About the Contest

The theme of this contest is scary movies, and creating an adaptation of it in game form. It can be an RPG, a platformer - any kind of game genre. The main goal of this contest is to see how well you can transfer a movie into another platform, and whether or not you can “crop” the necessities to make a good short game in a limited amount of time. How “true to the film” you want to be is entirely up to you, though it is preferred that you try and stick to the movie as well as you can, for it will be a category in the judging process. If not, then it is fine too - just be prepapared to possibly suffer some point loss depending on the judge.

Rules
General Rules
* The game must run on Windows XP or higher, the judges should not require any additional components to play your entry.
* Games should contain a text file containing instructions on how to play your game, as well as properly documenting any resources you used!
* Games started before the start time are frowned upon.
* Entries must be submitted before the deadline to be accepted.
* Extensions will be granted only in truly exceptional circumstances. If extensions are given they will apply to all participants.
* Your movie must be on this list of Horror films from IMDB: http://www.imdb.com/genre/horror. If it isn't, you will definitely be losing points.
* No games that are made from movies that are made from games (Resident Evil, Silent Hill, etc.).
* Your game can be made in any engine and can be of any genre, not just an RPG.
* Although this is a competition, you are expected to show proper sportsmanlike conduct to your competitors. Trash talking and the like will be frowned upon.
* Most important rule: Have fun!

Judging
The categories for judging will be: visual appearance, audio, interface, game play, tasteful adaptation score, and overall impressions. This is pretty general, however the one category that is different from other contests is how close to the movie is your game or "Tasteful Adaptation". It is entirely up to you if you want to make a scene-to-scene adaption, or just draw thematic influences from a horror movie film. Just beware this category! :)

I know this is late...

If anyone uh, needs me for anything on their team, shoot me an e-mail, an AIM, or hit me up on my site. I'm not checking RMN with any frequency these days, but I wouldn't mind contributing to somebody's project.

If you can make graphics, as in a background...

You could always just finish your game for the contest, then worry about gamepages.

Paranormal Activity? Anyone wanna help?
*Sigh*
I'll drop out.
How do I do that?
Unfortunately I just haven't had the time for this contest this month, nor the drive. Perhaps I'll still make a Parasite Eve Zero game in the future though, it'd be a fun game to make a new battle system for.

Yeah, count me out too. I will finish this on my own time. Having some trouble in my relationship, so haven't had much time to tinker in RM.

I thought long and hard on which movie to adapt, however in the end I came to a conclusion that what you're asking the participants of is to create what is essentially a fan game. And I hate fan games.

Making an event revolving around fan games was a stupid idea. You should've just thrown us a keyword and told to make a horror game which somehow incorporated that keyword or concept; a game based on an original story, not some lame movie script adaptation.

Once again - fan games suck.
idk fan games are only stupid if you're essentially making a game based off of a game (which is pretty redundant). It's more interesting with a movie/book because the gameplay style could be anything if you're creative enough.

And yet it is expected of the participants to create a game which is as faithful to the source material as possible. Where's the creativity in that, story- and character-wise? That you have to come up with your own gameplay mechanics is obvious, since there are none in movies. But apart from that it's mostly copy-pastying stuff - characters, names, heck, even whole scenes! In my book that is not fun.

I guess there are people that have enjoyed or will enjoy that, but I wish this event was more about promoting original content (once again, I'm talking about the script, not mechanics).
What Darken said,

Also, the last paragraph says that it's entirely up to you if you want to do a scene-by-scene adaptation or not. If you want, I'm sure you can make a game based on some ideas/characters from a movie, but still incorporate a few of your own ideas well.
I'm outta this. Codeword: forma c
