Description

What're We Cooking?

A full game cooked up in two weeks (and a weekend)! The cookoff begins on February 1st and wraps up on February 17th where all games must be submitted before the end of the day. Check the event page (and your account's timezone) to see when the event ends in your local time.

The Kitchen Suite

The tool of choice is RPG Maker VX Ace Lite! It is the free but feature limited version of RPG Maker VX Ace. The restrictions of Ace Lite are as follows:

Maximum Database Entries
  • 10 Actors
  • 10 Classes
  • 126 Skills
  • 16 Items
  • 60 Weapons
  • 60 Armors
  • 30 Enemies
  • 30 Troops
  • 25 States
  • 110 Animations
  • 4 Tilesets
  • 10 Common events
  • 100 Switches
  • 100 Variables
  • There are no other database restrictions

Map & Event Limitations
  • 20 Maps
  • 10 Events per map
  • Call Common Event is disabled

Script Limitations
  • The script editor is disabled.
  • The 'Script' event command is disabled. Other script commands in Assign Variable, Condition Branch, and Move Event are still enabled.

These are strictly implementation restrictions that you are free to work around. Need more than sixteen items? Make your key items weapons nobody can equip! Want more than ten playable characters? Perhaps when one leaves the party you could overwrite its name and stats with your new character! Twenty five troops too limiting? Make a troop that adds random enemies via battle events!

Please note: While it is possible to add your own scripts to a game through devious means the spirit of the Ace Lite restriction rules in this contest. Injecting scripts is not allowed beyond using the enabled script calls for their intended purposes. Of course changing the database caps through other means is also right out. Any game found violating these restrictions will be disqualified.

You can download RPG Maker VX Ace Lite here.

If you want to see what you can do under such restrictions Deckiller has made a game in Ace Lite called Kolmesarta. Feel free to check it out!

Your Ingredients!

Everything in the kitchen is allowed! There is no theme to the cook off besides obeying the restrictions of Ace Lite. There are no resource limitations for this contest as Ace Lite does not restrict what you can import into your game. Whip out the spice rack! Prepare the vegetables! Go hog wild! It's a free for all!

Nobody wants a half baked morsel though. The only requirement beyond using RPG Maker VX Ace Lite is that the game must be complete. Only finished games are wanted here!

For the Tastiest of Them All

We've got four judges reuniting to sample the delicacies of all participants: The RTP Princess Liberty, The Amazing Artist Nessiah, the Makerscore Master Deckiller, and the Ludicrously Lazy GreatRedSpirit! Their number one game will received a boxed copy of RPG Maker VX Ace generously donated by Liberty! The lead developer of the winning game will be contacted by Liberty to make shipping arrangements.

That isn't the only prize though! After submissions are closed there will also be a two week voting phase for all members of RMN to vote for their favorite game! Voting will be open from February 18th to March 11th. The winner will receive their choice of any item excluding RPG Maker VX Ace from the RPGMakerWeb.com store courtesy of RPGMakerWeb!

There is always the achievement badge for participating too! One of a kind will not be made available again! Submit to that completionist tingle and take part!

Be inspired by poking fun at judges. That helps your chances of winning, I think? People like games involving them genderbending people and hoarding pies, yes? D:
Hey, thanks community for the tips...
My game is up for submission approval... I beat it in just over 5 hours myself in the play-test, that said I knew where everything was and used the 'god mode' walk through walls thing... 3 side quests, 4 major towns, whole slew of dungeons...

Can't wait to see what people think!!

*cracks knuckles* Well then, looks like we're gonna be rivals then. I'll give your game a spin when you've got it uploaded, I'm curious. (upload it asap, BTW, the uploading process takes a good half hour. At least, it did for me).

But I think you beat me in terms of sheer content alone. My game is about 3 hours long, has no side quests and 3 small towns, each with the exact same inn and shop, but with different NPCs.

All I've really got going for me are the great story and the good bosses.

If I can write a paper an hour before class with no outlines, drafts, and half the assigned book read, and still get a B. Then I can do this!

Or not. This is honestly harder.
I believe I'm done!
Since I have until tomorrow, I'll test the game a bit/lot.
Well, my buddies have not emailed me about any more bugs...

Guess it's time to officially submit the game to the actual contest. Here goes 2 weeks! :D

My game started off pretty basic, same way... I had a vague idea that I wanted to use a bunch of the pre-loaded maps to hash something together. A few days in I realized that there was a wicked cool vampire castle and it kind of took the theme for the last 1/3 of the game or so... All three vehicles are in there (boat, ship, airship). There is a simple crafting system (won't give away spoiler on for what), several optional bosses, two optional dungeons...

The main selling point for me, though, was the character randomization. I really wanted to tackle that this time around, so the party was different every game, based on the answers to your questions, but without you getting to just go to the character selection screen. Some parties seem to be way more difficult than others (I wound up with main character as a ninja, as well as a secondary character ninja, for example, and diced up monsters like no tomorrow) but by the end of the game you have 6 characters to choose from, so it evens out.

Storyline may prove the winner of the day, though, and mine does start off a little slow...

Edit: "Deception" Uploaded!

2nd Edit: Upon testing, I found that I had left the Airship start point near the beginning of the game. This will be remedied in the "Deception (Fixed)" Download.

:o You have randomized characters based on player answers? You have all three vehicles in the game? ...*curls into fetal position* I feel so small now...

It's only the third game I've made on here, so I'm sure there will be mistakes and stuff... For instance, as we speak, I am uploading my third post-testing download (two headed dragon had 1250 hp instead of 12500). This one will be final though...

And as for the random characters, I can try to post something about that later, like tomorrow or something ;)

So, last night I said my game was finished. It was. So I went to bed, and started going over it mentally. I started thinking about some of its issues, and I came up with two questions that helped me get a much better look at the game as a whole:

Do all of its elements have a function?
Are all of the necessary elements present?

Trying to answer that, I noticed my game had a few unnecessary fillers (even with all the VXACELite restrictions!), and that it had some problems that could be fixed with additional elements. I made a few simple adjustments, and I feel the game is much better and polished now. I'm even thinking about writing an article on RMN about that. :D

Interesting how that works... I had the same feeling at one point... can never have too many hidden 'potions' in vases or treasure chests if you have left over events...
Finished our game, me and Seiromem's, and gamepage is pending, ready to set up the game download as well. Already thinking of how I want to revise the game and add more to it once the competition is over, in RPG Maker VXACE. Some things in our game were meant to have more to it, but, then again, maybe it'll be better without those details. Either way, we've got our entry done!

You can do it in the editor in the 'game' drop down on the top of the page.
Also, you can do it in-game... I am not sure if this option makes it launch in full screen every time though...
