Description

Halloween approaches and it's that time of year when we remember the dead and dying. This year, instead of the typical horror-fest, we're going to be doing something about the corpses mouldering in our backyards.

That is, those games we never got around to finishing but always said "One day..." about. It's time to grab a shovel, dig up a dead one and lay it on the slab. Let's Frankenstein this thing!

Aim
The aim of this event is to take an old game that hasn't been touched in a while and bring it back to life with the intention of finishing it by the end of the month.

Event Rules
- Pick a game that's been out of commission for a while. I'm not going to be picky about how long they've been dead, as long as you haven't been actively working on it in for a while, it'll count.
- Work on it with the intent to finish before the due date (3rd December).
- Post progress updates at least once a week until the end date. I'll talk about that a bit more below.
- Finish the game by the due date and submit it to this page.

Rewards
If you do not finish your game in time, you'll get a participation badge for taking part in the event. This will be a low MS reward, but there will be supplemented rewards for taking part. This badge requires that at least one progress update badge to unlock.

If you actually complete the game and submit it to the site by the due date, you'll also get a badge. This badge requires at least two progress update badges to unlock.

Each of the four progress updates will net you a different badge and these will give you a tidy amount of MS too, so if you're not sure that you'll be able to finish your game in time, aim to take part in them!

Progress Updates
Over the course of the month (roughly once a week) you'll be asked for an update on your progress. Each time you'll be asked for something different - whether it be screenshots of current work, details of changed/finished components or other information.

To earn either of the main badges you must take part in some of these (not all of them, but it's encouraged that you do take part). You will be encouraged to give feedback to each other and post WIP pieces as well as finished stuff, so that everyone can keep abreast of how each other is doing. We're a community of developers, after all, even if it's just a hobby for some, so interacting and helping each other grow and encouraging each other is definitely something to aim for!

There will also, over the month, be a room on the RMN discord for people to talk about this event in particular and how they're going with their games for it. I encourage everyone taking part to join up and mingle.

First Update: Choose the game you are going to use and make a list of things that need changing/fixing/doing.

Second Update: Show off new vs old images and tell us a bit about your game.

Third Update: Fill in the survey below.
What have you accomplished on your project thus far?

What unexpected challenges have you run into in reviving your game?

How far through making the game would you say you are, currently?

Now that you've actually started working on the game, do you think you'll finish in time?

Can you see any big challenges that you might have to deal with in order to complete the game?

Is there anything in particular that you'd need help with in order to get past these challenges?

Would you be willing to ask others to help you with these possible issues?

Fourth Update: Make a game page, show off a screenshot of something new (gameplay-wise) and tell us how the gammak goes.

Fifth Update: Make a blog post detailing what you've done since the start of this event to where you are now in the game.

SIXTH PROGRESS UPDATE: BEGIN

Add your game download to the site and have it tagged for testers. Then get someone to do a test of what you have. Post their notes here, then put up your game for reaslies and add it to this page before the 3rd

FAQs
Do we need to make a gamepage?
If you already have an existing gamepage you don't need to make another. However, if your game is not already on the site, then you will have to make a gamepage for it as it is a requirement for submitting the games this time.

I will be checking the queue fairly often over the course of the event, especially towards the end, so the sooner you get your gamepages in, the better. If you need help getting your gamepage accepted, just PM me (Liberty) and I can help you out a bit, but usually I'll be giving you the same information as I give in the notes when a gamepage is denied so make sure to check those first! Also, the information in this thread is very useful: https://rpgmaker.net/forums/topics/5673/

How do I submit?
You must have a gamepage that has been accepted to the site and upload a version of your game there first. Then make sure you've signed up to this event. After that, hit the Submit button in the top-right corner of this page and pick your game from the list.

Is there a limit on the age of the game?
Nope. All that matters is that you haven't touched it in a while.

Can I just remake one of my old games that didn't get finished?
Yes, actually. All that matters is that the game in question exists before this event and hasn't been touched in a while. How you bring it back to life is up to you. Whether that means remaking it from the ground up or taking a half-finished game and scaling it down to fit within the month is up to you.

What about a game that's complete but needs some bug fixes and/or edits? Will that count?
I'm afraid not. It's really not in the spirit of the event - that is, taking something that isn't complete and bringing it back from that shallow (or deep) grave in order to spring back to complete 'health' again.

Can I just make a new game instead?
Again, not really in the spirit of the event, so no. Sorry, maybe next time.

Teams? Multiple entries?
If you want to team up with someone to help revive your game, that's definitely a-okay. Aside from that, there are some games out there that started with groups and just died. If those people want to get back together and try to finish the game, that's all well and dandy too. And sometimes an artist might be helping one team and have their own game as well. That's why I've allowed both teaming and multiple entries.

I finally started on my game, I have to fix:
-Spelling errors
-Gameplay mechanics
-Story

I have already fixed:
Dialogue
Broken scripts

I also wanted to revive another game (Just for fun) which was last years project I submitted, Three Ghost Stories: https://rpgmaker.net/games/9334/.
Since we have a new due date, there may be some time for me to finish these two together. Good luck to everyone!

Spent all day replacing placeholder ripped tiles with original tiles instead of making new content. This is probably not the best way to get the game done by the end of the month. Or even to get the game to a point where I can show off visible progress.

But hey! Not so visible progress!

Old tileset:

New, suspiciously similar tileset:

Still need to redo the conveyor belts and one or two little things, then I'll have legal rights to actually use all the graphics in... this particular map.

The massive number of rips in this game and my inability to sell the finished product when I'm done was definitely a major contributing factor to my losing motivation to work on this game. The gameplay was so good; it deserved to be a real game and not just a shitty collection of Tales of Phantasia rips.

I remember playing that, do you need help?
Progress update:

MinST scrollable map works: scrolling runs ok and AI works on large maps but I now need to adapt the map editor.

I'm breaking out of my comfort zone and finishing a comedy puzzle RPG idea I sketched but abandoned on the basis that I have no idea what I'm doing when it comes to comedy. I've learned my lessons from the last event game I did and dialed back the lengthy intro and wait to do custom assets until I have a functioning game. There are a lot of branches and alternate scenarios for each encounter, so staying on top of them all is going to be brutal.
Now that I have the gamepage for Jello and the Valley of Duh approved, it should be a good time to start laying down some things to be done:

-assembling Miraga Pyramid-

-make an arrow trap

-create a mirror-based puzzle which may involve hitting buttons only seen on the other side of the mirror
-get the eventing working for a mirrordouble
-add some arrow traps that can only be seen on the other side of the mirror
-add in a couple new enemies here and there.
-Perhaps the entire alphabet of unoun? (all the same stats, just 26 variations to fight)
-maybe seviper? (I had drawn a seviper called Sevira a while back, to go with the fact that there's a Zangoose bandit gang in the desert town. I'm thinking she would be a protector of the pyramid and wishes to test them)
-after some puzzles, the party splits up and story stuff will happen. After that a couple more rooms of actual gameplay.
-boss battle vs regigigas
-will need to consult the pokedex for moves and stats
-will also need to make the regi slow for 5 turns
-a ton of story stuff after this, should be relatively straightforward
-need to make a handful of sprites for a bunch of legendary pokemon
-need to go over locations that will be revisited in chapter 8 for return visit stability
-decide a bunch of story stuff that will happen after the legends are gathered -
-make sure the events fall in line with the main messages of the story. (importance of friendship, breaking down barriers of fear, accepting who you are, etc)
-do an overhaul of the battle difficulty (the battles are waaaaay too easy currently)

I'm not sure how much of this I'll be able to do, but at least I have a solid list. (I have a more thorough version of this list with heavy plot spoilers, so you guys need not worry about the vagueness of my direction.)
LockeZ
I'd really like to get rid of LockeZ. His play style is way too unpredictable. He's always like this too. If he ran a country, he'd just kill and imprison people at random until crime stopped.

Like I said, it was just a prototype and not an actual game. It didn't get abandoned due to neglect, but rather because it was just meant to test out systems and wasn't intended to go any further at the time. Since remaking the game from the ground up was an option in the event description, I thought this was the chance to make an actual game out of it.

I'm still waiting on an official yay or nay if that alone was enough to qualify for this event. If Liberty says it's not, then great. I'd like to know for certain, though.
I mean, there's something there that you did, right? Like actual content of a kind? Then I think it counts.

Dragon Bride

- Fix the graphical issues that plague the current version.
- Add/edit more graphics.
- Copy over the database information (how the hell can I do this in VX without fucking over the graphics, I don't know, especially since VX doesn't allow multiple projects to be opened which I need it to) :\
- Finish planning the main story.
- Finish eventing the story parts.
- Test.

So this game was one I thought destroyed by some weird graphical glitch that caused all the maps to just fuck themselves. It doesn't help that when I made it I didn't keep a back-up, nor that I shared it anywhere, NOR that I kept a copy of the graphics I used for it. I haven't had access to VX for a while now, but I recently got another copy so I can now mess around with it. Problem is, I have one copy with all the databasing but messed up graphics, and one copy with only the maps and messed up database. If VX could keep two instances open in the dumb program I'd be able to just copy/paste information but apparently it's the worst program ever fucking made because fuck me I guess.

...I wanna finish this game though, so I'm gonna give it a shot.

VX Ace can run multiple instances no problem. It's only Steam that stops you. Just go into the program folder and double-click on the .exe file, instead of loading the program from inside Steam.

On most computers the folder is C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\RPGVXAce
VX, not Ace. VX won't allow it and that's, unfortunately, what the game is made in. Trying to port it to Ace is part of the reason it died in the first place.

Liberty: In that case just open one project, copy, close, open the other project, paste.
I'm a little late to the party, but considering Phantasia 2 Redux is on hiatus, I guess that gives the right flags for me to participate. And try to get this thing finished...

Let's hope so... let's bloody hope so...

Can't you just copy the working data folder to the project with the maps?

That works too. Just not the entire data folder, because the maps are in there.
That... is actually what initially caused the images to break (I don't know how). I managed to copy the maps over to a new project but once I copy the database files over, that causes it to die. I've tried changing the graphics after that but it just ends up with empty A tiles.

So one day it turned into this:

Then I moved the maps to a new project and that was fine. Copied over the database data and it turned back into the above. Replaced the RTP tiles and it became this:

The maps by themselves with no database data added, in a new project, look like they're supposed to (bar some missing edits which I'll have to redo):

That said, for some reason I can now open two versions of VX, when yesterday it was absolutely against doing so, so hopefully this will speed the database recovery along.
SECOND PROGRESS UPDATE
Write a small summary of what your game is about and share an old and new engine-based image (that can include database, event, map or the like).

The next progress update will occur on the 20th.
Fire RMNblem is a tactical RPG; something of an anomaly on this site.
It uses Fire Emblem Gaiden ripped graphics and sound, and tries to emulate it's gameplay to the best of Sim RPGMaker 95's abilities. It's goal is to be a humorous little self-aware jaunt through a bunch of reasonably challenging battles, peppered with silly jokes having some basis in RPGMaker.net, hence the title.

It began as a tiny little thing earlier this year, created for the 10th Birthday of RMN event and had been abandoned until now. Working under the two month timeline, I hope to flesh it out into something more game'y than the currently available download and make it enjoyable not just for fellow RMNers, but TRPG aficiondos in general.

Here's a quick screencap of what's going on. The upper image is the old single screen map, and the lower image is the newer expanded-upon version where I'm incorporating side quests for extra loot and recruitables.
I've done substantially more work database-wise, but that's hard to show here. I'm just trying to have everything planned and ready to go before I start actually pouring the concrete, so to speak.
