Description

Halloween approaches and it's that time of year when we remember the dead and dying. This year, instead of the typical horror-fest, we're going to be doing something about the corpses mouldering in our backyards.

That is, those games we never got around to finishing but always said "One day..." about. It's time to grab a shovel, dig up a dead one and lay it on the slab. Let's Frankenstein this thing!

Aim
The aim of this event is to take an old game that hasn't been touched in a while and bring it back to life with the intention of finishing it by the end of the month.

Event Rules
- Pick a game that's been out of commission for a while. I'm not going to be picky about how long they've been dead, as long as you haven't been actively working on it in for a while, it'll count.
- Work on it with the intent to finish before the due date (3rd December).
- Post progress updates at least once a week until the end date. I'll talk about that a bit more below.
- Finish the game by the due date and submit it to this page.

Rewards
If you do not finish your game in time, you'll get a participation badge for taking part in the event. This will be a low MS reward, but there will be supplemented rewards for taking part. This badge requires that at least one progress update badge to unlock.

If you actually complete the game and submit it to the site by the due date, you'll also get a badge. This badge requires at least two progress update badges to unlock.

Each of the four progress updates will net you a different badge and these will give you a tidy amount of MS too, so if you're not sure that you'll be able to finish your game in time, aim to take part in them!

Progress Updates
Over the course of the month (roughly once a week) you'll be asked for an update on your progress. Each time you'll be asked for something different - whether it be screenshots of current work, details of changed/finished components or other information.

To earn either of the main badges you must take part in some of these (not all of them, but it's encouraged that you do take part). You will be encouraged to give feedback to each other and post WIP pieces as well as finished stuff, so that everyone can keep abreast of how each other is doing. We're a community of developers, after all, even if it's just a hobby for some, so interacting and helping each other grow and encouraging each other is definitely something to aim for!

There will also, over the month, be a room on the RMN discord for people to talk about this event in particular and how they're going with their games for it. I encourage everyone taking part to join up and mingle.

First Update: Choose the game you are going to use and make a list of things that need changing/fixing/doing.

Second Update: Show off new vs old images and tell us a bit about your game.

Third Update: Fill in the survey below.
What have you accomplished on your project thus far?

What unexpected challenges have you run into in reviving your game?

How far through making the game would you say you are, currently?

Now that you've actually started working on the game, do you think you'll finish in time?

Can you see any big challenges that you might have to deal with in order to complete the game?

Is there anything in particular that you'd need help with in order to get past these challenges?

Would you be willing to ask others to help you with these possible issues?

Fourth Update: Make a game page, show off a screenshot of something new (gameplay-wise) and tell us how the gammak goes.

Fifth Update: Make a blog post detailing what you've done since the start of this event to where you are now in the game.

SIXTH PROGRESS UPDATE: BEGIN

Add your game download to the site and have it tagged for testers. Then get someone to do a test of what you have. Post their notes here, then put up your game for reaslies and add it to this page before the 3rd

FAQs
Do we need to make a gamepage?
If you already have an existing gamepage you don't need to make another. However, if your game is not already on the site, then you will have to make a gamepage for it as it is a requirement for submitting the games this time.

I will be checking the queue fairly often over the course of the event, especially towards the end, so the sooner you get your gamepages in, the better. If you need help getting your gamepage accepted, just PM me (Liberty) and I can help you out a bit, but usually I'll be giving you the same information as I give in the notes when a gamepage is denied so make sure to check those first! Also, the information in this thread is very useful: https://rpgmaker.net/forums/topics/5673/

How do I submit?
You must have a gamepage that has been accepted to the site and upload a version of your game there first. Then make sure you've signed up to this event. After that, hit the Submit button in the top-right corner of this page and pick your game from the list.

Is there a limit on the age of the game?
Nope. All that matters is that you haven't touched it in a while.

Can I just remake one of my old games that didn't get finished?
Yes, actually. All that matters is that the game in question exists before this event and hasn't been touched in a while. How you bring it back to life is up to you. Whether that means remaking it from the ground up or taking a half-finished game and scaling it down to fit within the month is up to you.

What about a game that's complete but needs some bug fixes and/or edits? Will that count?
I'm afraid not. It's really not in the spirit of the event - that is, taking something that isn't complete and bringing it back from that shallow (or deep) grave in order to spring back to complete 'health' again.

Can I just make a new game instead?
Again, not really in the spirit of the event, so no. Sorry, maybe next time.

Teams? Multiple entries?
If you want to team up with someone to help revive your game, that's definitely a-okay. Aside from that, there are some games out there that started with groups and just died. If those people want to get back together and try to finish the game, that's all well and dandy too. And sometimes an artist might be helping one team and have their own game as well. That's why I've allowed both teaming and multiple entries.

What have you accomplished on your project thus far?
I finished the boss encounter and battle for the begginer forest, surprisingly. At that point I for some reason decided to make the game end there, but instead of the game taking u back to the title screen, I made the player look for a secret end game boss. That makes 3 total bosses in the game. Super.

What unexpected challenges have you run into in reviving your game?
I thought the bosses were too easy, but I knew from experience that when the developer thinks it's easy, it's never the same view for the player. Better too easy than too hard lol.

How far through making the game would you say you are, currently?
10%, but that's an overestimate. I decided to just make the game end there as if that's the actual length of the game. Don't worry, the players will never know the difference, heh heh heh

Now that you've actually started working on the game, do you think you'll finish in time?
Not with a full time job, no.

Can you see any big challenges that you might have to deal with in order to complete the game?
Adding a new tileset might literally be the biggest upcoming challenge yet. I'm not content to stay in RTP land forever so that's gonna have to happen sometime. In the far future.

Is there anything in particular that you'd need help with in order to get past these challenges?
Maybe, but I will try to figure it out myself first. Lucky rpg maker is such an easy program, simple enough for a child. They werent kidding.

The last question because iPads are dumb and shows a white box where liberty's post was
Game needs lots of choices, weapons/armor/skills mostly. If for some unfathomable reason you want to add stuff to my super game, you need to give me icon and attributes for the equipment/skill you want to add.

What have you accomplished on your project thus far?
Uhhh... I've made a couple things prettier in chapter 5.5 and squashed a couple bugs, and added a ton of bookcase book names. Oh, and I did manage to make the walking and face sprites for Chochuo.

What unexpected challenges have you run into in reviving your game?
Since my schedule has changed back to working full time, I've had far less time to devote to this kinda stuff. Also, there's toooons of bugs I need to iron out before I can even approach the furthest area that needs more content.

How far through making the game would you say you are, currently?
I'm about 90% done with the game, maybe 85%. Tho to be honest, I've barely done anything during this event proper.
(as a note: the .5 chapters are chapters which take place before the party has a chance to go home between chapters, and are just as large as the other chapters, if not bigger)
1 (done!)
2 (done!)
3 (done!)
3.5 (done!)

5 (done!)
5.5 <---- currently bugtesting here
6 (play-through later)
7 <---- this needs moar work
8 <--- hasn't even been started yet, should be where the ending is tho

Now that you've actually started working on the game, do you think you'll finish in time?
I doubt it, but any motivation to continue working on it helps.

Can you see any big challenges that you might have to deal with in order to complete the game?
Yeah. There's a lot of stuff to make, and barely any time to work on it (due to dayjob), as well as my friends (who I usually show stuff off to) being just completely oblivious to my efforts and not really giving all that much support on it. It's kinda disheartening when I gush about all the funny jokes I wrote and they don't even bat an eye or even react. I swear they ignore me half the time.

Is there anything in particular that you'd need help with in order to get past these challenges?
Uhhh, motivation? Dungeon design? maybe an extra hand for some spritework, but I can do that by myself if needed. If time would allow, maybe some major overhaul on the battle difficulty, but other than that, I probably don't need too much help, mostly just a helping hand to make things get done faster.

Would you be willing to ask others to help you with these possible issues?
Uhhh... maybe? I usually work alone, but if somebody's willing to assist and not be a total flake (like 99% of the teams I've ever worked with...), I'd be happy to accept their help.
As for actually bothering to ask for help? I usually don't do that. Besides, isn't everyone else too busy on their own games to help some 20-something year old finish her old cute visual fanfic game that was started back in high school?
What have you accomplished on your project thus far?
I completed all the starting classes, all the extra characters, wrote out the entire story. Pretty much got a somewhat decent database going right now.

What unexpected challenges have you run into in reviving your game?
A lot of the extra features I have been wanting to implement, I've made countless test rooms testing things like the alchemy pot or the potion brewing system, and both have proven to be a pain in the ass to implement the right way.

Balancing the monsters has also been a thorn in my ass, i'm using 2k3 so of course its a pain.

How far through making the game would you say you are, currently?
Hmm about 50% I got a lot of the database, the only real things I need to do is the skills and items, weapons, armor etc, I have a bunch of maps already completed and ready to go, pretty much once I get the database done, the mapping and event making will be no problem.

Now that you've actually started working on the game, do you think you'll finish in time?
EDIT- After looking at the extended time, I might actually mange it, probably not but I shall try!

Can you see any big challenges that you might have to deal with in order to complete the game?

Balancing, Balancing, BALANCING, due to so many party members and having the ability to pick a starting character, the balancing part will be the biggest challenge, I foresee countless hours of my time sinking into this.

Is there anything in particular that you'd need help with in order to get past these challenges?

Hmm not really as of now, its mostly left up to me to figure it out, unless I get a play tester.

Would you be willing to ask others to help you with these possible issues?

If balancing gets extremely bad then a playtester might be needed, but I'm a mostly a one man team.
Third Update:
What have you accomplished on your project thus far?
I have accomplished:
1. Actually starting on this game and getting over a personal issue of mine.
2. Solidifying the plot of the game based on my current ruleset.
3. Finished the draft of the world map.
4. Started a wire frame for the art style.
5. Contacted an Environment Concept artist.
6. Actually figuring out how I want the gameplay to work. Unfortunately, I have no idea if I have the capacity to create it.
7. Recasting the whole character list and removing all cameos from my friends.

What unexpected challenges have you run into in reviving your game?
I can't believe I took 3 days to decide on a color palette.

How far through making the game would you say you are, currently?
Far from over. Probably the first 1% again.

Now that you've actually started working on the game, do you think you'll finish in time?
Hell naw. But it still feels great to actually still work on a game I have 100% control over.

Can you see any big challenges that you might have to deal with in order to complete the game?
1. Engine issues. I can see RPG Maker MV hating the shit out of this game. I'm debating whether I should use GODOT or VNMaker. Both are amazing alternatives. The battle system is going to be a chore.
2. Creating art assets.
3. Environment concept art.
4. Actually writing a compelling political narrative.

Is there anything in particular that you'd need help with in order to get past these challenges?
1. I probably need a programmer, but I need to get off my ass and actually do it for real.
2. I need to fully realize all the areas in the game and decide how much content I need and how much to cut.
3. The game has a huge identity crisis of whether it wants to be story driven or gameplay driven. I still have no idea how to tackle this issue.
4. I need to take more work/commission that actually pays me for the ungodly amount of time I spend (that isn't just DEGICA) so I can pay some artist to cover for my weakest area.

Would you be willing to ask others to help you with these possible issues?
LockeZ
I'd really like to get rid of LockeZ. His play style is way too unpredictable. He's always like this too. If he ran a country, he'd just kill and imprison people at random until crime stopped.

What have you accomplished on your project thus far?
Finished a dungeon I was working on before I stopped last year. Made most of the enemies and battles for that dungeon and also another one. Made some graphics. Did some scripting work to add some new combat features and solve some bugs.

What unexpected challenges have you run into in reviving your game?
I've worked on almost no new content because I left so many things half-done in the past. That kinda sucks. After 150 hours of work this month so far, I hardly have anything "new" to show off.

How far through making the game would you say you are, currently?
Maybe 10%? I honestly feel like I'm further away from finishing than I was a month ago, if that were possible.

Now that you've actually started working on the game, do you think you'll finish in time?
Not a chance in hell. If I finish by this time next year I'll consider it a monumental success. 2020 is more realistic if I keep working solo.

Can you see any big challenges that you might have to deal with in order to complete the game?
Well, I still hate and also suck at doing graphics, and that's still what I'm spending 75% or more of my time on. I knew that going in though. That's why the project died the first time. The challenge is to not give up.

Is there anything in particular that you'd need help with in order to get past these challenges?
You know, I definitely need help with graphics, but every time someone tries to help me, they either vanish after making one sprite, or they want to redo my entire project from scratch to match their vision. I don't even mind if someone wants to redo all my graphics, it just needs to be someone I trust.

Would you be willing to ask others to help you with these possible issues?
Depends who they are. It would need to be a graphic artist I'm sure is going to stick around long enough to actually do the whole game, and who I know I can work well with. And whose work matches the style I want for this game. If I made a list of those artists, I think it would pretty much just be Puddor.

Hey Puddor, want to make a video game about punching sharks? It might take a while. Message me if so.
Update #3

What have you accomplished on your project thus far?
Not much so far, I've designed several systems and implemented a few.

What unexpected challenges have you run into in reviving your game?
IGMC happening at the same time is probably the only one, thankfully with the extention I'm hoping to complete both games.

How far through making the game would you say you are, currently?
20% - probably more actually as I only have 1 more major system and all the combat left.

Now that you've actually started working on the game, do you think you'll finish in time?
Yes, pretty ocnfident I will get everything done in time.

Can you see any big challenges that you might have to deal with in order to complete the game?
No but often the testing phase doesn't get the time it needs.

Is there anything in particular that you'd need help with in order to get past these challenges?
I don't think so.

Would you be willing to ask others to help you with these possible issues?

IGMC =_=

How far through making the game would you say you are, currently?
Not far at all. Barely did the prep for actual new work rather than revising old stuff.

Now that you've actually started working on the game, do you think you'll finish in time?
If the IGMC wasn't in the same period then definitely, with it chewing and spitting me out, I can only hope.

Can you see any big challenges that you might have to deal with in order to complete the game?
IGMC killing me dead.

Someone invent a time machine. (In real life, eventing is gon be a bitch)

IGMC

How far through making the game would you say you are, currently?
As far as I was when I started this jam.

Now that you've actually started working on the game, do you think you'll finish in time?
With the time of this jam extended on account of IGMC, I'm still pretty confident I can.

Can you see any big challenges that you might have to deal with in order to complete the game?
The game was pretty simple, to begin with, so mostly just getting it done.

Is there anything in particular that you'd need help with in order to get past these challenges?
If I did need help, it'd be with mapping.

Would you be willing to ask others to help you with these possible issues?
Yes, if any issues arise.
I may have added a gif to my post

What have you accomplished on your project thus far?
I have furiously polished a turd!

- I added some new enemy mechanics, the big one being shields. When they take damage all damage is negated but the shield counter decreases. Good for enemies to have who are on the losing end of the action economy but the player can also get them (for now). There's also recovery rate up/down states but they're collecting dust right now. Current plan is probably a tanky boss that'll tank your healing. I'm not sure if the player will get access to them either.

- I cleaned up some icons. Some state icons didn't have the state background, there's a Max HP/MP buff that I standardized to look like the other stat buffs, and a few other little things.

- I cleaned up the scan screen. Now it shows more relevant information like the rates of states the player can actually inflict like debuffs instead of what they can't like confusion. Bosses also get big kewl hp bars too!

- For some reason I have a weird holdup with elemental resistance. In earlier versions of Demon's Gate the common capstope ability for classes was... a single target single element half damage buff. In Altima there are accessories that increase one elemental resistance by one level and were unique items! I added them to a big accessory shop in the game and removed the unique description from the armor.

- I did a boss and some enemy AIs! Still untested and unbalanced!

- I made a map of the game! I might change the color balance on the dungeon markers though. World map is cruddy and has few interesting landmarks but redoing it killed a previous attempt to finish this dumb game so I'm just going to settle on it and leave good and interesting world maps to kentona.

What unexpected challenges have you run into in reviving your game?
Nothing unexpected, just my usual flaffing about. A brief panic attack when testing something and my accuracy rates were in the toilet for a reason I couldn't find right away. My script backend is basically a disaster but most of the heavy lifting is already done at least.

How far through making the game would you say you are, currently?

I'd give it still about 80%, I haven't done much to really progress it so far beyond waxing. Like the scan stuff I could've left unfixed and the game would still be playable. Most importantly though is I got some steam going again, I just need to focus and put it to good use!

Now that you've actually started working on the game, do you think you'll finish in time?
I'll give you a definite maybe. My motivation, energy, and enthusiasm flies and shines like Icarus!

Can you see any big challenges that you might have to deal with in order to complete the game?

Altima is a really simple game. Every big hurdle should be cleared except for the ones I'll make for myself. Maybe I'll break my accuracy algorithm again!

Yes.

What have you accomplished on your project thus far?
A while back, I sat down late at night. I thought, "I should make the town and/or city this game takes place in." So I spent that whole night crafting the residential area, the school, the park, and some nearby caves. I also spent some time tightening up the first "episode" (the game progresses in episodes) in the game.

What unexpected challenges have you run into in reviving your game?
I often ask myself the question, "was it a good idea to make this game episodic, instead of one whole story?" Turns out, coming up with complete short stories, a la episodes, is proving to be quite difficult.

How far through making the game would you say you are, currently?
Still early on, as I only have one episode complete out of a total of 4 or 5.

Now that you've actually started working on the game, do you think you'll finish in time?
Once IGMC 2017 is out of the way, I might. I may have to change the story structure. We'll see.

Can you see any big challenges that you might have to deal with in order to complete the game?
I originally started this game with the idea of making it episodic, like a television show. You could just sit down and play any episode and experience a complete story in the lives of these characters. That means I could also make new episodes and put them up for download, so if someone really enjoyed the game, they could keep playing whenever I added a new episode. I figure if I made all of these setpieces (and I have a lot of graphics created and in place already), that'll give me what's needed to keep the episodes coming. That decision is putting a heavy load on me, and I'm a bit stuck on what to do.

Is there anything in particular that you'd need help with in order to get past these challenges?
Feedback and suggestions. Encouragement.

Would you be willing to ask others to help you with these possible issues?
I'm solo-ing this thing, but feedback on my ideas are always welcome.

The International Gardener Master Conference. We all get together, about once a year, to enjoy a month long seminar where we discuss various strategies to agriculture, landscaping, and general gardening activities. It seems many of us on these forums are fellow gardeners.

Then there's the Indie Game Maker Contest of 2017, where a person or a team must create a game within one month, with a chance of winning $10,000. This year, the tool of choice is an official RPG Maker engine.
Updato #3@!
What have you accomplished on your project thus far?
Imported assets, mapped a map, fixed graphics, evented first chapter of story, added most items and given them descripts, etc.

What unexpected challenges have you run into in reviving your game?
Nothing majorly unexpected. Mabye the difficulty in centering up-rezzed sprites. Nothing major so far. Oh except maybe being constantly sick with colds, flus, fevers, and other bugs! Freakin heck man.

How far through making the game would you say you are, currently?
About 10%, but a lot of the drudgery is over. Only have a bit of database to work on as I go.

Now that you've actually started working on the game, do you think you'll finish in time?
Possibly with the time extension and if I don't get another really bad flu.

Can you see any big challenges that you might have to deal with in order to complete the game?
Condensing the story so it doesn't spiral out of do-ability in the alloted time. It doesn't need to be a 40-hour epic, although that would be cool to make.

Is there anything in particular that you'd need help with in order to get past these challenges?
Not that I can think of, most of the challenges can be solved with simple common events or by googling.

Would you be willing to ask others to help you with these possible issues?
Maybe, after I googled it for a while of course. I don't really like to bug peeps with simple issues.
What have you accomplished on your project thus far?
The map is complete, the event is also done, since it's an old game I already created the story before.
I still haven't completed the drawing for some cutscenes, tho.

What unexpected challenges have you run into in reviving your game?
Well... since my first game was made in flash (even before that it;s in microsoft powerpoint) so I kinda need to improve the eventing. From a complete visual-novel game to a rpg (which means EXPLORATIONS). However, it's very fun!!

How far through making the game would you say you are, currently?
80%~ I'm kinda proud I could do a game this fast, unlike before. But maybe it's full of holes and bugs and errors.....

Now that you've actually started working on the game, do you think you'll finish in time?
Yeees. I hope so. Sometimes my internet is bad so I couldn't access the net to submit game... ;;

Can you see any big challenges that you might have to deal with in order to complete the game?
Yeah... Since my first game was made in 1-2 months ._. and now I must complete it in few days... whoa.

Is there anything in particular that you'd need help with in order to get past these challenges?
Maybe... grammar or spell check? My English is really bad, and I'm not happy with that. Yep. Maybe just that one.

Would you be willing to ask others to help you with these possible issues?
YEEAAAA! If anyone wana beta-test or proofread and help me correct anything wrong with the words I choose in my game... I'll be really grateful.

Not much. I managed to draw some game related sketches, while thinking about ideas I had back in January.

What unexpected challenges have you run into in reviving your game?

How far through making the game would you say you are, currently?

0% of new and refined content is finished.

Yes, I shouldn't need more than 10 days.

Can you see any big challenges that you might have to deal with in order to complete the game?

Only overcoming my comfort.

Is there anything in particular that you'd need help with in order to get past these challenges?

Someone to boss me around every day.

Would you be willing to ask others to help you with these possible issues?

Dunno, I don't think I have an exactly game development related problem. But I'm willing to help others with theirs.

Hey, cool! I wanna do something for this...

But alas I know I probably won't. But then again...
UPDATE 3!!! >u<

What have you accomplished on your project thus far?
If I have to be honest... not much unfortunately ToT
Recently I couldn't work much on it because of school and exams, so... I think that if Liberty wouldn't have extended the dead line I couldn't have been finished with it. In fact I'm really grateful for it! :)
Anyway, what I accomplished until now: some maps, I improved the story a bit and I made the various choices and their influence for the endings.

What unexpected challenges have you run into in reviving your game?
The mapping of a destroyed city by the war is more difficult that I could ever have imagined! :(
I think it would take some time... Let's hope for the best.

How far through making the game would you say you are, currently?
Ooooh... I wouldn't say much "far"... Let's say... 1% ? *runs in an angle for hiding from shame* O ////_//// O

Now that you've actually started working on the game, do you think you'll finish in time?
I hope so! I made actually a plan... and that's a first for me, since I never made a plan for making a game before! I really hope it, though I'm not sure of it... After all, I never got a game finished before the dead line. ToT

Can you see any big challenges that you might have to deal with in order to complete the game?
SCHOOL AND EXAMS! No, seriously... School can be quite a pain sometimes... especially when this is my last year before graduation!

Is there anything in particular that you'd need help with in order to get past these challenges?
I don't think so... My games are pretty simple in the making. I focus myself especially on the story and characters, which isn't something really difficult or something which could need any help.

Would you be willing to ask others to help you with these possible issues?
Actually... no. Because I want to finally be able to end a game within the dead line BY MYSELF!... Although, it won't be that easy...
Oh, hey, Liberty, the Event Rules section still says "complete by the 31st". I mean, yeah, I don't think anyone's actually reading that section anymore, but, yanno...

anyways
PROGRESS UPDATE #3 GO

What have you accomplished on your project thus far?
Other than changing the player sprite, all the work has been engine stuff. Added two moves, added and tweaked some other systems, ironed out some quirks here and there. The big one is the scoring system, and the accompanying changes to the dynamic difficulty system and how the player powers up. I'm still technically working on that, and to be frank I've completely lost track of what I'm doing anymore lol
I thought I had it figured out but then I noticed some glaring problems with what I had and I've been trying to figure out what to rework the design into, but doing it by just editing the scripts in Game Maker directly rather than planning anything out in advance, and its starting to scramble my brain a little.

What unexpected challenges have you run into in reviving your game?
I didn't expect to take what was a basic game idea and engine and start hacking it at random into a fucking nightmare.

How far through making the game would you say you are, currently?
No clue. I mean, with 0 out of 5 stages done, it doesn't sound like much, but this is a shmup we're talking about here so who knows, that might end up being, like, 50% of the process. If I had to throw a number out there, I guess 30%, with the next 10~20% being the remaining engine needs.

Now that you've actually started working on the game, do you think you'll finish in time?
hahaha no

Can you see any big challenges that you might have to deal with in order to complete the game?
I think I'm at the big challenge. Though, I won't be surprised if the haphazard nature of this project's coding comes to bite me in the ass later on down the road, or if Game Maker finds new ways to troll me. Or if my brain just turns into jelly.

Is there anything in particular that you'd need help with in order to get past these challenges? Would you be willing to ask others to help you with these possible issues?
Since it's all design theory and delicate balancing of formulas and such, there's not much anyone could really do for me.
