Description

Time for a bit of randomness! Everyone has one week to make a short game using a randomly given theme from THIS POST!

SIGNUPS ARE CLOSED AS OF 7/13 3PM CST! Good luck with your themes!

HOW IT WORKS:
Sign up for the event. One person only!
You'll receive a randomly assigned theme from a list to build your game with.
Go nuts! There's no rules here, use rips, custom, whatever! Use whatever engine you're most comfortable with! (Creating custom assets before the event starts is perfectly fine, just don't start sticking things in your engine til go time.)
New games only! Event doesn't start for roughly a week, so take that time to sign up, get a theme, and gather your resources and ideas!
People who submit a finished game will receive a sweet makerscore award!
Submit your finished game to the event page before the cutoff date!

(I don't think I could even make out the hate speech with his thick accent from Whereverestan. Also the font was terrible so I couldn't read the hate speech either lol. I mean later in the game, yes I was like "that's pretty offensive", but not as fast as you made the call.)

MORE IMPORTANTLY:

Wow, I just wanted to say I'm very surprised, and also grateful and honored, to have been Spotlighted for the little game I made for this event.
We don't like shit that is deliberately offensive. If you're gonna put hate speech in your games for the lols, take it elsewhere because RMN doesn't want it. Part of the expectation for event games is that they abide by the rules of the site, one of which is hate speech? Don't.

I just played Kefka's entry in its entirety for some reason and man...what the fuck did I just play.
Never play his games. He makes them as bad and as offensive as possible. He says he does it because he'll never be remembered for games he actually put effort into, so he just makes them bad.

You know, how about just don't make them at all if you can't be assed to put any effort in?

Okay so the weird thing is (Kefka I apologize for talking about you like you're not here, don't mean to be rude) he definitely put effort into making it offensive and bad. Like...at least as much effort as it would take to make a decent game. So yeah that's...fucking bewildering. While I was watching the stream I was amazed at how quickly Liberty shut down his game, but clearly she knew his M.O.

Actually, (probably by accident?) there was a mildly entertaining bit of gameplay in the middle of uh... "Project 1". There's a little world map maze that you navigate by land to get to the boat to get to the airship. It was kind of neat.
I just recreate Dragon Quest over and over again, so who am I to talk?
I realize. I just come from MMO forums where there was a legit orthodoxy on how to do things. "But you can also do it this way..." "That's not right." The point of game making is to have fun. Obviously, this stuff gets him off somehow. My games are pretty weird themselves (I don't do troll games, but still) so I guess I can sort of imagine the pendulum swinging the opposite direction. A sort of stuff like this.

Ideally, people wouldn't feel the need to make troll games. But I'm not a mod, and as such my priority instead I guess to want this forum to have all sorta games, including Zephyr Skies: The Winter Sage. Well, maybe not all like ZS: TWS. But you get the point, I think.

For events? Maybe not. Obviously, it's some kinda attention-seeking. I get that.

They're literally troll games. Bad troll games at that. I think the world could do without them.
If we all made games the same way, someone would decide the ideal was 2k3 DynRpg games with the PicPointer patch, custom menus, and Treasure of Rudora chipsets. One or two game of that sort is probably fine, but yeah, you can't only have "good" games. Who decides what's good? You?

You have to have games that are ummm, different. Even if you or I don't like them.

I couldn't play it. It said Rpgss3 stopped working.

H.P. Troll Grade
"This is to certify that you have failed W.O.M.B.A.T. Grade 2 and have been awarded the classification of Troll. Although this was a difficult examination, it was quite an achievement for you to score zero. We are forced to conclude that you were either making a rebellious statement about the futility of formal education (in which case you are probably a member of a subversive goblin group), or that you were too busy attempting to eat the examination paper to notice the questions (in which case, you are a troll)."
Yay, I got a cheevo!

I think all but three people who submitted (Maybe pianotm? I'm not sure if Libby's LP reviews are part of the thing, and he refused to let people play it. Kefkafeine too, cuz it was kinda inappropriate, expressly disqualified. Utopia too, cuz empty world) get it. I dunno, though. My game managed to be a horrid mess.

Jeez, what did kefkafeine do? (I did notice he finished his game like ten days ahead of anybody else, almost immediately actually, and I was like 'hmm...either that guy's really good or he's really bad!').
Should be out shortly.

Done! Let me know if I missed anyone. Currently the only ones missing should be
- kefkafeine (disqualified)
- MsterLouie (disqualified)
- anyon175 (pending - send me a link to the RTP so I can check the game. Uploading to your locker would work)

Thanks so much for playing my game and the kind words about it! The idea of the hero just walking out on the villain at the end and leaving them like "wait wha- that's not-" had me in stitches lmao, I didn't even think of that. I just rushed the ending cuz I had like three hours or smthn left to submit. But so long as it wasn't painful or tedious to play, I feel accomplished! C: I'll have to play all the other games myself as well now.
Thanks for giving my game a try, Liberty!
Unbalanced mess that it was, I'm glad that the reception wasn't nearly as bad as I was thinking it would be. Definitely a fun little event to get the creative juices flowing, and hopefully I'll be able to make even better games in the future!
@StormCrow

I hadn't fully finished Chapelwaite when I wrote the review, but I have now. That was a crazy ride. I loved the random events happening, I genuinely thought I was going crazy, BUT once the motion blur happened I started to hate it. It started at some point when I went into the library and persisted through the entire rest of the game which was annoying. I had no idea what was going on here. As for Robert's journal, I didn't have any trouble finding it, but I could've also been lucky with finding everything.

I had to attempt the final Mausoleum sequence about 10 times before I got through it, and on one of them I went invisible and got sent out of bounds. I thought it was just part of the random insane events, but slowly realized that this was way less than intentional. The whole sequence was quite hard, and the only was I could get through was by dodging all the monsters leading up to the final worm man and getting lucky with the saber. I'd personally suggest more bandages (I used up all of them in the event where you rapidly lose health and then gain it back), and changing the death mechanic since sometimes a monster would just target Calvin or Charles (Sometimes Calvin's protect mechanic just wouldn't do anything) and it'd be an instant game over. I can see why you'd prefer it to be the way it is now, though.

Overall, this was still a fantastic game that I got pretty invested in. It was definitely overly ambitious, and there were issues that came from that, but just the fact that a game this filled to the brim with detail and content was made in the short time frame is amazing.

And my name is sadly not Dan
Thanks Liberty! That was fun! I watched most of the streams (afterwards, not live) and it was entertaining watching your reactions and comments on the games... and interacting with your cat.

There were some really creative entries. Good job everyone!

Comments on my game:
1. Totally didn't realize that was supposed to be a girl.
2. Thanks Berry for helping Liberty find the second ending. Didn't want to make it too obvious, but not too hard either... not sure how well I succeeded.
3. On that note, the book in your house gives random hints, which might help find it. It also tells you about the dog and a training dummy outside your house.
4. Sorry you died on the last battle. I should have prompted you to save, or make some indication that it would be a harder battle instead of using the same sprite.
5. I made the fire spirits take 50% more damage from water, but guess they have too much magic def. Yeah, the Water Blast is kind of useless.
6. Haha, loved your reaction at the end. Didn't even think about how flowers reproduce, just thought it would be sad if Hua (which means flower in Chinese... couldn't think of a name for a flower) was the last one.
That was fun!

Somehow I managed to tune in right when my own game was playing.

You uhhh may need to recut the video. It started with The Struggle.
