Description

Hey, Pisanos! In honor of RMN’s official Mario Month, We're bringing back the Mario-making spirit in the form of a level-design contest in the Super Mario Bros. X engine!

… Come again? You heard me right! We’re not really making a collaborative game this time around. This is a CONTEST to see who can make the best level in SMBX! The winner will receive lucrative prize of ANY GAME OF YOUR CHOICE ON STEAM UNDER $20.00, in addition to a nice achievement and makerscore!

Regardless of placement, each level submitted will be compiled into a custom-made SMBX game where everyone will be able to play and view feedback from our four judges: Isrieri, Deckiller, Halibabica, and your host, Ratty 524!

OKIE-DOKIE! WHAT ARE THE DETAILS?
As mentioned before, this is a CONTEST to see who can create the best mario-focused level, using any style of your choice. In light of this, we do have a few ground rules:

  • Hopefully this is a given for most of you, but the level you submit must be made in Super Mario Bros. X, either version 1.3 or 1.3.0.1 (The only differences are in some graphic edits and sound). You can download the latest version of the engine HERE.

  • Each participant is allowed to submit ONE level for the contest. No more, no less. You CAN submit a replacement to your submission, however, but you must indicate which level is the one to be judged somehow.

  • Your level should be built around the vanilla version of SMBX. This means NO HACKS/LUA CODE to modify your level beyond what the engine is already capable of. We want to keep this a fair competition, after all, and trust me, we'll know a hacked level when we see it.

  • Your levels must be built around Mario and Luigi ONLY. Yes, we’re aware that Peach, Toad, and even Link are playable characters in the engine, but it makes the judge’s job easier to compare levels that are built around characters with similar mechanics, so there we go! This also means that the character blocks (the ones that allow you to switch between characters in a single level) are banned.

  • With that said, all the other NPCs, exits, tiles and whatnot are NOT BANNED! Go ham! Keep in mind, however, that your use of these elements will be judged, and that some NPCs are known to be buggy (such as the SMW Bowser Statue) or bring unwelcome challenges to them (SMW Dry Bones for its hitbox, and SMB3 Lakitu for its spamming of homing spikeballs). Depending on how severe their impact is, your level CAN be docked points for its abuse of poorly-functioning NPCs. You've been warned.

  • Please make sure that all the files needed to make your level function are included with your submission, if applicable, before the deadline. If you plan on using custom graphics or audio, for instance, include that in your submission. In addition, we expect that all your sound/graphic paths to be correct. Getting a level that doesn’t play its music right won’t get you disqualified, but it may cost you a chance at winning.

  • Failure to abide by these guidelines may result in your level being disqualified or docked in points.

POINTS, EH!? WHAT-A-POINTS?
Glad you asked! We judges will use a 1-10 rating system for judging each level in this contest; a score of "1" in any category will be the lowest, representing an area your level functions poorly in, and "10" is the highest, showing an area the level does well in. Here is the criteria you should be considering for your submission, It’ll also be the criteria we judges will use to rate your levels:

  • DESIGN:
    - How deliberate does the level feel with its choices, such as platform or pipe placements?
    - What is the theme or overall concept of this level, and do the level’s elements work well with it?
  • AESTHETICS:
    - How cohesive/nice are the graphics used in the level? What visual themes contribute to creating a distinctive atmosphere in the level, and do they work well?
    - Is the audio used in the level appropriate, and how well does that contribute to creating an atmosphere/emotion in the level?
  • PLAYABILITY:
    - Does the level contain bugs or poor design decisions that hinder the way a player can play the level?
    - Is the level’s difficulty challenging in a way that is fair and not obtuse. Could the level, hypothetically, be beatable on the player’s first try, without the reliance on trial-and-error?

The final score of a level will be averaged between judges, with your final score being a total of the ratings in each category. The level with the highest total, obviously, will win. Aim for 10/10 levels in all categories, folks!

Really? Aw shucks, the quiz eventing was the only thing i was happy about haha.
I wanted to avoid making it an insta-kill if you got a question wrong but i couldn't figure out how to reset the events once you failed.

You could have bullet bills fire from the side if you got a question wrong perhaps? The level doesn't give you anything other than mushrooms anyway so it would be impossible to dodge them.

Some of us have been using SMBX for years. Don't feel bad if your levels don't stack up to the veterans' on your first try. It took a lot of practice for some folks to get where they are.

Case in point, my first level with this engine was an incohesive mess filled with random homing koopas, invisible blocks, a potentially unwinnable situation and bad jokes. We all sucked before we got good.

I would have more makerscore If I did things.

And have you seen some of my levels in Rmn Bros 3?

Let me tell y'all about the RMN Bros 1 hub world!
?

e: oh, it's probably looking for the youtube.com in the url and doesn't recognize the youtu.be name. Using the url with youtube.com in it makes it work.

thanks for doing it for me.. :D
I have an idea for a story for this, well not so much a story but rather just some fun interaction. Maybe have toad, Link and Peach somewhere in the hub world explaining the history of the community SMBX games. Like when they started, who participated, time taken to make them or whatever comes to mind. I just think something like that would be neat.

RMN World kind of already did that, with Pyth. I don't think it needs much in terms of storytelling other than "the four judges ripping apart some levels people made"

By the way, there are 3 MORE DAYS 'till the end of this event! I will NOT accept late submissions!

Will people be able to play the levels unhindered by any comment blocks you guys might add as well? Or how does the judging work?

I've updated Journey to the Sky Fortress. I did not shorten the level because I really didn't want to mess with My First SMBX Level that much more, but I did add another warp that lets you skip a decent amount of the second part. Also, I tried to find all the spots where breaking blocks would make the level unbeatable and put wood blocks there.

I didn't use sizeable blocks because I just couldn't figure out where they would look decent.

I haven't totally solidified it yet, but the way it'll work is that in a HUB world, there are rooms filled with entrances to the levels submitted. Beside those entrances are blocks that, when hit, will display the scores the level received (respective to each category, as said in the event page), and also display blurbs from the judges that give commentary on the level; you could feasibly view the feedback before playing the actual level.

Also, to clarify, I plan on the winner and scores to be made public before the compiled project is released, to save everyone time.
Top favorite levels so far based on music:
1. Ebon-flow Cave
2. The Lost City
3. City Blues
4. Forest Manor
5. Waterfall Heights
6. Reading Rainbow
Updated my level, changed around a few things too. The boss battle isn't long and has been shortened down to three hits its dead.

lonestarluigi: That was a pretty good level, though honestly I enjoyed the city part more than the building. I think the level would have been better if you had just stuck with that. There were also some tile errors, especially with the road tiles.

Yeah I realized that, but that's more on the graphics them-self, its meant for more road like. But I didn't want to make a straight line, so I tried to make it look like a broken up road. I wanted to originally stick with the outside part, but due to that reason I had to do something else for the level.

Bowser's Troop Attacks Mario
+Good mechanics. I like the fireball + volcano lotus. One causes you to position yourself and one makes you time jumps.
-Either change the background or change the color of the climbable fence in the first section. It's really difficult to see. Or, use the edge pieces of the climbable fence.
-Some enemies placed incorrectly (podoboos, the jumping fireballs, should be inside the lava not above.)
-Some graphics errors (the door at the end is set as a pipe warp)
-too many powerups. Unless you land in some lava, you can just run through the level and just use power ups to give you an extra hit. Give the player only one power up and not a selection. No leaf. It lets you skip the end very easily.
-Too many enemies/filler enemies. The Banzai bills don't add much. If you do keep them in the first section, add a platform that the player can get to by bouncing across them. That's what I was really hoping for there when I tried to bounce on them. The line of Rex's and koopas doesn't really add anything either. A small bit of more fire oriented platforming here would be nice. Line of thwomps over spikes can be spin-jumped over, create a ceiling directly over the thwomps to fix this. The boss at the end was unnecessary. In its current state, the player will always jump over and go straight for the star.
-Needs a checkpoint.

The mechanics are pretty nice in this level. Instead of trying to fill up empty space with random enemies, use a few cleverly placed ones to create some platforming. The lava at the beginning was pretty good. I think you if extended that into the main theme of your level it would be great.

Forest Manor
+Aesthetics creates a "bigger picture"
+Story that isn't terribly cliche
+Good platforming in the water section, although the fishbones seem unavoidable.
-Bad platforming in the hammer bros section. These enemies seem a little out of place in your theme. How about some eeries or boo circles? Maybe instead of fighting boom boom at the end you fight a large boo.
-Red coins not saved by checkpoint. If the player dies even once, they are going to hate this. How about put the quiz and spring section together and have them unlock the p switch and the checkpoint (which would be after the p switch so it would provide progression. You could have the player collecting blue coins at first and red coins later if you want to keep a collection mechanic in your level.
=Some of the jumps are 5 blocks tall, which is doable, but only with a running start. Most notable in the lobby from the lower middle to upper middle.

Overall, this level was very enjoyable. Fortunately I only died at the quiz. Otherwise I might have rage quit. The quiz really isn't that bad as long as it is the first room the player completes. This level takes a lot of risks with it's design and I commend that. It is actually done very well and only needs a little tweaking to provide progression via checkpoint.
