Description

What're We Cooking?

A full game cooked up in two weeks (and a weekend)! The cookoff begins on February 1st and wraps up on February 17th where all games must be submitted before the end of the day. Check the event page (and your account's timezone) to see when the event ends in your local time.

The Kitchen Suite

The tool of choice is RPG Maker VX Ace Lite! It is the free but feature limited version of RPG Maker VX Ace. The restrictions of Ace Lite are as follows:

Maximum Database Entries
  • 10 Actors
  • 10 Classes
  • 126 Skills
  • 16 Items
  • 60 Weapons
  • 60 Armors
  • 30 Enemies
  • 30 Troops
  • 25 States
  • 110 Animations
  • 4 Tilesets
  • 10 Common events
  • 100 Switches
  • 100 Variables
  • There are no other database restrictions

Map & Event Limitations
  • 20 Maps
  • 10 Events per map
  • Call Common Event is disabled

Script Limitations
  • The script editor is disabled.
  • The 'Script' event command is disabled. Other script commands in Assign Variable, Condition Branch, and Move Event are still enabled.

These are strictly implementation restrictions that you are free to work around. Need more than sixteen items? Make your key items weapons nobody can equip! Want more than ten playable characters? Perhaps when one leaves the party you could overwrite its name and stats with your new character! Twenty five troops too limiting? Make a troop that adds random enemies via battle events!

Please note: While it is possible to add your own scripts to a game through devious means the spirit of the Ace Lite restriction rules in this contest. Injecting scripts is not allowed beyond using the enabled script calls for their intended purposes. Of course changing the database caps through other means is also right out. Any game found violating these restrictions will be disqualified.

You can download RPG Maker VX Ace Lite here.

If you want to see what you can do under such restrictions Deckiller has made a game in Ace Lite called Kolmesarta. Feel free to check it out!

Your Ingredients!

Everything in the kitchen is allowed! There is no theme to the cook off besides obeying the restrictions of Ace Lite. There are no resource limitations for this contest as Ace Lite does not restrict what you can import into your game. Whip out the spice rack! Prepare the vegetables! Go hog wild! It's a free for all!

Nobody wants a half baked morsel though. The only requirement beyond using RPG Maker VX Ace Lite is that the game must be complete. Only finished games are wanted here!

For the Tastiest of Them All

We've got four judges reuniting to sample the delicacies of all participants: The RTP Princess Liberty, The Amazing Artist Nessiah, the Makerscore Master Deckiller, and the Ludicrously Lazy GreatRedSpirit! Their number one game will received a boxed copy of RPG Maker VX Ace generously donated by Liberty! The lead developer of the winning game will be contacted by Liberty to make shipping arrangements.

That isn't the only prize though! After submissions are closed there will also be a two week voting phase for all members of RMN to vote for their favorite game! Voting will be open from February 18th to March 11th. The winner will receive their choice of any item excluding RPG Maker VX Ace from the RPGMakerWeb.com store courtesy of RPGMakerWeb!

There is always the achievement badge for participating too! One of a kind will not be made available again! Submit to that completionist tingle and take part!

Ooh, a podcast? Frightening! Does that mean you guys will talk about all the games made for the Cookoff and RSW?
w-why is it frightening o.0

that sounds like it would be pretty cool, hopefully they will, even if only briefly about each =)
Well, the podcast is just for the RSW, were just gonna give a shout-out/announcement of the winner for the Cook-off (otherwise it would never end).

Don't worry, Zetsu, podcasts are a pretty random occurrence.

So umm...What's everyone been up to? xD

Exams, finally getting around to Mass Effect 3...and I started working for the summer. x_x Have to get up so early....

I've only got to upload the videos I have. So, basically, I've finished judging. Now GRS and I have to talk it out but due to our timezones, it's a little difficult. We're probably gonna aim for an official announcement during the podcast.

0_0 You're done?! Oh wow.

*crosses fingers you actually made it to the end of my game*

I haven't played any of the Mass Effect games yet, but I hear they're quite good so planning to do so sometime in the nearest future =)

Looking forward to this podcast thingy ^-^!

It does not disappoint :D

(thanks for enduring, Liberty!)

So cruel. I'll try to get some of the others up within the next week.
Well, given that the judging is still taking a long time and that I'm now thoroughly convinced I won't be winning (my competition is way too good, and I know for a fact I'm not getting Liberty's vote given how I literally made her ragequit), I've decided the hell with it, I'm installing the full version of RMVXAce.

I'm pretty much at the limit of what I can do in Lite, and I still have lots to add and fix for the large update/fix I'm making.

Let me know when I'm allowed to update my game again, plz. :)
Go ahead and update, get the two week version off and replace it with something more polished! (and less Lite, I never want to see the Ace default battle system again after this)

(Sorry for the horrid delay its taking to get this done)

I tried to event a side-view battle system... but it took too long and I didn't get the game in on time for this event. :O
Roger that. Time to install....There we go.

Ahhh.......So wonderful to have more than 10 events per map. Time to put some hints in for the easier modes. And more NPCs. And maybe some more skills if I feel like it.

I thought about removing the random encounters for patrolling enemies...Meh, maybe if I can find a good Line of Sight script.

Oh, and a few more bosses, just for funsies.

It's more a result of the default Ace battle system being awful and the Lite restriction of no scripts. There wasn't time to try and event a whole new one* that would immediately be obsolete when using not-AceLite. Plus you'd have to work double time to get a game that used said battle system to be more than a tech demo. Some of my qualms are aggravating but not major. Things like "what states does an enemy have again?" or "oops I was speeding up the text and missed the damage dealt" or "was that a resistance or just defense?". I am thankful for being able to page between characters in the equipment screen. Some games work to address these issues but the ideal solution just isn't possible without scripting.

It's an issue exclusive to the Cook Off as there aren't any such restrictions in our "make a game with X theme" events.

(* mind, my concept of time has been horrible. I wasn't expecting the caliber of some of the submitted games)

e: destroying evidence of me making a post, making a change before posting, and not realizing it was in the wrong place entirely
My gosh...Scripts are so awesome. My battle system is now a million percent more clear! :D

How did I ever do without them?!
Well it took forever and a half but judging is complete! The top two games of the RPG Maker VX Ace Lite Cook Off as selected by our crack team of judges (Liberty and myself) are...

In second place is... from the lands of Ryūhō...
Dragon's Descendents by LouisCypher, Craze, and Karsuman!

And our grand prize winner is a slide from the Arum Universe...
The Grumpy Knight and the Crisis in Helena's Kingdom by Formar, Indra, and Scinaya!

Congratulations to our winners and thank you all for participating and enduring the long judging period! I'll be posting my collected notes for the games to give my feedback once they are all organized. Liberty's post here has a link to her Let's Judge videos that she has uploaded so far. You can also check out her Youtube channel for the very latest. Achievements will be distributed shortly! Again thank you very much and we hope you'll participate in the next RPGMaker.net game development event!
Congratulations to both Fomar and Indrah on their win! Let me know where to send the boxed copy via PM.

Also to LouisCyphre, Craze and Karsuman for coming in second!

I'll try to put up the last of the videos some time this week. To everyone that participated in the event, congratulations. You all accomplished something that many people have trouble doing - completing a game. All of you should feel proud of that accomplishment and hopefully we've all learned a thing or two about game creation, coming out of this contest with more than we went in. Even if you didn't win a prize, you're all winners at the game of creating.
Good luck on your future game making, guys!

Yeeeey! :D

To celebrate we're revamping Grumpy, btw! Swing by in a couple days for the new version with some new content such as: equipment, a new boss, a new playable character, new game+ mechanic, and online achievements! (And prob more stuff I'm forgetting at the moment)
(Also more imporantly we're porting it to normal Ace and getting rid of the Ace limitations ><)
Heh, saw this coming. :P Congrats guys, you deserved it.

Glad you hear you're revamping the game too. I'll definitely check it out.
Since I had already updated my contest game, can I delete my contest version now and leave only the updated version?
