Description

Some of you might not know what a Release Something! Day (RS!D) is. Basically, it's a day where you release something - anything! - in order to get feedback from the community.

Release Something! Days used to be a regularly occurring events back when the community had a problem with releasing stuff. It was created as a way to encourage sharing, collaboration, feedback, and content in the community. The aim is to truly try to capture the spirit of releasing something.

It is not about prepping a major release, or making something in a fury to have something new to show for the event. It is about showing your works-in-progress, getting feedback, and checking out what other people are working on. Like a snapshot of RMN's development community.

WHATTA RELEASING?
Music, tiles, sprites, graphics of any type, gameplay (videos of gameplay tests are good), tech demos, demos - even completed games (but don't strive for a finished product; that's not the point of RS!D).

GOTTA HAVE RULES
- To 'Release Something' just upload it straight to this event page. Sign in/up, then hit 'Submit' in the top right corner of the page and browse until you find the file you want to 'Release'. Voila~
- You can release more than one thing, but try to make sure it's something you've been working on at least recently (say, in the last month or so). Keep it relevant!
- Release all through the weekend.
- DO NOT steal the things you see here, if someone wants feedback on a resource or script. I doubt we have to say it, but it's worth saying just in case someone uses the 'but you never said...' shit to justify being a fuckwit.
- To give feedback, use @username and then hide tags (depending on length and amount of feedbacks in post. So, for example:

@Liberty
[hide]this page is pretty awesome but hey, I think you need to work on your logo making abilities because holy shit giiiiirl[/hide]

GOTTA GET GOODIES
There will be a badge worth 10 MS for releasing something. One per person.
Best feedback givers will also get a badge worth 20 MS. Because the feedback is what counts most!

Just to re-iterate: You are releasing something :ANYTHING: that you have done on your project over the last month or two. It can be a screenshot, a face image, planned dialogue, a script snippit, a resource, a demo (if you have one on hand) or a video of a system or anything like that. It does not have to be something that you whip up over this weekend - in fact, it's HIGHLY ENCOURAGED that you NOT do that! Just dump something in! Or a few somethings!

GO GO GO GO GO GO GOTTA GO FASTER!!!!

@Liberty = Milla looks like she has been punched in one eye.

@Pizza = Reminds me of RedWall books when I was a kid.

@Cyberlous = Title Screen. Don't know if there is a grammatical difference between begin and proceed.
Milla is a certain someone who grew up. Some might recognise her. Though I should probably rework that hair a little so that it's not next to her eye like that. Hm... Any thoughts on which of her stances are best?
@Pizza Thanks for the honest feedback!

None of that is ripped, haha. I'm going for a simple old school vibe. I kinda copied styles of what some of those games did with, like have the walls be filled with the pillar thingies to make it seem less flat overall while being extremely simple. All the stuff is what I built from scratch though.

About the battle. I did not work long on the background yet, it's more of a "test". I highly considered making it pitch black, but right now I'm trying to go for a simple monochrome version of outside that's mostly black. The enemy position I still have yet to experiment much with as well. Still trying to find the right position haha.

@Piano Thanks! The lack of floor in this case is only for this area, as I wanted a feeling of darkness to be convoyed haha. I have not played Ultima. I'd be a poser if I said I was that old school.

@Red_Nova I do intend the floor to be darkness, but I don't want total void to the point people think I forgot to put the tiles in haha. I think I'll just make a normal style floor for it to avoid confusion. A lighter shade of grey miiiiight help what I am going for however. Will try.
@Liberty
I say the top left one. Though you could push it a bit further by making her lean on one foot.

Also, the walls look flat for me. Or maybe it's the floor? I don't know. In the milla_test image, the walls looks more like a carpeted extension of the wooden floor.

@Red_Nova
My only complaint is that the gold window is *just* slightly not the same width as the Drives window. Maybe extend the category window a bit to the right, adjust the gold window accordingly, then abbreviate 'Marks' into 'Mk'?

Yeah, I'm a bit oc. Sorry xp

@Punkitt
The sands look a bit barren, imo. Maybe add some small dunes or more plants/rocks? Otherwise, it looks great!

@Unity
Compared to the first battle animation set, the second one looks bland and uninteresting.

The battlers, on the other hand, deserve no praise less than ABSOLUTELY AWESOME :D

@Ocean
Those are gorgeous, I must say! Though I'm a bit concerned that the icons may just pop out too much when put with the rest of the map. Maybe tone down the neon pinks a bit?

The sprite reminds me of a pokemon trainer. Dunno if you'll find that flattering or not.
Figured I'd post some feedback on the stuff that's been submitted so far. Although I won't be downloading any projects yet. Just looking at pretty pictures while listening to submitted music.

@J-Man
I like it. Always good to see custom graphics and you animated them pretty well. You also seemed to have nailed the feel of some old-school JRPGs. Nice stuff!

@Ocean
Really impressive spritework here! Those overworld icons remind me a lot of Legend Of Mana. They really pop out! Not surprising as you seem to have a knack for custom sprites.

@Liberty
Ooh neat. I've always been a fan of sprites in this style. Milla looks like a badass. Looking forward to anything else on this project!

@eplipswich
Kindergarten the RPG? I can dig it. Interesting looking game to be sure. Hope to see more of it.

@Dyhalto
Interesting exposition there. Seems like a unique setting. Cool.

@InfectionFiles
That's the Mythos Horror Pack or one of the others out there right? I always felt like that style got a bad rap. Good to see someone making use of it. I like the screen shots. I'd play it.

@SgtMettool
You're the guy that made Brave Hero Yuusha right? Nice to see you're sticking with that style. It's a very cute and unique look reminiscent of the old-school. Awesome stuff. The faces are adorable as well! Bravo sir.

@kory_toombs
Looks really neat! It reminds me of Fire Emblem a bit though I haven't played a RPG Maker game that got that type of battle system to work right. Hoping this game will be the exception to that. I'll have to keep my eye on this title.

@Pizza
Is this a gritty reboot of "An American Tail"? Heh. Nah, this looks great! I like the sketch for the rat guy. And damn, that is a really pretty set of sprites! Dang. Giving me Mother 3 flashbacks. I like it!

@Red_Nova
Well that is indeed a shop menu. Fancy. This is for Prayer of the Faithless right? Still need to try that demo. Looking good though!

@unity
Yyyyyeess! Custom battle animations! They're always so neglected I find so it's awesome to see them like this! Also those enemies are so unique and crazy I love them. Definitely going to check out this game you're working on. I mean...damn.

@pianotm
These are pretty nice tracks. Though, they all seem to have the same...what's-it-called...tempo? Beat? Accompaniment? That background sound you know. I guess some more variety there would help? Really great stuff though!

@Kylaila
Lol buttheart. These look pretty good though! Looks like an interesting group of monsters. It'll be cool to see what they look like colored in and all that.

@karins_soulkeeper
Oh so it auto generates parameter and element rate changes on the equip screen? That's pretty cool. Saves room in descriptions for descriptions the way it should be. Props to you.

@zDS
Wow. Now that is some old-school feel right there. Channeling the original Final Fantasy in that tileset. Looks neat!

@Zero3D
Whoa. Those are some funky colors. Not sure how well they work together though. Looks like an action-based battle system. Looks like an interesting project.

@CYBERLOUS
Interesting setting you have this project. I like the music you provided. It's not bad. Hope to hear more about this game in the future.

@AceOfAces
Not going to be downloading anything yet so I can't look at the files you submitted but I like that title screen.

@Punkitt
Ooh. Custom art. Me likey. Looks like an interesting environment and that main character is adorable. Color me intrigued.

@Thunder176
Cool. Looks like your standard fantasy RPG. That minecart ride would not be fun! Don't see any issues with the mapping for the most part. Neat stuff.

Not bad guys. Not bad at all.

@Liberty
To me, the walls look fine...and they look like walls. Milla successfully puts forth a very gritty feeling of a well worn detective. That's what I think she is: a detective. And yeah, she does look like she has a black eye. I do rather like the hand on hip stance.

@eplipswich
Well, this looks cute, and the music sounds perfect for it.

@InfectionFiles
Oof! And the grimdark images continue! This one promises some violence.

@kory_toombs
It's been awhile since I've played a tactics game. I'll have to check this one out. The chipset you're using looks familiar, but there are enough differences that I don't want to take a guess.

@dinkledaberry
A police game! Interesting! Is that the DS graphics pack or something you've created?

@karins_soulkeeper
Once finished, this would be something that could be very useful, especially to someone like me who has a tendency to neglect object descriptions.

@CYBERLOUS
I have to admit, I find your music to be a bit chaotic. Infiltration was the only one I really felt I could understand.

@Punkitt
I don't know why the second image should have better geometry than the first, but overall, I find the art style to be charming, even if I'm not sure why geometric shapes with more or less angles are better than each other.

@Thunder176
The story and the graphics seem fairly common. Meanwhile, the gameplay seems to be what you're spending the most time on. The game is fun, but you've got a glitch in the first trial. It's not game breaking, but if you hit it, you will have to shut down and continue. Those jump ledges? You have some that lead off the map, into waterfalls and into solid wall. No, the fact that you have an impassable tile there will not stop a character from jumping into it, and once you're there, you're trapped.

@dinkledaberry: They're supposed to be the same. They're a themed structure and come from the same game. I've got something different. I'll upload now.
@pianotm
Ah, okay. All related songs. That makes more sense. Love that new piece BTW. When that choir kicks in...hell yeah.

And yup! Detective game. Solve cases and catch badguys. It's the Old School Modern pack that came out awhile back. I've made very minor edits here and there but for the most part that's the look I'm going with. Think it's an underrated pack that I'm hoping to get a whole ten hour-ish game out of. We'll see what happens.
pianotm

Thanks! I'm glad that you enjoyed them!

I feel like I'm taking a risk uploading The Road Less Travelled, now. I only just finished it, and haven't had any time for cleanup.
Thanks dinkledaberry! And I sure do hope it'll be useful, pianotm.

Though, it doesn't really save you room for more descriptions (actually, it even eats up a line!)

@Liberty, pretty cool stuff! Keep up the good work.
@BerryRMN, Nice map, although it's quite big. I think making it a bit smaller would be better.
@AubreyTheBart, for some reason it can't run on my laptop even if I have installed the 2003 RTP. At least the splash screen is neat.
@CYBERLOUS, I dig up on sci-fi stuff. And the artwork is quite nice.
NEW: @Ziegfried, Lousy hit detection, mediocre music and graphics and mindscrews at some points (a fridge can heal you? I get that that the character eats some food, but a bit more context would be nice). And I got stuck somewhere at the 2nd level. And while I haven't encounter any more issues, I think you should port it over to new engines like Unreal Engine 4 (which is free full version and you won't have to pay royalties for freeware games).
author=Red_Nova
@Kylaila: Wow. Those monsters look really cool! I really need to steal you as an artist next chance I get! Also, I want to know the inspiration for Buutheart... but at the same time I'm kinda afraid to know the answer.

That is awesome! Thank you! :)
*chuckle* Good call. Well, I didn't have one inspiration in particular in my mind, I was mostly trying to twist female curves and bodyparts (well, male, too), as well as sexuality in general. And maybe having tentacles added as kind of a theme. Next up are emotions like anger n sadness, and some more on-world enemies.

That one in particular, however, comes in the way it is simplified fairly close to the later Persona games. When I finished sketching it I was like "wow, that could be a persona 3 enemy!". I did a quick pixeled/colored version of it to show my friend how that may look like.

.. more feedback later.
Vaccaria
You'd think MZ would use a dictionary for switches/variables by now?

@unity
The monsters surely fit the title itself.

@dinkledaberry
Maybe I'll play the game... someday

@InfectionFiles
That is extremely nigh af.

@SgtMettool
New gam?
I'll do a bunch of feedback tomorrow when it's likely that everyone (or most) are in.

@karins: This one's more a middle-animation stance, I'll be adding other poses in (including a leaning on one leg one) after I figure out the animation stuff. But as a default pose, I guess top left is the one I was leaning towards.

I don't really see what you mean by the walls blending in to the floor/seeming like part of the floor, though. I mean, walls are supposed to look flat unless they're brick or something like that (these are old wallpapered walls), but I think you might mean the bottom design parts throwing it off? It's not the best screenshot of them in effect, I guess, since it doesn't show the edges at all, and there's no ceiling tile yet, to help sell the illusion a bit better, but maybe another colour of wall would work better. I'll mess with it. Thanks~

@dinkledaberry: Thanks! I'm not too big on the style buuuut it is pretty simple to use and the height of the sprites should lend themselves to more poses pretty easily, too. And yes, Milla is and has always been a bad-ass, even when she was a kid~

@pianotm: Close! She's actually a supernatural journalist, and boy-howdy as she seen some crazy stuff in her life! XD I am glad that she gives off the detective vibe, though, because that's what she's pretending to be... who wants to talk to a journalist, after all? But a detective? Being involved in a real life Sherlock Holmes mystery? That's exciting~

I might work a bit more on the walls anyway, since I'm not too happy with the colour and 'pattern' anyway, but thanks!

@AceofAces: Thanks! I'll keep it up!

Some feedback. I haven't covered everyone though.

@kory: I really don't get why you're trying to mesh chibi RTP-style graphics and those realistic tiles. :/ Your mapping also needs a lot of work. Try shift-clicking the water tiles in the ts2.png screen and expand the 'black ceiling cave tile' so it covers the edges and eliminates those borders. The screens themselves could do with more variety as well. I can understand you're maybe going for a unique look by meshing the two styles together, but it just doesn't gel. And if your project has a serious/dark tone, I highly suggest you ditch the chibis immediately. But that's just my two cents.

@punkitt: While the graphics are simple and cute, I can't make head or tail what's supposed to be going on there. Is the setting of the game supposed to be surreal? Also, I highly doubt you'd find pine trees in a desert area ( if that's what the orange-ish tiles are supposed to represent ). You're better off making cacti sprites and replacing the pine trees with them.

@Infection: I do love how you used those tiles there and while the Cliff screen makes clever use of that parallax, it does appear like an underwater scene ( mainly due to how that particular image was drawn and its monochrome look ), which is probaby what you weren't going for. Maybe a hint of colour here and there could help ( an accent colour like red will really highlight the nature of your game ).

@zDs: It doesn't hurt to have more 8-bit style games around, though I do wish the floor had more texture instead of just being a black void. A few simple white lines drawn in a grid-shape on that single black tile would give an impression of an actual tiled floor. Texture matters a lot in 8-bit games, since you're working with a limited palette. As a rule of thumb, any pixel artist's textures should be recognisable in black and white. I love the battlers though.

@dinkledaberry, Pretty interesting stuff for your game. I wonder why do you need an outfittery (maybe get new armor?). I'd like to play test it when available.
@eplipswich, Hmm, that got my curiosity.
@Thunder176, I like the premise of the game (from what I've played). Although the tutorial could have been more seamless.
@KatanaHorishi, I like the holographic stand. Although the map is too basic...
@Zeigfried, OK then... I guess it makes sense in context. I guess you are trying someting like the magic circle?

So I uploaded a gif of a dragon hurricane.

I want to shoot some prototype platforming/romping footage this week too, so I'll add that too when I get around to it.
