Apparently Nobuo Uematsu wants to work on a new 2D RPG with the team of Final Fantasy VI.

This might or might not happen (he seems serious enough to even pitch it to Square-Enix though), but what are your thoughts on this. Even though it would be a 2D RPG similar to Final Fantasy VI, how different do you think it would be considering it would be made 20 years later?

Would you want the team to make a sequel to the original game, or a new game entirely but with a similar vibe?
Me wanty. We need more games like FFVI.

Games where your diverse cast of snowflakes get no screentime, and you press Attack to win!

I don't know how I feel about this. At least there will will be tiles in peoples' games that I don't recognize.
Sounds good to me. It would probably be better if it wasn't a copy of the original, but something new, though.

Exciting, but ultimately pointless.

If it's the original team, I'm all for it.
I'll take that, thank you very much.

Even though Uematsu's more recent work hasn't been that remarkable. I mean, The Last Story and Final Fantasy 14 didn't have bad music (in fact, it was still pretty damn good), but it wasn't Final Fantasy 6-7-8.
It's nice that they realize 2D gaming has loads of potential. That being said, they'll be producing it under Square Enix and I don't have much faith in SE anymore.

Final Fantasy 14

Not Nobuo. This is what Nobuo's been up to recently.
I'm extremely supportive of the idea.
Let them do what they want to do, I'll probably enjoy it.
Let's avoid drawing comparisons, shall we. It's hurtful and that's why we never enjoy new games.
As a gamer? Holy shit am I for this.

As a developer? Maybe this would spark a relegitimization of 2d rpgs, which could be awesome, but then my direct competition would be big-name studios, which is fucking scary.
we probably can do better than big-name studios in this regard
or maybe they would actually contract us

The original, disastrously crappy version of FF14 was Uematsu. The newly updated and apparently less crappy A Realm Reborn was done by Masayoshi Soken.
LockeZ
I'd really like to get rid of LockeZ. His play style is way too unpredictable. He's always like this too. If he ran a country, he'd just kill and imprison people at random until crime stopped.

I used to be terrified of just the other people using RPG Maker... So glad I got out of this business before the second renaissance kicks in.
I'm stoked for this. I'm excited to see what evolution the team has thought up in 20 years.

This.

Yes, do make a game just like FFVI, only "better". Everybody wants more FFVI. Once is never enough. Just hope they don't tank and it ends up getting a 4/10; that'd be pretty bad.

Oh God, if they made a sequel, it'd have to be like if FFVI and Animal Crossing had a baby (make friends/plant trees/build houses), because there would be no storyline-significant reason for a continuation.

•Kefka's dead/evaporated
•The Empire is gone
•Espers are dead/minding their own business
•The world somehow got better (no more scorched earth) after Kefka was defeated
•Magic is gone

What I think they should do is make a 2D RPG in the vein of fantasy instead of trying to make it all gritty and dark like FFVI, because heaven knows the market now isn't over-saturated with games that are nothing but muddy-colored wastelands and aliens and guns and tech and...
Uematsu's gonna have to up his game now that Soken's out on the field!

I fucking want Final Fantasy to get gritty again. Gritty worlds are filled with inherent conflict. These super clean, super bright fantasias that they've been putting out for the past decade have sucked. The setting isn't the only issue, but the writer of 6, 7, and 9 had the presence of mind to build worlds that actually needed help instead of magical worlds that I could pretend I lived in. Fuck that. Give me conflict.
