Description

Halloween approaches and it's that time of year when we remember the dead and dying. This year, instead of the typical horror-fest, we're going to be doing something about the corpses mouldering in our backyards.

That is, those games we never got around to finishing but always said "One day..." about. It's time to grab a shovel, dig up a dead one and lay it on the slab. Let's Frankenstein this thing!

Aim
The aim of this event is to take an old game that hasn't been touched in a while and bring it back to life with the intention of finishing it by the end of the month.

Event Rules
- Pick a game that's been out of commission for a while. I'm not going to be picky about how long they've been dead, as long as you haven't been actively working on it in for a while, it'll count.
- Work on it with the intent to finish before the due date (3rd December).
- Post progress updates at least once a week until the end date. I'll talk about that a bit more below.
- Finish the game by the due date and submit it to this page.

Rewards
If you do not finish your game in time, you'll get a participation badge for taking part in the event. This will be a low MS reward, but there will be supplemented rewards for taking part. This badge requires that at least one progress update badge to unlock.

If you actually complete the game and submit it to the site by the due date, you'll also get a badge. This badge requires at least two progress update badges to unlock.

Each of the four progress updates will net you a different badge and these will give you a tidy amount of MS too, so if you're not sure that you'll be able to finish your game in time, aim to take part in them!

Progress Updates
Over the course of the month (roughly once a week) you'll be asked for an update on your progress. Each time you'll be asked for something different - whether it be screenshots of current work, details of changed/finished components or other information.

To earn either of the main badges you must take part in some of these (not all of them, but it's encouraged that you do take part). You will be encouraged to give feedback to each other and post WIP pieces as well as finished stuff, so that everyone can keep abreast of how each other is doing. We're a community of developers, after all, even if it's just a hobby for some, so interacting and helping each other grow and encouraging each other is definitely something to aim for!

There will also, over the month, be a room on the RMN discord for people to talk about this event in particular and how they're going with their games for it. I encourage everyone taking part to join up and mingle.

First Update: Choose the game you are going to use and make a list of things that need changing/fixing/doing.

Second Update: Show off new vs old images and tell us a bit about your game.

Third Update: Fill in the survey below.
What have you accomplished on your project thus far?

What unexpected challenges have you run into in reviving your game?

How far through making the game would you say you are, currently?

Now that you've actually started working on the game, do you think you'll finish in time?

Can you see any big challenges that you might have to deal with in order to complete the game?

Is there anything in particular that you'd need help with in order to get past these challenges?

Would you be willing to ask others to help you with these possible issues?

Fourth Update: Make a game page, show off a screenshot of something new (gameplay-wise) and tell us how the gammak goes.

Fifth Update: Make a blog post detailing what you've done since the start of this event to where you are now in the game.

SIXTH PROGRESS UPDATE: BEGIN

Add your game download to the site and have it tagged for testers. Then get someone to do a test of what you have. Post their notes here, then put up your game for reaslies and add it to this page before the 3rd

FAQs
Do we need to make a gamepage?
If you already have an existing gamepage you don't need to make another. However, if your game is not already on the site, then you will have to make a gamepage for it as it is a requirement for submitting the games this time.

I will be checking the queue fairly often over the course of the event, especially towards the end, so the sooner you get your gamepages in, the better. If you need help getting your gamepage accepted, just PM me (Liberty) and I can help you out a bit, but usually I'll be giving you the same information as I give in the notes when a gamepage is denied so make sure to check those first! Also, the information in this thread is very useful: https://rpgmaker.net/forums/topics/5673/

How do I submit?
You must have a gamepage that has been accepted to the site and upload a version of your game there first. Then make sure you've signed up to this event. After that, hit the Submit button in the top-right corner of this page and pick your game from the list.

Is there a limit on the age of the game?
Nope. All that matters is that you haven't touched it in a while.

Can I just remake one of my old games that didn't get finished?
Yes, actually. All that matters is that the game in question exists before this event and hasn't been touched in a while. How you bring it back to life is up to you. Whether that means remaking it from the ground up or taking a half-finished game and scaling it down to fit within the month is up to you.

What about a game that's complete but needs some bug fixes and/or edits? Will that count?
I'm afraid not. It's really not in the spirit of the event - that is, taking something that isn't complete and bringing it back from that shallow (or deep) grave in order to spring back to complete 'health' again.

Can I just make a new game instead?
Again, not really in the spirit of the event, so no. Sorry, maybe next time.

Teams? Multiple entries?
If you want to team up with someone to help revive your game, that's definitely a-okay. Aside from that, there are some games out there that started with groups and just died. If those people want to get back together and try to finish the game, that's all well and dandy too. And sometimes an artist might be helping one team and have their own game as well. That's why I've allowed both teaming and multiple entries.

Something with at least a bit of progress would probably be best, since that would reduce some of the workload for you (and don't worry, I'm in the same boat, with about 50 games that have one map or only a cast or general story idea. XD )
Glad it's not just me lol

But, looking over my massive graveyard, there is one that stands out. It's got a mostly-complete document and seems reasonably sized to get done in a month.

I suppose "do the practice project you were going to do back in 2013 but then didn't" isn't quite as in the spirit of the event as the other people here bringing up their abandoned, half-finished projects, but if Libby's saying it's within the rules I might just do it.

I shall be reviving "Monstrum" a game about 3 monsters having adventures.

What I need to do:
-Create the four "dungeons"
-Create enemies!
-Create the quests!
-Create!
-Create more!
-and more.
Fire RMNblem Gaiden

"Finish it" isn't really a list, so...

-Add more characters
-Add more levels
-Add more items and spells
-Add a currency and stores
-Have some fun

"Return target game from oblivion to the game page."

LockeZ
I'd really like to get rid of LockeZ. His play style is way too unpredictable. He's always like this too. If he ran a country, he'd just kill and imprison people at random until crime stopped.

OK, I'm working on reviving Iniquity & Vindication. A game that I'll probably rename when I'm getting closer to releasing it, but I would feel like an idiot renaming it just because I plan to start working on it again. At this point I've worked on it maybe a grand total of three weeks over the past two years.

Here's my to-do list then:

Graphics
Replace all SNES-ripped and PSX-ripped tiles with original graphics
Build new tilesets as needed for new dungeons
Create sprites for additional characters and enemies.
Create new poses as needed for existing main character sprites
Assemble spell animations in the database out of the graphic sheets I have

Content
Finish the dungeon I was working on last year that's 50% done
Create at least seven or eight more dungeons
Design enemies and bosses for all of those places
Create all the cut scenes that happen in those dungeons and that connect them together
Design the abilities for the two playable characters I don't have done yet

Audio
Find and download free sound effects for battle animations as needed

Scripting
Fix graphical glitches in health bars caused by MKXP
Code a way to show more than five status effects in battle
Write a script to show skill chain points instead of MP for the chainsaw-using character
Write new scripts as needed for whatever weird stuff I want future bosses to do
Create menus for equipping skills and spending points in talent trees
Create multiple difficulty settings (maybe)

Testing
Test the game
Test the game some more
Keep testing the game
Test the game on Mac (maybe)
Test the game on Linux (maybe???)

Release
Get the greenlight from Steam
Email like two hundred Youtubers to get them to LP the game
Figure out how marketing works

I think this is more than a month of work guys. Oh well. It's not like I'm gonna let the game die again at the end of the month if it's not done yet. Hopefully. Theoretically?
Holy crap LockeZ...thats like a month of worth for a whole team of gammakers. Thus it might go slightly faster if you got some help, but since you already kinda know what you want it might be a bother catching them up to speed.

Yeah. "Create at least seven or eight more dungeons" and "Figure out how marketing works" are both easily two months of work each, by themselves. Never mind all the other bullet points.

If anybody wants to help, let me know. I don't mind catching people up, and I actually have a lot of experience running game development teams, but I do mind people doing three days of work and then quitting on me. Just keep in mind that we will clearly not be getting the completion badge from this event, heh.

there's a typo in the event name!!

I just don't believe it! Site maintainence has gone down the pan lately!

As for my first update:

##NOT A CHANCE OF A GHOST##
TO DO:
- Create new title art (done)
- Spruce up gamepage
- Create new background art for first cutscene (30%-ish done)
- Create new character art
- Create new sprites and tiles
- Work on base code for stealth system

Welp, I'm sitting here finishing off the doc, so hey, let's do it 4 realz

Project: Never really had an official name. The document is just titled "Fruit Drop" but I'll have to think of something else b/c that sounds like a Match-3 game, which this is not.

To Do: Make the game lol. I could just copy-paste the todo section from the doc, but... to keep it brief:
o All assets (graphics, music, sfx) need to be made.
o I have a basic movement control prototype and that's it, so everything else - game structure, enemy behavior, scoring, etc etc needs to be done.

If this weren't going to be an 80s-styled arcade game, that's be a fuck-ton to do, but I actually feel optimistic about completing this. Hell, I might have time to do more than what I have outlined already.

e: to make a 1-week goal, I should be able to get the graphics done in a week.
author=Marrend
It probably helps to be able to point to an already-available gamepage, and say "I'm reviving this", but I don't think it's an absolute necessity. A game that isn't on RMN (or elsewhere on the 'net) would probably be using the honor system (ie: we're trusting you that it's a dead project).

It says right there in that quote-block that Liberty isn't going to be picky about it. I kinda think that the project has to be sat on for at least a fortnight (ie: two weeks), but, I'm certainly not any kind of judge/arbiter in this matter.

Nope!

author=Liberty
It can be a game you never posted or shared before. God knows, we all have those games we didn't finish and were kinda ashamed to share or just didn't think anyone would like.

As for how long it's been out of commission... I'm gonna say at least a month. Like I said, I'm not gonna be picky about it - if you say you haven't worked on it for 2 years, I won't be super sleuthing it to see if you're lying or not. I'm gonna trust you guys to say "Oh, yeah, this one I worked on last week so that doesn't count, but this one I haven't touched in a few months, so I'll do that one!"

It can be horror or Halloween related, but it's not a requirement.

Yeeeeeeyyy! Thanks for your trust! :)
That's sooooo cool! I have TONS of unfinished RPGs on my laptop, which are very, VERY old, but still have quite a pretty plot... Now what I have to do is to only choose one of them!
Btw thanks for answering! >u<
There's no typo. It's supposed to be Revive the Dead 2: Deader or Alive
:\

It's a joke since I didn't want to steal 'dead or alive' straight up and wanted to convey dead being more than the alive part. I know how to spell, thank you very much! :<
Super Mario Paint X

Change:
Rework the opening tutorial, it's too wordy and confusing.
Replace or rework the existing level.

Add:
More maps and enemies.
Draw stuff in a ROM of Mario Paint, and put it in the game.
String along the story I wrote for this.

It's SMBX so there isn't much beyond that.

Is my being here counting as 'revival'?

Literally anything of mine counts (and nothing will be finished by Oct. 31st) but I'm actually messing with ReCrisis. The game I submitted...for the 2014 Revive the Dead...yay...

Anyway actual list. My goal is to have a complete first episode.

Remake/rewrite cutscenes, new maps, event from start to finish
New Intro
New Tiles for inner train
Better Fog Display
More dynamic use of event proximity SEs (fans in starting area, water sources)
Add dumb easter egg

Animation for Item/Dead/Injured
Boss enemy sprites
Also add dumb easter egg

Change non-sensical magic to 'items' (skills with item costs) (Bolt to Shock Grenade, etc.)
Lessen Item Drop Rates
Add Accessories
Balancing, Balancing, Balancing

Copy Synth system from REE to REC and create Synth Tables in Excel
Play with 'item in inventory = skill available'
Play with item stacks

Windowskin needs updating, desperately
Menu UI design/implementation (Luna)
Icons for Armor

I have zero inclination to revive anything that I made. I can probably assist to some degree, though? I'm more inclined to assist with scripting for VX Ace projects than anything else, but, I could probably playtest, or assist with writing (if that's even a thing here)?

Sure thing!
BEGIN

Already had a to do list in the game directory, guess I'll copy it over
- remove previously implemented passive MP regen
- need to make a 'bite' animation
- balance first equipment shop's items
- make healing/mana potions regular items instead of battle items
- change chests to green and implement green chest list
- implement 4 skill submenu (currently is 1 skill)
- currently, there are too few skills in the game to warrant 4 skill slots...
- have learn skill display current skill commands (and choose one to replace)
- fix protect spell to apply to all attacks (instead of just physical attacks)
- start working on forest boss encounter (game currently ends before this)
- finish upper forest (planning to make this a postgame arena sort of place)
- remove the cabin in the forest (not sure what to put here though)
- implement suggestions from community

BTW if anyone wants to help or suggest new items/skills? Tell me. I know theres like no context here, but I think I need to get a game page set up.
A-are those warcraft 3 characters I see on achievements? I need that Arthas in my life.

FIRST PROGRESS UPDATE: BEGIN

I'm not 100% sure which one of my projects I'd like to resurrect in this time frame, but assuming it's Luminasis, I need to:
- Determine a new aesthetic look for the game.
- Create a new base in RMMV.
- Decide on how the gameplay flow is going to work. One of the things I really want to do is implement Damage Cut, Status Effect Hit Rate and Critical Hit Rate based on the enemy and caster element. I already have the script base done, now it's implementation.
- Design the Final Boss and the main bosses.
- Design new character skillset based on new mechanics and boss skills.
- Do some light world building and reduce the scope of the project this time.
- Create some base maps with RTP.
- Create new assets based on the prototypes.
