L is for Location

What is this?
This is the start of a series of Creative Writing exercises. There will be seven (7) topics/parts to the series, this being the second, and all are aimed at creation.

This second episode will focus on location creation.

What are we creating?
This time, as the topic header states, we'll be creating locations. Each person who joined previously will be tasked with creating a location. Just one, mind you. You'll do this like so:

- Use the first and last letter of your first and last name, respectively, in the name of your location. It can be anywhere in the name of the location. For example: My first name starts with an R and my last name ends in T, so I could have had something like "Origama Tunnel System" or "World of Mort" or even "Taverndale". As long as the two letters are somewhere in the name.
- Give a description of said location between 100 to 500 words.
- Post them in this thread.
- Profit?
- I'll add my example in the location section.
- This Sunday will be the deadline. That is August 20th.
(That said, if you come in to the series late, as long as you add to the other topics, you may join in still until the end.)

Locations can range from a single room to a whole world. You can be as creative or uncreative as you like, making something of complete fiction or somewhere you've been/know very well.

I am asking for a longer written exercise than the last, but bear in mind that this will help you at the end of the series.

Once your location is done, it will be added to the topic. This will be referenced at a later date.

The Gandrell River
A long river that spans the length of the continent, it is home to many different types of wildlife and is one of the largest rivers in the world. Bordered by dense forests in the north and vast plains in the south, the river was named for the famed explorer who first mapped it from end to end. On the banks of the eastern shore, near the middle of the river sits the floating city of Gandre, a commercial metropolis built on and around the river trade caravans who bring many goods to trade that can be found along the river itself. The river opens out to the Askan ocean. A port at the mouth of the river allows traders to shore their ocean-faring ships in exchange for hiring barges in order to cut across the continent and safely delivering their goods for sale. The lifeblood of the countries that rely on it for trade, it lives up to its moniker of "The Living Stream".

The Castle of the Requiem of Oblivion and Peace

A peaceful yet somber tune seems to carry wherever one goes in this castle. It’s flat white walls dance with the faces of the long since past, some happy and smiling while others scream in pain.
Many people enter the castle seeking to bring back their lost loved ones, few people have ever exited the castle after entering, some return with enough of their mind intact to tell unreliable stories of having found their loved ones in the walls before being taken back to the entrance by a large mysterious figure that seemed to be dressed in something that was simultaneously black and white. Occasionally exploration missions are mounted into the Castle but and rarely they return, but were too terrified to speak of what was inside.

Elestrium
Stories are told of an ancient place with wonders and marvels far beyond our imagining; where men could fly and perform miraculous feats, but none can say where it may be, whether it sank in the sea by some cataclysm, or whether it is buried deep in some as-yet undiscovered jungle, waiting for some intrepid explorer or wayward traveler to find it. Those who tell of it say it is ruled by an immortal queen.

Gekrall Shopping Center

Of old, Gekrall was a place where people just hung out, and business was prosperous. Over time, however, businesses found better/cheaper places to do business in, and the social aspect dwindled as more businesses left. Now, it is a hollow shell of it's former self, barely able to make a profit.

Castle Jory
More often than not, travellers for whom the sight of this castle is novel will remark on the stillness of its surrounding trees; how the sounds of birds seems to have been sucked out of the air, and how very blue-black the shadows cast from the crumbling grey walls are against the unmoving water of its moat. The castle is a ruin, with whole beds left mouldy and rotting. The moat is curiously warm and green-brown, like a hazel iris. Those travellers are unlikely to ever want to return.

Jaguar's Tomb
Deep in the jungles, beneath the lost Swahili city on an island off the coast of Tanzani, lies a sacred temple. Bathed in fading rays of sunlight, the subterranean monument is slowly crumbling. within hold the riches of the Silk Road. Wonders horded from the trade market to secretly bring the island city to international triumph. However, a plague struck down the citizens, and nature devoured the mysterious tomb. Laden with a myriad of traps, mazes, and a so-called curse, have turned back many an ambitious treasure hunter.

Just letting you all know that you may do more of these if you so wish. The more randomisation chance we have in the 7th topic, the more interesting it will be. ^.^)b
Dunlase
On the island of Kylmathomafelyn, often truncated to Kylmatho by foreigners, in the central region of Tatoon, there sits on dark basalt cliffs high above the Kelmes coast the large city of Dunlase. Over two centuries of blood and toil went into making the town what it is today. Thrice is has been plundered unto ruin and thrice it has been rebuilt by the Kingdom of Cormlagen. As a result of its reconstruction it offers an almost side-by-side comparison of art and architecture of a century of intra and inter-cultural growth; from the thick stone walls and thatched roofs of the style during the reign of King Artturi to modern wood and plaster walls with triangular roofs of 13th C. ND.

Upon entry into Dunlase proper from the east a guest is greeted by boarding houses, taverns, eateries, provisioners, and stables. The southern district is the residence of laborers, granaries, farming and shepherd plots, and other agricultural industry. The western district contains blacksmithing shops, a small forgeworks owned by the Cullin family, assorted sundries factories, several bladesmiths and firearms makers, and a large glassworks. The northern district borders the cliffs and is the seat of bureaucracy of the town and indeed the entire island. The northern district is also home to fine houses, several manors, banking opportunities, and the famous Músaeim Rathúla.

Dunlase possesses access to fine glassworks, both the native factories on the island of Kylmatho and through trade with the other islands of the Tatoon region. Most Dunlase houses have clear, fine glass only seen on fine houses in the mainland. Several glass statues made by Duin the Elder, who practiced his craft at the Tuam Glassworks, are housed at the local Músaeim Rathúla.

The main streets are paved with basalt cobblestone and there are lampposts and signwork on every corner. Main street extends the length of the town through to Castle Dunlase in the west. A well-worn road continues east and then north down an easement in the cliff to the busy fishing village of Halweath.

Piracy is deterred with swift proficiency by guardhouses on each of the main streets and watch towers along the walls. In addition there is a strong tradition of swordsmanship among the populace and more than a few scallywags have met their fate to a common clerk’s smallsword. That is, if known pirates even manage to get to the shore. Kylmathomafelyn is protected by a mighty fleet under Admiral Au’Shanesi and measures a combined weight of over 50,000 tons.

(Kylmathomafelyn is pronounced roughly keel matho ma fae lynn. Cookies to Alt for reminding me to put a pronounciation guide.)
The Yellow Javelin
With a name derived from the legend of a squire said to have speared the wing of a rampaging griffon after it killed their knight, this popular inn was built on a busy road frequented by knights and squires, as well nobles and merchants. Its owner is a toadying and thoroughly patriotic man, always eager to impress new lodgers, and gratify recurring ones.

The inn features a large tavern with stone floors and thick brown carpets. Drapes embroidered with gold thread cloak each window. Wooden bowls of pears and different kinds of nuts sit on every table. Cheeses produced at the nearby monastery rolled in herbs and candied fruit rinds are served as a matter of course to nobility, just as they are automatically given the finest rooms; the servants and paying lower classes are confined to small, bare rooms by the stables.
