Description

Halloween approaches and it's that time of year when we remember the dead and dying. This year, instead of the typical horror-fest, we're going to be doing something about the corpses mouldering in our backyards.

That is, those games we never got around to finishing but always said "One day..." about. It's time to grab a shovel, dig up a dead one and lay it on the slab. Let's Frankenstein this thing!

Aim
The aim of this event is to take an old game that hasn't been touched in a while and bring it back to life with the intention of finishing it by the end of the month.

Event Rules
- Pick a game that's been out of commission for a while. I'm not going to be picky about how long they've been dead, as long as you haven't been actively working on it in for a while, it'll count.
- Work on it with the intent to finish before the due date (3rd December).
- Post progress updates at least once a week until the end date. I'll talk about that a bit more below.
- Finish the game by the due date and submit it to this page.

Rewards
If you do not finish your game in time, you'll get a participation badge for taking part in the event. This will be a low MS reward, but there will be supplemented rewards for taking part. This badge requires that at least one progress update badge to unlock.

If you actually complete the game and submit it to the site by the due date, you'll also get a badge. This badge requires at least two progress update badges to unlock.

Each of the four progress updates will net you a different badge and these will give you a tidy amount of MS too, so if you're not sure that you'll be able to finish your game in time, aim to take part in them!

Progress Updates
Over the course of the month (roughly once a week) you'll be asked for an update on your progress. Each time you'll be asked for something different - whether it be screenshots of current work, details of changed/finished components or other information.

To earn either of the main badges you must take part in some of these (not all of them, but it's encouraged that you do take part). You will be encouraged to give feedback to each other and post WIP pieces as well as finished stuff, so that everyone can keep abreast of how each other is doing. We're a community of developers, after all, even if it's just a hobby for some, so interacting and helping each other grow and encouraging each other is definitely something to aim for!

There will also, over the month, be a room on the RMN discord for people to talk about this event in particular and how they're going with their games for it. I encourage everyone taking part to join up and mingle.

First Update: Choose the game you are going to use and make a list of things that need changing/fixing/doing.

Second Update: Show off new vs old images and tell us a bit about your game.

Third Update: Fill in the survey below.
What have you accomplished on your project thus far?

What unexpected challenges have you run into in reviving your game?

How far through making the game would you say you are, currently?

Now that you've actually started working on the game, do you think you'll finish in time?

Can you see any big challenges that you might have to deal with in order to complete the game?

Is there anything in particular that you'd need help with in order to get past these challenges?

Would you be willing to ask others to help you with these possible issues?

Fourth Update: Make a game page, show off a screenshot of something new (gameplay-wise) and tell us how the gammak goes.

Fifth Update: Make a blog post detailing what you've done since the start of this event to where you are now in the game.

SIXTH PROGRESS UPDATE: BEGIN

Add your game download to the site and have it tagged for testers. Then get someone to do a test of what you have. Post their notes here, then put up your game for reaslies and add it to this page before the 3rd

FAQs
Do we need to make a gamepage?
If you already have an existing gamepage you don't need to make another. However, if your game is not already on the site, then you will have to make a gamepage for it as it is a requirement for submitting the games this time.

I will be checking the queue fairly often over the course of the event, especially towards the end, so the sooner you get your gamepages in, the better. If you need help getting your gamepage accepted, just PM me (Liberty) and I can help you out a bit, but usually I'll be giving you the same information as I give in the notes when a gamepage is denied so make sure to check those first! Also, the information in this thread is very useful: https://rpgmaker.net/forums/topics/5673/

How do I submit?
You must have a gamepage that has been accepted to the site and upload a version of your game there first. Then make sure you've signed up to this event. After that, hit the Submit button in the top-right corner of this page and pick your game from the list.

Is there a limit on the age of the game?
Nope. All that matters is that you haven't touched it in a while.

Can I just remake one of my old games that didn't get finished?
Yes, actually. All that matters is that the game in question exists before this event and hasn't been touched in a while. How you bring it back to life is up to you. Whether that means remaking it from the ground up or taking a half-finished game and scaling it down to fit within the month is up to you.

What about a game that's complete but needs some bug fixes and/or edits? Will that count?
I'm afraid not. It's really not in the spirit of the event - that is, taking something that isn't complete and bringing it back from that shallow (or deep) grave in order to spring back to complete 'health' again.

Can I just make a new game instead?
Again, not really in the spirit of the event, so no. Sorry, maybe next time.

Teams? Multiple entries?
If you want to team up with someone to help revive your game, that's definitely a-okay. Aside from that, there are some games out there that started with groups and just died. If those people want to get back together and try to finish the game, that's all well and dandy too. And sometimes an artist might be helping one team and have their own game as well. That's why I've allowed both teaming and multiple entries.

Currently I have been working on remaking the graphics for the game project and retooling systems from the DISASTEROUS Demo I made! Here's what I've done so far.

You can follow the game's progress at it's website: https://monstructsgame.com

For my game Robo Clash the old version was a different style.

This the old one. My mapping was really bad back then.

This is the new one using the DS+ Resource Pack.
I'm stugglin' right now (for part 2 of this event) to decide what to write. The episodic approach is pretty cool in concept, however I'm having a lot of trouble coming up with distinct stories.

So now I'm considering making it all one overarching story, with lots of sidequests sprinkled throughout which tell their own tales.
I think I'm gonna remake my VERY FIRST game in RM to see how much I've improved...
...maybe? I really wanna join but I can't guarantee that it'll be done before the deadline--

Game is called "Monster Town"
Small group of monsters and a pair of demons seek to rebuild a long-forgotten cult so that they may rule the world! However, their numbers are too few and their power too small, therefor they must find some artifacts and recruit monsters for their cause!
Just a simple dungeon crawler.

As for an image comparison, well, have a map!
I've been... downsizing.

SECOND PROGRESS UPDATE

Plot:
Infinite Nightmare is a game based on the actual civil war in Syria. The game follows the story of two siblings: Zayd and Hanan, who are now orphans and have to continue living in a world full of horrors. The player will take the role of Zayd, who as the big brother of Hanan is the only one remained to take care of her. Sometimes he has to make difficult choices for her safety, choices, which obviously the player will take and then lead him/her to different endings.

The original game was made in RPG maker MV, but since I work mostly with vx ace, I wanted to transfer it to vx ace for its "revival". The story is also a bit different from the original one... I hope, you will like it... assumed I will finish it in time ToT
One more thing: since the game is based on true events, it may be possible that it would contain some disturbing images: like death, blood, and those things you could see in a war.

Comparisons:
I've rewritten the story.

Basic idea is...well, Mario Sunshine xD I only realized after I wrote it, and read it now, that it's just like Sunshine. But I wrote out what events I will actually need to make. Being SMBX, that's pretty basic stuff.

I've worked on some graphics

I drew a few things in a Mario Paint ROM, then took screenshots, sizing it to match the tiles in game. I spent some time fixing what was already done, adding the effect files. I also got all the resources out of Mario Paint, ready to be turned into tiles.

Importing tiles is the most time consuming work in a custom gfx smbx game. I seem to keep forgetting this, as I continue to make over the top ones.
Plot

The Black Hunt - fearsome fae who ride the wilderness and kill those they find - have recently been spotted in the forest near Tumnil. Mirum, daughter of the Mayor of Setinzar, heads to Tumnil accompanied by her ex, Elesar, hoping to meet up with a contact there who will give her news about her missing boyfriend.

NEW

Finally managed to get the database entries back into place. Yay! It all works well, too, thank God.

OLD

One of the original maps. I'll probably still be using this one (with a few touch-ups) but will definitely be adding to the length of this dungeon for plot-based reasons.

Summary:
Young Clarisse is a spoiled, airheaded little princess who was kidnapped by the Dark Overlord on her birthday. After waking up in the Dark Overlord's castle, she mistakenly comes to the conclusion that this castle was a birthday gift from her father, and proceeds to tidy it up for herself by touring the castle and whipping her new "servants" into shape.

You can't fight and defeat enemies in this game. Instead, you handle encounters in one of two ways: Domination, where you must find ways to humiliate and demean foes by throwing tantrums and digging through their pasts, or Seduction, where you make the enemy fall head over heels for you by using seducing skills and acting in ways that the enemy likes. Each outcomes grants you specific bonuses, from receiving items to being able to recruit an enemy to act alongside you.

Endings are determined by the state the castle is in by the time you leave it. Which enemies you've dominated or seduced will affect the ending.

…Everything.
Now you’ve been swept away to an unknown island. All you can see are trees and a vast ocean, no other land for miles… You’ll have to put your skills to the test if you want to survive on The Deception Isles.

Gah, why am I sitting here overthinking significant additions and redesigns to what I have coded or planned. Need to quit that shit. If anything, I should probably be considering removing a few more things.
SECOND PROGRESS UPDATE:

Summary
I decided to work on Night of Marian after much deliberation. The story is about a young girl that just wants to take over the Underground city of Artygia. There are some other stuff like politics and 3 mafia-like entities but they're like backburner.

I'm still ironing out some very important plot details like the 6~7 bosses and fleshing out their areas. But my idea is that they're a representation of a tragedy for a specific area. I only have vague one liners for them so I can't really write about them in detail too. I'm still working on fixing my writing.

Comparison
I haven't really started the game engine work as much, but I've been writing. so here are some comparison screens of old and new stuff I suppose!

Remade the logo since I don't have the original files anymore.

I also edited the game's CSS I guess...
Update #2

Being as I'm working on the gameplay aspects of this game I'll just quickly detail the systems I'm working on. The skills user by the playable characters are upgradable, both through an upgrade system (which just needs a hud) and through equipment, specifically runes that you can equip. Rather than database a few hundred runes I've made a system where based on a few parameters (level and type) the game will generate a rune which you can equip. Furthermore these runes can be used in crafting to create new and stronger runes. Additionally by "dusting" runes you don't want, you gain runic dust which can be used to upgrade equipment. I'm hoping this will create a system where everything thing connected and relevant.

Also I purged nearly everything from before so all I have is a few small blocks of code left, hope that will do. Also all I've done is coding and you wanted an editor photo, so have even more code.

In Search of Dragons // 2nd Progress Update
summary
In Search of Dragons is the story of Owen, a nobleman, and Keith, his hired bodyguard, as they travel looking for dragons for reasons Owen refuses to explain. After reading in an ancient book dragons still lived in the area, they travel to a tiny country without even a proper name, a small village called Calren.
However as soon as they arrive the villagers insist no dragons have been around for centuries. Not one to give up, Owen is stubborn in investigating further, which will take them to find many things not necessarily related to dragons involving the mysterious past of the village and the strange Meriel, a herb gatherer treated as an outsider by the villagers.

Comparison:
There’s not much point since most of the work I’m doing is tweaking and polishign what was already there and it's not really indicative in screenshots...

2ND UPDATE POST

I've been working more on the graphics on this project and I'm close to finished and will soon be able to address any system issues and be ready for test play.

Altima's plot is so bare the player doesn't even have to experience it! Nothing stops the player from ignoring the first town that gives the gist of the story. It's also about two windows long:

Everything else is a mix of gameplay hints and some lore stuff I added years ago that I've long since forgotten and feels janky as fuck.

For an After shot I got this:

Simple boss: Starts with some ST moves, one can inflict paralyze, then turn 5 (AI turns start at turn 0 iirc) is his phase change: He starts with an AoE Stun, gives himself regen and ATK Up (Photosynthesis), Negation (removes buffs and gives buff immunity to party), and his king ST move Suplex. His AoE Stun and strongest ST move enter his moveset until he goes down. Not tested or balanced yet though. I found some internal issues that need to be fixed, mainly status players can inflict. Mainly moving player-inflictable poison to be a more balanced DoT and giving more than one character an ability to inflict it (lol I'll never stop changing important internal stuff).

e: For a Before shot assume the Green Giant only had one attack and like half those stats because lol original altima.

e2: Also one of those Negation (10MP) should be Negation (50MP) since I've switch MP to a boss AI control thing. Actually, I need to change the scan too so MP isn't displayed...

Loop's Quest was originally made in the Golden Age of Gam Mak event so the whole point is to load the game with tropes! So it is! So it is! Loop is the silent type. A discount Link, she tropes her way through Tropania, because she's the descendant of the Great Wizard, and it's her quest to destroy the evil Demon Lord. On her way, she meets friends who speak with her, and for her. I only ever managed to do a demo and never really came back to the game. But now, there's going to be more dungeons, more tropes, load-bearing bosses, more chosen-one-ness, and you name it. This event is this game's chance to shine!

For the most part, I see no reason to alter any of my old maps, but here's an old map and a new one.

Classic Map:

Brand new location Map:
Dragon's of Doom is a classic-style rpg with a twist with a focus on being a dragon. Not just any dragon, mind you, a dragon from the world of Halin. He is a bit young, and not quite bordering on 10 tons, but he's got spirit. Which is a good thing too, because the world is becoming a very dangerous place with the human's discovery of Alchemy. What will it mean for dragonkind? What will happen to the humans? Why is it called Dragon's of Doom? Stay tuned to find out!
