LockeZ
I'd really like to get rid of LockeZ. His play style is way too unpredictable. He's always like this too. If he ran a country, he'd just kill and imprison people at random until crime stopped.

I don't have a good grasp on how easy or hard it is to learn RPG Maker VX Ace because when I was learning it, it was RPG Maker 95. We didn't even have variables, you couldn't customize anything, there were no custom graphics out there, and I only had 30 minutes of internet a day because my family had a dial-up modem and didn't want me hogging the phone line.

I do try to help when I see a help request topic I know the answer to! I don't always notice them, though. Fortunately it's super rare for a question to go unanswered in the help requests forum - someone almost always tries to help.

Man, 95 doesn't get enough respect. It has a bunch of stuff included in the default engine that nowdays is considered desirable in games (like, oh, mouse support and movable tile area and on start-up event (without needing a map) and custom game over event... among other things. It's got a lot of great ideas in that small program. Hell, even the graphics were pretty charming. ^.^

But, yeah, if you don't understand the question being posed it's best to either ask for clarification or leave it to someone who knows better, since false information is never good.

Oh man, and thinking back over how awesome and flexible eventing was back in the day compared to today and people demanding scripts for every little thing... like, dude, I can code a CMS with enough switches, variables and pictures. A script makes it easier but sometimes you just want to customise it without dealing with niggly little bits and pieces that can clash with other scripts.

Don't get me wrong, scripts are nice, but there's a lot that can be done with eventing that people don't do now because they have the easy plug'n'play option. :<

I feel like an old fuddy duddy sometimes.

"In my day we didn't have fancy shmancy 24-bit colours. We had 256, and we made them work! Transparency? Only with a picture! These newfangled scriptywhatsits and codedeedoodads are destroying all that's good in RM! Innovation! In my day we had the gumption to innovate! Oh, those were the days..."

If they're willing to learn and receive critique, we should encourage them to the fullest of our abilities. We need more unity's, more jomarcenter's, more newble's in our forums (to call out a few of the past and present newbies who have impressed me in different ways).

Pro tip - You want to feel a surge of pride? Adopt a newbie. Teach them the ways of RM and give them the help they need to grow better. Seeing them progress is such an inspiration to getting better yourself.

^///^ You have just made my day, Liberty ^____^

As a newbie to RMN who only joined near the very end of last year, I want to say that this community is wonderful for newbies, especially if you have the willingness to take advice and the drive to work hard to improve. I had never used VX Ace before, and whenever I have something I can't figure it out, be it something that's hard to do or something that's super-obvious and I forgot to check a checkbox in a menu (^^;;) this community has been so super helpful and kind!

I want to give a huge thanks to Liberty, kentona, Red Nova, LockeZ, Marrend, GreatRedSpirit, Deckiller, Crystalgate, Archeia_Nessiah and everyone else that's given me such great help and advice (if I've forgotten anyone, which is very possible, I apologize XD) for being wonderful, helpful, and enthusiastic people who were nice enough to give me a hand when I needed it ^____^

Back when Legacy Reborn was a game you could download, I had this odd notion I knew what I was doing. Then, YDS started doing Let's Tries. I dunno if I watched any of 'em, but it seemed like a neat idea. Having people play your game, and be able to see their problems/misgivings/compliments live? You can't get better feedback than that!

LP threads seemed to be popping up like crazy, and I happened upon a thread started by Liberty. I felt really confident about myself, and jumped in with Legacy Reborn. She tore the game apart, which wasn't, exactly, what I was expecting. I recall doing what felt like a frame-by-frame reaction-blog to Liberty's LT. Since Liberty tore the game apart, it basically turned into me going "Ugh. I just want to take this game down, and forget about it". Which I pretty much did. The gamepage stands as a monumental failure, but there is no game to play there.

Despite that harrowing experience, I'm still here, four years later, still going strong with the gam mak. Though, I'd be lying if this experience has no say in what makes me shy away from LTs/LPs.
Aw damn Marrend, now I feel all kinds of shitty. >.<; I'll grant you that when I started LT/Ping (especially LTs) I wasn't as good at doling out the good with the bad. It took me a while to learn how to point out more of the positives and I hope that I've learned how to give better feedback since then. (If I haven't after four years then what the hell have I been doing?!)

Tell ya what - gimme another shot. Pick a game you need/want an LT of and let me tear it up for ya - with more positive notes and a proper summary at the end (all those judge LPs taught me just as much about giving better feedback as they did informing the creators about their games).

I really feel quite guilty now. I'm sorry about my terribad feedback back then.

pain is weakness leaving the body

no one is a fucking maestro the moment they're born. honestly looking at that LT it's really not all that bad ive had more stabbing criticisms from people close to me. if you can just accept it then you'll probably be better than your supposed perfect self that you thought you were.

Mostly, I wanted to post that as an attempt to be inspirational. Like, "Here's the kind of newbie Liberty was talking about"?

I guess it came out a bit whiny for it's own good.

As said newbie, I always remember that the general rule on the Internet is RTFM and try to figure out answers myself. I'll admit to being harsh in a few places to people who asked before looking, which i hope to work on. It's good to know I have people who are willing to help me if I can't find the answer myself. But I've learned how important it is to observe first.

Well, all of this aside, I have always believed that the best teachers always make a student seek the answer him or herself before just giving it away. If someone is asking a question you know is covered in articles or tutorials, then by all means, guide your wayward soul in the direction of achievement. We learn by doing, but there reaches a point where we've done all we can and need an experienced hand to point the way. By the same token, I sort of feel like this is what forums are supposed be for: people ask those tough questions and those in the know educate the masses by being kind and generous enough to answer those questions.

I was able to master the basics of RM2000 when I was 12, when Youtube wasn't even a thing and Don Miguel's forum was still around, bless his soul. I don't think it's that difficult to get the hang of this stuff.

That forum was great. Eye-destroying, yes, but great. Some of the content is still there.
I already learned what I could reading tutorials and stuff. Yeah, learning to RTFM is something everyone will say to you on the Internet.

Even the early 2000's webpages were pretty neat back then. I remember always visiting the south park official site and it had a 90's feeling for a while back then. lol

I ain't hating. Just... honestly? That shade of red with some of those other colours is a bit too much to handle for too long. That said, damn, I miss geocities pages.
The tips always make me laugh. Like, they're serious submissions, but some are just so... I was gonna say "newbie" but that's a bit unfair. Inexperienced. They think they know everything but still know nothing.

Oh man, that made me nostalgic. I wonder what Don is doing these days.

If this is about Don's site, then yeah, they would be since everyone was a newbie to RM back then. All the things we know now were built off the knowledge and experience of those first explorers into the RM engines, thus they started by figuring out the little things and realising what could be done with them. It took a while and it was a great time to be a part of the community since there was a lot of experimentation and ideas being shared around.

One person would find out a neat way to create something and instantly share it - and it'd be new and fresh; everyone else would go and try it out then build off it to try and make something new. Nowdays a newbie showing the same thing would be responded to with eyerolls or explanations on bigger, better things that can be done, their discovery almost being dismissed. It's silly because we all went through those first steps and should encourage others who take them to really explore what they're doing and understand it instead of just patting them on the head condescendingly.

I like the community now, don't get me wrong, but it was a lot fresher and more experimentalist back then. I really miss it.

...maybe that idea about an eventing competition would be something to look into. We could partner newbies with old hands and see about getting some experimenting done. Or even have something like tiers - difficulty levels and the like. That'd be interesting.
