Description

Time for a bit of randomness! Everyone has one week to make a short game using a randomly given theme from THIS POST!

SIGNUPS ARE CLOSED AS OF 7/13 3PM CST! Good luck with your themes!

HOW IT WORKS:
Sign up for the event. One person only!
You'll receive a randomly assigned theme from a list to build your game with.
Go nuts! There's no rules here, use rips, custom, whatever! Use whatever engine you're most comfortable with! (Creating custom assets before the event starts is perfectly fine, just don't start sticking things in your engine til go time.)
New games only! Event doesn't start for roughly a week, so take that time to sign up, get a theme, and gather your resources and ideas!
People who submit a finished game will receive a sweet makerscore award!
Submit your finished game to the event page before the cutoff date!

I'm updating my game (again). I figured out how to ignore the license page. I happen to like shortcuts, but whatever. After that, I'm gonna figure out how to add music, because I hear people like it.

Video 1 cracks me up. Libby is like WHO DID THIS?!?

K, uploading now.
Slime Quest has multiple endings.
-One where you just escape and turn back to a slime
-You can also go into the castle wearing a skinsuit or changed into a human, and these are most of the endings.

My game you have four items you collect. It's one ending, and it's kinda stupid, and the battles are random challenge I think. So you gotta save between battles. There's four zones and a final boss.
-The cave: mostly puzzles and a password thing (if you don't say the password, you can be pushed back and depending where you sit, pushed into a hole). The battle is a slime thing.
- The forest: Pretty much you talk to the tree and boss battle. Most HP of four but it's a tree.
-Castle area: You kinda fight loads of tanks for parts. After the tally reaches like 30, you can leave there.
-Mountain: Kinda just a long windy path. The top has a phoenix that respawns as long as it have MP (if only there were a way to silence it and drain its MP)
-Then you fight after all items are collected.

Crud, I forgot a gameover event on the last boss.
I might try and beat Godslayers (although I mean...two trees worth of wood to cross a two tile gap is just logical people :P). I definitely want to beat Unkind Dead and try Danmension which is totally not a virus.
What games you played so far, StormCrow?
@bulma: These.

Danmension (Again) By Deaflopist

LOVE DAT title screen.

Custom graphics? Noice? Hmm, I can't seem to actually walk left or right though, just kind of scuttle sideways like a crab.

I get that we're aiming for a minimalist graphical style here but...more differentiation between walls, floors, and ceilings would be nice. Everything is just a slightly differently shaded block that I don't know if I can walk on or not.

This seems like a depressingly hyper-quotidian world. Or deadpan black humor. Unsure.

One of my clients is asking for a discount? What? What is it I'm selling? How big of a discount? More information PLZ. Ah, but thou must.

Hahahaha. Ignore your coworker?

>Yes.
>Yes.

As soon as Color Dan shows up I'm feeling Rick & Morty vibes. Eyepatch Dan? Okay, that was definitely intentional then. Lovely homage to Rick And Morty here.

Ah, I see Dans are very flammable.

What is this "Zoom Out" camera move I saw here and in 3F? Is that just something you can do with MV, or is it a script? Anyway great reveal of the Kraken.

Man, this started weird and is just get weirder and weirder. I love it.

Ugh fuck algebra, I'm glad I'm not drunk while I'm playing this.

Beat it! That was really fun and entertaining. Very funny and even a little thought provoking, tickled the feels a bit. Overall probably my favoritest of the Roulette games I played. I'm really glad I could convince my computer it wasn't malware.

One thing, though: It. Is. Spelled. Deity.

The Unkind Dead (Revisited) By pianotm

HIDDEN FOR SPOILERS RATHER THAN LENGTH

Okay, that was totally worth replaying in its unborked form for the ending alone.

Critiques: I am not sure what fighting six identical and quite boring battles adds to the game. I'd just have her chainsaw the zombies apart on the field map, not get the battle system involved at all. I think you could totally drop the Evil Dead connection, honestly, and therefore lose some of the exposition at the beginning. Post apocalyptic world, zombies run amok, chainsaw robots protect us, that's all you need. The ending was appropriately graphic and viscerally upsetting (good job!!!) but would have been even better with some wet, splattery noises underscoring that chainsaw sound. I was disappointed when the first two murders were executed with a fade to black, and happy to see the third and most upsetting actually shown and animated.

Overall, I loved the ending obviously; I'm a real sick fuck.

Based on the streams I've watched/games I've played, it seems like Sidewinder is the other person who went as "full retard" as I did in terms of trying to complete a very real, overly ambitious, purposefully serious game in this insanely tight time-frame. Good on ya Sidewinder. Gotta play Bounty Angel so I can see those AVIs that didn't capture.
Do The Struggle. It's fun, even though it's very short.

(Rant)

Libby, RpgMaker's installer for 2k3 is NOT perfectly good. It creates 5 files which I then have to pack inside a zip file, which someone then has to fiddle with the lzh file using the Setup. It's inefficient and ugly. One file, five files, hmmm... Yeah, I think I'll take one file, thank you. Once you put it into a zip file, it isn't anymore compressed than before.

This "perfectly good" packer barely compresses anything. Install Creator converts 78 MB into 47MB. The rpgmaker one? 66 MB, and it leaves file trash. I've also had it corrupt info before. For reference, I simply rightclicked, and used my basic Windows 7 zip to compress it, and making a basic Zip file compressed to 52 MB, and left no trash. That's right, my default Windows packer is better than the "perfectly good" compresser.

For the record, I can make a windowed installer using InstallCreator. I just don't like them as much. And I did, after your initial comment. In fact, you should probably use the one I made later. The monsters in the first draft of the game are hard, and give crap experience. If you hate it cuz it was too hard, well, I warned you.

Anyway, here's a link to what should be a no full-screen, no shortcuts thingy.

Yup. It's right here.

Finally got round to watching this. Very much enjoyed Liberty's Calvin voice once she got it dialed in. Around three hours eighteen minutes, Liberty poops just a little when the Thing In The Church pops out and that alone has made the 200 or so hours I put into Chapelwaite all that much more worth it. Sorry for the annoyance caused by limited stamina. It's there specifically to make it harder to run away from monsters (kind of trying to counterbalance the terrible pathfinding in Ace, but I was also thinking of Silent Hill where after a short burst of running you'd have to stop and pant because of your FRAIL HUMANITY, never quite implemented the panting). Do by all means read Jerusalem's Lot. That said, the bulk of the text of it definitely wound up in my game.
I was planning on dropping all my thoughts on the games at once, but due to getting my wisdom teeth out i'm way less functional than I expected I would be, so it'll be awhile until I get through all the games and have cohesive thoughts about them. I'll drop my current thoughts now and get to all the other games when I'm more physically and mentally able.

Chapelwaiten By StormCrow (Theme: Abomination)

It’s hard to go wrong with a Stephen King inspired game, and this is further proof of that. It has a detailed realistic kind of setting which works well in the spooky atmosphere the game has, since the dark house serves to cover up the sometimes unsettling nature of seeing realistic people move with the stiff blocky movements (This serves, instead, as an advantage, since the sometimes unsettling movement fits perfectly with the game). The very “real” setting makes this terrifying to go through, along with the ambient sound around the game. It's hard not to appreciate the sheer amount of ambition put into this.

The dialogue is great, not because it is written exclusively well by the creator, but because it is taken directly from the game’s base, Jerusalem’s Lot, and abridged into text that fits rpgmaker’s structure. The time that this must've saved went into making the environments high quality and up to the part. If you want to read a Stephen King book, but don’t like to grab a physical book to read, then this is a fantastic way to experience the story.
Doesn't mean you shouldn't read the book, too, though.

Utopia By MsterLouie (Theme: Utopia)

The user posted that this game was far from finished, so there’s not really much to say here. There’s a layout for a map, but nothing within it. If the game gets finished (They mentioned that they might, I believe) I’ll definitely return, though. Would love to see cities of gold, or even just how rpg elements would works with utopian concepts.

The Mountain By Mirin (Theme: Mount)

This game has an issue with “show, don’t tell” and takes it to a new extreme. The game starts with 2 children talking about a scary person, and then you walk through a forest and inevitably get stabbed for being that same scary person. There’s several ways to end the game, but there’s only one ending. Open a box? Get stabbed by your friend. Tell a joke? Get stabbed. Drink purifying water that cleanses the evil spirits inside? Stabbed. I went through all the possible options (unless there was some arbitrary other ending triggered by idling for 5 minutes, or something) and I all I got were knives in the back with the exact same ending dialogue.
It’s pretty clear that there wasn’t much time spent here, with how many events were copy/pasted throughout randomly. You get what was worked on here.

3f(Fox’s Fire Fetch) By Tale (Theme: Aurora Borealis)

Simple and pretty. There’s a few relaxing little quests that you do, and then it ends with a soothing video of the aurora borealis. Unless you wanted to meme on Steamed Hams i’m not sure what could be changed for the better other than some minor inconsequential things, like a little quest where you have to find a key in a corner that I spent way too much time being confused with, and there’s an old lady you lead up a mountain that would’ve been nice to watch the aurora borealis with. Other than those tiny complaints, this was a great time. Would recommend if you wanna relax for a few minutes. I wouldn’t be surprised if there were plenty of symbolism here I didn’t see due to being distracted by the pretty pictures, either.

Thanks for any criticism! There's definitely a lot that you mentioned that I would've liked to do better, but i'm glad the end product turned out well regardless. I tried to prioritize quality over length here, and there was a lot of dimensions that got cut because of that (Ideas like the Banana Bandanna dimensions will never exist, now) and I think that payed off. In the future I hope I can use the mistakes and successes to learn for more quality works going forward.
Thanks for calling me out on spelling deity horribly wrong so many times, by the way

Response to responses:

@Marrend It's mostly my fault, I think. I tried to actually attack with Zoe instead of countering and so by unlucky chance the boss targeted Abe. This happened twice in a row, and he died... But yeah, the reason why reflect isn't 100% by default in VX Ace is because of this invincibility thing.

@Fomar0153 Yeah, this game mechanic would've been amazing in a project that had longer development time. Time constraints lead to empty rooms where people mistakenly try to rush the last boss xD

@Sam Woah, sounds like the battle system was tough to work out. The final battle for me pretty much was as you described. After the 4th try RNGesus finally answered my prayers and didn't completely demolish me as soon as the king got low.

@Liberty I watched the stream-- for gotta start somewhere, there's no ending for walking, but in the beginning, before you have any skills (including walking), there's the option to [submit "Nothing" as a skill] and that's the 1st ending. You got every single other one otherwise-- thanks for being so thorough!

Anyway! I'm going after interesting-sounding titles this time.

More game mini reviews!

Slime Quest by coelocanth, Theme: Slime

Managed to get most of the endings, did both pacifist and genocide runs. I really like the concept for this, plus, the multiple endings were super fun to find. I did stumble across a bug though-- if you fight the mayor while your attack is too high and you finish him off before his guards come, he doesn't die and continues chasing you endlessly. Nothing a little editing to Troops.json couldn't fix! Also, the little details were super nice-- how each action you did would tie back in to the story and eventually endings later. I was surprised how much the dialogue could change between playthroughs-- that was a nice touch. Overall, great game with lots of replay potential.

Project Soap by Eurritimia, Theme: Soap

Very unique, to say the least! If nothing else, probably the strangest collision physics I've ever seen xD I wasn't sure if there was more to the game other than pinball, plus, my soap kept falling off the sides, and there wasn't really an indicator for like progress/score etc so after 5 minutes of trying not to drop the soap I dropped the game.

A Maiden's Ballad by Starmage, Theme: Passion (in progress)

I haven't beaten the game yet (at the underground passage part right now) but from my playthrough so far, I can say that the aesthetics of this game are really well put-together. The game is just visually really pretty to look at. The battles are balanced very nicely, too. You never do so much damage that you sweep through battles and they become uninteresting, but you don't get damaged so much that you need to dedicate a character to pure healing. Max HP is low enough that you need to use skills thoughtfully instead of just spamming attack. My only criticism, which is a bit of a nit-pick, is that the semi-cursive slanty font is a bit tiring to read in large chunks, but even the font fits the game's visual theme very well.

edit for short reviews of more games!

Fox Fires Fetch by tale, Theme: Aurora Borealis

A nice, calm game. I was a bit confused at first but after willing suspension of disbelief everything made a lot more sense. The HUD is very simple and intuitive. Progression was nice, I couldn't find the last quest for a bit but since the map is very linear I found it very quickly with minimal searching. I feel like some of the dialogue is hinting towards something deeper (esp. given the atmosphere) but it wasn't elaborated on a lot so I just kept going. Visuals were very nice, the inclusion of real-world photography was even somehow fitting despite that usually clashing with RTP.

Utopia by MsterLouie, Theme: Utopia

The game feels finished to me. Truly, a world without random encounters or cackling villains or damsels in distress can only be called a utopia. Just one giant map for you to wander around in, and the sailor dude lets you ride for free :D

@Deaflopist:

Very glad you enjoyed Chapelwaite. Were you able to beat it? It's not actually all that long of a game (45-75 minutes probably), but I worry about two things, one is the difficulty of finding Robert's journal, the other is the overall difficulty of the final Mausoleum sequence.

Oh, and for what it's worth, transplanting all of that excruciatingly verbose Stephen-King-doing-an-HPL-Impression into RPG Maker was actually quite a chore. But it was a high priority to be faithful to the source material.

I think it's worth expanding Danmension into a longer game but obviously it's totally up to you. I personally would like to see those cut dimensions.

Honestly, I had a beef with the saving in Chapelwaite. It was a lovely game, but that you could only save in those circles, or on certain spots, and one of them was where you could write/read meant I read that creepy book, saved, got Shaken and insta-died on reload of the game.

I honestly think free saving would be better, or auto-saving after each day. But definitely not right before reading a sketchy tome. Btw, when I saved it the first time, it was okay. I learned a spell and was only slightly shaken. It was the reload that was problematic.
@mishi, thanks for the positive review - glad you enjoyed it.
I'll try and track down that bug without re-introducing another one (as that fight changes if you killed the reinforcements already, so need to make sure the bodies don't appear on two different maps.)

StormCrow! Thanks! I genuinely had no enthusiasm for the game. Honestly, using the combat system is quicker, cheaper, and easier than all of the animation and eventing needed to rip up zombies on the screen. And wet, squishy sounds! Good idea!

Also, the zombie sprites are from the MV RTP.

This should be the last stream unless all the games are over an hour long!

And done!

Reminder that if you finish your unfinished games within the next week-ish and PM them to me, I'll play them on their own stream!
I totally forgot about this~ with MFGJ and all~~~~~~

if I had skill, that's what I'd do.
That was fun!

Somehow I managed to tune in right when my own game was playing.

You uhhh may need to recut the video. It started with The Struggle.
Thanks Liberty! That was fun! I watched most of the streams (afterwards, not live) and it was entertaining watching your reactions and comments on the games... and interacting with your cat.

There were some really creative entries. Good job everyone!

Comments on my game:
1. Totally didn't realize that was supposed to be a girl.
2. Thanks Berry for helping Liberty find the second ending. Didn't want to make it too obvious, but not too hard either... not sure how well I succeeded.
3. On that note, the book in your house gives random hints, which might help find it. It also tells you about the dog and a training dummy outside your house.
4. Sorry you died on the last battle. I should have prompted you to save, or make some indication that it would be a harder battle instead of using the same sprite.
5. I made the fire spirits take 50% more damage from water, but guess they have too much magic def. Yeah, the Water Blast is kind of useless.
6. Haha, loved your reaction at the end. Didn't even think about how flowers reproduce, just thought it would be sad if Hua (which means flower in Chinese... couldn't think of a name for a flower) was the last one.
@StormCrow

I hadn't fully finished Chapelwaite when I wrote the review, but I have now. That was a crazy ride. I loved the random events happening, I genuinely thought I was going crazy, BUT once the motion blur happened I started to hate it. It started at some point when I went into the library and persisted through the entire rest of the game which was annoying. I had no idea what was going on here. As for Robert's journal, I didn't have any trouble finding it, but I could've also been lucky with finding everything.

I had to attempt the final Mausoleum sequence about 10 times before I got through it, and on one of them I went invisible and got sent out of bounds. I thought it was just part of the random insane events, but slowly realized that this was way less than intentional. The whole sequence was quite hard, and the only was I could get through was by dodging all the monsters leading up to the final worm man and getting lucky with the saber. I'd personally suggest more bandages (I used up all of them in the event where you rapidly lose health and then gain it back), and changing the death mechanic since sometimes a monster would just target Calvin or Charles (Sometimes Calvin's protect mechanic just wouldn't do anything) and it'd be an instant game over. I can see why you'd prefer it to be the way it is now, though.

Overall, this was still a fantastic game that I got pretty invested in. It was definitely overly ambitious, and there were issues that came from that, but just the fact that a game this filled to the brim with detail and content was made in the short time frame is amazing.

And my name is sadly not Dan
Thanks for giving my game a try, Liberty!
Unbalanced mess that it was, I'm glad that the reception wasn't nearly as bad as I was thinking it would be. Definitely a fun little event to get the creative juices flowing, and hopefully I'll be able to make even better games in the future!
