Description

What is this?
This is a game making event where we partner up in order to create two games per partner!

TWO games?! Are you mad?!
I don't think so? Oh, wait, that was a rhetorical question, right?

Anyway, it's a pretty simple premise. You start a game and work on it for one week. At the end of that week all the games are pooled and then distributed semi-randomly to each other. Then everyone finishes the games they are given over the next week.

Basically, a big swaparoo~

Rules
  • Sign up below. Make sure that you're dedicated for the whole two weeks/both parts of the event.

  • Games must be new and made only for this event.

  • You may use any RM engine. Sorry, while it is a neat idea in theory to use any engine, most people who sign up might not have experience in those engines, limiting the ability to finish the games.

  • If you only have access to a particular RM engine, please note that in the comment section so that I know to account for that when distributing the first half of the games.

  • Also, make sure to include an RTP stand-alone version of the game (and include resources) when passing it over so that your partner is not looking for different files to make it work.

  • When it comes time to submit, for the first half of the game upload the WIP to the event locker (accessed by Submit in the top corner).

  • First halves of games must be in by the time shown under the Details section after you add your time offset in the settings of your account. The Date End reflects this and will be changed when the second halves are handed out.

  • The second halves will be submitable by game page ONLY. Make a game page for your game whenever you like, just remember to update the information when the second creator comes into play.

  • To keep time realistic, aim for each half to have a half-hour of play at the most. This will make an hour-long game, which is pretty decent for 2 weeks. You can go over this amount, but remember that the longer the game, the less chance there is to finish it.

  • In the spirit of the event, don't be a back-seat driver to the second creators. They can take the game where they like - that's half the fun of the event. In fact, let's just say that you keep your fingers out of the game pie after it gets handed over. Make it something of a surprise, eh?

Achievements?
As always, there's badges to consider~
Started in the Middle with You - 30MS - Received at the end of the event for those who started a game and had it completed.
Ended in the Middle with You - 30MS - Received at the end of the event for those who finished a game.
Meshing the Middle with You - 20MS - Given to the game that feels like a concerted effort to create a whole piece.
Mashed in the Middle with You - 20MS - Given to the game that is a mess of mashing together the elements.
Beyond the Middle, it's True - 50MS - Given to the overall best game of the lot, as judged by our panel of select cherry-pickers.

Goodness, I really want to do this I'm just worried about my natural lethargy kicking in. I don't want to give someone elses work a bad finish if they poured their heart into it...
That's the whole point when you get the project it all yours you can do whatever you want with it...am going to do an alien twist hehehe.

SO EXCITED. I just realized I'm going to be involved in 2 games as well... one where I start the game off, and one where I finish it. So there's a higher chance of success. Whoopee!
Sure, why not

This is gonna end terribly for me, isn't it?

(Sadly I've only got Ace)
Well here's a question that may of already been asked...

Are we allowed to use whatever resources are already in the game when we get the half game to complete?

... Then again, any resources are probably allowed for this event.
Yep and yep. If you want to use the resources that the first creator added, then that's fine. If you want to get a different kind, then that's fine too. And yeah, pretty much anything goes for the event.

I've always found contests to be more fun and my projects better-received when I don't tryhard it*, just make something dumb and don't even use up the whole time. Czarina Must Die! and Teenage Costume Squad and Devil::ender won't win any indie gaming awards but they were fun to make. I think I prefer the 1-2 week format for events more, as opposed to where people get discouraged and overshoot in the month-long events (which also just take away a lot of time from your own projects).

*Wine & Roses is probably my best-received project and defies everything I just said, but it was made in a state of mania so I don't think it's to be encouraged ;V

so yeah just make something (when it starts)

I've already said I planned on using MV, but I can use Ace if need be for matching-up purposes. Just let me know, Liberty/any other event organizers.

If others are starting games in XP, I guess I'll go back to my original plan of making my first half in Ace (tho if I need to make it in XP, I totally can, so just let me know).

I've also updated my comment on the engines I can use to finish a game to include XP ^_^

Great advice! ^_^ I think this will work best if everyone relaxes, has fun, and just makes something they enjoy working on!
I HAVE AN IDEA

Okay, I'll try it. Sign me up as a user of VX Ace and RM2k3 Legal!
This sounds really fun, but unfortunately I'm not that experienced with pixel art and programming, so I'll have to pass this for now. I want to wish everyone good luck with this though! The premise is really interesting.

You don't have to be experienced with pixel art or programming in order to participate. As long as you think you're capable of creating a semi-decent piece of game within a short time frame, you're fine. If you can work with an RPG Maker, that's all it takes.

Yeah, I was going to use RTP to save trouble for the other person, or go really minimalist XD
If you aren't going RTP you could include a collection of the assets you're using instead of only the ones you're using or a source so your follow up knows where you got 'em.
Oh, btw, for those who don't have any RM engines (or want to pick up another one) the RPG Maker birthday sale has just started, so most engines are 80% off. Now's as good a time as any to grab a cheap engine if you've the money.

The graphics sets are also 60% off if anyone wants to try a different style to the RTP. (happy is the keyword for these sales)

So with the code 'birthday' applied to the engines you can get them for:
2k3 - $4
XP - $5
VX - $12
Ace - $14

Stand-alone (non-Steam) versions only - https://www.rpgmakerweb.com/products
I'm not sure if I can do this, but I guess that giving it a shot is the only way to find out. I'll try to be really minimalist though, for the sake of myself and y'all.

Can we hint at things in the first half though? Like giving the player the goal of the game in the intro, but not finishing it? Also, can we change things from the first half of a game when you're a second developer, or must everything be left untouched?
You can hint at stuff as much as you like, for your first half of the game. But in your second half try not to touch stuff in the first half unless you need to (to link teleports or fix bugs, for example).
Alright, that sounds fair enough. Thanks for the fast answer. Is it okay to plan your game out a little before the event starts? Like knotting down some small ideas for example.

Quick question; in previous events, even though we could only make games during the event window, we were allowed to collect, assemble, and make resources prior to the start time. Does that apply now?
Why you all be wantin' head starts, yo? I'm just gonna say no. If second person can't have a headstart on making the second part of the game, let's keep it fair.

You can have some ideas floating around, and make note of resources but only start compiling once the chime ring-a-ding-dings.
