THE 2013 "OFFICIAL" MISAO PREDICTIONS AND DISCUSSION THREAD

Posts

Pages: first 1234 next last

It's that time of the year again, and we're getting nearer to the Misao Awards. Whether you have played many or few games this year, feel free to discuss which games deserve to nab each award category, or explore the variety of games discussed. Don't forget to point out underrated gems, and explain their strengths/weaknesses. Provide exposure for games that would otherwise go under the radar. This is a free discussion; everyone's opinion is valued. Try not to self-promote or discuss your own games, and definitely don't hesitate to download and play some of the titles that catch your eye. Overall, have fun!

Note: Feel free to suggest new additions to the list.

The long awaited conclusion to the cult classic RPGmaker game; Demon Legacy.
A tale of two unlikely friends struggling to piece together their broken pasts.
Non-fiction horror game. It is inspired by a real life crime that happened in Brazil.
Me-Patra's self-indulgent mess of a first game, starring an entire cast of dogs!
The party will travel to the tomb, hidden deep underground, and discover the results of Tarneus' research.
An 7.5 hour long labour of love 2.5 years in the making.
A game about Max, a color blind high school student who's taking an experimental drug to cure his condition.
Survival horror where you need to gather food and supplies at day while making sure you have enough time to get back to your hideout before night comes.
You wake up in a dark room covered in bandages. Will you make it out safely?
The game is about groups of “special” students: The inquisitive, the mysterious, and the insane.
Join Elsa as she sets out to defeat all the monsters on the island and discover what is it that the monsters are planning.
A short game about overcoming the scars of the past and following the right path, even in the face of overwhelming challenges.
A unique take on the dungeon crawler and follow-up to 2009'sThe Reconstruction.
A story-driven title – solve a classic but tragic murder mystery. Interview suspects, present items, and scour the mansion for clues!
A community collaborative project made in Super Mario Bros. X. It's the 5th game in the Super RMN Bros. line.
Take the role of a cute little fairy in a sports bra and pink boxing gloves, named Tina, as she travels from outer space to fight the dark henchmen of the evil galactic demon, Lord Grimm, and save her fellow fairies!
Just when it seems Erdrich has been spared from this tragedy, several unfortunate events begin to plague the land. Traverse the rifts of time and save the world from evil’s vile clutches!
An RPG with strategic gameplay focused on customization and dungeons.
An amboeboid landscape threatens to engulf civilization and all its plastic bottles.
Many mysteries will be confronted but one question continues to remain: “Is there a way to bring her back?”
A small puzzle platformer developed with the Unity 3D Engine. It is a remake of an old Commodore64 game called "Acia" developed by Peter Kaul in 1989.
A life simulation game with an emphasis on dungeon exploration, completing quests, crafting new equipment and items, and befriending the people in town. The game takes inspiration from the Rune Factory and Atelier series.
Wandering Souls is a fan game based on Touhou Project. Since this game focuses way more on gameplay than story, you don't necessarily need to know anything about the Touhou universe to enjoy it.
The Logomancer is a JRPG without killing. Conflicts are resolved through argumentation, logical discourse and persuasive speech.

A highly anticipated demo set during the age of the Norse gods.
An intriguing RPG with political and religious mystery.
A Yume-Nikki-inspired horror exploration game.
A side-scrolling action-platformer that uses elements from various genres of games such as RPG and action-adventure games.
Who I think should win the Misaos:

Best Storytelling and Direction - Suzy and freedom.

Suzy pushes boundaries by making a non-fiction game while tactfully exploring the human condition. Although I haven't played Phantom Legacy yet and I've heard that's got a boss story.

Best Characters - Pom has to take it here.

I mean, even if you hate this game, you gotta agree that Pom (the dog herself) is one of the most memorable characters in an RPG Maker game ever. For better or for worse. Honorable mention to Suzy and freedom for fleshing out the characters with believable motivations.

Best Setting - Subject.

Being part of an experimental facility is badass. Also, maybe Pom. Doge heaven is a cool place to roam around.

Best Atmosphere - VorLorn., or Rust and Blood.

Both of these games crafted a relentlessly dark atmosphere that makes the player feel in a constant state of unease. Suzy and freedom was darkly atmospheric too.

Best Graphics & Artwork - Reincarnation.

Even if you felt like Reincarnation lacked in the gameplay department, you gotta admit that the sheer quality of its art was beautiful and professional. Homework Salesman and fey are both pretty as well.

Best Sound & Music - Blood Shard.

Jurassic_Mark composed an entire soundtrack for his game and he crafts the mood meticulously with sound. Bonus points to Enelysion though.

Most Technical Prowess - Has to be The Drop here, hands down.

I mean you're creating a roguelike in VX Ace, how much more technically boss can you get?

Best Level/Dungeon/Puzzle Design - Labyrinthine Dreams.

Really good puzzles here. Also fey. I suspect RMN World would factor in here too, but I haven't played it.

Best Gameplay Mechanics - Fey.

Integrated action mechanics into the game flawlessly. Vorlorn also deserves a mention for the same reason.

Best Interface Design - Reincarnation.

The menus are professional-grade. Every click is satisfying and leads you where you want to go. Even the battle interface is custom & slick.

Most Promising Demo - Blood Shard.

This category wasn't that crowded, since most of the highly anticipated demos actually became completed games this year. Blood Shard has a whole lot of potential. I would nominate Oneirophrenia though, but it doesn't have a download.

Best Non-RPG - Either Suzy and freedom or Rust and Blood here.

Or Labyrinthine Dreams or Vorlorn. I'm still not sure whether Fey qualifies as an RPG or not.

Game Of The Year - Fey or Suzy and freedom.

Heck, I'm even tempted to say Pom here. Who knows? Also Lab Dreams is a contender.
I've already cast some votes, but I haven't really played many eligible games this year. I should play some more. I guess it's ok if I say who I'm voting for?

So far...

Best Storytelling and Direction: The God of Crawling Eyes
Best Characters: Pom Gets Wi-Fi
Best Setting: The God of Crawling Eyes
Best Atmosphere: Rust and Blood
Best Graphics & Artwork: Rust and Blood
Best Sound & Music: Rust and Blood
Best Gameplay Mechanics: Dragons' Descendants

I started playing Fey, but haven't got too far. It's very likely that I'll change some of my votes later.

I'm rooting for Ghost Shards and/or Sorceress Quest for most promising demo. I might have confused StarFront - Factions as a possibility this year because it was a "bounty review" for Media Madness Month.
Now this is a list I can get behind – bravo! I really have no complains other than Vorlorn or Ankharia isn’t on here, but whatever.

Since you showed me yours, I’ll show you mine (er, Misao Picks, I mean):

Best Storytelling and Direction: Suzy And Freedom
Although I originally had Pom here I just couldn’t resist putting this game up instead. Basing the entire game’s plot on a real life murder mystery left me feeling rather intrigued – even after finishing the game. Besides, calunio only had a limited amount of time to simplify the story enough in order to release it in time for the contest. It was unique, different and suspenseful. And I liked it.

Best Characters: Pom Gets Wi-Fi
dam Shibe.

Best Setting: Reincarnation -Dawn of War-
I was originally going to go with Vorlorn but changed my mind in the last minute. Reincarnation ~ Dawn Of War ~ just set up everything perfectly and made me feel like I was there on the action. I enjoyed running around town snatching up hidden items and seeing all those bloody chibi corpses on the ground while learning a little thing or two about Norse mythology along the way.

Best Atmosphere: Vorlorn
I'm not sure if it was the lighting or the incredible music that added to the experience that did it, but the great atmosphere of being stuck inside a mysterious citadel in the middle of nowhere surrounded by black creatures that wanted to kill you and a peaceful garden in the middle is what did it for me.

Best Graphics & Artwork: Reincarnation -Dawn of War-
I really had a tough time deciding on this one but eventually ended up going with Reincarnation ~ Dawn Of War ~ again. With so many talented artists working on this game and all the pretty sprites, portraits and, well - pretty much everything - how could I not choose it.

Best Sound & Music: Vorlorn
While not the most original soundtrack in the world, I truly thought that this was the one game that used it right. Having certain sequences and cutscenes match the music from note to note adding to the experience is what I thought worked perfectly for a soundtrack. I still have memories of walking up to the grab the sword only for the music in the background to get more intense as you slowly get closer to it.

Most Technical Prowess: Ankharia
I really couldn't think of anything for a while for this category as nothing really "grabbed" me in this department. That is, until I saw Ankharia. Man, has Koaangel sure come a long way, hasn't he? I mean, I've never seen anything like this in Unity before and this is pretty impressive stuff. Okay, not the best game in the world but the technical aspect alone is sure pretty impressive.

Best Level/Dungeon/Puzzle Design: Super RMN World
Over 70+ levels of some of the greatest Super RMN Bros. stages I have ever played, almost every single level is rather fun and enjoyable to go through. Seriously, how can I not pick this!

Best Gameplay Mechanics: Super RMN World
It's Mario. 'Nuff said.

Best Interface Design: The Drop
Man, Deltree you sure make some pretty sweet menus. And this is no exception. Besides, I did have Reincarnation ~ Dawn Of War ~ originally here but decided to spread it around equally and give everybody some love. So, naturally, The Drop won out.

Most Promising Demo: Reincarnation ~ Dawn Of War ~
IF You Are Not The Hero never went commercial it would have won. But since it did go commercial...I guess I'll just go with the more obvious choice here.

Best Non-RPG: Super RMN World
Man, did I have such a great time with this one. Words just cannot describe how much fun this game was to play. Sure, I've played a lot of good non-RPG's this year, but none of them were as powerful and as entertaining as this game.

Game Of The Year: Super RMN World
I think this pretty much sums up my feelings towards this game:

Here's my list so far, a lot of it was done earlier though and I'm starting to reconsider Broken Bottles. The rest are pretty spot on though I think.

Best Characters: Pom Gets Wi-Fi
Best Setting: Gingiva
Best Graphics & Artwork Fantasia: Rise of a Legend
Most Technical Prowess: - fey -
Best Level/Dungeon/Puzzle Design Fantasia: Rise of a Legend
Best Gameplay Mechanics: Broken Bottles
Best Interface Design: The Drop
Most Promising Demo: The Wedding Demo
Best Non-RPG: The Drop
Game of the Year: Enelysion

Most Promising Demo - I'll go left-wing and say Aether Pulse.

Those scorpion battlers are lookin' fab, kentonbro.

is this even possible? I thought it needed a demo... thanks for the recognition though!

yer welcome, 'arry
Update: Added Dragons' Descendants, Gingiva, VorlorN, Ankharia, Fantasia: Rise of a Legend to the list.

@kentona Thanks for the lists. I didn't know that you couldn't nominate Aether Pulse for a misao. It makes sense now that I think of it. I think it goes to Homework Salesman then.

@Gourd_Clae The Wedding is not a demo anymore, it's a completed game now. Here it is.

It also looks like I must play VorlorN now. I can't believe a game as big as this went under my radar. It looks really good.
Seiromem
I would have more makerscore If I did things.
6375
I would make a comment about how "I want a Misao but that would require effort" but I feel that'd be irrelevant.
Instead I'll post about the irrelevance of my non-post.

I haven't played any of these games! Looks like I've got something to do tonight!
Then maybe I'll vote.
@TBG Yeah, I know, I just pasted the nominations I made earlier this year. Don't you worry your pretty little dancing bear head.
( I really need to become more active around here ). I haven't played a lot of game this year, but I'll probably end up nominating HS for several categories. Needs more exposure, that gem.
Shakin' my pom-poms for Blood Shard, if only because I've watched that one since it was a wee bab and had a tiny hand in it!
Also shakin' 'em for Enelysion and Homework Salesman, because I'm all about being biased as hell, ah-hahahahahaha. OTL

I haven't played most of these games! Maybe I should do that. I remember playing Fey a long while ago (when it was still just a demo!) and finding it lack lustre, so I feel like I owe that one another go through if it's getting Misao predictions and front page features. I'm excited to see how it's grown!

Best of luck to everyone. I'm really interested to see how the Misao's go down this year. :3
Best Graphics & Artwork for me goes to Gingiva, I love the style of that game (even though there are plenty of errors).
Possibly Suzy and Freedom for Best setting.
The rest is pretty open for me so far, I haven't really played alot of games this year. Maybe I'll play a couple in this thread.
-fey- is one of the most technically well-executed games I've seen come out of any rpg maker, but the way it uses all its rather excellent systems is a little disappointing to me -- it has a tendency to use them as a crutch, leading to all kinds of monotonous repetition and huge swaths of the game left completely aimless because, hey, we've got an ABS and a minimap system that tells you where to go, so it'll all be good, right?

it feels a lot like a tech demo. the systems are there, but the way they're implemented almost feels like an afterthought. (it suffers a bit from being made in rm2k, besides -- tile-based movement doesn't gel too nicely with a zelda-style fighting mechanic)
Happy Birthday was brilliant. It's original, I have yet to find another game with a twist like it. I love how you played the detective, and how you had to put the clues together yourself at the end yourself. It never once gave away who was the killer until the final two clues, either! Very well written. I don't mind when a game uses the RTP, as long as it's telling a good story. This one is telling an amazing story.

I also loved Pom Gets Wifi, I was one of them that nominated it for best characters, naturally. We all seem to agree on this, and a plus for very polish pixel art!

Divinity Fatum, I feel it also deserves an award for it's art and story line. It starts out slow, but it picks up after the first chapter. That might be what hurts it, though. It's incredibly deep, as it uses metaphors like 'masks' and 'monsters of society'(if you've played it you'd understand), and ''God can't walk with her people.'', just on and on. It's very deep about judgement about others, and sometimes the outcomes of it. It's also a one person team! It possibly has the best art work as well, imo.

Seven Mysteries could had actually used a little more work to be honest, I've played a lot of RPG horror games, and it does what they all do. Plus I looked more into it, it's based off of an old mystery anime episode where a teacher killed students and crap, then hid their bodies in the walls. The storyline was almost to a T.

...igggghh iirc that was my major beef with it back when it was a demo. why didn't i write any of this down AUGH OTL

I agree, Happy Birthday had a brilliant story, even if it was hampered by some frustrating game mechanics. And yes, the putting your clues together at the end was pretty fantastic. It actually meant you had to pay attention to the story in order to get it right, instead of the NPC putting together the story for you.

I also agree with your opinion on Seven Mysteries. I encourage you to check out Suzy and freedom if you have the time, its story is handled masterfully. Plus it is based on real life events, which makes it even creepier.

That game actually has quite a bit of exposure compared to other games. Not to downplay it, it is gorgeous, but I found a lot of the gameplay mechanics didn't mesh well together. That and I think it should make its extremely steep learning curve a little bit shallower. But that's speaking from someone who isn't that experienced with life simulation games (the only ones I've played are The Sims and Animal Crossing).

Very well written. I don't mind when a game uses the RTP, as long as it's telling a good story. This one is telling an amazing story.

I'll play it, and possibly write a review of it actually. I know a lot about sociopathy, real life murder, etc how to dig up that stuff. It's already getting great reviews 'though. I have very high hopes for it.
