Description

So in another co-event with RMW, our sister-site, we're throwing a review jam! That's right, dust off your typin' fingers and get down to boogie!

The usual information:
= This is an event, so no actual prizes bar badges!
= Post your reviews on RMN or RMW. If you post a review on RMW, make sure to link it back here in the comment section!
= You have until the date ends to write as many reviews as possible!
= Reviews on RMW will only count if they meet the same standards as on RMN, meaning at least 300 words, with decent writing craft involved (spelling, grammar, punctuation. Liberty will be checking those over.)
= The more reviews you write, the better the rewards!
= This event ends on the 21st of April! Make sure you have your reviews added to this page by then! (To add to this page click on the Submit link at the top, pick the review in question and add it!)

Oh, what's that? Rewards?~
= You will gain one badge every time you hit a level of review amounts.
= Each badge by themselves will award 30MS (bar the first level, which is 10).
= The last badge will net you 75 MS by itself.
= If you review any of the games that were released for the RPG Maker Birthday event, you will get a separate badge worth 30MS, in addition to any other badges you accumulate!

1 review = Harold Badge
4 reviews = Eric Badge
8 reviews = Ralph Badge
12 reviews = Arshes Badge
16 reviews = Zack Badge
20 reviews = Alex Badge
25+ reviews = Fess Badge
At least 1 birthday game review = Alexis Badge

Prizes!
Yes, as with the RMN Birthday event, there are prizes for this one too! Three lucky people from here or RMW (who is also holding this event!) will manage to net themselves a voucher for the DLC of their choice up to a certain amount. How does it work?

Each voucher cost is locked at a set amount of reviews. Each review you write puts your name in the drawing hat!

$10 prize - 1 to 5 reviews written will put your name in this drawing
$15 prize - 6 to 11 reviews written will put your name in this drawing
$20 prize - 12 or more reviews written will put your name in this drawing

You can find a list of the birthday games here:

Analytic approaches are great as long as you're not doing it to just one part of the game you didn't like, or if you're not being an asshole about it.

not more people who cut others' games into pieces and dissect them in order to pull them down just because they can, revelling in all the things they personally think are wrong with the game without giving consideration to others feelings.

not more people who cut others' games into pieces and dissect them
Personally, I enjoy dissecting games and analyzing their mechanics. I dig as deep as possible to isolate the elements I like or dislike and explain why I like or dislike them. When people review my games, I carefully read the reasons why they like and dislike the various elements of the game. The why is what matters the most to me.

Is there something wrong with this dissection approach?

It's only a problem when some people tend to dissect and cut out only a part of the game that's bad, and narrowly focus on that, instead of looking at the overall game as a whole. Ironically, you also dissected that quote from the complete sentence above, which put it a bit out of context. =P

Some reviewers just write bad reviews like they're trying to put on a whitty spectacle. Some focus a lot on a single part or aspect that they didn't like or felt frustrated with, or just like to nitpick on everything that's slightly wrong, without talking about what's right. It's natural because people like to talk about their own experiences, and the negative ones tend to stand out. But personally, I think it's important as a reviewer to balance out your own experiences with other things, such as looking at the overall game as a whole, providing useful info for readers to decide if the game is right for them, and taking the creator's feelings into account.

These reviewers are not critical at all. I mean, we might have too many high rated games now. Where's sated when we need him?

well, i'm not sure if i'm critical enough in giving the reviews, but i did my best to put all the details that i experienced while playing the game in my reviews. most of the games that i played for this event are also short games so there's not much that i can put in there.

I also believe if you go for a 4.5 or above there should be a wall of text telling you why.(unless the game is super short) And there should always be a section of criticism. It only makes the praise matter more. Reviews are to help the dev grow and help them go on the right direction.
i'm not really good in giving a wall of text though so i usually give the reason in the summary. but yeah, i agree on the criticism part. if there are some things that can be improved, it needs to be said on the review too.

anyway, thanks for the event!
Libs said everything I wanted to say. I truly believe in the art of criticizing to improve, not to punish.

Not really. There is such thing as learning to write reviews without being a jerk. You can give critique without being critical. You can give feedback without instigating a fight. You can give your thoughts about a game without shitting all over it or making disparaging remarks just for the sake of tearing it to shreds.

Critique couched in a way that aims to pull up instead of cut down is best and what I'd personally like to see more of - not more people who cut others' games into pieces and dissect them in order to pull them down just because they can, revelling in all the things they personally think are wrong with the game without giving consideration to others feelings.

Of course, pandering to the creator and telling them their game is the best thing ever and has no issues when there definitely ARE issues is dumb too. Be at least a bit realistic. No game is perfect and acting as though every game you play is a precious little snowflake who shouldn't be touched by critique of any kind does no favours to the developer - they need to know what mistakes they made, what they should look at changing or fixing, what issues exist - else they won't push themselves to get better. To stop pushing is to grow stagnant.

Honey and stick, people. Honey and stick. Balance it out with a bit of the good, a bit of the bad. "This was pretty neat and I liked this thing, but you could fix this up to be a bit better and this aspect is pretty unbalanced, which is a pity because it could be really interesting if you get it balanced well."

Reviews here prepare you for Steam reviews if you go commercial. Nothing compares with receiving a Steam review. RMN is the gateway to growing a backbone.

I try not to write negative or critical reviews on someone's project, but instead I looked to report on what aspects I liked about their games. If I found problems or there were gameplay issues I tend to put those in the spoiler tags. I've seen some harsh reviews before and while they CAN spur a developer to go back and fix problems, I think more than likely those developers leave and we never see them again.

Infinitely butthurt because when one of his reviews crossed the line from critical into vindictive, he couldn't handle getting called on his bullshit.

Edit: And yes, I'm still butthurt over the way he acted towards literally everyone the last time I was in a conversation involving him.
Yay!! Thanks for the badges!! xDD ^_^ :) Wish I reached ti'll FES though, but reaching ti'll Zack is still amazing!! XD :)

Alexis is different... it's not a ranked badge but a separate one. That said, I'm gonna change that now.

Remember the time when all achievements were 30MS,
This info is still incorrect:

Each badge by themselves will award 30MS (bar the first level, which is 10).

Should say,

"Each badge by themselves will award 30MS (bar the first two levels.)"

Alexis Badge only gives 20MS.

or

"Just read how much each badge is yourself on the right side of the screen."

Badges are out. The prizes might take a week or two, since we're dependant on outside of site stuff for them, but they'll be along. I'll keep you guys updated!

As always, if I missed your name for a certain badge, send me a PM!

Oh, thanks!

Did we have to submit them to the event before the event deadline? I thought you meant we just had to submit to the queue in time, which is why I did it at the last minute =P

So, I've managed to do an even 20 before the end of this event. Just have to wait for them to be approved. Soli, I'm holding you to that promise that we'll be able to submit them even after the event!
