HOW TO GET YOUR CHARACTER TO THROW THINGS?

I've been trying to figure out how to get a character to throw things. Sorry if there is already a thread for this but all the other posts I've seen about this topic were about throwing objects while in battle, while i want them to just throw an object after picking it up then be able to pick it up again. Does anyone know how I could do this?
