Is OoT even an RPG? I mean, there aren't any stats or EXP or leveling up or classes or any other quantized characteristics that I can improve in some way over the course of the game.

I mean, if OoT is an RPG, would Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time be an RPG?
I guess i would classify it as an rpg. It doesn't have to have stats or leveling up etc to be an rpg.

I would classify it as an Action Role-Playing-Game
I classify it as an Action Adventure. I feel that, to be an RPG, you need some sort of quantitative progression of attributes. (A health bar shaped like hearts doesn't count).
That's just my humble opinion. This doesn't affect your Top 10 list in any way, shape, or form. My word isn't law or anything.

The reaeson I put mosts of these games down for some reason I don't know of any of my favorite RPGs my mind has gone blank. Although I never played Chrono Trigger?

I'm probably a baby to all of you, I'm still young. I was a N64 guy, so i didn't own a SNES. Though I was given a NES from my friend.

The only Zelda I'd qualify as an RPG would be Zelda 2. Exp -> leveling up is involved.

I classify it as an Action Adventure. I feel that, to be an RPG, you need some sort of quantitative progression of attributes. (A health bar shaped like hearts doesn't count).

It can be seen as discrete values though: Each heart is made up of four quarter-hearts, making each heart worth 4HP. You start with 12HP, each time you beat a boss you get 4 more HP! (Plus there's heart peices->containers to get more HP)

Meanwhile games like Legend of Mana work with relative values. You have 100% HP, you get hit, you're at 95% HP. There is a real HP value that you can't see (you can see your HP in the menu, which you can't get to during battle and you get full HP when a battle ends, so its pretty useless).

The Point: People have their own definitions of the genre. Arguing it never really works and it really doesn't matter if a game falls under a genre or not.

Top 10 later.
It kinda matters, when you say "hey! Gimme your top 10 favorite of <genre>!"

The Genre kinda has to be defined.
Compiling this list is going to be hard. It's like picking favorite children.

Yeah, except so many genres are combined into a mess nowadays. Its hard to give a good and accurate definition considering. Best to play it by ear and get some oddballs like a Zelda game. As long as it isn't too rediculous its best not to argue it too much.

Anyways:

1) Final Fantasy Tactics
2) Final Fantasy 6
3) Valkyrie Profile
4) Wild ARMs 3
5) Chrono Trigger
6) Secret of Mana
7) Legend of Cao Cao
8) Wild ARMs 4
9) Breath of Fire 3
10) Earthbound
To answer this question of zelda...

What is an Adventure game? An Adventure game is any Action game that has multiple weapons/items that are found in various places of the game, and that allows you to return to any area of the game at any time. Again, this is an extension of an Action game. Hard-core examples include Landstalker, Popful Mail, and YES, Zelda.

Came from this nice massive descriptive page. Should now help us differentiate between game genres. Then again, that is just THAT guys opinion.

When Wild ARMs is an advenure/RPG hybrid. You can pick up tools that characters can use in dungeons to solve puzzles and the like (which is pretty cool since the usual RPG dungeon is more boring).

Or Lufia 2.

Defining genres is hard.
As much as I don't like that guy's font and the way he talks, he's almost dead on, except for adventure, where he's not quite right. Here's the short list.

Action - Involves reflexes.

Adventure - There is a world, and in certain places throughout the world there are items to collect. These items are special and enhance your character's abilities, allowing him to reach new areas. Point and click adventure games are the origin of this, where you'd walk around clicking on things to pick up and use. It's ALL ABOUT THE ITEMS AND COLLECTING THEM!

RPG - Everything else (Note that whether or not you play a role has nothing to do with whether or not a game is an RPG). You collect items, but unlike adventure games, none (or a very small number) of items are absolutely required to beat the game. Stats, blah, blah, blah, everyone here knows an RPG when they see one, the trick is just not to mislabel adventure games as RPGs.

=Hybrids=
Action/adventure - Zelda (Zelda is not an RPG), Metroid, and Castlevania. Your reflexes matter, but your character progression depends exclusively on the items you find. Generally exploration-heavy.

Action/RPG - Any RPG that involves reflexes. Soul Blazer -> Terranigma are great examples.

Adventure/RPG - I can think of no examples, but I think one of these would be really fun and want to make one. Also, Wild ARMs? I might have to look in that.

And just because a game has elements of a genre doesn't put it in that genre. Tales of X-ia is hardly an action-RPG, even though the battles are action-based.

ANYWAY, back on topic.

10) Fire Emblem 7
9) Quest 64 (And not because it was good or anything)
8) Tales of Symphonia
7) Golden Sun 1
6) Soul Blazer
5) Paper Mario TTYD
4) Earthbound
3) Super Mario RPG
2) The Way (...what? I wrote a walkthrough for it, so leave me alone)
1) Chrono Trigger

Also I just realized how few classic RPGs I've played. Go figure.

Dark Cloud would be considered an RPG right?
