REMEMBER WHEN IRC WAS THE BEES KNEES?

I do. When members of the community chatted about things in real time, about any subject, game making, games in general, movies, or whatever was going on. However when the community shifted and some people left (which happens, it's natural), the torch of IRC wasn't carried over to many people who are on the community now, and not very many people use it. The problem isn't inherent or anything, it's just that there's no expectation to use it, people figure nobody is going to be on it, and nobody goes. Back when IRC was bustling, it was mostly because it was a self sustaining thing, new people came into the community, heard (or thought) that IRC was poppin', and they logged on, and people talked.

It was pretty simple, so I'm not suggesting some radical thing, but it would be nice if there was a slight official nudge to start using IRC again alongside the rest of the stuff we have, as its a great tool and it would be a shame to see it languish. Just remind people that its here and that it's cool! I can certainly log on and join any chat that comes when I'm around!
Yeah...

I've been in the IRC chat a few times and am sad to see it's dead.
IRC was a staple for me in my formative years. Wish I had time to sit and chat like I used to. I idle in there almost always now, but won't really be able to get much free time to do stuff in there unless I'm done with work/homework and the wife isn't home :>

But IRC is great! People should go there and discuss more things. Post shit about your games. I always check out backlog stuff when I get the chance.
I have a gatdam idea.

What if we made weekly discussion events in IRC? Every week the mods (or whoever) would organize a chat based around a certain topic and it would go from there.
I like the idea!

Would need to consider how to moderate it exactly. Should it just be a free-for-all everyone discuss things? I mean... I honestly see nothing wrong with that.
IRC is still great. And I would love there to be more people when I'm on. (which is about 4pm - 9pm UTC)

And I would love there to be even more Game of Thrones related discussion. Because I can not get enough of Game of Thrones.

This is just an idea and I'm not sure it is even possible, but I thought I'd throw it in anyways. There is this bar at the bottom of the Community Portal that Shows the currently active members, right? Would it be possible to put a similar, small window on the Community Portal that just shows the number (not the names, just the amount) of people who are currently in the IRC channel? That way, we would immediately know if there's something going on there, and it would encourage people to actually visit the iRC more.

Exciting, but ultimately pointless.

I used to use IRC all day and night back in the day, but for a few years now I've sort of forgotten that there is ANYTHING outside of Skype.

I sort of do miss IRC now that I think back on all of the awesome times I had in #rpgmaker and the various Gaming World channels.
We can make it work, and not force it either, I really believe there are a lot of people that are willing to use IRC, they just don't think there are other people there, including myself. Stuff like discussion events or meetups between friends will encourage buzz, like anything else, its a flower you have to water sometimes.

problem is no one wants to (or can) consistently remember to water the flowers.

Yes, but eventually like most communities, it can become self sustaining with a little start up effort.

You are one of those people. It is your soapbox for decrying the Wii U and how FF6 and CT are bad games, remember?
I used to go on IRC a bit back in the day, mostly talking about nonsensical gibberish with the rest of the #shump members whenever I didn’t have much to do at the time, but I don’t go on there anymore because, like pretty much everything else that’s on the Internet, it just got a bit too distracting for me, especially when you’re in the middle of making a game or play testing something and all you can hear is *ping, ping, ping* and “Hey, S4D, say / do something funny, damn it.” So yeah...

But I do appreciate your efforts in attempting to restore the IRC chatroom back to its former glory. Not sure how successful it's gonna be, but good luck, nonetheless.
I'm on right now and checking out the scene. A lot of people are online at the moment of me typing this, so the potential is there!

I don't know - it sounds like that Spongebob episode with that really awkward party where flashcards were used to start conversations.

I'd say we need real-time developing competitions and stuff where we can discuss our progress - in real-time!!! - on IRC.

EDIT: Just want to add something: I've noticed the vast majority of us active users are cynics to a ridiculous degree, so we should probably do something about that to seem like more of a friendly place.

I remember when IRC was one of the only ways to chat with people online. I met my first gf on IRC. Everybody in the whole province(NS) was on the same channel, cause they could fit. IRC is the 2k3 of chat methods.

For me, chatting cuts into my game making time. Browsing the forums is starting to become a time waster even. After you've been around for years, you've already seen most of the useful discussions. It's not often that I learn something new these days. It's time I started applying all that knowledge.

So I guess it might be useful for the newcomers and those who can't get enough game chat. I'll be working on my games. Good luck, but don't aim too high heh
