Welcome to Mischief List Maker!

THE CONTEST ::..

This is a Playlist creation event. Make a good, creative play list of at least 4 games and post a link to that list in this topic. I will check them out, select the top 8 or 10 or so (in my opinion) and put them in a poll. We will then vote for the best one, and the winner will get a gifted copy of Mischief (worth $25) a cool art program, courtesy of RMN (if you already own it and you win, I wil gift you a $25 Steam game in lieu). I am looking for cohesiveness, creativity, a good collection of games, and a good description for the playlists. You can submit multiple play lists if you like. Deadline is Wednesday, March 25, 2015 @ noon Saskatchewan time (-6 UTC)

Playlists were introduced in late 2013. These are collections of games you can make on RMN. Kind of like play lists on Youtube, or Wish Lists on Amazon.

All gameprofiles have a link in their game-bar called Add to Play List. Clicking that will allow you to add that game to a play list or create a new one (with a description). This will allow you to make collection of games for any reasons, but maybe you like to have a group of games sorted into a category that you want to play later, or are playing now. All gameprofiles should* have a Playlists section in their navigation menu (next to Downloads), for example: http://rpgmaker.net/games/82/playlists/

This can be a helpful way of finding games similar to ones you like already, but only if playlists are heavily utilized! So help out RMN and make a new playlist today!

Here is an example of a play list I made:
http://rpgmaker.net/users/kentona/playlists/39932/
These games have gone viral on the greater world wide web-o-sphere

You can find your Play Lists by clicking on the Play List icon in the top tab of your profile, or clicking on your username in the forums (it's part of the dropdown). You can find other people's playlists by clicking their username's above their avatar and clicking View playlists ie - http://rpgmaker.net/users/kentona/playlists/

THE DISCUSSION ::..

What would make Playlists more useful to you?

-One suggestion I got was when you subscribed to a game, it'd be added to your Default playlist.
-When downloading a game, a list of suggestions of "similar" games (based in large part on playlists) be presented
-manually search for playlists that include a game / browse playlists from a centralize location

Neat! I could get behind this. Right now I just have a default playlist of "games I wanna play eventually" but maybe I could get more organized.

Hmm, I like this idea a lot. Finding games to try out keeps getting tougher as more people begin making games - which is a good problem to have, but it makes finding stuff you might like tricky. I don't know how this would work with playlists, though - I'm not sure people make their playlists with any sort of organization like that in mind. Still a feature like "related games" would be very useful...

Hehe, I really love the Mischief Maker artstyle.

Should we give our playlist a specific name in relation to this event, to distinguish them from those that already exist?

You have to post a link to it in this thread. That's how I'll distinguish it. Just use normal naming conventions.
I'm going to take a crack at this. I'm getting a Cintiq soon so winning another art program to fuck with would be pretty cool.

I made plenty of playlist but there are no games I can add to them. For example I can't find any games set in Minnesota for my list of games set in Minnesota.

I'd really like to get rid of LockeZ. His play style is way too unpredictable. He's always like this too. If he ran a country, he'd just kill and imprison people at random until crime stopped.

The only thing I can think of that would make playlists useful to me is if games had a limited stock and were sometimes unavailable when I went to download them.

You compare them to playlists on Youtube, but playlists on Youtube are a series of related content meant to be watched right in a row. Also, they're something you give to other people, and any time anyone watches one of the videos, the playlist is recommended to them. In this sense I guess they would make sense here for games that are part of a series? But that also means you should only be able to make playlists of your own games.

I would definitely say that any time you download a game you should be recommended the most popular playlist that it's a part of. Otherwise they are just literally unusable for what you claim is their main purpose. However they would still be almost unusable since ideally you'd want the playlist to show up when you FINISH a game, not when you download it. When the player downloads a game they have no idea whether they want more similar games or not.

Currently I don't even know how to manually search for playlists that include a game. But I know that at no point on a game page is there a way to see a game's playlists. I do not understand the intended use of them whatsoever, which probably means they are well on their way to becoming amazingly popular.

This may be a roundabout way, but you can go to the gamepage, and if the game's on any playlists, it'll have a Playlist link up with the Blogs, Reviews, Downloads etc links. I like seeing how many playlists have a certain game on them ^_^

The major inspiration for them were the playlists on GOG, where you can find such gems as 'games you can play with one hand and while holding a beer in the other'

These can be very useful!

We could probably have a sub-page on each gamepage that suggested similar games, although I don't know if we'd want to force each gamepage to show that or just make it an option of the creator.

kentona why did you never inform me of these games? This is EXACTLY what I need, an enabler!

Oh yeah, as an update, here's my list:

I need to add a lot more before the deadline, but for now these are the only games I can actually remember that fit the criteria.

I've been using the playlist function for a while now and it was a lot of help when the IGMC rolled around since I could just go through and add all the games onto the one list and then delete them as I played them. It made keeping track easy. The same is true of the recent Strawberry Jam, Liberty made a playlist of the games and I could access it easily to make sure I'd got them all. That's one of the things I really like about the function, the ability to make it either private or public and to share it with others. In fact I've been playing a few games off Liberty's 'quirky' list and enjoying them.

In regard to the options for improvement, only the second one really appeals to me. I'd much rather have control over it that have any game I downloaded added to my default list and for a game I like I generally check out which playlists it is already on via the tab on the gamepage, though being able to search for it would probably cut down a step in that process.

@kory_toombs Hey, those are some interesting lists, but I've just got a couple of corrections for you. Grave Spirit and Legacies of Dondoran won several Misaos in 2006, Quintessence won several in 2007, SkyE won one in 2008, and Vacant Sky swept the Misaos in 2010.

Thx, had it updated.

Sort of difficult because some games were in categories in multiple years.

@unity: OK, never mind about that part then. It's easy enough, it's just not there if the game isn't on any playlists.

@kentona: I actually feel like if the intended purpose of playlists is to have those kinds of thematic lists, you probably don't want people cluttering things up with their own stupid meaningless personal playlists. You should probably have an approval process for playlists, in fact. I found out one of my games is on several playlists, but almost all of them are just named "Playlist" or "My queue" and full of unrelated games with no explanation of why they're grouped. They are probably just one person's list of stuff they personally want to play. This is pretty much destroying the usefulness of the feature. Even if some of the playlists are legitimately interesting categories of games, people will ignore them if most of them are like this. It's not worth sifting through them.

What you really want are GOOD playlists. It is clearly more harmful to the system to add ten shitty playlists to RMN than to deny ten good ones. RMN only having a few playlists is fine, since really there aren't even that many good categories people could come up with, but having worthless playlists cluttering the site makes people ignore all of them, as they see the entire feature as bad. As a result I think this "contest" is doing nothing except sabotaging the playlist feature.

However, some people probably do enjoy the ability to create a queue of games they want to play, and removing that is a bad idea. So, I think an approval process for playlists to become publicly visible seems like what you'd want. Then if people don't submit their playlist for approval, it just stays as their own private thing.

I think this is kind of nonsense. You don't have to use them if you don't like them. It would be extra needless work for admins. However, It would be nice to have some selection of official or featured playlists. They are pretty much yet another thing which can be spotlighted on RMN's cover.
LockeZ

6003
Well if you're actively promoting a system that causes more and more people to dislike them the more get submitted, then more and more people aren't going to use them. If the admins want people to use them then there needs to be a distinction between 'useful list of games that follow a theme' and 'things I plan to play'.

Adding a new method of spotlighting the good ones in a new section somewhere on the site or on the front page is probably far more work than just hiding/showing them in the place they're already coded to be shown. They'd still have to get approved by the staff either way, so the approval process itself certainly isn't any more work - far less, in fact, since they only have to look at the few that get submitted instead of every single one that people make. And I have a hard time thinking more than one or two a month would get submitted once the initial wave of novelty passes.
