DUBBED AND SUBBED

This is not about Dubbed VS Subbed.
I get that there are pros and cons for both. I'm not here to debate that.

Here's the thing I've been trying to watch some anime on Netflix but the only option they give me is subbed. I don't read that fast plus I'm usually eating while I watch I need dubbed anime. Is there an option for this? I sure can't find it.
If Netflix wants to get more people into anime they need a dubbed option. I've watched anime in subtitles in the past but frankly I rather not. It's a huge pain in the ass.
Seriously if you know how to get the Netflix streaming stuff dubbed let me know. I've tried the language button on my remote but it does nothing.
This would have been a much more interesting topic if you were here to debate the pros and cons of dubbbing/subbing.
I've never seen an anime that was better off for being dubbed.
There should be an option for Audio/Languages before you play an episode.
If the anime hasn't been dubbed by a studio, you likely won't have that option.
Well, depends on the anime. And the site.
There are some sites specializing on dubbed anime. And other sites may use other mirrors. If there is no option available, then there usually is none.

I'm fine with reading along fast enough, with the exception being Gintama. Many many explanation boxes - I'll pause then for a second. I'd have the same problem with dubbed as I will miss a word or two every now and then, so not a major concern. (no, German ones are not an option. I'd rather pass on watching them at all.)

So I just stick to subbed and only rarely go for dubbed - sometimes, just sometimes they are better. Mainly for action or serious stuff (deep, deep voices. hurray).
Ghost in the Shell had splendid voice acting. While I liked both the Japanese and the English voice acting, I found dubbed a tad better. Same with Claymore.

But generally, especially concerning a lot of low-budget titles and any and all comedy, I prefer the Japanese voice acting. There are a couple of reasons for them to usually be better, but I also quite fancy the language.

Panty and Stocking with Garterbelt I swear this isn't porn

Watching it subbed is like watching South Park or Powerpuff Girls in another language. Just feels unnatural.

There are some that do a pretty good job of it, but they are rare. I didn't mind FMA dub - Funimation did a decent job there - but yeah, for the most part I'm a sub fan. There's just something about the Japanese voices - the emotion feels more real or, IDK, something.

That's because the Japanese voice actors have a solid understanding of the scripts they are working with. Communicating that same understanding to Westerners is difficult, not only because of vast complexities of Japanese language, but the fact that a lot of editing companies don't really have a large enough budget/time to get the good actors in the first place, so you have a multitude of English dubs that feature passionless, monotonous voice acting.

In addition, I don't think a lot of Japanese voice actors exaggerate their voices as much as Western voice actors do, especially for animation, so that could explain why the Japanese voices sound more "real" to you.

That they never got the original script was a great help too

Thanks I'll try to look for that next time I'm on Netflix.

Dubbed anime back in the day wasn't very good but these days there are good voice actors doing the dubs and I don't want to read and try to pay attention to the animation at the same time so if possible I always prefer dubs.
I like to read books not video.

Touche'. That's pretty much the only Japanese animated cartoon where I enjoy the dub and the original equally.

Hmm... I want to argue against this statement for some reason... Let me see...
Baccano: Mostly because it takes place in america in the first place, and well... Slayers? XD Although, that is a personal preference.

Pokemon? Hah.
Hearing Japanese is always a treat. It's a very melodic language and the voices can be really interesting and the emotions are very well represented. Sometimes I can even picture in my mind what the scene is about by closing my eyes and only hearing the voices.
However, subs are often poorly translated and expeditious. I can't pay full attention to the image and become lost in it when I have to constantly lower my eyes and read.

English dubs might have been bad in the 90s but they are a lot more convenient and nowadays the translations are great. The English lines are often radically different from the subs. They are better phrased and truer to the original meaning of the lines. The English voice actors of today are as competent as the Japanese.
For instance, Crispin Freeman as Alucard (Hellsing) and Laura Bailey as Oboro (Basilisk) do a wonderful job.

Sup, unknown reference.

Some dubs may be good, but are they really better off? Something is always lost. The spirit of the original script. The biggest difference is the lip syncing, right? The english dialogue is tailored to match the mouths. But they end up changing the sentence structure of the character, which subtly changes their personality. They often add words to parts where there was silence before. Overall it just changes it too much and I have personally never seen one done well.

But at some point I gave up on dubs so I could be missing out on some decent examples. I have no plans to ever check them out, so don't worry too much about my opinion here. I don't claim to be an expert :3

Baccano's English voiceacting was horrible, though .. I mean, Isaac and Miria fall so very short compared to the Japanese vas! When I listened to a clip I was utterly shocked when I see so many preferring the English ones.
Still, it is factually wrong, that much is true.
