Description

What're We Cooking?

A full game cooked up in two weeks (and a weekend)! The cookoff begins on February 1st and wraps up on February 17th where all games must be submitted before the end of the day. Check the event page (and your account's timezone) to see when the event ends in your local time.

The Kitchen Suite

The tool of choice is RPG Maker VX Ace Lite! It is the free but feature limited version of RPG Maker VX Ace. The restrictions of Ace Lite are as follows:

Maximum Database Entries
  • 10 Actors
  • 10 Classes
  • 126 Skills
  • 16 Items
  • 60 Weapons
  • 60 Armors
  • 30 Enemies
  • 30 Troops
  • 25 States
  • 110 Animations
  • 4 Tilesets
  • 10 Common events
  • 100 Switches
  • 100 Variables
  • There are no other database restrictions

Map & Event Limitations
  • 20 Maps
  • 10 Events per map
  • Call Common Event is disabled

Script Limitations
  • The script editor is disabled.
  • The 'Script' event command is disabled. Other script commands in Assign Variable, Condition Branch, and Move Event are still enabled.

These are strictly implementation restrictions that you are free to work around. Need more than sixteen items? Make your key items weapons nobody can equip! Want more than ten playable characters? Perhaps when one leaves the party you could overwrite its name and stats with your new character! Twenty five troops too limiting? Make a troop that adds random enemies via battle events!

Please note: While it is possible to add your own scripts to a game through devious means the spirit of the Ace Lite restriction rules in this contest. Injecting scripts is not allowed beyond using the enabled script calls for their intended purposes. Of course changing the database caps through other means is also right out. Any game found violating these restrictions will be disqualified.

You can download RPG Maker VX Ace Lite here.

If you want to see what you can do under such restrictions Deckiller has made a game in Ace Lite called Kolmesarta. Feel free to check it out!

Your Ingredients!

Everything in the kitchen is allowed! There is no theme to the cook off besides obeying the restrictions of Ace Lite. There are no resource limitations for this contest as Ace Lite does not restrict what you can import into your game. Whip out the spice rack! Prepare the vegetables! Go hog wild! It's a free for all!

Nobody wants a half baked morsel though. The only requirement beyond using RPG Maker VX Ace Lite is that the game must be complete. Only finished games are wanted here!

For the Tastiest of Them All

We've got four judges reuniting to sample the delicacies of all participants: The RTP Princess Liberty, The Amazing Artist Nessiah, the Makerscore Master Deckiller, and the Ludicrously Lazy GreatRedSpirit! Their number one game will received a boxed copy of RPG Maker VX Ace generously donated by Liberty! The lead developer of the winning game will be contacted by Liberty to make shipping arrangements.

That isn't the only prize though! After submissions are closed there will also be a two week voting phase for all members of RMN to vote for their favorite game! Voting will be open from February 18th to March 11th. The winner will receive their choice of any item excluding RPG Maker VX Ace from the RPGMakerWeb.com store courtesy of RPGMakerWeb!

There is always the achievement badge for participating too! One of a kind will not be made available again! Submit to that completionist tingle and take part!

BUT WHEN CHAOS SAYS IT, IT SOUNDS REALLY GOOD (still, I forsee completion.)

HEH

yeah I don't forsee issues

I mean the 14th yeah but that's it
Ok, so I went back and added stuff to the beginning to not make it so abrupt, then I did one of the endings and...

Ummm...

Somehow, in the process I think the tone of my game went from "a bit dark" to "potentially grim, dark and depressing as hell".

0_o And I'm not sure if that's a good thing or not. Just how much is TOO much?

When you've hit Warhammer territory, which I doubt.

And... It is done.

Hmm...
You realize you used VX Ace and not the Lite edition?
I cannot open it with Lite, file format error, which might make this submission out-of-ruley. And you need the rtp to play it.

Given its shortness, you could easily remake it in Lite. And even expand on the concept, with custom routes, more enemies and original "get the out-of-reach key for the next room" situations. You could even create random succession of independent maps to make it more rogue-like.

BTW, create puzzles with Lite's limitations is the main point of the contest.
If you cannot adapt your engine to your design, then adapt your design to your engine.
Gameprofile is up!

Still a long way to go... Time to learn how to use the database and make battles!

Nah, it's not so grim and dark that it boomerangs around and becomes unintentionally hilarious.

...I wound up revising the dialogue a little bit this morning. Ok, it's a little less depressing. And better. *phew*
I like "Potentially grim, dark and depressing as hell". >:
Maybe that's because I have a project actually called Shadow Sadness >_>
Just curious... haven't seen any limitations on the length of the game in the details... is there a guideline here, or is it anything goes?

How long are other peoples' adventures... and what of side missions and extras - I am curious how much of this will be figured in? Just how are judges looking at the games, and what criteria are they using?

Being my third go at making a game with this software, I am not sure of how much a chance I stand, but I am wondering if all my time working in plot and sub-plot are worthwhile, seeing the style that some people are going for (using pictures when people are talking and all that jazz... stuff that I don't have, without access to graphics software/RTP files from the full length version or a previous version of the real deal).

ALSO, I was under the impression that using 'common events' AT ALL was out of the scope of the rules, even though they could be called through items (and skills) in the lite version....?
Seeing that there's only 20 maps with 10 events per map, I'd say most games are fairly short - possibly less than an hour.

As to common events, I'd say they're fine. They were just added on the list because people pointed out that you can't use them like you normally would, but it's within the program to call them via items and skills so it should be fine. Now if you broke the engine to make them callable as you normally would do, then there would be an issue.

hahaha. XD. At least one person who's not going to mark my game down for being too dark!

EDIT: I think I know which ending you'll likely take, then. :P

20 maps maximum, so most game are gonna be short. Mine is probably gonna be about an hour and a half, all done (running through the story with no battles takes about 25 minutes)

How long are other peoples' adventures... and what of side missions and extras

Oh heck no, I'm not making side quests. If I have time, I might make a crafting thing along the lines of "Hey! bring me three drops from various enemies and I'll make you something!" if I have time. But that's it for side stuff. My game is very linear.

Being my third go at making a game with this software, I am not sure of how much a chance I stand

Probably still a good chance. I'm more of an RMXP user and I've never touched VX before. But this game I'm making? I REALLY like what I'm doing with it. I'm sure you can stand a chance. :)

Sure, going for a plot heavy angle is worthwhile. That's the route I'm going. I'm using about 90% RTP files, with a few battlers and sprites and songs imported. And the game STILL looks pretty good.

My main concern is the battle system...Balancing that is always a pain.
How do I go about making the game RTP independent?

In lite, there is no RTP. Everything that a new Lite game needs to run is included in the Graphics/ and Audio/ folders already. Anything you add will just be... anything you add.
I've almost started! I'm doing much better this time around.

Good luck getting it done. Due date is in seven days.

Well, time to finally bite the bullet and work on the combat system...*clickety clickety* ...Well the tutorial boss's gimmick works. That's good.

I noticed it copied the entire RTP (or whatever you call it) in the project's folder. I guess it's ok if I delete the files I'm not using, then?

It's only part of the RTP, but yes, you can.
You can download the actual RTP as well, if you want, and then import stuff from there.

I got a bunch of extra battlers and sprites from that.
I remember an article on RMN about balancing battles. Can anyone point me to that? Cause I suck at it right now.
