ClosePlay Knytt Underground, because it's the best indie game on the market right now. It's absolutely amazing. Actually, play the freeware precursors Knytt and Knytt Stories too, they're only short and they're also great.
Don't play Skyward Sword, for the love of god. Unless you're a huge fan of completely wasting your time and being frustrated that is.
What else? Paper Mario and Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door are really good entry level RPGs, and just good RPGs in general. You could probably even play them with your kids, since they're so simplistic.
Banjo-Kazooie and Banjo-Tooie are required 3D platforming experience. They're the finest example of the genre on the N64 and they still hold up great with modern 3D platformers.

Titan Quest is so underrated. My advice though; make sure you have the immortal throne expansion installed.

Skyward Sword is just an extended tutorial that lasts for like 40 hours and is surrounded by an unimaginably shitty game and pretentious as fuck story. Literally any other Zelda game is guaranteed to be way better.
A while back me and my friend got together and tried to race it. We didn't even get to the third temple before we ragequit. If I had the book I wrote down all my angry quotes about the game in I'd post them.
