Basically, Steam is going to replace Greenlight with Direct, whereby devs can pay a fee ($100 to $5000) per game to get it onto Direct, and then let the "community" pick winners and losers.

Steam's library grew monumentally in 2016, and I am sure that Greenlight played a part in that. With Direct, it sounds like 2017 will blow up Steam's library. Or maybe it won't? Greenlight was already an experiment in community vetting, so perhaps Direct won't change anything.

In other news, get ready for RMN Direct, where I just set all games to auto-accept on RMN.

Yeah, I'm very curious if this is going to make the flood of shovelware better or worse.
I think as long as there is some fee in place (preferrably higher than $100), it won't be terribly different than what Greenlight is now. All it's really doing is eliminating the middle-man. Even though a lot of crap got through Greenlight, the $100 fee still made a difference and prevented Steam from diving into the realm of "Put your game up for nothing and get maybe one download a week" like itchio or Gamejolt.

At the very least, Steam is trying to maintain its image as the premiere PC distribution platform. And even though Greenlight shoveled a lot of crap into it, we tend to overlook the fact that it could be a hundred times crappier.

According to Valve, they want to build a system where the good stuff floats to the top naturally. It doesn't sound like that bad of an idea, but then again that's how youtube is suppose to work.





Interesting move on Steam's part. If it can be somewhat similar to how Google Play Store works, it could make publishing games a lot more straight forward. Personally, I kind of like the idea, but we can only wait and see if it would indeed 'flood' the market with crap, but the fee is there to address part of that issue.
this is good news.

a) Steam no longer has the final say. But most of the time they allow the vetting to go through anyhow.

b) If you read the article they have discovery algorithms in place to target players who *would be interested in your game.

c) it's still greenlight just with higher fees and no middle man.

*Hope fee isn't higher than say $500 and not even close to $1000+ since I can't afford it =-( hoping valve doesn't get greedy here and are only looking for higher margins.
Was just going to make a thread about this, but you beat me to it.

I don't really know what I think of this ATM. I'll have to return here later once I've given it some more thought.

Read another article on cnet, and it says NO USER Voting so its DIRECT. FEE is Recoupable too, so its going to be very HiGH. yikers but good in a way...

I'm not sure, but this may very well be the death of the smaller indie community. Either that, or we'll see the raise of a more indie-friendly portal.

Well, I promise you they just aren't making money. There's probably a huge gap of what's sold and the return of your fee with them getting a bigger percentage of sales.

This sounds like greed. Somewhat like SpeedyCash type deals where you get loans and then they just screw people out of money legally.

Most likely the second. Getting a game on to Steam has always either been through Green Light or through the blessings of an established distributor like Kadokawa. Steam has never permitted the smaller indie community an inlet. Green Light was actually quite good, although it's voting system was rather harsh. It made Steam ideal for the small time indie and separating the wheat from the chaff. Now, if we're looking at 5K fees, this will kill the small indie community on Steam, which could have a cascade effect on the rest of the Steam community.
I can't afford 5k either, but i doubt it be that much. More likely $300-$500 range. And im betting the recoupable fee is based on your sales so if you sell x amount you get x back % on top of the sale.

As for other portal theres itch.io and gamejolt but i wouldnt expect you to make sales on those large portals. but its a nice place to put your game except gamejolt which bad very bad. due to them keeping your ip rights.
I guess we'll see lot "Steam Direct Fee Kickstarters" pretty soon.

Also, I can't find any info on there still being community votes for Direct. Does anyone have a source for that?
