Description

This is the second time we've ran the Swap in the Middle with You event. It's a pretty simple premise. You start a game and work on it for two weeks. At the end of that fortnight all the games are pooled and then distributed semi-randomly to each other. Then everyone finishes the games they are given over the two weeks.

Rules
  • Sign up below. Make sure that you're dedicated for the both parts of the event.

  • Games must be new and made only for this event.

  • You may use any RM engine. Sorry, while it is a neat idea in theory to use any engine, most people who sign up might not have experience in those engines, limiting the ability to finish the games. Please point out if you have the legal or non-legal versions of RPG Maker 2000 and 2003! It won't do anyone any good if I hand you a legal version to finish when you only have the non-legal version to work with, after all!

  • If you only have access to a particular RM engine, please note that in the comment section so that I know to account for that when distributing the first half of the games.

  • Also, make sure to include an RTP stand-alone version of the game (and include resources) when passing it over so that your partner is not looking for different files to make it work.

  • When it comes time to submit, for the first half of the game upload the WIP to the event locker (accessed by Submit in the top corner).

  • First halves of games must be in by the time shown under the Details section after you add your time offset in the settings of your account. The Date End reflects this and will be changed when the second halves are handed out.

  • The second halves will be submitable by game page ONLY. Make a game page for your game whenever you like, just remember to update the information when the second creator comes into play.

  • To keep time realistic, aim for each half to have a half-hour of play at the most. This will make an hour-long game, which is pretty decent for a month of work. You can go over this amount, but remember that the longer the game, the less chance there is to finish it.

  • At least 10 minutes of game play time per half!

  • In the spirit of the event, don't be a back-seat driver to the second creators. They can take the game where they like - that's half the fun of the event. In fact, let's just say that you keep your fingers out of the game pie after it gets handed over. Make it something of a surprise, eh?

  • All games must abide by site rules - pared down to 'no hate speech, no highly sexual content, etc'. If you have questions about what is and is not appropriate, PM Liberty and ask.

Achievements?
As always, there's badges to consider~
Started in the Middle with You, Too - 50MS - Received at the end of the event for those who started a game and had it completed.
Ended in the Middle with You, Too - 50MS - Received at the end of the event for those who finished a game.

Creators are allowed to change the content of the first half of the game this time around, in order to make it fit the end half ideas. It's expected so don't be upset if you find your game has changed between sending it off and getting it back! I highly recommend making your first half a fun game that you don't mind morphing into something else, so as to stave off any protective instincts you may have towards the story and ideas.

If it helps people to disassociate themselves a bit from being clingy with their games think of the first half of the event as you making part of a game for someone else - it's not your game, it's theirs. You're just making it for them to mess with. The second half is where you get to make what your get yours.

Remember, we're doing this for fun, guys, and a big part of that is seeing how someone else takes your ideas and makes them into something else. Ideally we'll see games come from this with interesting changes and twists, so don't get attached to the first halves!

that means we need at least one 2k game and two mv games

sadly I can only use ace because I can't pull off what I wanna do in 2k

so somebody else take the fall please thanks

Nothing reveals Humanity so well as the games it plays. A game of betrayal, where the most suspicious person is brutally murdered? How savage.

The problem is indeed the people who only have 2k or MV.

Somebody who isn't them needs to make a game in those engines, otherwise they won't be able to receive any games.
If two people only have MV then that neatly solves itself I think

e: a quick straw poll if what engine people are thinking of using can ideally sniff out any early problems. A bigger problem is if people don't finish and that in turn results in somebody not having a game due to engine choice/options is a bigger concern I think.

That strawpoll is a great idea.

Alright, I'll throw my hat in the ring! Chances are if I have the time to make a first half, then I'll have the time to finish another. If I don't have time to make a first half... well, then I won't get a second half anyways!

I have Steam Versions of Rpg Maker 2000, Rpg Maker 2003, VX, VX ACE, and XP.
With VX and XP not being installed.
I might do mine in 2k so that way Healy has something that can be assigned lol. I wanted to use the 2k3 RTP / refmap anyways
Tell y'all what I'll cover anybody who can't get a second half of the game. I'll make a first half in whatever maker is needed, I got 'em (except legal 2k but that can take tsu2k without a hitch afaik and worst case I can fix that if it doesn't)

I mean it won't be a good first half of the game but that's to be expected from me
I threw my hat in the melee. I own and have access to Ace and MV.
no love for plain VX in the straw poll so far. (I don't use it anymore but I think of it fondly as I easily put the most hours of work into games in that engine than any other.)
i've been sitting here typing cringy self depreciating comments to express my interest in this for the past uh, many minutes. i have no grasp of time or reality.

anyway, i decided i'm signing up, sorry to whoever gets paired with me, and i hope to make something better than actual garbage. my bar is low, so make yours lower. then everyone can be pleasantly surprised by the semi-decency of the final product!

i uh, only have MV though, so actually sorry if that causes any difficulties. hope y'all don't mind dumb questions; i am as clueless about technology as i am socially dysfunctional. so good luck everyone! i look forward to ruining- i mean participating in your lovely event <3

Okay, fine, I'll join! I only have VX Ace, soz T_T
I am extremely scared of participating in events because I don't trust myself but... I also find myself often sparking so many ideas from other people's projects, I can't help but think this should be nice. Plus, I'm both collaborating and working alone... and working on TWO games! This should be nice.

But................... like i always say.........................................................................

i.... dont have a lot of hope....... i'll try though ummmm aaaaaaaaaaa

edit: Also, I give preference to VXA and 2k3, but I can work wth XP and 2k.
Absolutely not MV though lol

edit: you know what would be AWESOME? But kinda not for this event I guess, but like
Something like the Swap in the Middle with You event, except everyone gets to pick from the same 3 first halves and is encouraged to change as much as possible.
:V
Probably the first round would involve peopl voting for the top 3 first halves (is that even feasible though) then the second round would have people pick which one they liked better to work on, and we'd have so many different iterations and different blooms of the same original concepts, it's like playing "what would have been if I did accept that job offer when I was seventeen"
Jo,

I like that idea. I hope Libby puts it on the books for something down the road. I wonder how one can even host an event? Hmm...
Stupid double post for some reason. Ignore!

One, just...don't be so damn hard on yourself. No qualifiers. Dunning-Kruger basically guarantees that if you think you're THAT bad at game development, you almost certainly aren't.

Two, if you wind up getting paired with me, you'll have even less to feel bad about, because in spite of almost 20 years game-making experience, I have literally never used MV besides to look at the default database and the sample maps, so I'm sure I'll make a hash of the second half at least as bad as the hash you made of the first. : )
This sounds interesting. Signed up, but will be pretty busy for the first half... I'll try to make something decent to hand off though.

I have Vx Ace and MV, but have been mostly using MV
i think, out of sheer amusement, i'm going to base the characters in my first half on people i know just to see what the person who gets it will take them ahahsdchjdbsb
