They're sure handing them out like candy these days. Does getting a high Famitsu score even mean anything anymore?
Oh give me a break you don't think an MGS game would probably get a perfect score?

Especially since review sites/magazines almost gave Metal Gear Solid 2 a perfect score when that game was absolute shit.

I didn't think it was absolute shit. The whole fact that it copied MGS1 (for reasons later stated in the game) was a bit... odd (or just a rush job, I dunno). But you can say that gameplay was still pretty good, warranting at least a decent score (7 or 8/10 perhaps?)

The countdown to the "brandonabley MGS4 has the best metacritic score ever" thread begins.
Not surprised in the least.

Well good for you but I hate it and their's no point trying to change my mind. Now I'm in quite the dilemma here, see it's my birthday on June 8th and since I only really want a game to hold me off for awhile and seeing as everyones been raving about this game for some time now with all this hype, I was wondering should I get this over any other Playstation 3 game, or just keep my money?

I agree. They did this with most of the Final Fantasy games. Most of them got a big 40/40.
Better be perfect, considering how much time and money went into it. Jeez.

Note that Famitsu has gone on record before by saying they rate games based on what they think their readers would rate them. They've also been paid off before.

Not that I am saying MGS4 won't be a great game (at least for the people who like MGS). But this 40/40 doesn't mean anything.

Um... I wasn't trying to.

You could probably rent it.
I like how the advertisement for MGS 4 is made out to be just like a movie trailer, down to the "In a world..." voice over. I haven't played much of the MGS saga, but from what I've seen, it's very appropriate.

See, this is a subtle implication that Metal Gear games are more like movies than video games! It is an observation that I must be the first person to have pointed out. Ha ha!

But I liked MGS2 :(...

But yeah.. the point really is, these overhyped games always get high scores, or else face the wrath of fanboys and game developers. For instance, although 1Up criticized MGS3's CQC controls as being too complex, nobody bothered to mention these things anywhere else... just sillyness. But then, to be fair, 1Up criticized MGS4 for being too front-loaded with new material and way too cinematic in the end, with too little gameplay for an actual game.

(I'm still going to borrow someone's PS3 and play this game though, dammit!)

Only one Final Fantasy game received a 40/40 from Famitsu, and that's FFXII. The average for most all the "big" games we get here in the States is 35-38/40. Some of the really popular games in the US got only 25/40. I remember a game like that was the topic in #rm2k one time, but I can't recall the actual game.

@Shadowtext: Ahahahano. I've voiced it many times irl that Kojima should have just made MSG4 a movie; it would've gotten released sooner.
