Description

Hello one and all and welcome to RMN's 9th (official ;p ) birthday! Woo!

Our beloved site is now (over) 9 years old - that's practically ancient in internet years! So let's get together and celebrate in the best way we know how!

Making games! :DDD

A bit over a week or so ago a topic was put up with a bunch of event ideas for the community to pick from. There were a few long-runners who seemed likely to win, a really good idea that Liberty will be stealing appropriating for a future event and a dark horse coming up from behind to steal the win.

There was drama, conflict, confusion - just a normal day on the site, really, but we eventually got there and this is it. Your chosen event.

The event in question is quite simple.

3 hours.

3 maps.

3 characters.

You start over the coming weekend, make your game and at the end, share what you have made with the community! It's easy as 1, 2, 3!

The rules are as follows:
- Event starts at midnight GMT on Friday (please adjust your site time to your timezone so that the event page will tell you the start/end times properly).
- You have 3 hours over the course of the weekend to completely make the game. That means 3 hours of development, folks, not a 3 hour long game!
- You must only have 3 whole characters in the game. This includes Player Characters or NPCs. 3 total. For example: you can have a Warrior, Princess and King; or Warrior, Black Mage, White Mage. That part is up to you.
- You may only have 3 maps total.
- All games must be added to the event page by the end of the event (Sunday Midnight GMT)
- Play games over Monday (which is actually the birthday date oops but let's celebrate then by sharing each others' games! :DDD )

!!!SUPER CHALLENGE!!!
If you feel like 333 is too easy, how about completing this Super Challenge? You will get a special badge~!
- 3 different monsters only
- 3 different skills only
- 3 different items only
- 3 different weapons only
- 3 different armours only
- 3 of these major challenges: 3 Message Boxes, 3 Pictures, 3 Scripts, 3 Sound Effects, 3 Window Skins, 3 Musical Tunes, 3 Word Title, 3 Battles, 3x3 Map Size (if not RM, 99x99 pixels works too)

(Note that for this challenge to have been met you must have 3 of these things - it won't count if you only have, say, 2 monsters in the game or only 1 item. There MUST be 3.)

There are two achievements up for grabs!

P-P-PARTY ANIMAL for participating and getting into the spirit of the birthday.
SUPER PARTY ANIMAL for completing the Super Challenge.

Here's the Stream of all the games:

Liberty? Here's the project folder of what i did.

I didn't touch it or export it via the program, i just took it from the projects folder as-is. Please open it in rpg2k3 if you're still interested in playtesting it.

Thanks.
So I requested to resumbit my game, but in the meantime I have a download link;

- I like the equips names.
- Man, my first battle, enemies took way too long to beat, too much HP I think.
- While not really your fault, the skill "Order" wastes a lot of time when used.
- The accept sound is really high pitch.
- There should be less battles on the first map since they take too long and they're all: attack > Salt > attack or Spice.
- The game seems competent enough, I just feel the battles need something to make them less boring. I would decrease the enemy HP and make them more of a threat (stronger attacks), this way battles would be faster, I'd also decrease the amount of enemies you have to fight on each map.
- LOL left-overs boss battle, creative! :)
- For some reason the boss battle lags for me, it may be the engine.
- Music was well chosen for each situation.
- The only thing I feel would need tweaks is the battle system, I beat the game and didn't need to use even 1 item, I used the same strategy for all battles (it's the one I mentioned above).
- But other than that it's a rather polished event game, no bugs or issues, and had a weird story :P

Thanks for playing! Well the "polished" is probably helped by the almost total lack of moving parts.

Also a big thanks to Liberty for playing the games! I've enjoyed watching the streams. The games all looked pretty entertaining.
Event page is currently open for edits to games.

Also put up the three-part stream on the page.

Very odd. It opened just fine in the engine but even trying to playtest it ended up with infinite errors. I might try moving it to a brand new project to see if that helps at all but geez. >.<;

EDIT: Did a bit of digging. It seems like your lbd file is corrupted. Copied all the files over one-by-one and that was the one producing the result. That's all the database stuff, iirc. I tried adding 200 to each of the database sizes, gave the main character a face and checked stuff but I can't find the issue. What I'd recommend is making a new project, copying everything but the lbd file over, then refilling in the database and seeing if that fixes it.
Some reviews - all very entertaining so far:

@Epic Jackman's - Cake Quest: I laughed out loud several times while playing this game. The monsters made me laugh, the music made me laugh, the dialogue made me laugh - a spot on bit of both parody of the genre and I fine little adventure at the same time that was just right in terms of length. The one thing that almost had me turn off the game (because I thought it was broken) was the EPIC slowness of the old man's walk over to start the game. For some reason I could open and close the menu while he was making his way over to me, which made me think you must have implemented some alternate keyboard setup, and I just didn't know how to control the main character - I almost turned it off, but thought - holy shit, maybe this is just an insanely slow moving intro movie, and it was. Anyhow, hat is off - well played - congrats on your first finish - this was delightful. Maybe also ditch the stock character portraits next time and have a whole world full of squiggle people? (and squiggle maps too?)

@Combee - Everything Goes Swimmingly: holy shit. Also laughed out loud at the end of this one. Really enjoyed the lack of 'menu' options, immediately put me in a different 'genre' (sub?) of game, and let me not worry about equipping swords for my fish. Great maps too. Would have been +1 if the key and rock were something even more fishy, but that actually sort of worked for me in terms of building the wacky charm of this world (which ended in the sort of reunion that you might expect to find in a land that's apex intellect is a goldfish). Awesome. The Fairie in the title screen threw me a little.

@Frogge - Birthday Murder Party ALSO had me laughing and laughing. Dear god people. The dialogue quality was SO BAD (by design) that you had basically NO IDEA what was happening, and the framing intentionally kept other scenes in focus (where the characters were still standing around), which made this like some kind of abstract Plan 9 from Outer Space of RPG horror games. Well Played - fun times.

@aquaricorn - The Colosseum: a well balanced trio of fights culminating in a boss fight. Both playable characters had something to do in every moment of the all three fights - felt like the third character (the arena master?) was forced in a bit, but otherwise a very straightforward battle game that gave you just what it said it would.

@Kloe - She Had Fun: So Did I! This was an enjoyably silly, self-aware monster-grinder/romantic-comedy. Particularly liked the expanded interpretation of the 3x3 map (the first couple maps are actually 3x3, with the third being 3x3 usable tiles and a frame around it – stuck with the restriction but played with it, which is always worth more points in my book). The labels on the character resources were fun but I Could Not figure out what one of them did (the blue one) – and, as has been said by other reviewers, Harold’s Green Gauge skill was expensive but Way Worse than his basic attack (and it nearly always missed for me) – this made me love Yanfly’s ‘add sanity to RMMV’s accuracy calculations’ Plugin more than I ever did before (or, it turns out, you put the dodge rate for your monsters up to 30%! Sadistic!). This was actually the first game I played out of the lot (and was a great intro to the games in this event).

@Tevak - Crucible of the Arclord: There was some mood-setting poetics and lots of emotional intraparty content at the top of this, which was a bit hard to follow – we could have used a foil among the three protagonists to call out the hand-wringing that the other two were doing (and unpack it a bit more for the audience), but I imagine this had about as much editing as my ‘script had (í.e., none) – so happy to give it a pass. The maps were Terrifyingly huge, and while I liked the visible encounters, for some reason my rig had terrible lag whenever a fight started, so I avoided them, and was then instantly wiped out when I finally got inside the Crucible and met up with the Fourth Monster type.

EDIT: @Liberty (thank you for your help, below) - I'll try 7zip to crack open the games I had trouble with and get the rest reviewed as soon as I'm able!
I'm sorry, but just today got to fix my internet connection. It just happened to not work the very day I wished it to. Dx

@orochii: I was very sad this only lasted for thirty seconds, it's a fun style (although apparently time consuming)
I think I messed up with time distribution for things. And probably I took too many limitations. Aside from the Super Challenge (from which I used 6 instead of 3 extra limitations), my idea was to use only 3 colors, have only three character sets, and I think there were more things I self-imposed xD. So yeah, maybe I will revisit that minimalistic design. But forget about limits! Sky is the only limit!

Orochii - Old Gun Dreamland: wanted Japanese RTP? (Please add an RTP version)
Oh! Yeah! I think I know what happened... Someone called like myself forgot about adding the RGSS library. Silly me! Sorry "orz... I'll fix it ASAP! Just let me get my gloves...

EDIT: I think I can't do fixes anymore ;_;. But thing is what's missing is the RGSS102J.dll, if you open, save and close the game in RMXP it will update the library used. Sorry for the inconveniences...
@ethanz: Try getting 7zip (free download). Those files are basically just zip files like normal, just need a tool to unzip. 7zip pretty much covers all of em.

@orochii: The page is currently open for edits, so you can replace your current download with the fixed one now, if you like.
Ah! Now I get it, had to delete the download first xD, okay done.

Good work, Liberty!
I finally got to watch the third part of your stream and I watched carefully as my game was present. It seemed to be more balanced, than it is to say the truth.
You credited me as Super Stroke, who I'm not. It's cool name, but I would prefer Super Stoker. Stroke's game is called Time Travelers Three.

Graphics were indeed taken fem DE and his cancelled project Akropolis. They were later a basis for RMN chain game. In its case however he has more chipsets than in the original map pack, which was DE's giveaway. Dudesoft's thread is finely structured in case someone plans on a new chain game. 'McDonald game' was turning out great from my playing and it was only bad it had been ended premature.

Edit: I hope, I managed to fulfill the super challenge's rules.

Okay, I think I've downloaded all the games from this event now. Might want to make a double-check on that, because, Darigaaz, there's a ton of games here!

*Edit: I am slow-bad at this.

*Edit2 - the Feedbackening:
Into the Dungeon
Either it's just me, of the Def-buff doesn't actually do anything. Also, is it even possible to win the first fight? Even with attacking with the STR-buff as often as possible (as far as I can tell, this is the best avenue of attacking), I couldn't fell the Dark Armor, and it gives me a standard Game Over when I loose.

Thou Art Hero
This was a cute little game, if a bit on the grindy side. Kinda love the minimal sentances/conversations here.

Dethgrynd's Krazy Castle
Darigaaz, this game is so hilarious.
Does the XP Axe grant additional EXP while equipped? Or would that be too much?
Aside: I swear, I read "ARMORE" as "AMOUR". Cross-references ahoy!

The Big Meanie in the Tower
I had a really awkward experience with this. The first enemy's sprite seemed to disappear at some point during my fight with it. Then, during the second fight, I F12-reset the game when I realized I was on "Active" mode. I re-fought the first monster again, and noticed it wasn't acting at all. I wasn't typically hitting it either with normal attacks either (why waste MP?). That battle eventually ended with what I assume was the monster running away, since the sprite disappeared on me again, and I don't think either of my characters hit that round (What the hell is the accuracy on these guys!?). Except I still got an item off of the monster?
Yeah, awkward.

Lobster Quest Deluxe!
Now here's a goofy fetch-quest that I can mostly get behind. Am I the worst kind of person for exploring a bit before talking to the Lobster King? Probably!

Thanks for the feedback! And to be fully honest, the arena master guy definitely was added in last-minute; three hours is a lot less time than I'd thought. But yeah!
Also, thanks to Liberty as well! The streams were fun to watch and all the games were great!
Thanks Liberty for streaming everyone's games. Feeling like the bunny in punkkit's game right now- (OMG SHE LIKED IT AHHHHHHH.) Anyway sorry for no sprite animation... or battles... or places to spend your gold. 3 hours goes by really fast, and the three map limit meant no maps for pub/ inn/ etc.

More Feedback for today:

Last Hope

- Nice splash screen and title screen, great use of colors and type font.
- Great atmosphere.
- Some sound effects (jump, menu) could be better chosen, since they break the atmosphere a bit by being so RTP generic.
- She makes step sounds! <3
- I can't read the letter if I'm standing north of it?
- For some reason the music stopped playing after a while in the first room.
- Text box graphics look great.
- Detailed small scale mapping, it looks really good!
- Is there a reason for the menu to show level and HP? I'm guessing you couldn't take them out?
- A bug, after I went into the basement, I read the letter and then walked left and then right and the letters appeared again and I was able to examine them again.
- I thought the bee sting excuse was lame :P
- When you leave the house, you can see every division for a brief moment.
- Great music selection!
- I guess there was no music inside the house on purpose so the dramatic effect when we left was greater. Nope, the village music also stopped after playing once :/
- I can walk over some stuff (i.e.: bucket) in the village, which I shouldn't.
- Is there anything to do in village at all? Or is it just a "corridor" for the next map?
- The foliage image in the village was a nice touch, as was the fog.
- Oh, so the shadow can kill you.
- Too bad it ends abruptly, but hey, 3 hours...
- This was quite an enjoyable little atmospheric game :)

Birthday - by Mirak

- WTF title screen! :P
- I can walk around during cutscenes.
- Nice music selection, specially the battle.
- I love your battle charset. Really, really good, all sorts of cool animations when doing stuff.
- Mapping could be even more detailed, but it's good enough as it is.
- Some fun dialog tidbits.
- The battle background could match the map.
- Liked how you keep referencing the time running out.
- Liked how we die in the last battle :P
- Liked the ending.
- Quite a bit of swearing.
- Trippy, fun little game :D

SPEED WEED

- DLC LOCKED :D
- Is the guy running backwards? Moonwalking.
- LOL at this game, good one.
- All the "boss" talk reminds me of Percy.
- Like how the ending flies by too fast to read!
- He looks kinda like the dude.
- Nice little weird and fun game.

Lobster Quest Deluxe!

- /%(!W2f8xv8z8F"(/%&$%&f XCVBFTUF||!!?????? WHY!?
- This is seriously WTF.
- I like the music selection, for obvious reasons.
- The ending pic was also nice, in a WTF way, which I guess is the point of the game.
- I feel like you started making the game and just wrote anything that popped into your head :P
- Lobsters are one of the few animals that mate for life - according to Phoebe Buffay.
- Also, I like dogs, they ARE great heroes.

Lunge, Reposte, Fleche!

- Nice music.
- I like how you managed to flesh out each characters traits in so little time!
- Socky rules.
- Like the little 3x3 maps and how Socky jumps the lenth of a ship to board his enemy.
- So I can fish coats forever?
- I enjoyed the rock, paper, scissors gameplay.
- Charming little game with fun battles and nice story.

Magical Star Dome

- You've heard this before, but... graphics = cute :P
- Like the music, but it doesn't loop properly.
- Why don't the characters start equipped?
- Like the item descriptions.
- There's some graphical overlapping between the characters and some tiles.
- I can walk all over the stars in the first map, should I be able to do that?
- The dialog is fun, specially the crush Nerbun has on Quail.
- The battles are way too easy and don't take much advantage of the skills and gameplay provided by the program.
- I was actually surprised that Quail also felt attracted to Nerbun, since in reality, chances of that happening are usually slim.
- All in all a cute game in both graphics and dialog, but battle gameplay (while not being the point) could improve.

Old Gun Dreamland - Can't get it to work :/

Into The Dungeon!

- I can go back, despite having the exit blocked.
- The mapping looks good. I like the light effects.
- Man, the first battle drags on forever, the enemy has way too much HP. Invigorate doesn't make much of a change to ATK in this fight, and everything else I can use is defensive so it won't end the battle quicker.
- The second battle is over quicker, but the enemy still has too much HP, this time around, Invigorate is worth using.
- Another thing about these battles is that they take long and are non-threatening since they attack for little damage.
- A good way to do this would be to have the hero have less HP at start and level up 1 level per battle, raising his HP, and scalling enemy attack to be threatening enough for the HP limit the hero had. And make the battles faster by reducing enemy HP.
- What's the point of using V-Cut Strike when a normal attack is much stronger? :/
- That mage has one mean physical attack! LOL
- I like the Final Fantasy Mystic Quest look of the battles.
- I would expect the last boss to have a lot of HP, I'm not complaining about that one. Also he can potentially kill the hero.
- I beat Nercon/Necron (his name is different in battle and outside of battle :P ) and then nothing happens :/
Not gonna try again because of how long it took to beat.
I think it may have someting to do with the fact you can move during cutscenes, hero get's locked in place trying to move to an impossible place.
What happened during the ending?
- Apart from the ending issue and slow battles, this is a nice little game with good presentation.

Random Birthday Adventure

- I really like how cute these 3x3 games look.
- All main chars have a 3 character name limit, smart ;)
- Each has 1 skill, also nice.
- I like how each tile we step has an event, and these are random!
- I didn't know I could grind on the first map... so I didn't. Argh.
- For a time there I felt like I could die anytime, until I got some power. I like the balancing on this, not too easy but not too hard.
- Are there tiles with better chances to get some events, or all all the same?
- The nonsensical story grew on me, but that could've been because I was having too much fun with the gameplay.
- Final boss managed to kill my healer twice, but I eventually offed him. Good challenge.
- I loved your game, dewd! Fun, addicting gameplay with a pinch of randomness & a silly story :)

Benevolence

- Starting music is nice, Vampire battle music is awful, the rest of the music is nice.
- The intro is too slow, the text is slow and it drags for a long time.
- Why do I have to press "ENTER" several times to skip a text box?
- Battled a Vampire, he had too much HP, the battle took a bit too long.
- Only using attack for all the battles gets boring quick.
- I understand this game deals with something very personal to you, but I'd like to say that "confusing other people into seeing your point" will lead to more lies and deception, for they won't see your point, not really, they will think they see it for they are confused. You seem to want to get rid of the lies, so confusing others is not the way to go. Those are different things.
- The ending was pretty WTF.

ARGH! Is there no ending to these games!?!?
