Description

Halloween approaches and it's that time of year when we remember the dead and dying. This year, instead of the typical horror-fest, we're going to be doing something about the corpses mouldering in our backyards.

That is, those games we never got around to finishing but always said "One day..." about. It's time to grab a shovel, dig up a dead one and lay it on the slab. Let's Frankenstein this thing!

Aim
The aim of this event is to take an old game that hasn't been touched in a while and bring it back to life with the intention of finishing it by the end of the month.

Event Rules
- Pick a game that's been out of commission for a while. I'm not going to be picky about how long they've been dead, as long as you haven't been actively working on it in for a while, it'll count.
- Work on it with the intent to finish before the due date (3rd December).
- Post progress updates at least once a week until the end date. I'll talk about that a bit more below.
- Finish the game by the due date and submit it to this page.

Rewards
If you do not finish your game in time, you'll get a participation badge for taking part in the event. This will be a low MS reward, but there will be supplemented rewards for taking part. This badge requires that at least one progress update badge to unlock.

If you actually complete the game and submit it to the site by the due date, you'll also get a badge. This badge requires at least two progress update badges to unlock.

Each of the four progress updates will net you a different badge and these will give you a tidy amount of MS too, so if you're not sure that you'll be able to finish your game in time, aim to take part in them!

Progress Updates
Over the course of the month (roughly once a week) you'll be asked for an update on your progress. Each time you'll be asked for something different - whether it be screenshots of current work, details of changed/finished components or other information.

To earn either of the main badges you must take part in some of these (not all of them, but it's encouraged that you do take part). You will be encouraged to give feedback to each other and post WIP pieces as well as finished stuff, so that everyone can keep abreast of how each other is doing. We're a community of developers, after all, even if it's just a hobby for some, so interacting and helping each other grow and encouraging each other is definitely something to aim for!

There will also, over the month, be a room on the RMN discord for people to talk about this event in particular and how they're going with their games for it. I encourage everyone taking part to join up and mingle.

First Update: Choose the game you are going to use and make a list of things that need changing/fixing/doing.

Second Update: Show off new vs old images and tell us a bit about your game.

Third Update: Fill in the survey below.
What have you accomplished on your project thus far?

What unexpected challenges have you run into in reviving your game?

How far through making the game would you say you are, currently?

Now that you've actually started working on the game, do you think you'll finish in time?

Can you see any big challenges that you might have to deal with in order to complete the game?

Is there anything in particular that you'd need help with in order to get past these challenges?

Would you be willing to ask others to help you with these possible issues?

Fourth Update: Make a game page, show off a screenshot of something new (gameplay-wise) and tell us how the gammak goes.

Fifth Update: Make a blog post detailing what you've done since the start of this event to where you are now in the game.

SIXTH PROGRESS UPDATE: BEGIN

Add your game download to the site and have it tagged for testers. Then get someone to do a test of what you have. Post their notes here, then put up your game for reaslies and add it to this page before the 3rd

FAQs
Do we need to make a gamepage?
If you already have an existing gamepage you don't need to make another. However, if your game is not already on the site, then you will have to make a gamepage for it as it is a requirement for submitting the games this time.

I will be checking the queue fairly often over the course of the event, especially towards the end, so the sooner you get your gamepages in, the better. If you need help getting your gamepage accepted, just PM me (Liberty) and I can help you out a bit, but usually I'll be giving you the same information as I give in the notes when a gamepage is denied so make sure to check those first! Also, the information in this thread is very useful: https://rpgmaker.net/forums/topics/5673/

How do I submit?
You must have a gamepage that has been accepted to the site and upload a version of your game there first. Then make sure you've signed up to this event. After that, hit the Submit button in the top-right corner of this page and pick your game from the list.

Is there a limit on the age of the game?
Nope. All that matters is that you haven't touched it in a while.

Can I just remake one of my old games that didn't get finished?
Yes, actually. All that matters is that the game in question exists before this event and hasn't been touched in a while. How you bring it back to life is up to you. Whether that means remaking it from the ground up or taking a half-finished game and scaling it down to fit within the month is up to you.

What about a game that's complete but needs some bug fixes and/or edits? Will that count?
I'm afraid not. It's really not in the spirit of the event - that is, taking something that isn't complete and bringing it back from that shallow (or deep) grave in order to spring back to complete 'health' again.

Can I just make a new game instead?
Again, not really in the spirit of the event, so no. Sorry, maybe next time.

Teams? Multiple entries?
If you want to team up with someone to help revive your game, that's definitely a-okay. Aside from that, there are some games out there that started with groups and just died. If those people want to get back together and try to finish the game, that's all well and dandy too. And sometimes an artist might be helping one team and have their own game as well. That's why I've allowed both teaming and multiple entries.

Oh, hey, Liberty, the Event Rules section still says "complete by the 31st". I mean, yeah, I don't think anyone's actually reading that section anymore, but, yanno...

I believe it says this update is due by the 31st. Referring to the questionnaire that is Progress Update #3, and not the games associated with the event. For the end-date of the event, please refer to your friendly neighborhood Details section!
Nah, it used to say "complete the game by the 31st", but now the date correct. Looking at my Notices, it seems Libby must've corrected it shortly before your post lol
to answer the question "Deader or Alive" judging by my lack of any progress, I am going to go with "Deader"
It actually said by Halloween, but yeah, I changed it to the proper date.

You still have about a month, kentona!
i hope this isnt too laaate but it says the update ends on the 31st so i think im good
What have you accomplished on your project thus far?
removed all RTP assets
added new mechanics (like chopping down trees)
redid all maps and characters

What unexpected challenges have you run into in reviving your game?
we have a lot more work than we expected.

How far through making the game would you say you are, currently?
not too far, we don't have much to show in terms of the island.

Now that you've actually started working on the game, do you think you'll finish in time?
probably not...

Can you see any big challenges that you might have to deal with in order to complete the game?
being able to finish the game, because there's a lot more to do than we first thought. we'll probably need to trim down the game a bit.

Is there anything in particular that you'd need help with in order to get past these challenges?
the farming aspect will probably be a bit difficult.

Would you be willing to ask others to help you with these possible issues?
probably yes.
Progress Update #3 for Final Fantasy:Sky Warriors!

What have you accomplished on your project thus far?
I have completed the Earth Cave, World Map, and begun on what I have deemed Surprise #1!

What unexpected challenges have you run into in reviving your game?
Actually I had some bugs involving the ship to land transition events, namely with the canoe - but I've squished these bugs and they are now working as intended.

How far through making the game would you say you are, currently?
Taking into account most of the graphics are already incorporated and the scripting is set in stone, I would say I am roughly 50-60% completed with the game at this point.

Now that you've actually started working on the game, do you think you'll finish in time?
It's hard to say. I've got a lot of other things going on right now and it's hard to find inspiration to sit down and map things out to the degree I want the game to have as far as the game I'm basing it around's similarity.

Can you see any big challenges that you might have to deal with in order to complete the game?
The mapping, really. I also want to make sure to give a lot of the NPC's changing dialogue so they don't feel like lifeless filler in the towns.

Is there anything in particular that you'd need help with in order to get past these challenges?
Nothing that Ocean isn't covering, really. If someone could rip more Wonderswan handheld soundtracks and put them on youtube, that would be fantastic :3

Would you be willing to ask others to help you with these possible issues?
I don't think other than getting my hands on ample amounts of fitting music and what Ocean is doing for me as far as graphics are concerned, that anything I'm doing would be expedited by outside help, but I dunno! Maybe!
Most of the wonderswan library's music has been dumped and is available on Zophar's Domain including a link for a winamp plugin to play them. It isn't youtube but once set up it's easy to download and just play piles of them.

Oooh. I never thought of checking Zophars. Thanks! Check++
Today's fun: Since I changed a bunch of EXP and gold values from enemies (although mostly for the endgame because it was being really stingy) and fixed a boss animation death bug (battle would end while the animation was still going) I started another testing playthrough and this time I noticed yet another horrible bug! ... An enemy AI was busted where it wouldn't perform the simple pattern of Guard->Use Bazap Wave->Repeat but only after 4 turns. I found a hackfix (e: it was related to an aggro script I'm using /e: ) but now I'm not sure what else might randomly fail!

let me share my feeling on this subject
Well, at least you didn't do what I did and pass the wrong data type to an object-spawning function. Apparently that causes random small blotches of red pixels to get drawn to the screen instead, in addition to function code suddenly malfunctioning, objects deleting themselves, the background tiles shifting, and basically just almost becoming a creepypasta until crashing a second-ish later, with the error-reporting system having no clue what happened. Very suiting for this event.

also I'm thinking about adding something like Bangai-O's missile countering system someone stop me

What have you accomplished on your project thus far?

Not much since my computer was broke.

What unexpected challenges have you run into in reviving your game?

My computer.

How far through making the game would you say you are, currently?

2%

Now that you've actually started working on the game, do you think you'll finish in time?

Maybe or maybe not.

Can you see any big challenges that you might have to deal with in order to complete the game?

Puzzles ideas.

Is there anything in particular that you'd need help with in order to get past these challenges?

Not really. Maybe puzzles ideas.

Would you be willing to ask others to help you with these possible issues?

No.
What have you accomplished on your project thus far?
I made the game able to play maps larger than the screen size and fixed all bugs caused by this massive change. I also refactored the code to fix the bugs and maked it easier to understand. This will also help when adding new features. I completely changed the map editor to improve usability.
The old version is here. The new one here. Map18 is currently the only map that is larger than the screen.

What unexpected challenges have you run into in reviving your game?
"Code you haven't worked on for 6 months could have been written by someone else." Comments in the code described operations at function level and some key components but I needed to rediscover the logic of low level code to change it without breaking its functionality. The program architecture was designed for a fix screen with on-change rendering as this was the best way to mitigate the dizzying effect of the ASCII terminal display of the first version of the game.

How far through making the game would you say you are, currently?
Game engine: 70% completed
Game campaign/story: 1% completed. I have a general storyline but that's about it.

Now that you've actually started working on the game, do you think you'll finish in time?
It depends. I really like to create interesting game-play features and creating all the ones I think would probably eat up all the remaining development time, leaving none for the campaign. So if I manage to cut down features, YES. Otherwise NO.

Can you see any big challenges that you might have to deal with in order to complete the game?
I want to make the walls beneficial to the defender, and not to the attacker. This implies creating new passabilty types and rework the pathfinding algorithm. I also want to develop different AI behaviors. Currently, all enemy units hunt the player units. Pathfinding and AI are two big interconnected systems so it will be quite a challenge.

Is there anything in particular that you'd need help with in order to get past these challenges?
AI is quite difficult to build right. It requires a lot of play-testing to make sure it creates interesting strategic options for the player. Ideally, a recoding of all successive moves would tell where the AI failed.

Would you be willing to ask others to help you with these possible issues?
Yes definitely!
dragon: rawr I use confusion attack

*Luan is now confused*

me: uh oh I better heal that

*uses item, Luan loses confusion and gains 3 turns of confusion immunity*

dragon: wow that was cool I'm gonna do it again

*popup for Luan getting confused appears, Luan does not get confused*

e: right, states in VX have "States to Cancel" but not resist. So if State A has "To Cancel" State B, and Actor A has State A on them they still don't resist State B so there's a chance State B can be applied to Actor A. However since State A can cancel State B it is immediately negated and jesus fuck why am I still using VX

e2: A while back I added hitting an enemy with an element reveals their elemental resistance in the scan window. I totally forgot to do the same with states and added that too.
What have you accomplished on your project thus far?
I have completed adding a few new maps and fixing a few buildings for the game.

What unexpected challenges have you run into in reviving your game?
Being consistent with making the game and deciding on how the maps will work, and the broken script I keep having to fix.

How far through making the game would you say you are, currently?
I would say about 45% finished.

Now that you've actually started working on the game, do you think you'll finish in time?
If everything goes smoothly and I stay consistent, then I say yes, it could get done in time.

Can you see any big challenges that you might have to deal with in order to complete the game?
Time is a major problem because I'm always so busy, so its difficult to work when I'm tired, and also I have to think carefully about how the maps and characters will work in the game.

Is there anything in particular that you'd need help with in order to get past these challenges?
AI chase scenes (Although I haven't worked on that yet, I will probably get to it soon) and puzzles (Because I make them too simple).

Would you be willing to ask others to help you with these possible issues?
No, because with the time I have to work everyday, I don't want others to have to wait to see results. Although it would be nice and helpful, my schedule says no.
I anyone needs a tester for RPG Maker games (2000 - MV), I have time for it.
RPG Maker 2003 games must have the RTP included or it won't work for me (sorry).
But the game should not rely too much on fast reaction.
PROGRESS UPDATE #4
= Make a gamepage if you haven't already.
= Show off a screenshot of something new, gameplay-wise.
= How goes the gammak?

Progress update due by 10th November.
Gamepage : I've had one for awhile now.

Screenshot : The revised final battle for Chapter 1, featuring a Fortress for the bad guys.

How Dost It Go : It goeth. I've been busy with job and IRL woes recently, but thanks to scheduling, I have eight days off straight coming up. I intend to utilize them to maximum effect.
Any reason i post not count?
I want to posted a page on the the site but my my game not ready for play because theres some bugs still left over. BUT I'll try to get a page up this update even if I don't go the bugs.
= Make a gamepage if you haven't already. >> https://rpgmaker.net/games/10112/

Old RTP Tileset, because I challenged myself to not use any custom graph, unlike my previous games.

Hrm, I'll be surprised if I actually have enough of a stage going by then to be able to meet the 3-Screenshots criteria. On the off chance I do, I guess I'll ask ahead of time: can you change the title of a game, even after it being submitted and accepted? I've never touched the game page part of the site so I don't know what to expect with it.
Yes you can change the title of your game via "Manage Games". Click the name of your game to reach the "Game Profile" page and modify the field "Name".
