Description

RPG Maker VX Ace is OUT and we want to see what RMN can do with this new tool! The Nugget Crash Course is a competition for new Ace users to make a game to try and win a copy of RPG Maker VX Ace, courtesy of our friends at Degica (the company that markets and distributes RPG Maker outside of Japan)!

RPG Maker VX Ace is aptly named as it is RPG Maker VX {Insert Incremental Reference Here}. Imagine your regular VX with various changes and upgrades all over the place to make it a better tool all-round. The best way to see what the changes are is to download the Ace trial and give it a spin! You might even get your own copy out of it!

This is a fast and loose competition with a new tool and so will the theme. Simply make a game with RPG Maker VX Ace! It must be a new Ace game started with the English version so no carry overs from the Japanese release / trial. You can use any resources for Ace such as graphics, music, and scripts but I don't want to see any Ace-rized versions of your VX game.

Ace can handle any graphic, sound, or music VX can and more so all resources for VX are available. Ace also has a new feature of being able to create character and face graphics through putting premade templates together directly in the program. One critical difference between VX and Ace is the script backend got rewritten Ace which means a large majority of scripts for VX won't work for Ace. You can check the script repository on RMN for several scripts made to work with Ace.

Having trouble with Ace? There's a few places where you can try to get some help. Posting on the event itself is allowed but it's easy to lose track of such questions. You can post questions in RMN's Help & Request forum as long as you read the forum rules. You can also head onto RMN's IRC channel to try and get some real time assistance there too.

Judging will be handled by GreatRedSpirit, Archeia_Nessiah, Liberty, and Deckiller. After all the judges have played the games they will rank the games by their own preference. When a game is listed as 1st, 2nd, or 3rd the game gets 7, 5, or 3 points respectively. The game with the most points wins!

The dev lead for the game that scored the most points will be awarded a new Ace product key! We only have one key so teams will have to fight to the death against each other decide who gets the key. We'll also have achievements: The top prize achievement for the 1st place team, runner up achievements for the 2nd and 3rd teams, and participation achievements for everybody who participated.

Important Update! Our prize has been donated to us from our friends at Degica and RPG Maker Web:

I wanted to tell Kentona first, but the dude totally JUMPED OUT THE WINDOW WHEN I WAS TRYING TO TALK TO HIM. (Ok, not really, he just left the irc channel), but I'm just too happy not to want to announce it myself.

For people who don't know, I'm Nick Palmer, I work managing the official RPG Maker English site's(RPGMakerWeb.com) blog, Facebook, Twitter, Forum, and well, a billion other hats involved in RM Marketing.

Anyway, we at Degica (the company that markets and distributes RPG Maker outside of Japan) want to show appreciation to RMN for being such a great fan community for our products. As such, we will be supplying the Medal of Honor prize copy of RPG Maker VX Ace.
This is a great boon to RMN! Thank you Touchfuzzy, and thanks Degica! Your support of RMN is apprciated.

You get half a month starting when Ace is released until the end of April 1st giving two weeks and a weekend to create your game. There is some leeway in situations where game breaking bugs are found by the judges after the 1st and the devs will be allowed to fix these bugs.

Damnit RMN. y u keep timing out?
...and now all those Lps I recorded are stuffed. Welp.

And just so you know, I won't be doing full reviews for all the games. I'll have a thing or two to say about each, but only full reviews for the three winners. If later I feel like adding more, then I will, but that'll be as a normal RMNer. As a judge, just the top three winners.

I know the rest of the judges agree that it's far too much work to do a review for each one. It's not in our judging description. In fact, we were originally only going to give points to our top three and add up, but we've expanded it a bit, so be thankful for what you get~ :P

It's funny, I don't even check my notices anymore because I know it's going to be "Nugget Crash Course new post by ????" haha. I should still try finish my entry before my trial runs out, even though I missed out on this.

4) The Only One Left - Really liked the party invite and world map systems, even though I generally dislike not being able to explore towns and such.

Gasp and hooray! Thanks for putting me in your top 5!
Sorry about the towns.. well, they're not even towns, but sorry about the shopping areas being so small. I was super worried about getting all of the dungeons/monsters/etc. right before towns and things became a priority. Also, I felt if they were any bigger, players would have to trudge around the entire town before actually finding the shop they wanted. Maybe I'll put in some secret areas with treasure/NPC contact. :P

Thanks for the mini-review, though! And thanks again for the top 5!

Holy crap, people are actually rating Steve? XD

To be honest, I didn't think it would get much of a look-in. I had intended to do a proper game but considering the quality of some of the other entries I accepted that I would never win and just tried to ramp up the humour as much as possible.

I'm glad my wacky sense of randomness makes up for my lack of everything else! :D

(also regardless of competition outcome I will probably develop Steve into a full game at some point)
I haven't tried it yet, but from what I've heard, it's something to look forward to.

To Save A Land - Didn't like it. Felt too generic. I also dislike the Wizardry-style "no town" town list thing. Buttttt that's just me.

I'm glad you tried the game, though you can at least sort of check out the town and later towns feel more explory since there's some outdoor areas. Usually I'm also a big fan of exploring towns but this time I thought I'd try something a little different. :D

I'll admit I haven't played Wizardry before, so... XP

Um, about feeling too generic. Could you give an example, perhaps? I'm wondering just what I'd need to change to make it less so, but your comment doesn't give me much to go by. The battles were not that generic, I hope, and I thought I'd done the writing pretty well. I mean, there's not much back-story there, but they do have character. Maybe that's what you meant. I'll definitely be working on expanding the characterisation in the full version.

Uchioniko - I liked it. Wish it were longer though.

If "I wish it were longer" is the only thing you have against it, I'm doing okay!
Keep in mind that just because I didn't like something about your game, doesn't mean that others will feel the same. It doesn't mean you've done something wrong or anything. It's always good to do something a bit different. I'm just more of an exploring/plot type.

That being said...

*replays To Save/Heal A Land*... I'll give a better review this time (was just trying to keep comments shortened since there were so many).

The mapping is really good. There's a NPC in House 1 that changes sprites when talking to him. Not sure if that was intentional but figured I'd point it out, just in case. The characters and NPCs are fine, as far as the writing goes. Better than most and I can tell that each one has a distinct personality. Maybe I shouldn't have used the term generic so loosely in that particular instance. My apologies. Better wording would be... yeah, you need some back-story. At the very start it's just - we're going to this cave to meet this faerie to heal your curse. Aside from character personalities, that's really it for the story. I'm sure there's more to it that comes 'after' what is playable in the demo, but with what is there now it isn't really much. Just *plop* 'Now play.'

I think, for me, this is one of those games that you have to play through more than once to start liking it (Ex: FFX) because for the 2nd play-through, I actually ended up liked it. I'm sure that once it's complete that I'll end up liking it more. Just, like I said, there isn't much substance to it yet.

If "I wish it were longer" is the only thing you have against it, I'm doing okay!

Yeah, I liked the characters, themes, mapping... pretty much everything. The only downfall was the length, which is understandable considering time restraints and it being a contest and all; but your game did end up #6 on my list (Yeah... I had most of them actually ranked, just decided to go with top 5 x.x).
6/21 done. I feel like I already did a lot but apparently not!
Thanks Acrypt for replaying, replying and pointing out what you meant. I'll check out that sprite change - I didn't notice it at all!
That said, yeah, there'll be a bit more backstory to the group. I kinda didn't want to start people off with a ton of story because I tend to get a bit caught up in it and make 10-20 minute long intros. ^.^;
As it stands, you learn more about the curse and the characters through playable flashbacks and some extra scenes I'm adding to certain places. It'll still be plonk and play but with more story thrown at you here and there.

:D
Derp... I made an oops... Last night, I eliminated my contest entry from the game page. ^^; Consolation download now available - < v. 1.7 >

Next time I won't be so hasty to shed a download...
After some lunchtime organization I have calculated the play through rate for the submissions is at 30%!

Feel free to share your full ranking!
Someone may have to give the judges my 1.6 version of Silent Eyes... I'm on to 1.8 now, and that I don't plan on releasing until next week as the FINAL Silent Eyes 1.
I already downloaded all the games before hand. If any of the judges needs a copy of one of the games, they know they can hit me up for the official contest entries. This means the ones that have all the warts and trappings.

it there a clear date for the winner will be announced?
