Description

A big component of games is the story, but there are games out there where the draw is not the story, the characters, the setting or the gameplay (well, not as much, anyway). It's the sidequests, and that's why we're here today - to make a game based on quests!

What is a Sidequest?
Sidequests are quests that are, quite often, optional. They tend to add more meat to a game and often require the player to do particular tasks in exchange for treasure. Different kinds of sidequests tend to have particular expectations on how to complete them.

They are as follows:

- Fetch Quests: Find items and bring them back to the quest giver. These can be as simple as buying an item from a shop, or as hard as going through a whole optional dungeon in order to find a lost item. They can be integral to the story, or not at all a part of it, but the main component is "Go here and get this for me".
- Battle/Exploration/Tutorial Quests: Usually revolve around aspects of the battle system, exploration or tutorial, which help your character learn how to use various aspects of the game. Usually these are once-and-done miniquests that aim to teach by example. "Jump over 10 logs/Create 3 potions/Use Combo-attack 5 times against an enemy" are all examples of these kinds of quests.
- Kill Quests: Kill x number of enemies for me! These are the most simple of quests, usually, though they can be annoying if the monster in question is hard to find.
- Chain Quests: A series of quests that connect to each other. "Bring this to my friend > it's the wrong item, go get me the right one > take this back to the original guy > now use this to kill an enemy for me > etc". They usually can contain various different types of quests within them.
- Escort Quests: Protect a character or thing until you reach a specific area. Some of these will require in or out of battle protection.
- Gather Quests: Like the Fetch Quests, this requires that you gather a set amount of items, whether from enemy drops or interaction with the environment. They require finding specific items, collecting an amount and bringing them back to the quest giver.
- Timed Quests: You usually have a set amount of time to do this quest in, and usually it overlaps with other kinds of quests, but the main component is that race against the clock.
- Hybrid Quests: Quests tend to overlap various quest types to create a particular quest. For example, a kill quest that also doubles as an escort mission, where you must help an NPC to kill a set amount of monsters for them to pass a test.
- Story Quests: Not usually considered sidequests, these are quests that move the story forward, but can also be used to delve deeper into the lore or characterisation of the game world or characters. They usually involve any of the above quest types but are centred around the story/lore/characters/etc of the game.

- Miniquests are sidequests in miniature. They tend to require very little of the player beyond what they've already done in the game, and rarely (if ever) ask the player to leave the immediate area/zone in order to complete them. Such quests can include aspects of any of the above, however on a much smaller scale. For example, giving someone a potion, asking you to kill rats in a room, asking you to talk to someone in the house next door.

What are we doing?
In this event the idea is to create a game that focuses on what would usually be an optional aspect of a game. The story of the game can be quite short, in and of itself, as the main aspect will be the quests themselves. In this event you can structure the game to follow only sidequests, or have a short story as an aside to the quests, but the main component of the game, the main focus, must be the quests.

You will be tasked to create a game with at least ten sidequests within it, if not more, and those required ten must make use of ten of the listed quest names below, either as direct reference to the quests themselves, or as inspiration for them.

That is: Make game with 10 or more sidequests, but 10 of them must be directly inspired from the listed quest names below. An actual over-arching story/main quest for your game is completely optional.

Rules
- Start on the 21sth of January. Remember to set your site time zone so that you can check this page for the event start and end times!
- Games must be full games. As the story isn't the main aspect, you can have something very short.
- When you have enough details about your game, CREATE A GAME PAGE, at least a few days before the end of the event (remember, game pages need to be checked over. Give time just in case it gets denied and you have to fix something! Last minute game pages will be met with face-palmage and me crossly flailing my arms around asking "Why?! Why do they do this every goddamn event?!")
- End date is midnight of February 19th. Again, please set your site timezone preferences so that you can tell when that is!
- You may team up, if you so wish.
- You may be part of multiple teams, if you so wish.
- You must include a list of the named quests you used in a Read Me file in the game folder OR someplace on the game page.

- Your game must have at least 10 of the named quests below.
- Your game can have no main quest, or something short. The main component must be the quests, though.

The Quests
Pick at least ten of the below names to base ten of your quests on. You may have more than ten quests total, or exactly ten, but a requirement of the event is to have ten quests within your game based on the quest names/titles below.

FAQs
How obscure can we be?
A little obscure, yeah, but not so obscure that people can't figure out where the idea came from on the list. You can fudge the spelling on some of the words, too, as long as it remains similar to the original. For example "Morning > Mourning".

Aw crap, I forgot to include the list of quests I implemented. Hope it's okay for me to do that here:

Blood on the Snow
The Ballad of the Grey Man (kinda)
Suzy's Catastrophic Day
Oops! Suddenly... Cthulhu!
Visions and Voices (kinda)
The Last Dancer (kinda)
Oops! Suddenly... Cthulhu! Part II
Twin Souls
A Grave Remembrance
Ye Olde Guitar of the Blood God (kinda)
Kitten Kabootle
Paint it Black-ish (kinda)

The "kinda" ones were from the final sidequest I kind of crammed in at the last minute (with plenty of self-referencial put-downs from the cast) which combined a bunch of the music-y sounding names into a quick-fire recruitment event in a graveyard to form an undead rock band. The plan for this was originally much better but I ran out of time to actually make things so I just stuck everyone in the same graveyard. When I redo this quest it'll be much bigger, don't worry. :)
Hip hip hurraaaaayyyy for all of those who made it!!! You're the best :)
Congratulations to everyone who made it! You are an inspiration to the rest of us. I will have to make sure that I am able to make up for my SHAMEFUR DISPRAY in the future to honor your efforts.

Congrats to everyone! Now we wait with abated breath while Libby and possibly others record our games and find that one game breaking bug! There is consolation punch and biscuits at the craft table.

On a less random note, already downloading the entries, but tbh I'm not really good with reviews and such. x.x

I'm doing that now. More like you'll binge play them all in one afternoon.

EDIT: And I have just reviewed The World is Doomed and it's All Because of You. It's been awhile since I've actually wanted to review something.

Huh, wait, submissions closed? It's still not time yet though! D:

It says "Ends 02/19/2017 09:00 PM" and it's only still 8:51 PM!

edit:
Wait, nevermind, I guess the post count time says otherwise.
Well, here's my submission then--

If Liberty plans on livestreaming these games, I'd be honored if she could still give mine a shot.

Anyways, congratulations everyone! We went from 1 completed game to 9 in a single day!

Well, maybe that's something for a tips article.

It really wasn't too hard for my team. I was making art from the beginning, nabbed tileset I was making for something else and kept adding to it, but from day one, Kylaila and I sat down and hashed out how quests would play out. We also decided to simplify things so that they could be easily figured out. So we skipped on chances for plays on words like A Stitch In Time, which became a simple sidequest that if you didn't finish it in time, you failed and missed out on a quest. Then when it came down to programming, I wrote the script, mapped the game, and basically told Arcmagik what I wanted and then tried my best to keep out of his hair and he started out by eventing the hard stuff first. I spent the time I was waiting for him making music and tweaking art. I was also writing scripts for him to follow. Towards the end, I did have to program a few of the quests but we began playtesting a beta a few days ago.

I think "go in with a plan and stick to it," and "keep things simple and don't keep adding on" are the best tips I can give for making a deadline.

Now, I do have something to admit here. If I didn't pull a team together, I doubt I would have been able to make this deadline. For a ten quest mandatory event, there was just too much for one person to do in a month.
Nine's better than I thought we were gonna get, it was looking like four-ish for a bit there! Congrats to y'all! :)

Since mine is unfinished I'm gonna dump my quest notes here for anybody interested in what I was going to go with:

BUST A NECROGROVE MAIN QUEST
+ Bone of Contention
A necromancer has taken over the abandoned Fenrot Keep and is working on raising an undead army to take control of the realm! It's up to a group of starry eyed adventurers looking for fame and fortune to end the necromancer's ambitions before they become too powerful to stop!

SIDE QUESTS

+ The Last Dancer
Fenrot Keep had a small team of martial artist dancers but all were killed in the incident that lead to abandonng Fenrot Keep. Maybe there's a record of their art or something, it's worth investigating. Turns out there's one survivor, except they're undead, trying to preserve the dance-fu and attacks the party thinking they're a bunch of murderous psychos out to end the art of dance (they kinda are?).
DANCER'S SPIRIT

+ Oops! Suddenly... Cthulhu!
Everybody knows the cooky old man lives near the keep's docks. He's kinda unhinged and violent and everybody thinks he's the reason sheep keep disappearing and cute sheep should be protected! Go check this shit out. Find him speaking mohenjo daro with some weird ritual going on and clearly he's summoning a monster or something so kick a candle over and cheer in trump. Turns out he says he's maintaining a seal to keep an eldritch abomination in the lake and the sheep are sacrifices to keep it sated and freaks out and runs away. Turns out he wasn't entirely wrong except instead of an eldritch abomination it's a hungry mermaid.
DEPTH'S REACH

+ Twin Souls
Fight YOUR EVIL CLONES CREATED FROM AN EVIL MIRROR! Cover it in a legend about a mirror that reveals the truth about whoever looks into it and as it turns out adventurer and RPG protagonists are all mass murderers so they fight evil 180hue clones of themselves.
BROKEN MIRROR

+ Rune of the Moon
Punch a werewolf
A rare rune of the moon is known to be in the pocession of the old court wizard of Fenrot. Check out his wizarding tower and see if you can find it. (somebody else already did and is NOW A WEREWOLF because the rune is cursed or something)
LYCANTHROPE'S CURSE

+ Lit Green with Envy
Somebody saw a dragon making its lair in the castle. Everybody knows dragons have a hoard of gold with them. Take it!
Too bad... this dragon is broke. It won't attack the player unless they're traveling with sufficient gold coins or ingots, making it envious of the player's riches and it tries to steal them.
DRAGON'S BLOOD

+ Suzy's Catastrophic Day
The fairy Suzy is on a mission! She was on a mission to poison a well of Datun but got her directions mixed up and poisoned Ingmoor instead! To cover her mistake she had to collect and craft a new poison for Datun and went to collect troll blood from the mountains but accidentally caused a landslide for the inhabitants of Seford! Unable to create a new poison she decided to steal an existing one and visited a well known apothecary at Bawic but while trying to find a poison she accidentally started a fire and set off flammable concoctions, setting the city ablaze. Flustered with her inability to perform her original mission she headed to Rotfen Keep to decide what to do next.
MISERY'S COMPANY

+ A Twisted Beauty
An angel was bound through vile magics to protect the keep back when it was in use. What happened to the Angel when the keep was abandoned is unknown, keep your eyes peeled and free it if you can!
Turns out the Angel was bound with a poorly worded contract, to protect the inhabitants of the keep. This was taken as the current inhabitants and after a few years as the old population moved out and others moved in the Angel decided to get payback and killed any inhabitants that weren't present at the time of binding. This lead to the keep being abandoned and the angel has settled in, waiting for the chance of another blodobath.
WHITE LIGHT

+ Witch Upon a Star
A witch was chased to the area surrounding Rotfen Keep recently. It's possible she is taking refuge there. She is wanted for a series of crimes in nearby cities. Meet out justice if found.
She _is_ hiding, but rather she's hiding on a star visible in the observatory via a telescope. Once you find her she somehow knows the game is up, shows up in the observatory, and tries to kill you to keep her secret hiding place hidden.
CURSED STAR

+ Good Knight, Sweet Prince
The prince of this realm and his bodyguard went to Rotfen Keep to settle the necromancer issue several weeks ago but haven't been heard from since. The worst is assumed but there's still hope either is alive. Save them if you can! You never find them, but you do find their goatee 180hue mirror clones! They probably tried to finish the Twin Souls quest but failed and died.
ROYAL DECREE
-Consume gives Royal (support) class
-Equip gives

+ All's Well That Ends Well
Have you ever gone spelunking in wells? You should try it one of these days! Sometimes there's great treasure, sometimes you'll just find the abodes of kooky old men with mold problems!
(or a demon)
VILE TAIL

I'll try playing and posting some feedback of the entries over the next week or so.

i think it got difficult for a lot of people because it's not a concept you can really trim back on less you go super meta-rpg like my offering. BUT we got a lot of cool game teams out of this!
