They told me I was mad when I said I was going to create a spidertable. Who’s laughing now!!!

It is definitely possible to make a game that everyone agrees about.
It's not bad, it's just the worst open world action RPG released yet this month. It picked pretty much the worst possible time to launch. Compared to Horizon and Nier, it just feels... clunky and lifeless and boring.
It's the best Zelda game made. And those games are better than most.
Sailerius is full of shit.

I've played almost every Zelda game in existence. No, BOTW is not bad.
I'm enjoying it. I would say its one of the better games in the series. I haven't beaten it yet but I'll likely still consider Majora's Mask my favorite. Majora has a more interesting world I think.
That said BOTW is refining a number of things from previous Zeldas so I dig it.

LockeZ

I'd really like to get rid of LockeZ. His play style is way too unpredictable. He's always like this too. If he ran a country, he'd just kill and imprison people at random until crime stopped.

It's impossible for an open world game to be good. It's probably the third worst Zelda game that Nintendo has ever made, and maybe the second worst. Zelda 2 is definitely the worst; BotW vs. Zelda 1 is a toss-up.
However, the Zelda series is really, really good, so being the second worst Zelda game still puts it way ahead of most other games. It's not BAD, it's just really disappointing that they'd change the genre of an established 30-year series like Zelda, especially to open-world which is just the worst genre of games in existance.

Oh yeah I had to go back and edit "that Nintendo made" into my comment.
Its not like its gonna be a life-changing experience or anything. Its not the greatest game you'll ever play.
But it is very good. Being able to climb any surface on the overworld and go where you please with no pathing trails or constant pushes to go here or there is very refreshing for an open world game. If you haven't spoiled yourself too much on the game's content then yes, definitely give it a shot. This is an actually good open world game for once. I don't know if it has a ton of replay value though so maybe rent it if you can?
Nonsense!
The story sucks ass though. Even more than other Zeldas. So I'll grant you that.

Maybe there's a market for open world games. But if so, they must be appealing to some part of the human psyche that I lack. I don't want anything to do with them. They barely even qualify as games to me.
They'd bother me a hell of a lot less if they were just a genre I could ignore, like sports games or first person shooters. But lately all my favorite game series keep getting new games that are open world games, abandoning the genre of games that the rest of the series was. In the last few years this has happened to Arkham, Dragon Age, Final Fantasy, and now Legend of Zelda. I can't fucking stand it. I want to set all of these producers on fucking fire and murder their children in front of them while they burn.

Did you even play the previous Zelda game? Their formula was so stale and factory-like it was barely enjoyable.
I'll say that BOTW has been the only open world game I have actually enjoyed. Primarily because it gives you a lot of guidance and that Zelda polish without just ditching you in a game with bad mechanics (Skyrim). The game is what you always envisioned you were playing in previous Zeldas. Not that MacGuffin bullshit they have done for DECADES.

Going to second wip on this. I heavily play jrpgs and action rpgs and barely ever touch open world games. The newest open world games I tried (other than botw) were were skyrim and dragon age. I played skyrim/dragon age for probably around 20h max, and that's combining the two. With botw I've probably played about 60h so far, which is triple the amount of the other two combined.
That said, I've enjoyed botw in that it does feel like zelda, but it does have some flaws as well. My personal gripe with the game is that it only has 4 dungeons and you can probably complete a dungeon in about 5-10 minutes if you know what you are doing. I miss the lengthier dungeons as well as their complexity. The enemies also don't feel very diverse.
I'm not against them taking a new approach despite not being a fan of open world games since I've enjoyed this one. I just wish the game had some memorable dungeons, puzzles, and bosses. as I've gotten far more enjoyment out of the overworld itself than doing any story stuff (which is sad because I usually enjoy story stuff the most). That said, the shrines aren't bad for puzzles, but they are also really short.
I haven't said much on bosses until now but for me they aren't the greatest. Attack patterns are predictable, and so far the actual main bosses don't have a set weakness. You just knock them down via either melee attacks or arrow then hack n slash away. The overworld bosses (only counting enemies with a boss health bar for this) are also extremely easy. There are only three types that I've seen. The two giant sized land based enemies have a weakness that I found to be extremely obvious, and the one boss I might have had fun trying to find a weakness for I had an npc ruin it for me. An enemy that moves through the ground and reacts to vibrations. I didn't even need to meet the enemy to know his weakness after that. You used to have to think about how to beat zelda bosses, but I haven't had to in this game.
Last good zelda game I've played before this was twilight princess. I hate motion controls so I just pretend skyword sword doesn't exist. Not a fan of fi either. I tried to like skyword sword...really tried...but by time I reached the first temple I just couldn't go on. This is just my opinion though, and I have enjoyed the game despite the story bits feeling extremely underwhelming. Overall if you enjoy zelda, and if you can overlook some of the flaws, it is an enjoyable game overall.

I still don't understand why they felt necessary to make all weapons so fragile.
I liked what they did with Zelda's character though.

I like looking for all the YouTube videos that say BOTW is the first Zelda game that has voice acting. Those people are just straight up liars who deserve to be beaten.
But there's also this:

author=WIPAll the problems I had with Skyward Sword were the parts where they deviated from the formula. I didn't think the motion controls worked well or added anything meaningful, and I was irritated that the game had half as many tools and half as many dungeons as most other Zelda games. The flight was just as dumb as sailing was in Wind Waker, and the weird stealth sections in the spirit world were irritating because they took too long and you kept having to restart them. There were also extremely few puzzles or secrets outdoors; they were all inside the dungeons.
Did you even play the previous Zelda game? Their formula was so stale and factory-like it was barely enjoyable.
All I want out of a Zelda game is for them to actually stick to their formula. They have a serious problem with refusing to do so, and I don't understand why. Does somebody in the Nintendo staff think that Ocarina of Time doesn't have a winning formula? They need to stop trying to come up with new ideas. All they have to do is make more content with the same ideas.
Edit: Wait, I guess the actual previous Zelda game was Link Between Worlds? Link Between Worlds was a fucking masterpiece. I hope you meant to shit on Skyward Sword.
I haven't played it yet because I'm a busy poor person, but I've mostly been hearing positive things. It comes as no surprise that others hate it to death!
With my limited understanding of what I've heard about it and what I know about Zelda, it seems like this game was meant to get back to Zelda's roots with the whole open world, choose-your-adventure-do-what-you-want thing. I know there are hardcore fans who've been butthurt about the series since A Link to the Past, so maybe they finally have something to rejoice about?
I dunno. I get the appeal of open world stuff for others, but it doesn't usually suit me personally. I'm a structure guy. I like having clear goals and a narrative that supports them. I like having the ability to dick around on a whim, move forward and make progress, or both at once. I can see why some people feel stifled in certain Zelda games, but I don't think it has to be all one way or the other.
I'm talking out my ass because I don't actually know anything, but I hope this had some relevant substance anyway.

I am excited to play Breath of the Wild. Everything I've heard about it makes it sound like it's a good, fun game to play.
But my backlog is too big to pick it up right now. Betweeen plodding through BB, Berseria, Nier 2, and last decades ultimate masterpiece SA1 I really don't have time for another game until I get somewhere with what I've got. Also I'd have to find my WiiU in storage which I'm not too eager to do.

It's just a different animal than the item -> puzzle using item -> boss vulnerable to item -> next dungeon thing. I immensely enjoy a genius designed linear experience like that, just like I immensely enjoy BotW's departure from the norm, in which you can just dick around and consider yourself playing the game.
