Yeah, so the previous one wasn't the last one...sue me.

Straightforward and to the point: who is among your Top 10 favorite authors? Fiction, Non-fiction, whatever.

..:: Top 10 List of Favorite Authors ::..

I tried to include only authors that have more than 1 book that I've read.

10. Ron Petrie
...and I failed on the first one. Ron is a local writer for the local paper, and he is a funny man. I enjoy reading his articles every day.

9. Scott Feschuk
A regular writer for Maclean's magazine. Read this: Just like Ritalin, but bigger and more metalic!

8. Robert Jordan
Fantasy writer. R.I.P.

7. Michael Shermer
..is a science writer, historian of science, founder of The Skeptics Society, and editor of its magazine Skeptic, which is largely devoted to investigating and debunking pseudoscientific and supernatural claim.

I've read his articles in Scientific American and his book The Science of Good & Evil. He is a very fair and articulate writer.

6. Will Ferguson
A Canadian humorist. Author of such books as How To Be A Canadian and Beauty Tips From Moose Jaw.

5. Terry Brooks
Fantasy writer of the Shannara series and Magic Kingdom For Sale! series. His Sword of Shannara book was the first real novel I read.

4. Richard Dawkins
..is a British ethologist, evolutionary biologist and popular science writer. He holds the Charles Simonyi Chair for the Public Understanding of Science at the University of Oxford.

I am currently reading The God Delusion. Great stuff!

3. Ken Follett
Author of my all-time favorite book: The Pillars of the Earth. This book should be required reading for everybody. I also like his spy-thrillers.

2. Colleen McCullough
A great historical fiction writer. She's covered Troy, Caesar, Australia and who knows what else. Excellent writer with an gift for incorporating as much historical accuracy as possible.

1. Dave Barry
Dave Barry is a funny human.

Craze
why would i heal when i could equip a morningstar

Uh. I honestly don't read as much as I should so I'll just take the authors off of books nearby that I've read:

BARONESS ORCZY (okay I love The Scarlet Pimpernel <3 )

SETH GODIN (marketing lol)

DOUGLAS ADAMS (duh)

JAMES CLAVELL (vnavnlksdnvienrvlksdnvnsfglhug)

BRIAN JACQUES (redwall yes)

THE AUTHOR OF PIPPI LONGSTOCKING (yes yes yes yes)

ZILPHA KEATLEY SNYDER (best children's book author ever)

CLIVE BARKER (has a lot of pets)

BILL WATTERSON (does he even count)

BYNG (molly moon's incredible book of hypnotism is incredible btw)
I've only read one of James Clavell's novels (Shogun) so I didn't feel as though I should put him in the list.

Shogun was awesome, though.

He needed to write anything else...?

I've only read Shogun by him too, btw-- and watched the entire nine-video-cassette miniseries!
Stephen fucKing wins hands down.

Also of mention are (with related novels):

J.D. Salinger - The Catcher in the Rye
Mark Haddon - The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night Time
John Wyndham - The Day of the Triffids (If you want to make an RM game of this with me PM ME NOW)
Andy McNab - This isn't literary excellence in any way at all but its gripping stuff. Bravo Two Zero was amazing - there are other accounts but none tell it like McNab.
Gerald Durrel - My Family and Other Animals
Spike Milligan - Adolf Hitler: My Part in his Downfall (Fucking hilarious)

When I was younger I used to be into books like the Redwall Series (Brian Jaques) and the usual wizardry guff Harry Potter. I rate Philip Pullman as a kid's writer as well but I don't think it has such a good feel-good factor that Harry Potter does. His Dark Materials has some excellent imagery though as in I can still remember photographically what I imagined when I read through the trilogy the first time.

Also, well done kenton for making the first top ten topic that interests me beyond the realms of conversational sarcasm.

Okay, I respect Salinger even though I don't like his work. But WHAJNUSDBVJSNDKJSNDCN STEPHEN KING

I live an hour away from him (I know we've discussed this on IGP) so I can say this.

STEPHEN KING RUINED MY LIFE.

See, The Princess Bride is my favorite book ever (the author sucks, though, and only Goldman's abridged version is readable). STEPHEN KING SCREWED OVER GOLDMAN AND STOLE BUTTERCUP'S BABY (THE SEQUEL) RAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGG

What? The Top 10 Books (fiction) and Top 10 books (non-fiction) were a miss?
Hmm...

1) Mark Twain (Tom Sawyer)
2) JD Salinger (Franny and Zooey, Catcher in the Rye)
3) JK Rowling (Harry Potter)
4) Lloyd Alexander (Prydain chronicles)
5) Yann Martel (Life of Pi)
6) Cormac McCarthy (The Road, No Country for Old Men)
7) W.O. Mitchell (Who Has Seen the Wind)
8) Mary Lawson (Crow Lake)
9) Ernst Hemingway (Old Man and The Sea, The Sun Also Rises)
10) Robert Pirseg (Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance)

I feel like I'm missing someone important... Oh well. That's a pretty good summary of the books and authors I've enjoyed most. I'm not entirely sure on the order though, as it depends on the mood, but I did the best I could. ^_^
