Description

This is the second time we've ran the Swap in the Middle with You event. It's a pretty simple premise. You start a game and work on it for two weeks. At the end of that fortnight all the games are pooled and then distributed semi-randomly to each other. Then everyone finishes the games they are given over the two weeks.

Rules
  • Sign up below. Make sure that you're dedicated for the both parts of the event.

  • Games must be new and made only for this event.

  • You may use any RM engine. Sorry, while it is a neat idea in theory to use any engine, most people who sign up might not have experience in those engines, limiting the ability to finish the games. Please point out if you have the legal or non-legal versions of RPG Maker 2000 and 2003! It won't do anyone any good if I hand you a legal version to finish when you only have the non-legal version to work with, after all!

  • If you only have access to a particular RM engine, please note that in the comment section so that I know to account for that when distributing the first half of the games.

  • Also, make sure to include an RTP stand-alone version of the game (and include resources) when passing it over so that your partner is not looking for different files to make it work.

  • When it comes time to submit, for the first half of the game upload the WIP to the event locker (accessed by Submit in the top corner).

  • First halves of games must be in by the time shown under the Details section after you add your time offset in the settings of your account. The Date End reflects this and will be changed when the second halves are handed out.

  • The second halves will be submitable by game page ONLY. Make a game page for your game whenever you like, just remember to update the information when the second creator comes into play.

  • To keep time realistic, aim for each half to have a half-hour of play at the most. This will make an hour-long game, which is pretty decent for a month of work. You can go over this amount, but remember that the longer the game, the less chance there is to finish it.

  • At least 10 minutes of game play time per half!

  • In the spirit of the event, don't be a back-seat driver to the second creators. They can take the game where they like - that's half the fun of the event. In fact, let's just say that you keep your fingers out of the game pie after it gets handed over. Make it something of a surprise, eh?

  • All games must abide by site rules - pared down to 'no hate speech, no highly sexual content, etc'. If you have questions about what is and is not appropriate, PM Liberty and ask.

Creators are allowed to change the content of the first half of the game this time around, in order to make it fit the end half ideas. It's expected so don't be upset if you find your game has changed between sending it off and getting it back! I highly recommend making your first half a fun game that you don't mind morphing into something else, so as to stave off any protective instincts you may have towards the story and ideas.

If it helps people to disassociate themselves a bit from being clingy with their games think of the first half of the event as you making part of a game for someone else - it's not your game, it's theirs. You're just making it for them to mess with. The second half is where you get to make what your get yours.

Remember, we're doing this for fun, guys, and a big part of that is seeing how someone else takes your ideas and makes them into something else. Ideally we'll see games come from this with interesting changes and twists, so don't get attached to the first halves!

Excellent, the talent pool is growing! This is going to be dope.

(Based on a list of priorities I've made for myself, I need to finish a proof of concept on this side project, file it away, then release the first episode of my main project before I get started on my first half, but I have way too much free time so everything should be fine, I shouldn't need all of the first two weeks.)

Nothing reveals Humanity so well as the games it plays. A game of betrayal, where the most suspicious person is brutally murdered? How savage.

Oh hell yes Cash signed up. Here's to hoping he makes a puzzle game and I get his first half!

I could also try working on Slime Village again instead, but that is such a much bigger timesink that it's a bit daunting to start back on it, to be honest. Especially since I don't have as much time these days.
I've got the most ridiculous premise, I hope whoever gets my half has a good time with it. What is everybody working on?

I think I'm getting slightly attached to my first half LOL. But like, in a funny way. The intro is pretty much a retelling of me and my friends on an afternoon in our apartment / our last vacation, and our "game selves" waking up in a fantasy / digital / game / spiritual / whatever the 2nd dev wants world. How the rest of the game will roll is up to them, i'll now get the assets polished and work on a bunch of assets and disjointed locations that they'll hopefully have a fun time knitting together and deciding what sort of world they fell in lol

i'm slightly insecure about this this will be fun

also the intro / opening is mostly done in a drawn cutscene format in a different style from the rest of the game (to signify the distinction between "our" world and the game) (and as an excuse to use handdrawn cutscenes in a game where the second person may not be able to do that)

i actually have a WAY easier time just drawing things than eventing complex plays and routines for the characters lol. i hatehatehate eventing big sprite-based cutscenes :V

edit:
also also, the fun thing about it is seeing how the second dev will interprete the hints of personality from the opening cutscene and develop these characters which, despite being based on real people, are individual characters who will develop outside of my interpretative environment which will be real amusing to watch lol

i'm very hype for this

and i also am excited to get the second half dsfajkfdvfnjdfbjfga i always wanted to tinker with someone's game use my jo-ray on it to turn it into a buggy messy pile of grinding and show pictures

My first couple of days were putting in what scripts I wanted to use, and some databasing. Made a few tweaks here and there. Though, I suppose disabling display names when my teleport script refers to them is a bit awkward. Maybe I should make that script point to the editor-names instead?

I'm not exactly proud of these maps I've been making for this, but, I've been thinking mostly on enemy balance and skills, and various other ideas. The main idea I've been toying with is encounters getting harder the further out from the starting point that the player goes.
I have a checklist of things I need to do before I can get started. Hopefully it won't take more than a couple of days. Got no day job right now so I can put in the crunch hours if I need to.
I have two maps and a cutscene. And I just decided to redo one of the maps. I'm half considering moving to a different engine because I forgot how much of a ball ache it was to do anything in 2k due to the not-very-neat-and-tidy eventing window.

..wish they'd tidied that up when they released the engine. :/

I also realise I've gotten spoiled by having more tiles to work with in Ace and MV. It's disconcerting having so few decorative tiles. :<
I was working on a parallax map for shits and giggles, randomly decided to use it in my game, and just now realized I can't because I had started it a day or 2 before the current event. Damn. So now I have to rework a little bit and make an even uglier map in a shorter period of time.

I'm curious where my unfortunate victim game dev partner(?) takes my game. I might also keep this around and make my own interpretation of Part 2 after the event.
imo it's not a competition, I wouldn't mind if you used those maps since everyone'd win by having a funner game by the end lol
No need to be so strict I think, but then again if everyone thinks like that you might as well start your build for the swap in the middle 3 now...

I decided to make a story based game in MV with no battles or puzzles. But I only have 2 maps and half of a scene right now. Making scene and scene takes a lot of work and play testing.

Oh yeah, one thing I realized --
Probably whomever gets to finish my first half should have Luna Engine, as I'm using it D:
If I wind up with someone who doesn't I suppose I could last minute remove it though but I made a custom menu for this project already fOR SomE REasON
I will draw the line at using pre-created maps and stuff like that because it kinda breaks the spirit of the event even having a time based crunch. That said, I'm sure you'll be able to make a decent enough map without resorting to adding hours of effort! Don't overthink it too much. You have over a week and half to get at least 10 minutes of gameplay done, after all - nothing says that when you reach a spot you feel fine giving it over, that you can't polish what you have up a bit for the next handler. ^.^

Me, I'm just gonna make til last day and see where that ends. I don't have a pre-set cut-off point.

Jo, I'm pretty sure the EULA for stuff like Luna Engine and the like allow you to include it for others working on the same game to use - as long as ONE person has the legal rights to use it who is working on the game, that's what matters. Now if they took it and used it on another project that'd be another matter altogether.

That said, you really should plan your games around the idea of 'I have to hand this to someone who might not know what the fuck I'm doing'. That's part of the challenge. They can absolutely choose not to use an aspect of a game that they don't know how to use when they get it, so keep in mind for both sides of the fence.
I'm in for this. Throw me in, I need to make a name for myself here and change the game. So I'm gonna change your games.

Got every engine, a undying passion, and gonna blaze through.
I'm not a coward. People putting challenges out there, trying to act like they the only game creators out here trying to make the life.

I put Sim RPG Maker 95 and even SRPG STUDIO on my list. I'm willing to take whatever test to make my name to the world at large.
Um, what? It's only 2k, 2k3, VX, XP, Ace or MV that are usable for this event, because the chances of people having them and knowing how to use them are much higher than other engines.

OP
You may use any RM engine.

You may want to change this, then. Also, I believe that Dyhalto and Ozzy have both stated they'd use SRPG Maker 95.
Am I allowed to jump in? Just saw that you groovy cats already got started here, and I don't want to jump the gun and get on your toes and what not, but I'd love to be apart of this. I was only saying I'd take up the challenge of those other engines if someone wants me to since people mentioned them, but I'm leaning towards a VX ACE game.

I already have a full idea for a 30 minuteish set up to hand off to someone, so if there's room, I'd like to kick ass and swap it up.

Absolutely! Anything goes!

...Anything that isn't against site rules, I mean...
Yes, baby. Time to get real.

Quick question before I disappear to make this project, the wording in the OP confused me on reading, is the in engine RTP required? Or are we able to craft new ones and supply it to those we hand the game off to?
