OLD/LOST RPGMAKER GAMES - SEGNIN'S RARE/OBSCURE RM GAMES REQUEST TOPIC

Posts

I'll have to look into this a bit more to remember why - so don't quote me on this. But back when I was uploading the games to the masterlist, I ran into a lot of problems with zip files, where certain games like Vanit's FF7 tech demo would be detected as a virus and would refuse to upload, because it was a zip file that contained a molebox.exe - but if you uploaded it as a .rar, it was okay.

The same thing happened with all the old rpgmaker games we found from the Brazil Magazines like "bob's adventure" etc. These games were originally downloads tied to the Magazine TopsEspecial. So if you uploaded them as their original zip files, they'd immediately be taken down, due to copyright infringement - yes, copyright infringement for a magazine/company that no longer exists, for rpgmaker games they didn't actually make, like Badluck's Tarion Star: Call of the Blade. So the only way I was able to get these games uploaded was to unzip them and upload them as .rars (however, I may be wrong about this)

So yeah, sticking to .rars is mostly just the easiest way to either negate false DMCAs or false virus detections on popular upload sites like mediafire, until we can find proper hosting. So yeah, please don't switch to zips yet! like people will groan and complain about preferred file compression methods. But as a poor guy, who can't afford web hosting and went to a lot of trouble figuring out how to reupload a lot these old games after they were taking down, please stick to using .rars for now, just because it might be safer at this point.

However, I'm open to change. RMArchiv.tk converted a lot of rpgmaker games to zips and Isozone while it was up, swore by 7-zip. If you can find a way where we won't run into these issues in the future, I'm opening to switching to a different file type. But for now .rar was the easiest and safest way I could upload anomalies like, Vanit's FF7 demo as it was originally preserved, as well as a handful of other rpgmaker games onto mediafire, very quickly and without any issues.

Yeah I guess I'll hold off then, maybe make a simple guide on how to unrar and properly play these games. the RTP issue I might as well start to untangle though.

Crystals: Legend of the Sword stuff

So I made contact with RPG, but as expected he didn't have anything outside of the signature images you found. One image provides a bit of intrigue, however, as it names a game called "Crystals: Kingdom of the Knights Part 1: Of Demons and Devils". This is notable because the original thread listed all five games of the "trilogy," and none of them were "Kingdom of the Knights." Admittedly, since everything for Crystals was made up on the spot, not planned out, and intentionally foolish, finding a newly name sixth (and seventh) game in the "series" should be unremarkable. But as someone who is working to make sense of the nonsense, it feels like some historic find. Is it a new game? A renaming? Why two parts? And are the demons and devils related to the original antagonist? These are questions I must answer.

After reading through your conversation with dada it also occurred to me that sharing what I have preserved from the original thread may be worthwhile. As fair warning, don't be disappointed by the poor quality of this "source material." Today it is a bland read, but at the time it was a apt collection of tropes from the community, and as such was hilarious.

Crystals : Legend of the Sword
The first game in the trilogy of Crystals (other games in the trilogy are Tales of the Orb, Magic of the Kingdoms, Legacy of the Zodiac, and Lords of the Swords), it takes place on planet Gaea and the main theme is courage and sacrifice for the greater good of the world. I've started working on the game 3 years ago and I'm doing good progress so far.

Story
Once upon a time in a land faraway there was great evil that spread through the land and filled the world with hate and darkness beyond human capacity of endurance and for such darkness and evil was so great people had no hope and all was dark in the darkness of the night. The evil warlord villain named Xergvor has formed an army of evil that kills and burns anything that stands in its way.

Riyu Rovgrex, a mercenary living a happy life in his hometown of GreenWood was out hunting rabbits with his brother Alex and his best friend Van. Riyu was a young man with spiky hair and a nice sword that was given to him by his father who mysteriously disappeared 10 years ago, the sword was the legendary Excalibur that was once used in sealing the evil spirit of Xergvor before it escaped. As for Alex, he's a mysterious guy in black clothes and he never smiles, he doesn't talk much either and is known for killing people for no good reasons. Van on the other hand is big and stupid and everyone makes fun of him. Anyways, they were out hunting rabbits to make a cure for the village chief's wife who had an illness for a long time and they thought they'd do the usual early game errand of saving her etc. They manage to kill a few rabbits (fighting a giant one in the process) and obtain the rabbit cure. When they make it back to GreenWood, they find it burned to ashes with a flag bearing the sign of Xergvor placed on top of what used to be the city hall where Riyu's father trained him to use the sword a long time ago. Riyu and Van are shocked, they start screaming like Japanese school girls and then crying waterfalls of tears, but Van didn't show any emotion which is a sign that he's up to no good. Having no where to go the heroes decide that they must revenge and kill Xergvor no matter what the consequences are. On their way to the land of MoreDoor they encounter a cheerful healer girl Duna who joins them after learning of their cause, and together they set off in a journey where they visit many towns and do errands and such and also kill monsters to level up and sometimes go through a dungeon or use a boat and then they arrive at MoreDoor and go to Xergvor's castle of illusions where they finally are ready to face the evilness of Xergvor.

They had the upper hand at first, Xergvor turned out to be a mortal himself and they were going to win, but that's when Alex (Riyu's brother) switches sides and tells everyone how he always wanted to be evil after a mad scientist did some experiments on him when he was young and injected him with Xergvor cells and that's why he went mad and wants to become one with the planet. Van sacrifices his life protecting Riyu and Luna (the healer's name) and they barely escape. Saddened by the betrayal of his own brother, the death of his own friend, and the lack of ice cream in the land of MoreDoor, Riyu vows to revenge, and to do that he must become stronger and Luna tells him about the Old Sage of the North who has great wisdom and also is very wise. They travel there by the new airship they acquired from something and then on their way air pirates attack and kidnap both heroes but it turns out the captain of the pirates is non other than Riyu's long lost father and they have a happy reunion and the air pirates escort Riyu and Luna to the Old Sage of the North but Luna doesn't want to see him so Riyu meets the sage alone and the sage is actually an incarnation of the Ancient Dragon of the Seven Tails and Kingly Feathers who once ruled the world but that's just back-story stuff.

Anyways, the sage tells Riyu of the prophecy of the hero with Excalibur who'd save the world from evil and also tells Riyu that he must find his inner self by entering the Cave of Personal Problems and facing the ordeals and trails to know who he really is. Riyu, Luna, and Riyu's father enter to face a giant spider who tells them their past present and future then they fight it and lose but the sage comes to rescue using his ultra punch attack and then he reveals how he (the Old Sage of the North) is actually Luna's mother and they have a family reunion etc. but Riyu still hasn't found his true self but then his father tells him that the key to defeating evil is within Riyu because he's a descendant of a race of Saviors who always appear to save the day and that if Riyu believes in himself he could unleash the powers of time and space and transform to his true winged demon form that can defeat all evil.

Riyu, Luna, and Riyu's father go to MoreDoor to face Xergvor for the last time. When they're there, Alex (Riyu's brother who turned evil) confronts them and his father (Riyu's father) try to knock some sense into Alex but it doesn't work as Alex accuses his father of never caring for them and going to join some air pirates leaving them rot alone in GreenWood and everyone cries then they fight Alex and defeat him they cry more as Alex says he was sorry and that he was misguided by the dark power and he should've been better then he dies. Now more determined on ridding the world of evil the three heroes go to confront Xergvor but they find no one in his throne room. That's when the truth is told...

Riyu's father declares that he is in fact Xergvor, the lord of all evil. He tricked Riyu all along, but couldn't help kill him because he still had a good side. Xergvor then kills Luna by jumping high going down then stabbing her in the back as she was meditating to unleash the energy of the earth. It's now only Riyu and his former father, who took shape in Xergvor. Riyu asks his father to stop this nonsense, they don't have to fight! But it's too late, Xergvor is so set on destroying the world, and yet the good part of him wants Riyu to defeat Xergvor using Excalibur and his demon form. Riyu refuses and is almost killed by Xergvor, but then Xergvor mentions how he killed Riyu's pet kitten Nekoki by skinning her alive just for fun and that triggers Riyu's rage as his eyes turn red and he turns into a black shadow that spreads and consumes Xergvor and destroys the castle and overcomes all evil in the world but the shadow turns white because Riyu is the good guy that represents light and then Xergvor dies saying how proud he is of his son and everything else is memory.

People celebrate the victory of the savior hero Riyu, statues are built all over the globe to remember his great deeds, people sing songs and tell legends of his bravery, and peace is all over the land. What no one knew, however, is that Riyu is now all alone. He didn't care for fame, fortune, or anything... He killed his own father and brother, lost two good friends, and also his village and kitten. Riyu was so sad, so hopeless, and committed suicide. The end.

Characters

Riyu:
The main character, a brave young mercenary leading a peaceful life in GreenWood village, loves to help people and do good things. He also hides a great mystery and holds the legendary sword Excalibur.

Luna is a healer and cheerful young mage girl with a staff that was once the staff that defeated Or'kaha the evil spirit of doom and life. She likes good and hates evil, and is very cheerful.

Riyu's Father:
Kind, happy, proud of his son, strong, just like every father out there.

As for gaining access to the forums, I requested a password change, entered in my email address, and was told the reset request was sent. However, when I check my email nothing is there. So I'll have to keep trying to see if I can break back in. And as always, thanks for everyone's effort on unearthing this piece of history.

Yeah hedge1's program is pretty sick actually, forgot to mention that. I think esp just wanting to check the date modified really quickly is really handy.

I'm also starting to wondering if I should just un-RTPfy and zip every download I come across. One question, is there any reason we use RARs? I sent out a rar for my games in sites like itch and gamejolt, but a lot of people get miffed and prefer zips (I think even mac users dont like it either). It just seems to be a hassle and another tiny barrier to just downloading a game for those unfamiliar with RM. Even if it is a hassle for us to organize and re-upload it ourselves. Just wondering if its a task I might as well do.

Glad to see someone found the program useful! As always, help spread the word if you can. There isn't a dedicated forum or any front page space for utilities, so it's hard to make people aware of their existence.

As for .rar vs .zip, while I find zips friendlier, certain older RPG Maker games literally can't be zipped. So .rar isn't a bad standard. And if anyone has difficulty extracting .rar files, 7-zip is a free option for Windows that can do that.
The problems with ZIP files are that there is no standard how the filenames are supposed to be encoded.

The basic rule is: Never use the built-in zip program from Windows! I think they fixed it in Windows 10 but just never use it for packing any zips!!!

Just use WinRAR or 7zip for creating "zip" archives. They have the correct encoding (UTF-8/Unicode) and will extract on any system properly (if you don't use the Windows built-in ZIP tool).

And best is when you don't use any fancy algorithm when creating the zips, best is "Deflate", this will extract anywhere without issues (Deflate64 is already unsupported by the unzip command line tool).

For problematic ZIPs (and LZH, but this is more a Japanese thing, these are these "Game discs" created from the editor) you can use "unar" (unarchiver). This program can guess the encoding of the archive, the same way EasyRPG Player uses to support games of any region which are problematic in RPG_RT.
I am not sure if this game has already been posted or requested here because I can't remember the name of it, but I've been searching for the past few days and can't find it.

- It was an RPG Maker 2000 game, I believe.
- It had lots of humor.
- The Final Fantasy 1 black mage was a foul-mouthed shopkeeper.
- You eventually went to the "real world" and fought Fred Phelps.

Please, if anyone knows what this game is, please point me in the right direction! I've been wanting to play this game again recently!

I think this is frontiers extreme, This is what stood out to me as well but I'll have to double check. If anyone knows what this game is for sure, let us know.

I wanna say that sounds right. I remember the game having a "generic, cool RPG title".
I'm pretty sure it's frontier's extreme but just to clarify Mitsuhide, is this it?:

Let me know! and I'll reupload it so it doesn't need RTP.

EDIT: I went ahead and did it anyways: Frontiers Extreme by Frontiers
I'm gonna try and finally submit the tutorial about making rpgmaker games RTP-less, hopefully today or tomorrow. I apologize if it's taken so long, there's already a couple of tutorials on RMN on how to do it, But unlike previous tutorials, new methods sort of sprung up and I want to make the instructions very clear so everyone, even those not that familiar with rpgmaker will know how to do this themselves.

EDIT2: While I have the chance, I want to say, that recent write up for "Seeker of the Sun" on RMHistoria is GOLD! I had no idea a game with that type of Custom Battle System was on GamingGroundZero. Like, I've seen the titlescreen numerous times, but I never bothered to try it. Fantastic write up Darken.

Yup! This is it! I know just from the first few screens and the "Sucmo" intro. lol.

SO HAPPY I GET TO PLAY THIS AGAIN!

Hehe you are welcome, it's great to move some games from the graveyard!! :)

I found Legion Saga R with 170+ map one of my USB stick, it might be the "most wanted final demo version" though i am not sure of the differences... I upload it on my OneDrive for you to check if you like?
Yeah the LSR I have only has 75 maps, so that might be it.

Aaaah!! Thank you so much Govinda♥!! This has definitely more than 75 maps, as Tau said. It's 178, and it's playable with easyrpg.

This is so cool! We won't know for sure if this is it, but I'll scan through later today just to see if it ends where Tau mentioned in his post years ago. (also thank you for the Final Fallacy upload!)

Govinda, I have to ask, where did you find this? A lot of new rpgmakers I run into now, say they're using easyrpg on 3DS and android. You also mentioned Oniromancie, a french speaking rpgmaker community. Could you please tell us more about where you found this? it'll probably help us down the road when looking for other old rpgmaker games.

Again, thank you for your very kind contribution. This means a lot♥

I am glad to be helpful, and hope it is the final demo that was available for Legion Saga R... Playing it some seems to be the case! ;)

For Shaq Fu RPG, I have been curious of the game for a while and there were links in the YouTube videos of the author, though not working... I have tried them again out of a search this week and... They worked. :o

For Legion Saga R, I know to have tried it in the past years and keep a bunch of USB sticks along a few external drives. Looking again the missing games here I checked again my humble vault and found it in one of the USB keys.

EDIT : There is also the official Legion Saga page on itch.io

https://crowbarska.itch.io/legion-saga

But it seem I & II don't have RPG_RT and R is missing tons of RTP files...

I am French and have been trying to help the missing games at Oniromancie since a few weeks, I could help there with Yume Nikki French translation and Final Fallacy SE so far.

Either I find a direct link working, or I upload the game from my storage trying to fix missing files from other available archives, such as FaceSet ArchEnemy for Final Fallacy along with the latest EasyRPG Player for convenience.

Cheers, I'll look again what I can find from time to time; Rise from your grave!!

EDIT : Some fresh download links I could find (also updated my OneDrive with a few games)

The Legend of Zelda - The Fallen Sage

The Legend of Zelda - Final Apocalypse

Thank you again, for your generous contributions Govinda! I've been looking for TLOZ, Time's Menagerie, Final Apocalypse and The Fallen Saga for awhile. As I mentioned previously, part of what makes managing this thread so rewarding is meeting all the different people from different parts of the world who like rpgmaker games. Don't be a stranger, please come by again sometime! :)

It's always really cool, how, we all speak different languages, but we all love rpgmaker. But yeah, I'll look into the legion saga RTP issue you mentioned as as well.

For everyone else, this kind of slipped under the radar. but I wanted to mention, I finally got the "no RTP" 2019 tutorial finished:
https://rpgmaker.net/tutorials/2610/

Maybe I'll resubmit it as an article? But yeah, this took awhile to put together. Try it out. if it's too hard to understand,
or if there's steps missing, let me know. But hopefully with this simple step-by-step tutorial this will get others to turn old games
in RTP-less games as well.

When I have a chance, I'll add this tutorial to the main thread as well as the list generator hedge1 recently compiled. But just to summarize the steps:

1.Edit RPG_RT.ini with "FullPackageFlag=1" to run without RTP
-Go into your game project folder
-Find a file called “RPG_RT.ini”,
-Add “FullPackageFlag=1”, Save.

2. Download Harmony.dll and place it in your project folder with the RPG_RT.exe (not needed for steam RM2000/RM2003)
Harmony.dll for RM2000
Harmony.dll for RM2003

3. Download RMtools

4.Download the corresponding rtp:
Don Miguel's RM2000 RTP
RPGAdvocate's RM2003 RTP
----------------------------------------
RMWEB/Steam RM2000 RTP
RMWEB/Steam RM2003 RTP

5. Use RMtools to scan/import missing RTP files for rpgmaker2000/2003
6. Test your rpgmaker game on a computer that does not have rpgmaker installed.

7. If no errors are found, you're done!
Hey guys,

Just reuploading Shadows of Evil 4.0 as requested by IllusioMan.

If anyone else still needs a game reuploaded I'll see if I can help. Just send me a message to my mailbox and I'll answer as soon as I can.

I`m also still looking for the latest QHeretic`s Exile demo, mine has 80 maps. If someone else has a more recent version please do share it.
Hmm I might as well share my Google Drive folder publicly for now, content list so far :

* Dragon Quest + (Demo v1.0.1)
* Fall of Nosgoth (Demo v0.20 English)
* Final Fallacy - Special Edition (not rare but I could gather seemingly most missing files)
* Legion Saga R (Final Demo...? It doesn't stop after the prison event and have very few missing files)
* Yume Nikki (French translation with a few extra guides)

A text file with various sources for RMN oldies.

Thanks again everyone!
I added Exile to the request list♥.
I also made a back of up of the Pack de Jeux Rpg Maker 2000-03 4.03 GB - Jul 27, 2013
included in the source list (thank you! that's the only list I'm not familiar with/don't have a backup of)

Quick update. MonkeyPro.net, an alternative site we used for mirror downloads for a lot games from 2007 appears to be down now.

This is the list of games they had available:
http://web.archive.org/web/20181008033617/http://www.monkeypro.net/games.php

Most of these games already appear to be on RMN in some capacity, However there are probably a few that I missed out on.
And the site stopped working correctly awhile ago around 2018. I'll try to figure out how to sort these out at some point.
