GAY CHARACTERS

Ok this may be a stupid reason to want to play a game but I've never played an RPG with a gay main character. I don't mean ambiguously gay or stereotypically gay or subtly implied gay or bromance or any vague crap like that I mean a character who outright states that he likes men. And I was wondering if anyone has ever played an RPG (RPG maker or mainstream) that exhibits this.
There are quite a few wRPGs that let you pursue homosex.

Dragon Age: Origins and Dragon Age 2 are two; but they aren't specifically gay main characters. The sexuality of the character is determined by you and your choices as a player.

I brought Shadow Hearts: A New World, there's two gay characters so far, both a couple. But not playable.
Sorry bro I deal in lesbians.

Nah I kid - long live the Kinsey scale. Current gam has plenty of not straight people kicking around, but 1) I ain't gonna be done for ages, 2) SORRY BRO I DEAL IN LESBIAN MAIN CHARACTERS for now.

Welp, my game has lots of men (including the MC) sexing each other up in it, but the really gay parts aren't going to be released for a loooooong time.

I only play gay characters if I can slur like a stereotype.
Lol sometimes RMN games have gay characters. Quite funny at times if done right.

Of my games that have gay characters, the only two that are mains are Edifice: Dark Guidance and In Praise of Peace. Pretty much all my games have gay characters, though, although I kind of subverted my own trope in my ancient game Wizardsong which I just replayed/released... one of the important characters is quite straight, but has been fake-courting/sexing a man in order for information and lie-spreading.

On that note, and to make this topic more worthwhile, I see no reason to go I HAVE A GAY CHARACTER or to make it a sidequest about finding out about their lover or whatever. Like... gay people are people, too. The only thing different is that they like to touch penises or vaginas unlike the other ~90% of their gender. Homosexuality is not a character trait, or a fashion accessory, or a bullet point for your game.

That's fine to look for, I guess, but you have to remember that these are 100% realistic scenarios. People are vague about themselves sometimes, for many different reasons. And, well, Ryan North (creator of Dinosaur Comics) put it best when he said "i received several dozen emails about utahraptor either being a girl or being gay in yesterday's comic! he is gay, guys. only he doesn't talk about it all the time, on account of having interests outside of being gay?"

if you want gay porn just... welp, there's a whole internet out here mr. OP
I was thinking about this and even BL games don't outright say that they're gay. If they do it's cheap and unrealistic in some way. It just doesn't click. Dunno but pretty much what Craze said, yeah.

Oh man, yes yes yes and yes. OTL

Sorry to take the thread off topic, but holy banana fish I'm sick to death of gay characters only talking about how gay they are or finding out what it means to be gay and blah blah blah fuck no stopppp

The coming out story is indeed a great source of drama and character development. I'm queer, and trying to figure out exactly how I fit in a heterosexual world was hard! I still haven't totally figured it out, and dealing with all the confusion and feelings that come with being queer is... well, there's a lot to deal with. And, typically, it seems like this whole coming out thing or realizing that one is gay would happen at a younger age, so yeah I can see it making sense for younger characters to struggle with their sexuality, especially if the setting is a world similar to our own (in that any sexuality that isn't heterosexuality still isn't seen as "normal" and accepted by society).

But, man, like... I'd really love to see some queer characters that either aren't going through that, or those feelings aren't the focus. I like writing queer characters because, like I said, I'm queer, and I want to see more representation out there, and I don't like writing the after school special Glee style subplots. I feel like you can explore the feelings of confusion and isolation and whatever as part of larger subplots. Like yup there is a lesbian in my game, she is coming to terms with her sexuality, but it's less of a "oh god I'm gay how do I deal" and more of a "I'm a chick and I like chicks and that doesn't fly in a hyper patriarchal society". And as far as the dudes go, yeah, male homosexuality is accepted in society and is just A THING~ like being straight is A THING~. So, it's more about gender than it is sexuality, you know?

As far as saying "I HAVE A GAY CHARACTER~" goes-- I actually think that's not really a bad thing right now, because it is going against the norm! Yeah, I'm gonna point out that I have gay characters, but then I'm gonna write them like how I'd write any other character so that people see, hey, this character is gay but they're still just like everybody else (which seems to be a hard thing for some people to grasp?).

Although, I have seen people who declare a character's sexuality like it's more of a feature or the only piece of said character (like "GERTRUDE IS A LESBIAN~ AND SHE HAS A CRUSH ON THE HEROINE~ AND SHE GETS REALLY FLIRTY~"), or don't do anything to write outside of cliches (like man if I see one more either crazy or "bangs anything that moves" bisexual character I swear to god I am going to have an aneurysm), and that bugs me. Because, yeah, queer folks are people too. We also deal with heartache and parental abandonment issues and have to punch out imps and lose our jobs and have pets that die and get sick and are sometimes chosen by the lady of the lake to take Excalibur and save the world. Such things are not reserved only for the straight people of the world! (Really, the same could be said about how a lot of non-white and non-male characters are represented, too, but if I get into that, I'll be here all night. OTL)

I DUNNO I'M KIND OF RAMBLING HERE but tl;dr yup being gay is not a feature for your game just a thing some characters are. Also stop writing subplots that should be in Glee and focus more on character relationships and shit, a'ight?
