Description

37 years Mario has jumped through hoops, bounced over mountains, trekked through deserts and crushed thousands of fungal opponents in the endless quest to keep the danger-prone princess out of the clutches of one Bowser - everyone has their calling - Mario's just happens to be damsel recovery

But a man's gotta keep things fresh right, between those hikes to the Dark World and back, he's found time to stretch his legs in football, tennis and golf, fancies himself a world-renowned racer and even has a life-sized board game for his own personal R&R time

But in those 37 years, you know what never changes?

The music

Mario appreciates those talented Nintendo composers but after 37 years of video game instrumentals, he's not sure he can take it any more - he's going mad, crazy even. His brother Luigi has enlisted the help of a very strange group of individuals to help Mario out of his rut here

Oddly enough, these strange individuals are us

The green brother has enlisted our help to produce a menagerie of levels with what we consider the best music of our colourful world to bring some variety into his stressed sibling's job

When the event ends, this levels will be compiled into a hub-centered SMBX game and sent to Mario by express mail. As per standard, it will also be downloadable on RMN, because of course it will

- This is an SMBX event, you will need to submit levels created with the SMBX engine, specifically, RMN's classic fav, the SMBX 1.3.0.1 engine (I know there's fancier and arguably better engines out there, but I'm aiming to try and keep this a simple casual event, so we'll stay tried and trusted for now)

- Your level must utilise your favourite song as it's sole and only theme, remixes and alternative versions can be used in conjunction but it must be clear that the songs are obviously related.

- Your level must have a checkpoint, 5 dragon coins and end with a SMB3 star

- Your level must not contain SMW stars or the infamously buggy duo of Unskinned Dry Bones and SMW Bowser Statues, it is possible to get textures for dry bones that avoid being buggy and SMB3 Bowser Statues work much better

- Take this from the man himself, there is nothing worse than trying to guess "Am I allowed to swim in THIS water?" Water must be swimmable and waterfalls must be decorative

- All characters must be able to clear a level unless a level is made with a specific character in mind, then you must make sure the player is definitely that character before they begin the main meat of the level

- Avoid pesky softlocks, there should be no situation where you are still alive and yet unable to progress

- Try to avoid one-block high dead end gaps, this causes SMBX's infamous zipping trick and can cause some unwanted effects

- Luigi would like to remind you that the Mario Bros. are generally a U-rated brand and while he will grant some slack, if a song is too vulgar, he will kindly request you to either find a less vulgar or censored version or in extreme cases may ask you to use a different song. if you're not sure, leave a link in the event comments and he'll let you know

- The level must have Luigi of Mushroom Kingdom's Seal of Approval. The level will be judged and feedback provided in order to make sure there is a consistent level of quality, once all feedback has been taken care of - the level will be accepted

- There will be a strict one level at a time rule, you will be allowed to make another level (presumably with your second favourite song and so on) upon the acceptance of the previous

- And finally do not begin work on your level until the event's official start date: November 10th

I've submitted a revised version of Feel Invincible called Feel_Invincible_v11.zip (it was actually v1.1 but apparently RMN's file system doesn't like extra periods). Here are the changes:

  • As requested, reduced the amount of enemies in the rainbow shell sections to allow only a single 1-up (turns out it takes 9 enemies BTW, not 8).
  • Added a fire flower that only Link can get for the last boss fight (other heroes can use the red Kuribo's Shoe). It does throw the synchronization off a little since the action pauses when Link picks up the flower, but at that point it hardly matters because the only remaining synchronized event is the exit pipe appearing at the end of the song.
  • Fixed an error which allowed warping to the exit early when continuing from the checkpoint.
  • Fixed an error which looped the music at the end when continuing from the checkpoint.
  • Removed the Super Hipster Land music which I dropped in there early on for testing purposes then forgot about (derp).

I've also submitted Electric_Daisy_v01.zip. I haven't heard back from the Sarasaland Adventure 2 dev about the Daisy sprites yet, so for now I'm not including them in the package -- just pretend Peach is Daisy.

I'm working on a magical experience.

Got my custom NPCs ready, now they just need a castle to defend.

All right...I sat down and made the freakin' level. I give you Hocus Pocus. This is the kind of stage where everything goes to shit if you wait around too long. Whether that's fair or not is up to you, I guess. Also, you're welcome in advance for the yodeling.

- The Bowser boss fight can now be easily won as Link (I'll admit, it did not occur to me to mention that it was especially difficult before as Link) by simply camping in the corner and just not shooting when Bowser's fireballs are about to hit him, maybe shove something in there to dissuade the player from such cheeky tactics
- However otherwise, this level is brilliant and is now approved
So unless anybody has some last minute levels to throw in (I do have a level I've been trying to make which I might just about get in before the deadline) we seem to have settled with four levels which makes this quite possibly the quietest SMBX event I've ever seen (cue sad music) but I'll take quality over quantity any day and we certainly have quality here

With such a low turnout, it may be worthwhile to offer an extension to anyone with WIPs right now.

Didn't Bryan and pyro say they wanted to contribute, but were unable to at present? Perhaps you can grant them some leniency as well.

I'll ask Liberty about extending the event to it's original timeframe (which was either December 10th, 11th or 12th, bugger knows which)
Honestly if anyone feels like throwing in some levels post-event (either for my computer wasn't working reasons or I'm just a bit behind on my level reasons) then just message me the level at a later point, I think Bryan got the post but I'll message Pyrodoom myself in case he missed it

EDIT: Wrong on all three accounts, twas actually December 9th the original deadline, something about not clashing with the next event

Well, I hope we can get more in, but I'm afraid I've done all I can. Even just this one tapped me out. I have just a bit much going on to worry about Mario stuff. -.-

EDIT: Just a heads up, I made a very minor edit to Hocus Pocus. It now has SMW kick blocks in the boss room, just to match the style better.
Yeah, I'm working on a level right now which isn't easy. Not to mention still downloading stuff to my laptop to 'return it to its former glory'. Just downloaded a bunch of GFX Packs from the SMBX Forum but seems I'm still missing a few resources that I had once before.

I should still mention that my access to the internet is still limited for the time being.

Decided I'd join in because I need to add in some good music taste to what I assume will be a game that is gonna be 50% garbage anime music and 50% overrated ''classics'' from pre-2000s Seriously though Bohemian Rhapsody is absolute garbage. It's basically absolutely nothing interesting happening for 6 whole minutes. Fucking fight me. I have a song in mind and also an aesthetic to go with it.

Edit: Oh wait, it ends tomorrow. I might as well just submit the incomplete level now and finish it later seeing as I won't have time to finish it otherwise.

Jack's thinking of an extension due to the low turnout, and he could certainly use your level!

Okay. Bohemian Rhapsody is a nonconventional song that tells a dramatic story through lyric instead of refrain. It's more like poetry put to music than a traditional song. You don't have to like it, but don't go bashing it just 'cuz. It's legendary for a reason, but if it's not your taste, don't bother over it.
50% Garbage Anime Music?! Thems fighting words were I come from buddy!
Hocus Pocus by Focus, great song. I have the yodeling part as a ring tone :D

haha I'm not even gonna bite on that Frogge. Too easy. Enlighten us to what you consider good music, please. Unless it's post 2000, then nevermind. It's all garbage.

I would like to make a level for this but I couldn't even tell you when I'd have it done. 2 weeks, next month, who knows. But I probably will make one eventually, either for this or for my own pleasure. Likely something by Rush.

Just send it whenever if you do make it, even if it is very late, could really do with as many levels as we can get my hand on here by looks of things

My dad introduced me to it. I've never heard such a combination of strange and awesome in the same song. Without going into Weird Al territory, at least.

Updated my level per Aubrey's feedback!
I got the PM and, I'll admit, I'm surprised as to how quiet this has been.
If I get my computer back on the third of next month I'm trying my damndest to make a level :P

And the fact that this is a music-based event really makes me want to just jump through space and time to get my computer now, because I'm recognizing none of these songs so far and I want to squeeze in some of my own music taste.
Just keep this open ended for a while. Until there is enough for a decent sized game, even if it's made up of levels from just a few people. You could put a message to PM you levels after the deadline if it can't be altered. (btw, it doesn't show who is running this event anywhere on the page)

How will these levels be assembled in game? We could talk about ideas for it. Liiiiiike, it could be a Music Hall of Fame type hub world with paintings on the wall for each song that you jump in to start. Stars could be reskinned to records. You gotta get 5 platinum records(yoshi coins) haha

Are we having common enemy sprites? Like with the Halloweeen event. Music related goombas, maraca koopas, pipes are speakers with music notes popping up, flying V shaped guitars :)

Hub-wise, my initial plan was to place the levels in segments dedicated to certain genres, however thus far that wouldn't be possible due to receiving a small number of levels of which none have matching genres

Now I am awful at graphics and the only real plan for forced musical sprites was to replace the dragon coins with musical notes, however if anyone who doesn't suck makes anything that makes sense/gives me an idea that even a paint.net newb like me a shot at making it not look awful then I'll take them on board

Also, yes the whole open ended thing is the plan
