What're We Cooking?

A full game cooked up in two weeks (and a weekend)! The cookoff begins on February 1st and wraps up on February 17th where all games must be submitted before the end of the day. Check the event page (and your account's timezone) to see when the event ends in your local time.

The Kitchen Suite

The tool of choice is RPG Maker VX Ace Lite! It is the free but feature limited version of RPG Maker VX Ace. The restrictions of Ace Lite are as follows:

Maximum Database Entries
  • 10 Actors
  • 10 Classes
  • 126 Skills
  • 16 Items
  • 60 Weapons
  • 60 Armors
  • 30 Enemies
  • 30 Troops
  • 25 States
  • 110 Animations
  • 4 Tilesets
  • 10 Common events
  • 100 Switches
  • 100 Variables
  • There are no other database restrictions

Map & Event Limitations
  • 20 Maps
  • 10 Events per map
  • Call Common Event is disabled

Script Limitations
  • The script editor is disabled.
  • The 'Script' event command is disabled. Other script commands in Assign Variable, Condition Branch, and Move Event are still enabled.

These are strictly implementation restrictions that you are free to work around. Need more than sixteen items? Make your key items weapons nobody can equip! Want more than ten playable characters? Perhaps when one leaves the party you could overwrite its name and stats with your new character! Twenty five troops too limiting? Make a troop that adds random enemies via battle events!

Please note: While it is possible to add your own scripts to a game through devious means the spirit of the Ace Lite restriction rules in this contest. Injecting scripts is not allowed beyond using the enabled script calls for their intended purposes. Of course changing the database caps through other means is also right out. Any game found violating these restrictions will be disqualified.

You can download RPG Maker VX Ace Lite here.

If you want to see what you can do under such restrictions Deckiller has made a game in Ace Lite called Kolmesarta. Feel free to check it out!

Your Ingredients!

Everything in the kitchen is allowed! There is no theme to the cook off besides obeying the restrictions of Ace Lite. There are no resource limitations for this contest as Ace Lite does not restrict what you can import into your game. Whip out the spice rack! Prepare the vegetables! Go hog wild! It's a free for all!

Nobody wants a half baked morsel though. The only requirement beyond using RPG Maker VX Ace Lite is that the game must be complete. Only finished games are wanted here!

For the Tastiest of Them All

We've got four judges reuniting to sample the delicacies of all participants: The RTP Princess Liberty, The Amazing Artist Nessiah, the Makerscore Master Deckiller, and the Ludicrously Lazy GreatRedSpirit! Their number one game will received a boxed copy of RPG Maker VX Ace generously donated by Liberty! The lead developer of the winning game will be contacted by Liberty to make shipping arrangements.

That isn't the only prize though! After submissions are closed there will also be a two week voting phase for all members of RMN to vote for their favorite game! Voting will be open from February 18th to March 11th. The winner will receive their choice of any item excluding RPG Maker VX Ace from the RPGMakerWeb.com store courtesy of RPGMakerWeb!

There is always the achievement badge for participating too! One of a kind will not be made available again! Submit to that completionist tingle and take part!

Or maybe it means I drove her to insanity and she's now in the mental hospital going "stoptheherpaderpmusicstoptheherpaderpmusicstoptheherpaderpmusicstoptheherpaderpmusicOHGODNOTTHESPIDERBOSS".

:s It's mostly that Liberty isn't using the skills very efficiently at all. If she did, she wouldn't be having anywhere near that amount of difficulty. You can't brute force my game. Not on (Standard) anyway.

I mean, I've seen her use Call of the Wild -> Precision slice ONCE. That's the simplest damage dealing combo in the game and really strong for how simple it is...

>_> I can't imagine how she's gonna react to the final boss. I'm honestly worried she'll give up once she hits it, if the forest boss doesn't do it first.

Then again, watching her play made me realize I need to be more clear at the start of the game that you CANNOT play the game on (Standard) like a regular JRPG...I think I'll need to go and rename my difficulty modes and make the easiest difficulty play more like a regular JRPG (and remove a lot of the boss gimmicks).
Call of the Wild and Precision Slice?

Oh goddesses, why didn't I thinka that?!
I WILL RULE THE WORLD WITH THIS COMBO! MUHAHAHAHAHA!

(Seriously though, I haven't played your game in a while. I think I'll get back to it!)
I have a ten video limit, remember, so unless I feel I'm close to the end I'll probably end at the ten mark, despite whether I enjoyed a game or not.

As for the battles, it... well, it was the music that put me off so much that I just didn't want to bother with them. I'm actually pretty shocked about how much it affected my wanting to battle. I've since changed it, though I haven't had time to play in the last few days, but I'll try to get more done tonight.

I did realise about certain combos but I don't like being stuck using the same moves over and over and over. It's boring, so I experiment. Yes, I already knew about that High-crit/Attack combo but filler battles shouldn't take so long even with said skills (and remember I did use it at the start but it really didn't do much for me, especially when you consider that Criticals are random and some people just don't have the lucky touch.)

In the case of random certain (it's what I call it) it's hard to balance since it is random. It would have been a better idea to use a sure certain instead, but then again, my opinion.

I'd also like to point out that I WILL NOT use meta information. I rarely use guides of any kind when I play any game and I won't be using yours, so if I stumble through boss fights blindly it's because you haven't given me the information I need in game, where it should be. NPCs or books or character conversations or cutscenes or any number of things can be used to impart this information but just having a file outside the game does not equate information given. Sorry, but it just doesn't count.

And don't worry, the spider boss is NOTHING compared to some of the bosses in "How to be Funny" or that fucking magician in Depression (;.;). I had to nerf some of them to pieces. At least I'm quite sure Spider is beatable with the correct application of skills and luck, it's just a little annoying that it's become a roadblock for me when I want to see the rest of the story and how it pans out. If I nerf it a little it's because I'm anxious to see the next part... which is a good thing in this case. ^.^

(Also, I have it on good authority that my mind will either be broken or be able to claim unbreakable status by the end of this judging since I still have Rhyme's game to go. Which I am keeping for last... because I agreed to play it on the Insane setting.

I must be a masochist. orz )

Oh right, you have a limit...

:) Well, if you're really wanting more of the story and you have a strict limit, then nerf your way though all you want. I really hope you get to the end and enjoy it.

Yeah, I do think that making Wilder based on criticals was a mistake. Not because it's based on chance (with call of the wild, more than half my attacks tend to be criticals.). Rather it's because criticals are so powerful that when mixed with the chance factor, it makes things weird in terms of balance. I'm not sure what I can do to fix that without a total remake, though...And the criticals serve the important purpose of being one of the ways to bypass high defense...I'll look into it when I rebalance the game around non-random encounters after I install the full version of RMVX.

I'd also like to point out that I WILL NOT use meta information. :) Good.

You're supposed to struggle through the bosses, learning their "tells" and experimenting until you find the most efficient way to turn the battle in your favor. The FAQ is there for people who don't have the patience to figure out the bosses on their own.

I don't have NPCs or books talking about how to beat the bosses because there are so few of them, and once you know how the bosses work, they can be trivialized... The next game I'm planning, which is gonna be based on hunting down bosses, will have that, just by virtue of there being more, so spoiling a few solutions here and there won't be so bad.

it's just a little annoying that it's become a roadblock for me when I want to see the rest of the story and how it pans out. If I nerf it a little it's because I'm anxious to see the next part... which is a good thing in this case. ^.^

:D Well, then have at it. Hit them with your nerf gun if you need to, as much as you want. I want you to be able to make it to the end of the game. Stuff becomes amazing at that point. ^^

I suppose you're almost done with the games then, Liberty?

OH WOW, I SUCK. :O

Sorry my game was hateable. :(
Whoa, dude, I didn't say it was hateable! /me hugs
Just a little frustrating at times... I liked the story and the concept a lot. Did you watch the last video? I had positive things to say too~

As for game finishes - I'm almost there. I wasn't very well yesterday at all, so I wasn't in the right frame of mind, but today! I feel a lot better. (It comes and goes.)

Just remember that if I say something it's to help and that it's not really indicative of score. Unless, like, I glow all over dat game, in which case, welp!
Yeah, after some more serious experimentation, I'm really thinking I need to totally remake how Wilder works in my game.

Most characters do about 40-70 to the brigands, depending on the skill. With Call of the Wild and precision slice, Wilder can do up to 210 with one hit.

Despite the random nature of the criticals, This kinda does turn him into a one trick pony who does all your damage via that one combo.

Now the question is, what do I replace it with? ...Bah.

EDIT: Oh. I just had a brilliant idea that'll let me keep the combo, but make it less of a game killer, while also making it more reliable. :D Sweet.

Oh. :X Well now I feel silly.
But thank you for finishing and making the commentary. /hug
Liberty, did you have a mostly positive attitude towards any of the games?
Actually, I start off with a hopeful and positive attitude towards each and every one, but after a while some kinda dragged me down and made me frustrated in some ways. That said, each has things I liked and didn't like, so don't think just because I seemed to rage with a few it means I didn't like them at all or found them absolutely horrible. Hell, I really liked the concept of yours and when I LP/J/T keep in mind that I say stuff off the fly - I don't self-edit at all (or much) so the real thoughts are those at the end after the credits roll, and even then, after playing them all, I find some that I played before to be boosted a bit in my mind.

For example, Depression has actually gained a few points IMO since playing others, since I could actually beat enemies as long as I didn't stray too far from my level zone and the battles, whether they killed me or not, were over pretty fast. Also, saving anywhere helped a shit-ton. Thank you. Thank you so much for that.
/me looks back at Depression kinda fondly

Yeah, that aside, I have pulled an all-nighter just to catch up a bit more. I've not uploaded the videos yet, but I've managed to complete Kampong, Nachtheulen and ovnogesl and am pretty far into both Illusions of Loyalty and Seamus. I'll try to finish Seamus tonight, and IoL, though I'm afraid I kinda rage-quit that one after the plant boss... well, I'm going to have to nerf that one.

For the record, I really feel bad about having to nerf some of these games to get past the bosses and beat them. It feels really bad to have to do so and I wince every time I do it, because I know that it's terrible, but for an LJ I can't justify either cutting out whole battles (because there might be lessons in there somewhere), nor having 12 episodes of me trying to get lucky enough to get past a boss. Which is why I edited only superficial things like percentage of hits and the stats a little more evenly.

Even using skills and abusing them I seem to be getting slaughtered and I really think that even on easy mode the bosses would be too hard. Especially one that is made up of three plants that all damage, protect each other, stun, deal huge damage, poison, revives the one that's killed, ups defence, heals all the damage you do in one turn and deals full-party attacks.

It's just too much all at once, especially when you're stuck with just 6 attacks each character and some don't do any damage. I mean, what good is the one that lowers enemy evasion? And if you get constantly stunned so that you die before you can use Wilders' special combo...

Yeah, there's just a little bit too much and no leeway for doing the wrong attack or just plain bad luck. You can say I'm bitching but I guess I expect a little more lenience in accidentally doing something wrong. Even on hard mode. Oh god, Rhyme's game is gonna slaughter me, isn't it? >.<;

Well, back to the grind (no pun intended).

can't make a bad game if you don't finish any games

I would just like to point out that you seem to be -terrified- of using MP. Even in games where the mage regenerates MP (DD) or where you get plentiful MP restoration.
I'm used to games where MP is limited. I've been burned, man. I've been burned. That said, I'm endeavouring to use MP in certain games like DD (my latest play has me using it all~) and IoL, though I find most of the MP skills aren't that great in that game.

I mean, the one I'm currently playing - Seamus - has me using MP... that doesn't regen so I'm getting into trouble with it. ;.;

See, I loosened up my MP usage and now it burns me. :<

I don't remember being told I could regen it in DD or IoL, but I might have been distracted at the time (or accidentally pressed the button). Perhaps highlighting it if it were mentioned would be a neat idea, so it stands out in text? (There's a lot of information text in DD)

But yeah, most people are trained not to use it just in case they need it later. I guess I'm the opposite of item hoarders - the MP hoarder. >.<;
Well, I didn't mean it like you're a bitter player, or that you hate everything or that you're overnegative. It's just that if you complain a lot about the games just because complaining is a habit (or because that's what you set out to do as a judge), that's fine. I was just asking to know your standards for comparison. It would worry me if you had cursed some games so much while blindly loving some others.
Liberty's actually the most lenient of the judges or anyone I've seen. She liked games that I found tedious and almost rage quitting. ._.);
AH, you don't need to worry about that. I've actually got numbers and I'm being as fair and unbiased as I can while doing this. For example: The current lead game in my numbers book isn't the one I've clearly enjoyed the most via video. I'm taking care to be a fair judge.

I also take care to make my numbers after at least 10 episodes worth or completion and while still fresh. I have edited some in hindsight due to how they stacked up against other games, but I'm not judging against all the games I've played before, but against the ones in this competition.

Also, remember it's not just my opinion - there's GRS doing his thing too, and we'll sort it out between us with discussions when we've both finished. We've not shared our thoughts with each other about the games as yet, which I think is best. That way neither are persuaded by the others' thoughts and when it comes time to add up and compare... Well, rest assured it'll all work out.

I take being fair very seriously and I'm sure GRS does as well.

@Nessy: Daw~ Sweetie~ ^.^ I'm actually that lenient because I've played some truly horrible games in the past. There was this one which was all 1337 5P34K5 and had two-step encounters and three characters called 'Slade', 'Darkn355' and 'Heavenly Joe'. It was... probably the worst game I ever played... and I played BlockLand, Heir of the King, Final Tear 3 (for 5 hours), Megaman GX and many more.
The only games I didn't beat were the Seamus one and Rhymegame. The Seamus one because I reached a point where I ran out of items and money and the game wouldn't let me leave the area to farm some more, so I was like: "Ugh, I'm not starting all over again". Rhymegame because even with a nice party and full limit gauges, the last boss still manages to debuff me and nuke me to oblivion by taking several turns in a row all of a sudden. <_> ...So yeah, you're up for a world of pain, Liberty!

Also, I was playing Illusions of Loyalty earlier today just for fun and giggles and OMG I got a Spellblade sword or something! I could have swore this game didn't have any item drops. Or at least I never got anything cool that I would have noticed. And now that I have already beaten the game, I get a better sword than the one I had before... Such is my luck. xP
Uh oh, I had wrapped up two games because I thought I had reached a point where it was impossible to progress. Now I need to go back and give them another shot just to make sure.
