating in the discussions and feedback in the comment section of this event.

+ You may have more than one team, more than one game. Teams of up to ten are allowed.

+ You may use any engine you wish.

+ When you add your complete game, please me know which category it falls under.

Any questions and queries, ask in the comments below.

have you ever accidentally made a final fantasy game

Accidentally? No, but I did try my hand at remaking FF9 in 2k back in my earliest developmental days. I made it as far as getting a picture to use as the monster graphic for Necron and an extremely poorly put together test map for a chunk of Alexandria using RTP. It was bad.
LockeZ
I'd really like to get rid of LockeZ. His play style is way too unpredictable. He's always like this too. If he ran a country, he'd just kill and imprison people at random until crime stopped.

I probably should not have revived my boss design thread in the middle of this event.
I did start a game that took some steps from FF1: Start the game and pick a party and given the vague task of 'retrieve this stolen book' and throw the player into a world that they need to explore. There was even the high tech location late in the game but I don't remember the plot of why it's there without checking my notes.

It was my Ace Lite game, I found a workaround for the character / class limit and there was something crazy like sixteen possible character / classes you could use (no duplicates allowed). I'd just assign the details of the character that I could via event, use a locked armor as the class stats, and eventing to give them stats and skills on level up.

That sounds like a lot of fun! How far along did you get with it?

I totally want to make an FF1-like game just because the class system fascinates me.

So, Demon Legacy?

In terms of playable content? Not very! The framework was largely done in being able to pick your party and have it actually assemble, level up, and do all that right. The rough story and world was done, general progression was plotted out, and a few map / dungeon sketches. My biggest issue besides my atrocious work ethic was that I wanted to use SNES rips and edits in Ace. I wanted to use Romancing SaGa 3 assets and worked on converting them, along with a Treasures of the Rudra world map, but I've never been good with that stuff and I lost all steam there and the project fell to the wayside.

I remember a few things I wanted to try with it. There was no class capable of healing HP, instead the player would have a set collection of potions for free for the duration of a dungeon / per visit to town. One of the rewards the player could get from completing side dungeons was increasing the number of healing items they could hold.

With sixteen classes there's probably a fair bit of overlap. I did try to keep them somewhat distinct but without a live test to see how it felt I can't say if I was even close to succeeding. The general roles were Tank, Commander (influence what enemies targeted), Deeps (damage), Buffer, and Debuffer and classes were usually a mix of two. I also tried to add more variety to the roles. For example fire magic could inflict burns which gives a bonus to physical damage and ice magic causes frostbite which increases magic damage received. Or the General who could make any one ally less likely to be targeted or the Princess who could make herself significantly less likely to be targeted. It was small stuff due to lack of imagination Ace Lite and time restrictions.

Classes had a Weight attribute that was a cap on what they could equip, kinda. All equipment reduced Weight and if a character had zero Weight their attacks did zero damage. This was a Lite workaround, technically tanks could load up with zero weight and just throw healing items for example.

Dungeons had a set number of encounters per visit before encounters disappeared entirely but not clearing a dungeon of encounters gave the boss at the end reinforcements proportional to the number of encounters left.

There's maybe more but that's all I can remember.

You should; it's a classic. I mean, it hasn't aged well and the plotline is all over the place and a little hard to follow, but it's solid.

I've got what may be a dumb question: In RPG Maker 2000, aside from testing, when a player starts the game, it always starts full screened and can't be made to start in windowed mode, right? Or is there an option to make it start windowed that I've just missed all these years?

Eh, maybe. I find my tastes don't align much with the RM Classics. Barring exceptions like Hero's Realm and the peak crazy of Dhux's Scar at the ending switch that I enjoyed RM Classics like The Way or Romancing Walker usually make me feel apathetic or annoyed. But then I do need a break before I hang myself with VX and maybe Demon Legacy will appeal to my tastes more than others I tried.

Oh my god. I had forgotten that I'd used some hacking tool to replace the "ASCII" and "RPG Tsukuru" splash screens that show up when you start the exe file with custom ones that say "Pointsoft" and "Corporative Corporations, Inc.", which were apparently my fake company names in 2003.

I've also forgotten HOW to do that. Which is a shame since I should totally change those to my new updated fake company names!!! I don't seem to have the software I used for it any more (which is actually surprising). Time to hunt down a new hacking tool to do... whatever what I did is called.

Edit: Fuck yeah, got it in one. The logos are stored as XYZ files, which I can create by importing a .png file into an RM2K game as a resource with the "xyz file" option checked. Then with this Resource Hacker software I can hack that .xyz file into the application as a resource, to replace the original logos.

i have to make a deliberate effort not to make final fantasy games
I would like to join this event, but the only completed RPG Maker game that I ever finished making (at age 5) is forever gone. I don't remember it even that much, so I've got nothing...

On the other hand, my first RPG was a piece of shit!

EDIT:
I think that first RPG may have demoralized my ability to stick with an idea and finish a game. ...Welp! There's always next year... <:(
You can use the ideas from it (and the game doesn't have to be completed - you can draw from an old demo or something you'd planned on making in the past).

Thanks! I was more asking if there was a way to make my game do that automatically, but I can put that in a readme file so players know how to do it ^_^
I’m more regressing than I am progressing.

At this point, I’ve pretty much gone back to working on plan B again. >_<

What is this "progress" that you speak of?

More seriously, all I have right now are a few maps, and a general plot sequence to follow.

Our progress is about infinity times more than last week!

Things are going really well actually! On my end, the VXA scripting and database balancing is coming together pretty quickly :D

I'm juggling Feral Solidarity with Mystic Dawn. On one hand, I need the money; on the other, this event.

On the plus side, the labyrinth is getting a brand new mindfuck.
