Description

This is the second time we've ran the Swap in the Middle with You event. It's a pretty simple premise. You start a game and work on it for two weeks. At the end of that fortnight all the games are pooled and then distributed semi-randomly to each other. Then everyone finishes the games they are given over the two weeks.

Rules
  • Sign up below. Make sure that you're dedicated for the both parts of the event.

  • Games must be new and made only for this event.

  • You may use any RM engine. Sorry, while it is a neat idea in theory to use any engine, most people who sign up might not have experience in those engines, limiting the ability to finish the games. Please point out if you have the legal or non-legal versions of RPG Maker 2000 and 2003! It won't do anyone any good if I hand you a legal version to finish when you only have the non-legal version to work with, after all!

  • If you only have access to a particular RM engine, please note that in the comment section so that I know to account for that when distributing the first half of the games.

  • Also, make sure to include an RTP stand-alone version of the game (and include resources) when passing it over so that your partner is not looking for different files to make it work.

  • When it comes time to submit, for the first half of the game upload the WIP to the event locker (accessed by Submit in the top corner).

  • First halves of games must be in by the time shown under the Details section after you add your time offset in the settings of your account. The Date End reflects this and will be changed when the second halves are handed out.

  • The second halves will be submitable by game page ONLY. Make a game page for your game whenever you like, just remember to update the information when the second creator comes into play.

  • To keep time realistic, aim for each half to have a half-hour of play at the most. This will make an hour-long game, which is pretty decent for a month of work. You can go over this amount, but remember that the longer the game, the less chance there is to finish it.

  • At least 10 minutes of game play time per half!

  • In the spirit of the event, don't be a back-seat driver to the second creators. They can take the game where they like - that's half the fun of the event. In fact, let's just say that you keep your fingers out of the game pie after it gets handed over. Make it something of a surprise, eh?

  • All games must abide by site rules - pared down to 'no hate speech, no highly sexual content, etc'. If you have questions about what is and is not appropriate, PM Liberty and ask.

Creators are allowed to change the content of the first half of the game this time around, in order to make it fit the end half ideas. It's expected so don't be upset if you find your game has changed between sending it off and getting it back! I highly recommend making your first half a fun game that you don't mind morphing into something else, so as to stave off any protective instincts you may have towards the story and ideas.

If it helps people to disassociate themselves a bit from being clingy with their games think of the first half of the event as you making part of a game for someone else - it's not your game, it's theirs. You're just making it for them to mess with. The second half is where you get to make what your get yours.

Remember, we're doing this for fun, guys, and a big part of that is seeing how someone else takes your ideas and makes them into something else. Ideally we'll see games come from this with interesting changes and twists, so don't get attached to the first halves!

that how it works? hope i get lucky, then...
I'm signing up! Unfortunately I only have RM2K (legal version), so that limits my options tremendously. Still, I hope to have lots of fun doing this!

I have no idea what I want to do. I'm in.

I have Ace and MV, but would prefer Ace.
Resources: Anything goes.
I will put that if you're creating stuff for your game, don't start til the start. You can, however, grab a bunch of already-created resources and shove them in a folder so you have your collecting already done. No actual in-engine stuff yet either. Ideas, no script drafts. The usual "don't actually start creating shit til the bell rings" rules.
I have all RPG Maker's but I prefer to work with MV.
Guess I'll give this one another try.

My Engines: RPGMaker 2000, 2003, XP, VX Ace, and MV. (All Legal Steam Versions)

Preference to 2k3 or VX Ace, but I'm not picky.
So this can be any type of game we want?
I am taking the answer to "are we allowed to make endings to our first half if we feel the need to do so" as yes.

Is there a rule against making a page for your first half during the contest?
Is there a rule against making a page for your fist half after the contest?

Anyway I mainly posted to say that looking at the board of who's joined right now, I have a 2/26 chance of getting randomly paired with someone legendary (awesome!), a 7/26 chance of getting randomly paired with someone notable (rad!), around a 100% chance of getting randomly paired with someone interesting (cool), and a 1 in 26 chance of getting randomly paired with someone "interesting".

I don't think you're supposed to make a game pafe for you first half. The person making the second half makes the game page. So you'd make a game page for whoever's game you end up finishing.

I would also advise against giving your half an ending. Or even getting more than the halfway point. It's kinda just asking for trouble if you ask me. Remember that your first half is technically going to belong to the person completing the second half, so I personally recommend just making something simple that you're not going to get attached to or get very tempted to finish.

Can't really tell you what to do though.

If you wanna let the person picking up your half know what they're getting into, why not leave a few comments at the point where it ends? Or make a map and call it ''IMPORTANT'' and place it at the top and have an event with textboxes that gets across the messages you want.

Which do I qualify as?
Now THIS sounds zany. It's gonna be scary to think about how my second half might have completely different ideals/ideas on design, or even a different interpretation on a lot of things. I'm sure that whoever I'll be the second half of is gonna be equally terrified, though. I'm excited.

I have 2000, 2003, XP, VX Ace, and MV.

Frogge said a bunch of stuff.

I don't think that is what he is asking. I pretty sure the question was. After the contest or even on the side if he wanted to take the half he turned in that got another half could he work on it more and finish it.

While I'd say that probably during the contest it would be bad form. I don't see anything that specifically says he can't take the first half base he made and add to it after the contest then release it as it's own thing. Still seems like it might be in bad form though.
This should be, uhhh, interesting! I'm super nervous about doing well with my second half game, but this event sounds like a fun way to kickstart game making again so I can at least try!

I can use:
2K3 (Legal!)
XP (Not much experience though)
VX (But why??)
Ace (Popular?)
MV (Controversial?!)

I'll most likely make my first half with Ace since it seems like a lot of you will be using it as well, but MV would be my second choice.
If, after the event, you want to make a gamepage dedicated to a game that contains your first half being made into a different project, that's fine but I recommend just making a first half that you don't mind sharing with someone else. Again, you can make a different game using it, but why bother when there'll be more events in the future and the idea is to not get attached? XD
Tempted to make the first and last 5 minutes. Some miniboss talking mad crap and then a big black screen that says "OTHER GUYS TEN MINUTES" and when we switch back miniboss is like "OH GOD WHY DID I LOSE SO BAD"
Thanks for the various clarifications and uh...believe me, I'm not going to get overly attached to the first half I'm handing off. I mean, I'm not leaving anyone a pile of shit, I hope, but I'm literally not creating any maps OR any graphics for it so...yeah. Doubt I'll get attached.

Um, honestly, in my own completely subjective opinion which doesn't particular matter, I had you placed within the 100% interesting group. I didn't name names because I did't want to start like, the ego wars, but since you asked...I answered. (I didn't mean to hurt anyone's feelings.)

Can use RPG Maker VX Ace (very proficient, used many times), RPG Maker MV (comfortable, but only used once), or Visual Novel Maker (familiar with basic functions.)

If going second, and someone provides me with a safe link to the illegal engines and RTPs I would be willing to use them. (Never used to make a full game, expect chaos and brimstone.)
